    Ed. 173: Sir Gay Brovalenko

    Sergey Brovalenko

Sergey Brovalenko sprung onto the scene backed by controversial member kesler17.  While he got a lot of flak in the past, but has put together a respectable career on the way.  Drafted with the final pick in the 1st round (10th Overall) by Quebec, Brovalenko changed teams three times, making him almost as big of a team whore as Leeroy Jenkins, before landing in his current home, Davos.

In his pre-draft season, he put up just 29 points in a split season between the Royals and the Wolfpack.  The low point totals could account for the low draft spot for Brovalenko, however, in his second season in the VHLM, Brovalenko put up over 100 points with the Bern Royals.  In the playoffs, despite being eliminated, Brovalenko led his Royals with sixteen points in twelve games.

In his first season with Quebec, Brovalenko put up 86 points, 59 of which were assists.  His 86 points were good for third on the Quebec roster behind Alex Valiq and Roberto Martucci.  The marriage between Brovalenko’s agent kesler17 and the Meute was short lived, as they dealt him to the Cologne Express midway through Season 33.  In a split season between the two expansion teams, Brovalenko put up 76 points, 10 less points than his rookie season, but improved his defensive play putting up more blocked shots and hits than his previous season.

The next season, he would change teams again, this time settling into Seattle, after being traded eight games into the season.  In his second split season, Brovalenko put up 83 points in 72 games, 74 with Seattle.  For the third time in as many seasons, Brovalenko would be traded to a new team, moving back to the European Conference with the rebuilding Davos Dynamo.  Fifty-One games into Season 35, the Seattle Bears traded Brovalenko to Davos in exchange for three inactives (Keiji Toriyama was inactive at the time of the trade), and two third round picks.  In Season 35, Brovalenko put up a career low 71 points.  However, it had seemed that the young, often misunderstood, forward finally found some stability in Switzerland.

Brovalenko has put up 31 points in 22 games so far with Davos, and hopes that he can lead them into the playoffs.  After a few moves in the offseason, Davos is surprising everyone at the top of the VHL standings.  They currently sit in a tie for first place with reigning champions Quebec.  The interesting thing about Davos is that they are young enough to compete for a few years, and weren’t supposed to be near the top of the league this year.  If they can keep Brovalenko around, and not trade him away, he should be a valuable asset to keep themselves competitive.  Sergey Brovalenko has certainly had his problems staying with teams, but he seems to have found some stability with Davos, and looks to stay loyal to them for a few years, which is never a bad thing.

Kesler reacted to RandomHero in Linholm off to a hot start
While the rest of his fellow New York Americans draftees are playing in New York this upcoming season, Jakob Linholm will be spending another season down in the VHLM. He was taken by the Minot Gladiators in the VHLM dispersal draft and will be playing on their first line for the season. While he is disappointed he won`t be apart of the Americans season this year, he is looking forward to just getting back to playing hockey.

“Well I`m obviously very disappointed that I won`t be playing in New York this year. I am wishing all the guys luck this season and hope that they have success this year. I am just looking forward to playing with the gladiators this season and helping them win the founders cup this year. I am just looking to do as much as I can to help increase my skills and am looking to really make my mark on the VHLM this year since I didn`t get an opportunity too last year. I`m just really excited to be back to playing the game I love.”

Linholm is off to quite the start to the season this year. After getting one point in his first game of the season, he ripped off 8 in the next two. He seems to be a favorite to challenge for the scoring title this year and looks to be using this extra season to his advantage. Linholm is looking to join the Americans next year and will be looking to help out the team anyway he can.

Minot Success Hinges Upon Top Line
The VHLM Dispersal Draft unfolded in an extremely unpredictable fashion, which was in a way almost predictable as there was a glut of players of similar talent levels and scouts opinions player to player tended to fluctuate wildly. When the dust settled and rosters for the upcoming season began to solidify, three teams seemed to stand out above the pack. Thanks to a multitude of early picks the Yukon Rush, Turku Outlaws, and Minor Gladiators stood out as the early favourites.

Bruno Wolf is expected to provide offence and leadership to a young Minot team

The Rush elected to use the draft as a way to build a balanced roster, selecting a goaltender, a forward, and a defenceman in the first round, while Turku opted to select two defenceman early before using the rest of their picks to build a deep and talented forward group. Minot was a sort of wild card in all of this, having three picks in the first round and then having to wait quite a while before making a fourth selection. With their later picks almost certainly going to be secondary players, Minot had to make their three first rounders count as those players would comprise the core of their team and a whiff on any of them would almost certainly result in a lost season.

When all was said and done at the draft Minot had elected to use their three vital picks on forwards, creating a very top heavy team that lacked goaltending or a stand out defenceman. Anybody with knowledge of the game of hockey would scoff at the idea of team building around one line, after all hockey is a team game and putting all your eggs in one basket is hardly a recipe for success. However, Minot may be an exception, simply because that the amount of talent on that one line.

Linholm's offence saw him go 2nd overall in the VHL Draft

Bruno Wolf is the trigger man of the group. Out of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Wolf is a speed demon who is as adept at scoring as he is at throwing the body. His dangerous shot will victimize VHLM goaltenders all year and his penchant for throwing big hits will have defenceman looking over their shoulders all season. When the 7th pick rolled around for Minot there was shock and pleasant surprise that Jakob Linholm was still available. Arguably the most talented player in the draft, Linholm will do it all for Minot. He plays a two-way game while still being among the most offensively dangerous players in the VHLM. Linholm would probably challenge for the VHLM scoring title playing with a pylon and a rolled up newspaper but with Wolf and Galbraith by his side he should realistically be a favourite to lead the league in scoring. Galbraith is the third wheel on that line and brings speed and a talent for playmaking to Wolf’s scoring and Linholm’s all around dominance.

Although Wolf, Linholm, and Galbraith are all wingers it is expected they will be placed together for the entirety of the year. Perhaps no team in the VHLM has as much invested in three players as Minot, as the lack of depth behind them means if they aren’t scoring odds are nobody is. Minot has in essence placed all of its hopes for success on three players, but there aren’t three other players quite like Wolf, Linholm, and Galbraith in the VHLM. The top line for the Gladiators absolutely needs to score and score often or the Gladiators simply won’t go anywhere this season, the overwhelming talent that comprises that line just might be enough to overcome deficiency’s elsewhere. At the very least Gladiator games will be exciting this year as the goals should be coming fast and furious. However it remains to be seen if the firepower from line one will see the Gladiators come out on top of these track meets more often than not, only time will tell if Minots strategy of stacking one line will be successful.

There should be a lot of these going off in Minot this year

Recapping the 1st Round of the S37 VHLM Dispersal Draft

While I have only been in the VHL since Season 27, the S37 VHLM Dispersal Draft is possibly the best VHLM Draft in league history. In fact, I’d say that many of the players taken in the second round this year would have been first round picks in previous drafts. In this article, I will be looking into the first round of the draft and discussing why each team drafted the player they did.

    1.   YUKON RUSH (from Oslo): Kimmo Salo

As the only goalie in the draft, Salo instantly provides the Rush with the best goalie in the VHLM. Many experts predicted Yukon’s first pick weeks ago, as the retirement of Zach Fucale forced Yukon to look elsewhere to solve their goaltending problem. After Yukon failed to sign a goalie in free agency, it was all but written on the wall who Yukon’s first pick would be.

    2.   TURKU OUTLAWS: Jake Wylde
Wylde was an excellent pick for the Outlaws, as he projects to be a star defenseman for Turku this year. While Wylde only declared for the draft a few days beforehand, he has been given the benefit of the doubt by most teams due to his agent’s success with previous players. If Wylde pans out as projected, Turku will be in for a Wylde ride this year (pun intended).
      3.   MINOT GLADIATORS (from Ottawa): Bruno Wolf

Wolf is another player who declared just a few days before the draft. Just like Wylde, his agent has a history of producing quality players in the VHL, so he must be given the benefit of the doubt. As soon as Wolf declared for the draft, he was projected by many experts to be drafted by Minot due to his agent’s excellent relationship with the Gladiator’s GM.

    4.   YUKON RUSH (from Oslo): Konstantin Azhishchenkov

Konstantin Azhishchenkov, also known as KJA, projects to be Yukon’s first-line center as he has already logged a high amount of practice hours. Many experts expected KJA to be selected before Yukon’s fourth pick due to his brimming potential. I’m sure Yukon was thrilled when they found out KJA was still available with their fourth pick.

    5.   TURKU OUTLAWS (from Saskatoon): Vojzek Svoboda

Svoboda is another player who has an agent with an excellent track record of success. He projects to be a star defenseman as well, and will combine with Wylde to possibly make the best defensive pairing in the league. Svoboda was another player projected to be taken higher in the draft, and I’m sure Turku was glad to be in the position to draft him.

    6.   TURKU OUTLAWS (from Vasteras): Travis Boychuk

Boychuk should provide the Outlaws with a first-line center capable of producing lots of points. Few expected much of Boychuk last season after he was claimed off waivers by Ottawa. However, Boyhchuk showed a lot of potential in his half season with Ottawa, and was coveted by many VHLM scouts.

    7.   MINOT GLADIATORS: Jakub Linholm

Linholm has the talent to be a top-three selection in most other VHLM drafts, and thus was a great selection for Minot. Linholm should provide Minot with an excellent scoring threat on the left wing and will likely be a major factor in Minot’s success this season.

    8.   BERN ROYALS: Logan Laich

Many scouts had Laich pegged as the most talented player in the draft. Unfortuneatly for Bern, Laich has too much talent and most likely will not be playing in the VHLM this year. This really hurts Bern’s chances of competing for a cup this year as they essentialy lost a first round pick.

    9.   MINOT GLADIATORS (from Yukon): Ashton Galbraith

Galbraith adds to Minot’s stockpile of wingers, as he is another forward with a lot of potential. Galbraith should provide Minot with plenty of points this year as he has the talent to be a top-five pick in previous drafts. It will be interesting to see which winger Minot drafted winds up on the second line, as all three of them are worthy of the first line.

    10.   YUKON RUSH (from Oslo): Don Draper

Yukon’s selection of Draper was the shock of the draft as many scouts had Draper projected as a second round pick at best. However, Yukon sees great potential in this young defenseman and hopes that he can play on the top defensive pairing with Triton Jackson. Experts say that Yukon wanted Draper badly, and since they didn’t have another pick until the third round they decided to pull the trigger.

Travis Boychuk Drafted to the Turku Outlaws

The VHLM Dispersal Draft was underway today and Travis Boychuk found his team for the year. He was drafted 6th overall to the Turku Outlaws, along with plenty others. The team looks to be heading fast into contention on paper, but we will wait to see what happens once the season begins. With many top players heading to Turku, it will be difficult to find ice time. Turku had 3 picks in the 1st Round and 6 in the 2nd Round, so it is needless to say that there is a ton of talent heading there. Boychuk will play the year in Turku before heading up to Calgary in the VHL.
    --------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------
It should be challenging for the coach to find the right line combinations heading forward, with all of the skill in the line up. Many think that Boychuk should be a shoe in for 1st line duties, but nothing is certain. He has improved a ton this off-season with a lot of training involved. It will be interesting to see what he can accomplish without being in the shadow of a more developed, bigger superstar. We caught up with TB for an interview on the topic:

" I am extremely pleased to come to Turku for next season. It might take a little bit to find which players I play better with, but I am sure with all the talent here we can succeed with plenty of combinations. I have worked hard all off-season to become a better player on the ice, and I really think it will pay off. All of these new players coming to the Outlaws, we need to get familiar with each other quickly. I have already been to training camp with the VHL Calgary club, and came straight to Turku as soon as I got signed to be with this training camp. I am very excited to start the season. "

Brovalenko was my second every player (Smirnov being the first). I put alot into this player, I have grown a lot as a member and as a graphics person. I have loved my time on this site and look forward to checking in on the site every morning and every day after school. I would like the thank guys like Koradek, Kendrick, Greg and Victor for all being my GM's and having to put up with me for how ever long I was on their teams. For the major part of Brovalenko's career I was not in a competing spot, winning the cup this past season was great and would love to repeat.

To all my teammates, you have all been great! Every teammate I have had have been so great and have been so supportive. I would do shout outs to all those who I have met on this roller coaster of a career, but the list would be so long and really, the grammar mistakes would be an un amount-able.
