    Season 38 Entry Draft
Pick Order Based on Current Standings

    1st Overall Calgary - D - Vojczek Svoboda
The Calgary Wranglers are fortunate enough to know who their future netminder is.  Martin Brookside has all of the typical skills and potential that you look to carry a team.  The Wranglers also have a potential forward and defensive prospect in Travis Boychuk and Jack Ryan.  However after those three prospects the cupboards are completely bare they can go any position here and get great gains.

With Ryan potentially needing yet another season in the minors and no guarantee he ever does make the VHL I think Calgary goes with Vojczek Svoboda first overall.  He is currently the best prospect in the draft.  Matching him up with the promising goalie in Brookside will lay the backend foundation of this team.  Svoboda's player agent "Slobo" also has many ties to Calgary making this a great fit.

    2nd Overall Helsinki - W - Ashton Galbraith
The Helsinki Titans are in a bit better shape than the Calgary Wranglers.  The teams do have similarities though.  Both appear to have their franchise goalie (Kimmo Salo for Helsinki) and both have a few pieces already though Helsinki is a tad further along.  New GM "STZ" has inherited three long defensive prospects in Kyrie Knight, Tyler Owens, and Jake Wylde.

Expect Helsinki to take Ashton Galbraith here second overall because he comes with less baggage.  Bruno Wolf could become the clear #2 by draft day though and be hard to pass up.  Galbraith is a typical balanced forward who can play both ends of the ice.  His current weakness sits with his lack of physicality but in the VHL that can often be hidden by pure talent elsewhere.

    3rd Overall Cologne - F - Bruno Wolf
The Cologne Express have already have a near infinite supply of prospects in the minor and VHL level.  They will add to that with a nearly infinite number of picks over the next two drafts making their team an unstopping freight train of players.  This allows Cologne to always take the best player available regardless of positional need since they likely wont have any specific needs.

With the second pick currently being a coin flip between Ashton Galbraith and Bruno Wolf.  Cologne will be happy to take whoever is sitting here when they are up to draft.  Like Galbraith, Wolf is a balanced forward with the exception of the added physicality.  Wolf currently isn't quite as gifted all around but provides a more physical element to his game.

4th Overall Helsinki (via Seattle) - D - Don Draper
Come draft day Don Draper could go as high as second with the recent burst of effort we have seen from this prospect.  If Helsinki didn't already have so many defensive prospects he might be the clear #2 overall pick.  We can't say enough great things about him but Draper represents the future of the VHL.

Ideally for Helsinki if they feel confident in their current defensive core they could run into a scenario where Draper goes to Cologne third.  That would allow the team to draft both forwards Wolf and Galbraith at #2/#4.  This will be an interesting draft day scenario to follow.

5th Overall Helsinki (via New York) - W - Chris Raymond
I don't think Chris will be the best player available at the fifth pick but I don't think Helsinki will want another D-man at this point.  If they get the two forwards earlier with Draper going to Cologne then Helsinki will take Dimothenis Vlasis here.  However Helsinki won't want to take both Draper and Vlasis.

Raymond has a history in the VHL with player agent "Kachur" but not always the best long term history.  The VHL welfare system should make a player like Chris Raymond a good long term prospect to balance out the first line or help lead the second.

6th Overall Cologne (via Vasteras) - D - Dimothenis Vlasis
7th Overall Cologne (via Toronto) - G - Brock Waldron
8th Overall Cologne (via Riga) - F - Leo Tesla
As the standings sit now Cologne will have three first round picks in a row at the middle of the round.  I expect Vlasis to be an overlooked prospect who goes sixth overall but could go higher.  I just don't see the need for Helsinki.  Vlasis is a player to really look out for he has gone under the radar so far.

Cologne will be able to use one of these picks on a potential franchise goalie in Brock Waldron.  That gives the team some insurance if they do decide to go a different route down the road.  Leo Tesla is from the Roberto Martucci Organization which started out real well.  Roberto blasted into the league before stepping down hopefully Tesla can have the same early career impact but last longer.

    9th Overall Meute - F - Steve Tremblay
Tremblay is a relatively newer addition to the draft and has shot up on the board as people start to learn more about him.  He comes from a well known former VHLer Guillaume Latendresse who is very famous for his early VHL success (S1-S3 area).  He is a great example of another player who can shine under the VHL welfare system.  If the flame of success has been rekindled into this player he could go mid first round and should he fall later still have a great VHL career.

10th Overall Cologne (via Davos) - F - Seth Rollins
Near the end of the first we see prospects that come from no where over the final weeks to crack the first round.  Currently Jblaze aka Seth Rollins fits the bill as someone who could become a VHLer someday and has shown the activity recently to warrant a late first.  He is a raw prospect with questionable off the ice antics but Cologne will have a very active Locker-room that could pull a borderline player into a VHLer that would have fizzled on another team.

    Quick Hits
    2 New Draftees Added
    12 Players Updated TPE
    31 Total Draftees

Today we are going to look at three new players/members first generation players poised to break into the VHL elite or become an asterisk in our long history.

    D – Don Draper – Draper
Draper joined the league in early March and has already passed the 60 TPE barrier (over 80 in the next update).  To be successful in the VHL you must at its core create a player and earn TPE.  That is the simplest form of actually being part of the VHL make a player and then try to make him better.  To really succeed in the VHL and take advantage of all the opportunities available you must become part of the larger community that is VHL.

Draper is taking every opportunity to succeed in the VHL which includes fantasy zone, FREE TPE Announcement, VHLM Practice Facility, and so on.  Much more than just getting the TPE Draper is active in the other parts of the league Walking Dead Thread,  Happy/Mad Thread, and Video Game Thread are all examples of where he has posted.  The final step to becoming a true VHLer is getting a job yet another thing Draper is trying to do.  He is definitely on his way to becoming not only a great player but a great member.

Member Comparison – STZ/Green hit the league on all cylinders and hasn’t turned back since.

    F - Percy Miller – Coach D
Coach D joined at the end of February he is a great example of a new member.  It is that new car smell type of thing he has tons of energy and radiates enthusiasm.  Sometimes that can be misplaced and the drive to get started caused a minor controversy over a misunderstanding.   Basically a new member joining during a down time and unable to get all the answers immediately to all the questions a new member has.

He has nearly 100 posts already and can be found in numerous off-topic threads and attempting to claim all the free/easy TPE he can.  It looks like he could be one of the new age welfare players who doesn’t always do a graphic or media spot.  However if he continues to grow as part of the community and the community embraces him we might have a new member.

Member Comparison  - EaglesFan he is potentially a fence active member that just needs to be guided.

    F – Kristoffer Ruud – ByrdeMan
Joining at the beginning of March ByrdeMan initially looked like a mid-first round draft prospect.  He did VHLM Practice, a media spot, and even his Rookie Profile something that many first gens push back till they are more into the league.  The problem is he only has 13 forum posts and hasn’t logged in for two weeks.  This is the opposite effect of what we saw with Coach D above.  A new member who is full steam ahead then suddenly disappears.

Having shown potential effort and ability as a VHL member this is someone we should try to get back.  If anyone knows him from somewhere we should be attempting to keep him as part of our community and see if we can’t help him in some way.  Why start out so strong then completely disappear?

Member Comparison – Not quite accurate but Al Wilson blasted out of the gates to a first overall selection only to completely disappear.

Stay tuned next week as we start to dig deeper into the draft.  We'll be well over 1/2 through the season maybe our 1st mock draft?

Boys, it's bad enough we lost. It's even worse that it was to Cologne. But 5-0? That ain't cool guys. That must never happen again.

We play them again next game. This time, we're going to show those Krauts how to REALLY play hockey. I want ten goals. Let's beat their asses so badly that Chekov hits the showers early, then make COL G regret ever being born. We will make the kaiser weep!

Now boys, let's go kick some German ass! Onwards Davos!

Also tell your friends to stop being pussies, Wednesdays and Thursdays were the new weekends for me in the last couple months of 2013.  This year I've been drinking too much every actual weekend to have any midweekends.

In general I have a new appreciation for midweek birthdays, especially if you have friends who don't have serious responsibilities the next day.  They start out innocent enough, maybe a couple drinks after class or whatever.  But after a couple drinks you just throw out an innocent suggestion of doing something fun.  Like playing Fuck the Dealer or 7-11 Doubles.  Then BAM!  Everyone's shitfaced and calls a cab to bring them to a pub downtown, and as soon as you get in the cab everyone just starts speaking in an Australian accent for the remainder of the night, for no particular reason.  It was just something somehow everyone silently agreed upon after the first person had said something like an Aussie.

Yeah, midweek drinking is the tits...

    House Calls From the Captain

DAVOS - To some, being the captain of the team means little. Just another thing to get stitched onto your jerseys. Something to make you stand out. Getting your name on the ballot for the Grimm Jonsson Trophy. However, for Thomas Landry, the captain of the defending Continental Cup champion HC Davos Dynamo, wearing the C is much more than that. Being a captain means being a leader off the ice as well as on the ice, which is something Landry has taken to heart.

"I've never seen anything like it," said teammate Jarkko Olsen. "Tom will just find you somehow when you're at your absolute lowest and by the time he's on his way, you're out of whatever funk you were in."

In actions similar to house calls made by doctors in the olden days, Landry has been known to take time to visit teammates who have been struggling and seem distracted by issues off the ice. For those who know the captain, it's only fitting that his personality and fondness of going the extra mile for his teammates applies just as much off the ice as well as it does on it.

"Landry was one of the first pieces of the current team to arrive," said Davos' general manager Victor Alfredsson. "It didn't matter what the team needed, he was willing to embrace it 1000% and shatter all expectations. When I approached him about becoming a more physical presence for the team, I don't think anyone could honestly say they saw him going from two hits the season before to becoming one of the top hitters in the VHL. He's brought that same passion to being a leader for the Dynamo."

However bizarre as hanging out with teammates off the ice may seem, there have been noticeable results. After taking the VHL by storm at the center position in his first two seasons, Davey Jones has taken a bit of a step back on the stat sheet. His usual energy and confidence has suffered as a result, which resulted in a visit from his captain, a longtime teammate and friend. The very next game, Jones notched a goal and an assist. He proceeded to explode for a two goal, two assist performance against the New York Americans two days later.

"I'm not a magician," says Landry. "All I do is what I would expect a captain to do for me if I were in their situation. If you take care of the boys, they'll take care of you on the ice."

However, there is one player that has managed to elude Landry during his house calls.

"Elude isn't really the right word," elaborated Landry. "I've been able to track down Naomi Young, but every time I find her, she's in the middle of sexual intercourse. I might go above and beyond, but even that's too much."
