Choosing a Hall of Famer years after their retirement is no easy task. Undoubtedly, trying to guess which active player(s) has a shot at legendary status is even harder. There is, however, one exception: Hunter Hearst Helmsley. More commonly known as HHH, he already has the 3rd-most TPE out of all active players, and he is 3 seasons younger than both of the players above him. Both of those players will be forced to retire at the end of the season, leaving HHH as the player with the most TPE and TPA. Not only that, but he has earned all of this TPE before hitting regression, meaning all of it which he does not bank has been applied without penalty. As a result, he has 99 Skating, Puck Handling, Faceoffs, Passing, Scoring, and Defense in addition to 70 Checking, and 80 Strength. Not only is he incredibly skilled physically, but he also is a great presence in the locker room with his 76 Leadership. While he has yet to win an award in the big leagues, he won all three of the Mitch Higgins (Regular Season MVP), Ethan Osbourne (Regular Season Points), and Alexander Chershenko (Regular Season Goals) Awards/Trophies in his only full VHLM season. He was already part of the Victory Cup-winning Vancouver Wolves team in Season 69, and he has been nominated for a variety of awards, having garnered at least a vote for the Brett Slobodzian Trophy, Scott Boulet Trophy, and Dustin Funk Trophy, and he was nominated for the Scotty Campbell Trophy. All of this came just last season. Somehow, he didn’t even make the All-Rookie team in his first season. Yet, after now guaranteeing his second point-per-game season in a row and approaching point-per-game status for his career, Helmsley is widely acknowledged as one of, if not, the best players in the game. After this season concludes, he will still have half of his career to go. Will he hit regression? Of course. But between store purchases to lessen the pain and almost 100 TPE banked already - with more surely on the way, it’s essentially a foregone conclusion that HHH will stay at an elite level for the rest of his career. His agent, Keaton Louth, has already won the David Knight Trophy once and has remained one of the best GMs around ever since. Oh, and said agent is also the General Manager of HHH’s team, so there’s no doubt that HHH will always be put in the best position to succeed. The only question that remains is, will the Hall of Fame committee recognize Helmsley’s sustained excellence to join the legends in the Hall despite a lack of silverware to show for it, at least for the first half of his career? They better. It’s the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Trophy-Winners. While some hardware for his trophy cabinet would surely help, HHH has been robbed of awards throughout his career. The Committee shouldn’t punish him for things outside of his control; HHH has continued to be an excellent player, teammate, and leader, and, if he continues at his current pace, he deserves to be a lock for immortality.
