    Hi All,

With @samx stepping down to be a GM, Helsinki Management has an opening once again.

This obviously means I'm looking for a new AGM
I'll be looking for someone who can help out with pressers, draft scouting and interviews, trade knowledge, lines and locker room presence.

If this is of interest to you post here or hit me up on discord for a chat!

So I posted a status update a couple weeks ago in which I talked about a big project I'm doing...it's not done yet, so I think I'll take the opportunity to squeeze a few TPE out of a progress report (because how hard can that be? At the end of this sentence, I'll already be 14% of the way to the required word count, and I haven't even told you anything).

I won't get into the why and the how, but I will get into telling you that this involves projections of every VHL roster. I'm trying to fully automate it, but I don't think I know enough to do that and I've settled for semi-automating it (and maybe at some point I'll be able to plug something in to take care of the rest. I like to think it's possible but I don't know). We're talking roster space, cap, TPE projections for every player, taking rookie and prime contracts into account and making sure we adjust for depreciation where necessary. It's taught me a couple things team-wise, too, because I'm not entirely up on that--Chicago is set to be in major trouble in a couple seasons' time, almost no matter what, and Helsinki has done a better job of resource management than I thought. But I digress.

My point here is that math is hard. Even with numbers on my side for this kind of thing (yes, some of you have written articles that I'm going to cite), things still get thrown off. One would expect to see close to what I as an engineer would call a steady-state situation--players enter and leave at just about equal rates, and average roster and cap numbers across the league stay the same. But this is really difficult to capture accurately on a spreadsheet--just about every active prospect has a chance at making it up, but you can't just decide that someone who is earning now will stay earning in the future. So, you go in and assign everyone different "chances" of making it up and hope for the best.

The problem at this point is balance--you get roster numbers that look good enough, your cap numbers are also way off. You get cap right, your rosters get screwy. And, most importantly, something else I've realized is this: if you do "assume steady state" (I'll ping @JardyB10 here to give him a flashback or two) and make your projections just about equal the current numbers, then, a) congrats, you've successfully manipulated the data to give you what you want (and, to clarify, that is not a good thing), and b) what's even the point if you're trying to track the average numbers over time? If you knew they were going to look exactly the same when you finished, you could have just said that to begin with and saved yourself the trouble.

My second point is that I think it's basically impossible to track the future of the entire league. What I'm doing can be very valuable, and I think any individual GM running an individual team could find their own projections a helpful tool to plan their team's future. It's at the very least a decent guesstimate that I used myself as a GM and that always gave me a pretty darn accurate picture of what would happen to my team. I saw a (no disrespect) pretty bad projection of league sizes a while back and would like to caution against oversimplifying that sort of thing, even if I'm arguably overcomplicating it.

But lastly, I'd like to advise people to read carefully because there will be points where it doesn't appear that what I'm saying matches the numbers. There's so much scientific stuff out there that carries multiple conclusions. Sometimes, those conclusions aren't always obvious, and I feel like it's possible to wildly misinterpret the projections as accurate.

It will be a good read, I promise--just with some caveats. See you when I get around to it.

Rayzor_7 reacted to Beketov in Official End of the Lottery Tournament
    Hello everyone,

I know there are some who won’t be pleased to hear this but the league has decided to end the practice of the Lottery Tournament.

It was originally created to give non-playoff teams something to look at sim wise which is good in theory but in practice it has often been completely ignored by both the players and GM’s involved in it. Additionally complications have arisen with the varying lottery odds involving teams not owning their own pick and therefore, intentionally or otherwise, harming another team by choosing to ignore or tank their lines in the tournament. Lastly it just adds more simming time required to a sim team that already has 3 sets of playoffs and multiple off season tournaments to worry about.

So, for all of those reasons, S88 will officially mark the final lottery tournament and moving forward they will not be held. Instead lottery odds will be locked at the following:

    1. 25.0%
    2. 20.0%
    3. 17.5%
    4. 15.0%
    5. 12.5%
    6.  10.0%

These will still give an advantage to the worse teams, versus the old equal odds that we used pre-tournament, but will keep all teams with at least a decent shot at winning. All other rules regarding the draft lottery (only dropping 1 spot, etc) will remain the same.

@VHL GM this is obviously most important for you guys so just throwing a tag there for good measure.

Well Helsinki helstunk as the season closed out on us. It's on me, couldn't figure out how to get the lines rolling despite the big increase in talent we somehow went worse for wear. It'll be a tough one to wear but onward to the offseason now.
We're looking to improve and push into a competitive window but youth and building come first, we need to not spend too heavily as it could cost us the long run at things and end up being a short swing for the fences. Not a bad idea but way to early to be thinking about that.
Our roster looks solid with a few holes to plug, bringing in Dok already makes the team feel better and he'll get along just fine with the crew. Always excited to bring an ex teammate around to the team, especially one whos been to the chip and won a few times. Now to plug more holes

Our death has been greatly exaggerated. Helsinki while not having the strongest of midseason's it's also not a big concern for us. 5-3-2 in our last 10 while not great means we are managing 12/20 possible points, ideally we'd like to be getting more than that and we'll be trying to swing things in our favour again soon. I'd like to see us limit our PIMs a bit more but we're doing okay handling the ensuing PKs from it.
Helsinki is looking to make trades still to upgrade their team but will be remembering that this core is still very young and the window to compete is only just starting. With the goalie spot set for the future Helsinki will be looking to upgrade their offence and defence cores instead.

I'm happy to see this core doing so well so early on, we know it's still early on and lots can happen in the last 30ish games but our goal of fighting for a playoff spot is well under way already.

The rivalry between Helsinki and Davos has been heated for a while and it just got hotter with Helsinki making some moves to strengthen their team.  As a member of the best team in the league, HC Davos, this posturing by Helsinki has gotten my attention, thus the article.

Just twenty three games into the season, Helsinki finds itself on top of the European Conference.  Recent pick ups of Baxter Arcanum, @ctots, and Ryui Sakamoto, @der meister, has pretty much solidified an already solid defensive core.  Helsinki GM, @Rayzor_7, is definitely making a run for the cup with these moves, given that Helsinki, although winning most of their games, has let quite a few pucks into the net.  Rayzor must see this as a situation that needed changing and relying on his forwards to score more goals than the opponents each game.

When you dissect the Helsinki scoring, it looks weary for the opponents.  Even though it’s early in the season, Helsinki has already established a strong footing in the points category.  Nils Godlander, @Moon, leads the team in points and the league in goals scored.  Matty Fire, @MattyFired, is an evenly paced contributor, who consistently puts up amazing numbers.  And then there is Mo Probert, @Yahtzee, who’s namesake tells it all, is in the top ten in points, and dominates the defensive stats.  Probert’s bone crushing hits put him in the penalty box a lot, yet he still manages to be a point leader.

I could go on and on about the strength of Helsinki and their posturing for winning a cup, but why give them any more credit!  Its time to trash them and keep this rivalry alive and kicking.  As Thunder’s defensive partner @Ahma prefers the Titans be called by their true identity, Helstinky, every match between Davos and Helstinky has become a playoff match; a competitive duel that brings satisfaction only to the winners and sadness to the losers.

There is an upcoming game between the true best team in the league, HC Davos, and the pretending team Helsinki.  If Davos wins game 201, then Davos will take a series lead of 3-1 for the season.  If Davos should be unlucky and lose this game, then the rivalry will be a dead heat, with two teams matched up for the next battle.

Rayzor may have placed all his eggs in one basket for the cup, Davos GM Alex, has been nothing but amazing with his roster moves and game preparation every season.  Like Rayzor, Alex builds a solid team with players who bring out the best in their teammates.  Alex relies upon exciting goal scoring forwards with a solid defense and a net minder who will likely be the Christian Stolzchweiger recipient.  Lachlan Summers is just beginning to show his dominance in goal and as the season progresses and his confidence in net rises, so will all his stats.

So what’s next for the rivalry?  Is the game today going to quell some of the chatter and put some freshly deserved relaxation into Davos, or is Helsinki going to cause teeth to clench whenever the name is brought up?  Only Simon knows.  Stay tuned…

Rayzor_7 reacted to Alex in VSN Presents: Building a Contender - Calgary
I have decided to take a swing at a new segment where I’ll be asking VHL GMs to pick a trade that they have made that they believe led to their current success, to start things off with last season’s champion the Calgary Wranglers. GM @Ricer13 selected this trade:

Which to date, has developed into this:

Just to provide some context on the above trade tree, here is what each colour means; Green = Still on team and playing; Light Blue = Prospect for team; Orange = Played and retired with team; Yellow = Played and was traded; Blue = Team has pick and not used yet; Red = Never played for team and is current FA. Also in this case to keep things a bit more organized, boxes are around Helsinki’s return for several of the trades.

Will start things off with Calgary, and the S84 HSK 3rd and Lenny Sanderson @Gally. Calgary used the 3rd to draft Lorenzo Cobberson @Hendrix Cobberson, who never played for Calgary and is currently playing for Cologne in the VHLE. Lenny Sanderson never played for Calgary and is currently a IA free agent. Neither player was traded.

The only other piece Calgary acquired and did not trade was the S83 SEA 1st. With that pick Calgary selected Leandro Goncalves @leandrofg. To date Goncalves has played in 308 games with Calgary and has 145 goals and 156 assists for a total of 301 points, Goncalves is still on Calgary.

Bob Chicoine @PoignardLeclerc11 would go onto play in 28 games with Calgary before being traded, in those 28 games Chicoine would produce only 6 points. In exchange for Chicoine Calgary would receive Brendan Telker @Telkster who would record 29 points in the final 44 games of his career, he would also produce 8 points in 7 playoff games with Calgary. Telker was not traded prior to his retirement.

The final piece Calgary received in the initial trade would be moved only a few days later to New York as they would trade the S84 HSK 2nd with their own S83 1st to move up to the 5th overall pick, where they would select AirRig GoodBrandSun @Rhynex Entertainment. To date GoodBrandSun has been a staple on Calgary’s blueline, with 361 points in 380 career games. GoodBrandSun would also win the S83 Jake Wylde Trophy as the league’s top defensive defensemen.

Now moving onto the Helsinki side of things where GM @Rayzor_7 went to work, we’ll get Nasherov @Vat out of the way quickly as he would play in 144 games with Helsinki prior to retiring. In those games Nasherov produced 152 points, 67 of which were goals.

Now onto the big part, as Erlantz Jokinen @jRuutu would be traded back to Calgary after 1 season in Helsinki where he produced 58 points. In exchange for Jokinen, a S84 1st (RIG), and S84 4th (HSK)  the Titans received two S85 2nds (LDN, and CGY), and Calgary’s S86 1st. Of those picks the only one that Helisinki used was the S85 CGY 2nd, where they selected Vinny Lecavlier @Spartakiller2, who is still a prospect in the Helsinki system.

The S85 LDN 2nd would be traded with a S84 3rd (RIG) in exchange for Reylynn Reinhart @Ricer13 who would play the final season of their career with Helsinki and would produce 46 goals and 41 assists for 87 points in 72 games. They would also have 10 points in 7 playoff games prior to retirement.

This is where things get interesting and complicated as Helsinki would trade the S86 CGY 1st, Deron Nesbitt @AW13, and their own S86 2nd to Davos in a massive 3-way trade where the Titans received 6 pieces; the S86 DAV 1st, S86 LDN 3rd, S86 NYA 4th, S87 CGY 3rd, S88 DAV 3rd, and S88 CGY 3rd. The S86 LDN 3rd, S86 NYA 4th, and S87 CGY 3rd were used to select Antonio Marchand @Tapirman, Suhayb Hussein @chief, and Niall Mahoney @LiamFlannigan respectively, all of which are still prospects in the Helsinki system.

The S88 CGY 3rd would be traded back to Calgary in exchange for Marcel Janser @Morcar80, who would appear in 22 games for Helsinki, producing 10 points. Janser would then be traded along with the S89 RIG 2nd to Vancouver for Ryuji Sakamoto @der meister who will make his Helsinki debut later today.

I’m going to put a bit of an asterisk next to this trade as the S88 DAV 3rd was not the main piece in it, as Helsinki would trade the 3rd, Tim Stuzle @NineIQ v2, S89 VAN 2nd, and S89 SEA 3rd to Malmo for Bob Vladivechsenkchushkin @Grape, Mo Probert @Yahtzee, and Matty Fire @MattyFired. Before playing in a single game for Helsinki Bob would be traded to Vancouver for a S90 VAN 2nd. Both Fire and Probert would play for Helsinki and record a combined 51 points in 44 games played so far this season.

Helsinki would also go onto trade the S86 DAV 1st they acquired in the Deron Nesbitt trade as it would be moved to Vancouver for Vancouver’s S86 1st and Toronto’s S86 2nd, both of which would be traded; The S86 VAN 1st would be traded to London along with 2 other draft picks for Rick Grimes @tinafrombobsburgers who has 49 points in 94 career games with Helsinki to date.

The S86 TOR 2nd would be bundled with another 2nd to move up in the S86 draft in a trade with Calgary as they would acquire the S86 WAR 1st, with this pick Helsinki would select Fuukka Rask @Jubis who has a 21-39-7 record and 0.912 SV% in 72 career games.

With most trades it’s very hard to declare a winner, but at the end of the day, Calgary acquired pieces that were integral to their S87 Continental Cup victory and has gotten a lot of games and production out of both Leandro Goncalves and AirRig GoodBrandSun. While this trade doesn’t initially show much of a return for Helsinki, eventually they did receive 5 players who are currently on their roster all of which have a very bright future.

Our local hockey exports have now already a quarter of the season behind them. Helsinki is still on top of their conference with a 15-6-1 while Calgary is barely clinging on to the wild card spot with a 8-10-2 record. On some ground breaking news we learned that Marcel has now been traded together with Riga's 2nd round pick in S89 to Vancouver in exchange for Ryuji Sakamoto. The young Japanese is also a defensive defenseman, albeit younger and with a higher talent ceiling, alas even less offensive tools as the veteran Swiss back. We just got a telex that Marcel had to rebook his flight from Vancouver to London as the English squad traded for him in exchange for defender Branden Skuin and Davos's 2nd round pick in S89. We will see how this trade chain pans out for any of the franchises involved.

Simo Ruotsalainen (SR) was able to reach Marcel (MJ) and get his side of the story of this unexpected turn of events.
SR: 'Marcel, thanks for your time. We have heard that you were traded first to Vancouver just to be flipped to London a few hours later. What do you think about this chain of events?'
MJ: 'Hyvää ilta päivää Simo. It is wild. The trade away from Calgary was not unexpected and it was cool to join Helsinki. Our season started very well and at the beginning I was able to score above my average. Then I hit something of a dry spell but was still able to help the team win matches. Sakamoto is certainly an upgrade on the defensive end of the ice, I am fully aware of that, alas this is also well reflected on their paycheck as well. When the GM Frank Funk called me in his office and broke the news, I was a bit surprised. At the end of the day that is just how this business works and there is not much one can do except to make the best of it and stay professional. If life gives you lemons, open up a bottle of Tequila, is what my dad always says.'
SR: 'Shortly after, you were traded back to Europe. Did you have to jump out of the plane?'
MJ (laughs): 'Luckily no. I was still packing in my apartment, when London's GM Jacob Carson, called me to tell me I should cancel my flight to Vancouver as I was just traded to them. It would have been bad for my carbon footprint, if I flew half across the planet for nought. It appears I bring some upgrade to their blueline and Skuin has been stagnant for a while now, while I still make some sort of progress in my development, even though being drafted earlier then the Finn.'
SR: 'Are you excited to dress for London now?'
MJ: 'It is a relatively young team with a lot of potential and I want to help them to make the playoffs this year. Besides I am sucker for history just like my brother and would like to re-visit the Imperial War Museum and the HMS Belfast as well as the Tower. I will finally have the time to go to the RAF Museum in Hendon and to the Tank Museum in Bovington which has the only Tiger tank in working condition. This will be a cool new experience.'
SR: 'Okay, that is all the questions I had for now, we will certainly follow your further career.'

Here are the stats for the Rotkreuz natives:
    Marcel: 22gp, 2g, 8a, 10pts, +12, 22 PIM, 27 hits, 39sb, 1gwg, 1 First star nomination
    Daniel: 20gp, 10g, 13a, 23pts, +2, 18 PIM, 40 hits, 19sb, 57.95FO%, 0gwg, 3ppg, 2 First star nominations

Well, I thought Helsinki would be competing for a spot in the playoffs but this hot start was even faster than expected. Helsinki is off to a 11-5-1 through 17 games, just two wins shy of our last seasons total wins and already a win beyond our last seasons ROW. There are week spots for us but all in all its going well since we're sitting middle of the pack at 8th on PK% and even better at 5th for PP%. The concerning part of that would be being third in the league in PIMS.
I'm proud of this team and the roster as we are charging up the standings and will be aiming for higher than a wildcard spot at this point. All our newly acquired players are playing great as Godlander, Fire and Probert are all in the top 5 for team points while our younger folks of Kardashian and Dixon also crack that. Super excited to see how these players stand up over the course of the season.

The S88 season is about to start, and this news outlet takes this opportunity to get a preseason interview with the younger Janser brother. As most of our valued readers know the Swiss defender is dressing now for Helsinki, another Original Eight franchise. Our Finnish correspondent Simo Routsalainen met up with the Rotkreuz native to catch up.

Simo Ruotsalainen (SR): 'Hi Marcel. Thanks for meeting up with us.'
Marcel Janser (MJ): 'Hyvää päivää, Simo. Excited to answer your questions.'
SR: 'Marcel, Calgary could not afford your services anymore and you entered FA this past offseason. You had several offers. What did make you declare for Helsinki?'
MJ: 'I am a big fan of Original Eight franchises and Helsinki has an interesting future ahead after a couple of rather underwhelming seasons. GM Frank Funk convinced me with his vision. On top of that I can provide some veteran presence to a young defence core and bring that cup experience into the mix.'
SR: 'Does that mean that we will see a more offensive version of the Calgary-Marcel?'
MJ (laughs): 'I do not think so. I am still a stay-at-home defender with limited offensive output. The points will come from the young talented prospects like Grimes, Dixon and Kardashian.'
SR: 'For the first time in your professional career you will be playing against your brother. Are you looking forward to these meet ups?'
MJ: 'I mean we played against each other during our time in Switzerland. I like to think that knowing him as well as I do can give me an edge. Dan needs to get creative playing against me, as I know most of his moves. So he will need to do new things, which can be a chance for our team, when he is not as proficient with the new tricks as with his proven ones. It will be interesting for both of us.'
SR: 'Will we see the Jansers dropping gloves against each other?'
MJ: 'Never say never. Alas, we were taught that brothers need to stick together. Of course we were also raised to give our all for our teams in every match. Contrary to what people may believe in view of the legendary line brawl against Seattle in game three of the conference finals, Dan and I are not big fighters. We acknowledge that it is part of the game and that there are times when you need to draw a line in the sand, but we prefer to focus on playing hockey.'
SR: 'You came to Finland on your father's yacht together with Dan, Bonnie, Callum and your sister Nicole. How was the passage? Did Callum get seasick?'
MJ: 'Not at all. Not even when we hit some rough patches mid-Atlantic. He sleeps as good as can expected from a newborn.'
SR: 'How about your new home? Have you found an accommodation in Helsinki yet?'
MJ: 'Yeah I found a flat in the vicinity of the Hartwall Arena where we will be playing our home games. It is nothing fancy, but I am a simple guy with simple tastes, so flat hunting was not that difficult. Especially not with the help of the Titans' HR department, who assisted my with translating and all the paper work.'
SR: 'Okay that's it from my side. Good luck in your new club and welcome to Finland.'
MJ: 'Appreciate it Simo and thanks for having me, hyvästi'

We will revert with news from our intrepid heroes in due course. Stay tuned.

The Helsinki Titans have distinctly changed their direction after last seasons near historic tanking in an attempt to get first overall in the draft. The team has called up rookie defenceman Kronchy Kardashian as well as resigned its three core pieces to long term contracts as Daryl Dixon, Rick Grimes and Fuukka Rask all five year deals and were recently announced as the captaincy crew for the upcoming season.
The Titans look to build on this strong youth core with newly acquired Titans such as Nils Godlander, Matty Fire, Marcel Janser, Jack The Ripper and Mo Probert. They strengthened the prospect pool for the future as well, taking Owen Lazaro with the 9th overall pick and Legacy Gaming with the 12th overall pick in the first round. Look for this pair to be pushing for roster spots in the upcoming seasons to plug the forward gaps as the old guard head to their retirement homes.
