Review: Nice attention to detail with the 3 jersey changes. It would be nice to see some more elements brought in, maybe some text and some stocks and effects to focus on the render more. Keep at it.

    Flowers Still a Top Pick?
Yukon Territory -- When he originally declared for the VHLM at least season's trade deadline, defenseman Lance Flowers was at the top of the charts for potential Season 68 draft picks. However, less than one season later, some are starting to believe that he might not be as high a pick as originally believed.

As it currently, Flowers is indeed one of two players in the upcoming draft above the 200 TPE cap. However, due to a number of different factors, Philadelphia defenseman Condor Adrienne has blown by Flowers in the overall standings. Meanwhile, forwards Eller and Underyew are coming up on Flowers quickly, and other players further down the TPE rankings may show more upside.

Does that concern Flowers? Not particularly. He's happy to work on his skills at his own rate, and for the rest, he believe it'll all come out in the wash. "I'm happy with my work so far, and wherever I land in the draft, I'll land," he explained. "Mock drafts are for the blog boys online. Teams know what I'm about, and if I fall down the draft, so be it. I can't make peoples' decisions for them."

As it currently stands, Flowers has been an excellent passer and checker, as expected. His 14 assists, 20 shots blocked and 36 hits are all in the top 10 of all VHLM players.

Today I had a chance to interview Halifax 21’s general manager Aran Thranduil.  I know how rare it is for a VHLM player to interview an opposing gm, so I appreciate his time in letting me follow through.  Halifax handed my Ottawa Lynx their first loss of the season and are sitting at 8-4-1 good for 17 points and 4th in the VHLM.  Here are Aran Thranduil’s thoughts on the VHLM

    1. How long and what got you interested in the VHL?

AT:  As a child, I used to watch a lot of VHL hockey with my dad and brother. It appealed more to me than the NHL, because of the international aspect. As far as I am aware, the VHL is the only league with teams in both North America and Europe, and I feel like that is what makes it special. As a young GM, the VHLM was a good gateway to get into the league I loved so much, so in S63, I picked up a job as the assistant general manager of the Oslo Storm (now Minnesota Storm), after some early practice with local midget teams. Flash forward a few years and here I am now.

    2. I know a lot of the VHLM players are rookies so what helps you distinguish between them?

AT:  For me it is a big help to interview the players prior to signing or drafting them. I think you can tell a lot about a player's potential and work ethic, from his attitude. Obviously, there isn't always a chance for an interview, so I like to play it safe, and not sign a huge amount of rookies, while making sure my development and coaching staff strongly focuses on the few that we do sign.

    3. I know everyone wants to win a championship, but what are some other goals you have for your team?

At:  I like to see my players get drafted high. When I see a player from go in the first round, I know I've succeeded as a GM. I also like to make sure we develop a positive locker-room atmosphere throughout the year, and that the players all have a good experience, whether we win or not. Another thing I pride myself in is never having a rebuild. Halifax has been able to stay competitive for 5 straight seasons, in a league that is generally a 2 year cycle between contending and rebuilding. Our overall record since we joined the league 5 seasons ago, is by far the best over the last 5 season, of any other team, and I'm definitely proud of that.

    4. What player that you helped developed (either your own or another users) are you most proud of?

AT: I'd say Julius Freeman. He played in Halifax throughout S65, and went from an unknown rookie, to our leading scorer, and then ended up going 2nd overall in the draft. He came so far, considering how much better the eventual 3rd overall pick and a bunch of other players were than him at the start of the season. It was awesome to him go from a nobody to a star in less than a season.

    5. What is the most difficult or time consuming everyday duty you have as a GM?

AT: Probably figuring out who to draft, sign and trade for. It is always tough to know how well a player will do, and there is always worry that you could be missing out on a great player, by signing them, but you could also end up stuck with a player you can't really utilize. Making good decisions in this area, is a big part of maintaining a competitive roster each season. The other half is up to the coach, to train, develop, and keep the players in enthusiastic.

    6. What do you look for in a player?

AT: Attitude. I believe any player can do well with the right attitude, regardless of their initial skillset. I'm more likely to draft a super enthusiastic rookie, than a player that has had some experience and success, but has a poor attitude.

    7. What advice would you give for VHLM rookies who have a shot at moving up to the big leagues next season?

AT:   Don't focus on your draft ranking position. The draft will come when it does, and it isn't good to get wrapped up in all the hype or lack thereof. Focus on making yourself better, and when the draft comes, you will be taken where you will. There is no point in getting all down and out if a player beats you out in the draft rankings, so stop caring what other people say about you, and just play your game. If you stick to it long enough, eventually people will see you for the player you are. Also, don't worry about producing in the VHLM. It is a very different league than the VHL, and I know a lot of players who were average in the VHLM, but lit it up in their rookie VHL season. The VHLM is just a development league, not meant to be taken too seriously.

    8. Who is the best player that you had a shot at getting but missed out on?

AT: Very hard to say. There have been lots over the years. In the S64 VHLM draft, we could have easily drafted Diljodh Starload. We had 6 picks before Starload was taken, and being under the impression that he planned to head to the VHL, we avoided him. However, he decided to stay down and was one of the best players in the league that season. Later on, we made a trade for him, but it was very costly for us. Would have been way easier just to draft him. Starload is now a big star in the VHL.

    9. Who is your "VHL Idol"?

AT:  In terms of GMs, I think I like Shawn Glade's methods the best. He knows how to create a positive locker-room atmosphere, and I've heard nothing but good things about him. For a short time before he was promoted to the VHL, I was his AGM, and he started his career as the GM of Halifax as well. He makes amazing trades, pulling in loads of picks for his team. I aspire to be like him.

Hello, I'm going to go ahead and put my name in, cause I figure why not. There is a lot of amazing applicants, an so I just figured it'd be a fun time to just throw my name in. I am currently at what I'd consider to be my "peak" status for activity. I've not missed a single week of updating, I've been very active as both a player and a GM since my return, and I think now would be the best time to come back, my little "resume" over the course of my sim league career includes:

VHLM GM (Ottawa, Kolari, Oslo, San Diego)
    VHL GM (Riga)
    EFL/NCAA GM (Notre Dame x2)
    SBA/NCAA GM (Arizona)

I've also GM'd in leagues such as VFL, SSN, and so many others I can't even keep track. On top of that, I've also been a grader, updater, you name it, I've probably held every job possible at least once in most of the leagues.

I know what to do at this level, I know how to do it well at the VHL level and I'd like to give it another go, with my commitment being this high and my attitude being there and my drive to work being there, I know I can be the best VHL GM I personally can be. Like I said, also with my activity where it is, I feel like now is the best time to take control of the VHL team and really solidify them as my own .

Thanks for the consideration and as always good luck to all the amazing applicants, from what I've seen I can already tell this will be fun.

The Ottawa Lynx recently unveiled the team's leadership squad. Zeno Miniti and Anthony Hawk will be the assistants, while rookie Thorny Underyew will lead the team as captain. Underyew was surprised to be recognized so early in his career.

"It's amazing. To be trusted by the entire team and coaching staff is a blessing. I'm not the leading scorer or anything, but I try to lead by example and work at every aspect of my game. I suppose that's why they chose me."

The Lynx are off to an impressive start, dropping only 2 of their first 10 games. In their most recent 2 games, they combined for an incomprehensible 118 shots. Underyew has started the season at over a point-per-game pace, and he expects to improve as the season goes along. The team looks to improve defensively, having given up 39 goals in 10 games, despite above-average goaltending.

VHLM Weekly Recap:  Ottawa Lynx (July 12 - July 19)

After the first ten games, there’s a little bit of a surprise at the top of the VHLM standings.  You could argue that Minnesota’s 11 goals in 15 games is a surprise.  While impressive, that’s not quite it.  Philadelphia being 2nd? Nope.  The reigning champs are having a good run so far, though.  How about a team that has beaten Philly.  The Ottawa Lynx.  The Lynx are 8-2 so far on the year.  That is good enough for third place and only one point behind 2nd place Philadelphia.

The Lynx early season success may come as a shock to some, who thought the former runners up would struggle.  However, new GM Acydburn has assembled a team he believes in.  Acyd knew the team would be competitive despite replacing some key pieces from last season.  “We were built to be competitive.” The general manager stated. As far as statistical leaders, Ottawa’s Zeno Miniti leads the league in goals and points. The 2nd year forward has 10 goals and 11 assists so far.  Last year with Houston, he had 41 points in 72 games.  It’s safe to say he is looking to surpass that this year.  Anthony Hawk is 5th in the league in assists with 11.  This season he has 18 points already passing his point total last year with Philadelphia.  Defenseman Aamon Grim is shutting down the opposition, leading the league with a +13.  For his career he is +27 showing why he was drafted 30th overall.  Rookie Finnegan McBurn has chipped in offensively since being brought in from Las Vegas.

On the goaltending side,  the results depends on who you talk to.  Rookie Raymond Bernard, who was drafted 40th overall despite a lot of scouts not seeing him, is 8-1 on the year.  His GAA and save percentage are 3.06 and .873% respectively.  Bernard has expressed some displeasure with those numbers, but Acyd has reminded him it’s a team game.  You can’t argue with the win loss record, either.  Backup Samuel Ross has seen 1 game, a 5-3 loss to Saskatchewan.  He is rather active in the locker room, though.

Upcoming for the Lynx is the much anticipated matchup with the number one Minnesota Storm.  The big question is can the offense of the Lynx figure out Storm goalie Justin Cole?  Cole is off to an amazing start.  He’s 11-0 with 5 shutouts, a GAA of  1.34 and a save percentage of .921.  The defensive corps of Ottawa will have to deal with big bodied forward Berocka Sundqvist.  He’s off to a 22 point start to the year, making him one of the VHL’s best.  Another problem that is rearing it’s head this young season is the amount of penalties Ottawa is taking.    The Lynx are led in that category by Anthony Hawk who has 24.  He does, however, league the VHLM in hits with 61.  Hopefully he can keep the physical play up and the penalties down and lead Ottawa to a huge upset.    That’s all for this week’s edition of the Ottaw Lynx weekly recap.  Check back in Next week, where we are hoping to get an interview with some Lynx players and GM AcydBurn.
