  1. ^ my experience so far VHL is a business. You plan ahead. Players are pawns. There is a human side to it, but it's toned down, compared to the M, for sure.
  2. Discipline sucks. Plain and simple. I liked having an original build with SS Hornet. And I just drowned it in the sink. I recalled two hits of 10 discipline, going all the way from 70 to 50. Power forward it is now. By the start of next season, I'll have 70 or 80 checking probably. So there you have it. Experiment failed, discipline is not helping me. And it's definitely not helping Davos win games. Don't try it at home kids. But now it's time for that new version update of SS Hornet. Let's just pretend the backstory there is a nasty hit to the head fucked his algorithm up and he became a blood-thristy machine. So you all know what that means. Pick me 1oa in VHFL, gimme a Boulet, gimme a Brooks, gimme MVP. I was punk, I went off tracks, but I want my songs to play on radio too you know. I want it all. And you can't get it all when you do your own shit. I sold off. I sold my soul. I sold my integrity. SS Hornet 2.0, now with 100% more aggression and award-winning potential.
  3. the game that got me back at ppg fix me
  4. 1. There is no better feeling than killing the enemy. 2. Yes, I have some stuff in mind, but unless the value is stupid good, I'm fine with staying put for now. 3. The HC Davos Dynamo, for obvious reasons, I guess. 4. REDACTED. To be fair, there are a couple of recreates I really like in this next draft and we should have like a top 5 pick, so we should be good to get one of them. 5. I found about the VHL on r/ehm - RIP Reddit recruitment. I've been here over 2 years now, I think. Actually insane when you think about it. 6. The Dynamo used to be one of the logos I hated the most, but now it grew on me. Not sure if it's my favourite, but I really like it. It's up there with D.C., Malmo, London. Thanks for the Qs, Rupie!
  5. lab - McW pairing, I can get behind it
  6. I was surprised too but none of the 7 teams that joined the league since Moscow won a Cup.
  7. Dream Teams. Love the theme this season. I helped pick it, so obviously I do. Better than @GustavMattias' alternative, that's for sure. At first I was going to go all-meme with it, do like a London United alumni team, with literally only Lesieur and inactive fillers, but opted to push it farther and do an all-time best expansion draftees squad, composed only by players that were once drafted in an expansion draft. The players selected on this squad all had an impact on the team that drafted them, I'm not just picking players that were selected and traded straight away, just because that's what expansions are all about. Like that time D.C. selected future Hall of Famer Maxim Kovalchuk. So, a bit of context first, there has been 5 expansions in league history: - S31; 2 new teams - the Quebec City Meute (now the Vancouver Wolves) and the Cologne Express (now defunct) - S65; 1 new team - the Moscow Menace - S66; 1 new team - the Malmo Nighthawks - S68; 2 new teams - the D.C. Dragons and the Pragues Phantoms - S73; 4 new teams - the Chicago Phoenix, the Los Angeles Stars, the London United and the Warsaw Predators Dan Baillie | LW | 958 TPE @wcats Selected in S65, from the HC Davos Dynamo 174 G, 226 A, 400 PTS in 432 GP with Moscow Dan Baillie is currently the only player in the history of the league to win a Continental Cup with the team that selected him in an expansion draft. He was selected by Moscow a year after Davos picked him in the VHL Entry Draft, and he stayed with the team up until S70, his penultimate season, during which he recorded career highs with 32 goals, 45 assists and 77 points, as well as winning the elusive Continental Cup. He was an incredibly constant factor in Moscow's offense, scoring between 25 and 32 goals for his six straight seasons with the team. Matthew Materazo | C | 987 TPE @Matt_O Selected in S66, from the New York Americans 129 G, 125 A, 254 PTS in 288 GP with Malmo Matthew Materazo was once a prized 2nd round steal for a rebuilding New York team, and they elected to not protect him in the expansion draft, for reasons, I guess. That brought him in Malmo, where he played four seasons, scoring at least 30 goals every season. His best season was his second in Sweden, when he scored 36 goals and 38 assists for 74 points, establishing himself as the first star of the Nighthawks. Mikko Aaltonen | RW | 1140 TPE @GRZ Selected 4th overall in S68, from the Riga Reign 193 G, 228 A, 421 PTS in 432 GP with D.C. Arguably the best selection ever from an expansion draft, the D.C. Dragons got incredible from Mikko Aaltonen. He scored 40 goals in his first season with the team, then 35 for three straight seasons, for a total of 193 in 6 seasons playing in the American capital. He has been the face of the franchise - along with zombie GW, probably - from the moment he was selected up to his retirement following S73. He probably still holds a bunch of franchise records, and it's really just a shame that he was never able to win it all with the team. Radislav Mjers | D | 798 TPE @InstantRockstar Selected 1st overall in S31, from the Seattle Bears 30 G, 58 A, 88 PTS in 72 GP in Cologne Radislav Mjers only played with the now-defunct Cologne Express for one season, but he produced more in that one season than any other defenseman ever selected in expansion drafts. He led the German franchise in scoring in their inaugural season with 88 points, so there's that. Paolo Nano | D | 772 TPE @leafsman Selected in S65, from the Helsinki Titans 46 G, 195 A, 241 PTS in 310 GP This one stretches the rules of this very dream team a bit, as @Victor sent Paolo Nano to the New York Americans midway through his first season with the team, but signed him in free agency the upcoming offseason, basically giving Moscow free value for him. The Italian mobster was literally the only defenseman playing for the Menace in S66 and S67, leading him to score over 60 points in two straight seasons despite his relatively low TPE. In S67, he finished fifth in defensemen scoring in a close race for the top spot. Johnny Havenk Carison | G | 583 TPE @Donno100 Selected in S66, from the Toronto Legion 27 W, .917 SV%, 2.86 GAA in 65 GP with Malmo Johnny Havenk Carison only started with Malmo for a single season, but he makes this all-expansion team because he is the only goalie ever taken in a VHL expansion draft. Yes.
  8. If the season ended today, the Chicago Ashes would rise and make the playoffs. But they're only one point ahead of Calgary and the 6th position. I'm betting they miss them. The London United once again got the worse differential in the whole league, but they are only 3rd last in the overall standings, meaning they'd probably pick 3rd or 4th. What is wrong with Calgary? Weren't they a game or two away from the finals last season? And now they're out of the playoffs. And what's up with D.C.? They have been bad for a while, I thought it was the new them, that they'd rebuild or something. And now they are well into the playoff picture. Unless... jinxed! Why is Condor Adrienne on a 40-goal pace? Some shit is happening since we expanded the league and decreased rosters size. I'm always impressed to see how quickly we get to 150 words. That's it already. See yall next week
  9. Didn't they just win like 4 cups in 6 seasons or something?
  10. The United Report BY ROGER McWOLF III AUG 27 2020 x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x Our 13 points in 21 games so far in S74 put us on pace for 44 on the season, which is down from our inaugural season's 48. Not a significant drop, but when you were the 2nd worst team in the league once season, you start saying things like 'There's nowhere to go but up,' until you realize that it's actually possible to do worse than you did the previous year. I think two main reasons can explain this early season dip. x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x Goaltending is somehow worse than last season. Goaltending in our inaugural season was a major problem. We allowed a league-high 300 goals. We have to go back to the historically bad inaugural season of the Moscow Menace in S65 to find the last time a team allowed more than 300 goals in a single season. It was to be expected, though. Our roster had one active actual defenseman, a couple of inactive forwards turned blueliners - which is still the case this season, I'm sorry Rose - and a circus of old and/or robotic trash in front of the net. Clayton Park, Juan Jaundice and BLEEDING have never been starter-caliber, but they were asked to take on the role following our inability to acquire an actually starting netminder before our first campaign started. Nils Friedriksen, who was acquired from Calgary during the S73 Entry Draft, was supposed to be a short term solution for us but, so far, he's actually been worse than the hot mess that was our netminder situation last season. His save percentage of .894 and his goal against average of 4.21 are not the step up we expected from the team-wide .897 and 4.09 numbers we registered last season. Season is still young however - Nils can still turn it around and win us some games. x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x A star left - and no one is ready to take his place. We knew what we were getting into when we traded Guy Lesieur away. He was far and away our best player, but he was in the later half of his career. He didn't fit in the franchise's timeline as he was at his peak when we were at our worst - but he would have been an old retiring player when we would be grazing our peak. Left behind is a roster composed entirely of players on rookie contracts. Obviously, none of these youngsters has the skills to directly replace Lesieur. We have a ton of future stars on the roster who will eventually be there though, so it's only a matter of time before scoring is back at a respectable level for the team. x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x Roger McWolf III LONDON UNITED GENERAL MANAGER
  11. THEPLAYERSTRIBUNE What it means to be a locker room leader BY SS HORNET AUG 26 2020 " 2 seasons down, 6 more to go. I entered the VHL right after getting selected in the Season 72 Entry Draft, I played on the 2nd line most of these 2 first seasons, I got better every season, and here we are now - I'm what is generally considered as a veteran. The locker room around me changed a lot this offseason. We were set for great things last season, with a bunch of veterans leading Davos, but somehow, we couldn't get it done. My algorithm shows that we should have done a lot better, we should have gone a lot deeper into the playoffs. " On paper - we're set for major regression, but I am more than ready for it. We lost Jet Jaguar, Jerry Garcia, Charlie Paddywagon, who all retired following our disappointing loss to Malmo in the Wild Card round. You compare the before and after and obviously, the roster got a bit worse, but it means that some players on the team get to have bigger roles now. It's especially true for Robin Winter and I. We are both entering our 3rd season and are both set to be much more important for the team moving forward. Robin was an alternate captain for the team last season, and he will retain his role this season. Now, as a steambot, I don't really understand complex human feelings. My algorithm can emulate some of them, but I'm still not capable of positively affecting my teammates morale - their will to play the hardest they can so we can achieve our common objective of winning hockey games. In that regard, I have a lot to learn from Robin. I plan on playing for Davos as long as I can, especially if Robin sticks around for a while too. But even if I can't be a morale booster, a great human leader that makes others around him better, I get to be a leader in my own way. I got promoted to first line duties this season, sharing a line with some of the better players in the league in Soren Jensen and Roque Davis. I get to be the top center around such great players, which means I get to show the extent of my skillset, the true potential I showed glimpse of for the past three seasons in Las Vegas and now in Davos. " I play a clean game - I win faceoffs, I shoot a lot and I draw more penalties than I take myself. From I what I see around the league, I play a unique style. Aggression is at an all-time high, with most forwards prioritizing hits over cleaner alternatives. Per my program's calculations, it seems like my style of play might be better for the team's overall performance. With the trio of players leaving Davos via retirement, I believe we truly need that type of strictly positive script going on for us. That's the type of leader, the type of veteran, I choose to be right now. Who knows, maybe a couple years down the line, after looking at current captain Fernando Jokinen long enough, I'll be able to become a great motivator in the locker room as well, but there's still so much I don't understand from humans. 19. The United Captains We took the decision as a team last season to not name a captain for our inaugural season. Instead, we named our 4 active members alternate captains, giving each of them a chance to represent our expansion franchise. One season later, we are ready to officially name our first ever captain - and his two alternates. Over the last day, we held a team vote to determine who were the most deserving. So, here are the triplets that are going to be decorated with the three letters of leadership, representing the London United on and off the ice for the next 2 months or so.
