Wow another game where we outshoot the opponent like crazy. 56 shots. Also, that was such a random hat-trick from a 30 TPE D-man, who is inactive.

We return now to A Draft In Review.  This week, we focus on the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM, and we review their most recent draft for the S58 Season.

1 (1) - With the first pick in the draft, the Aces took Goalie Marcel St. Laurent @Frank.  Marcel has reflexes like a cat and is known for giving up next to no rebounds.  Hockey experts say that great teams are built from the net out, and the Ace's have a foundation of steel with St.Laurent minding the twine this year.

1 (4) - The Aces second selection was the fourth pick of the draft, Defenseman Brandon Hood @philthethrill81.  Hood is a great shut down defenseman.  He plays angles like he's shooting pool, and he's quick on his skates for a player of his size.  He makes a great first pass and will be the anchor on the Ace's blue line this year.

2 (6) - With the first pick of the second round, the Aces took Ebi Shpeen @.sniffuM.  Ebi is a tough player who loves to bang the body and create space on the ice.  Ebi throws his body the way shutdown defenseman do, and is immovable from in front of the net.  He will center the Aces top line this year.

2 (9) - With the ninth overall pick in the draft, Vegas surprised a few people and took winger Evan R. Lawson @diamond_ace.  A late comer to the draft, some expected the power forward to fall into the next round.  The Aces however, saw a fit in their rough and tumble scheme for the winger.  His size and fearlessness in the corner and in front of the net, mixed with some nice hands, has scouts harkening back to Corey Perry, though they also comment that Lawson's personality is much kinder than the aforementioned Duck.

2 (10) - This pick originally belonged to the Aces, but because of a rule in the VHLM they were forced to trade the pick, or risk losing it for nothing.  The Aces GM Spade, turned this pick into Ottawa's 3rd round pick next year.

3 (11) - With the first pick in the the third round, the Aces took scoring winger Gary Goose @fruitcake.  GM Spade was quoted as being "shocked and relieved" that the future sniper was still available at the beginning of the third round.  Goose will be the offensive brunt of the Ace's playing on the top line opposite of Lawson.

3 (14) - The Aces last pick in the draft was spent on Finnish defenseman Joona Makela @JoonaIceman.  A well rounded defenseman, Makela has the ability to chip in offensively, while also holding his own quite well in his own end.  Makela has been absent from practice recently, but GM Spade still has high hopes for his defenseman and has paired him opposite of Hood on the top pairing.

    Hello everyone,

Thank you to all for your patience and hard work over the last off-season as we made significant changes to the VHL. So far I'm very happy with the way these changes have shaped up and I think S58 is going to be exciting. However, the off-season was obviously a long one as we had to take extra time to implement these changes and that is often boring/frustrating for some.

I mentioned in my previous announcements that we are hoping for S58 to be a big season for the VHL as we make changes and start investing heavily in recruitment. Now that the ball is rolling on S58, we wanted to give everyone a little bonus to kick things off (and as an apology for the long off-season).

Therefore, anyone can claim a doubles week either this PT week or next week. Welfare doesn't qualify for doubles weeks - it has to be a point task.

This will certainly not replace our annual Christmas giveaways so stay tuned for more TPE opportunities!

Alright, so below is how I see our lines starting out.

    LW-C-RW
    Evan R. Lawson @diamond_ace - Ebi Shpeen @.sniffuM - Gary Goose @fruitcake
Mikka Toivonen - Mike Szatkowski III - Joseph Lenin

    D Pairings
    Brandon Hood @philthethrill81 - Joona Mäkelä @JoonaIceman
    Charles Cote - Mr. Shakedown

    G
    Marcel St-Laurent @Frank

I only keep the inactives in in case we need to mix lines up a little. but you guys will get the prime share of ice time.  I'm expecting you guys to put up some big numbers this year with plenty of ice time and a brick wall in net.

I'll do my part with trying to bring in some extra talent to share the burden.  If you guys focus on doing your task points and bigging up the team to help me attract free agents, we'll be partying on the strip come playoff time.

I'm looking forward to a great season together guys!

    Go Aces!

There was an interesting last minute addition to the VHLM draft, as Evan R. Lawson, CFO of Hank Med and administrator at Hamptons Heritage Hospital stepped down from both positions in an attempt to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing hockey. After years of being financially successful in both positions, he will be able to self-fund his career and not need a great deal of contract money. Financial control of Hank Med was given over to a 50-50 partnership between his brother, Hank Lawson, and Boris Kuester von Jurgens-Ratenicz, a wealthy benefactor who has helped Hank Med and the Lawsons out of some tight spots. Hamptons Heritage was given back to former administrator Jill Casey. Evan has had no experience at the sport of hockey but has been interested from a fan's perspective ever since he was a kid, and so with his finances being what they are, he's hired Jaromir Jagr to teach him the sport in the offseason in exchange for a nice paycheck. For his first VHLM season, Evan will be playing for the Las Vegas Aces, having been selected 9th in the VHLM draft.

Make the second round of the draft purely off standings - Playoffs and lotto should have no impact on the second round of the draft just like real life. Worst to best picks in order, especially now with no conferences.

Make more team related TPE tasks - TPE is down as a whole in the league with zero players over 1,000 and only one player even close to that. TPE average is around 350 which is pathetic.

Start giving out uncapped TPE to do some jobs that aren't getting done - Player store sheet update for 5 TPE uncapped, Do a HOF article 5 TPE uncapped. Any job that isn't getting done throw some uncapped at it. It's more important that all jobs get done than it is to have the league looking half ass done. And I'm getting sick of doing multiple jobs for free, lol

Make welfare like the other two big leagues - Give out points for PT's posted in other leagues, maybe not the six TPE the other leagues do but at least do 4 or 5. I don't know how many people this would bring to the league. Multiple EFL people told me they would be here if this was implemented but they don't have time for another 2 PT's a week.

2 player system - I know the two player system is gone, it seems that GMs can still make 2 players. Make it that both GM players go to their team, it gives the GM something to work with and gives them incentive to make the team good quickly or his players careers suffer

Change 590's to 2 TPE, for the amount of work they are that would be fair pay

    S58 VHLM Dispersal Mock Draft

    Round One:

    1st Overall - Las Vegas Aces: G – Marcel St-Laurent - @Frank
The first person I have off the board is @Frank. Being an experienced member with plenty of successful players, and the current VHLM commissioner, Frank’s got the reputation, and fits a positional need. Las Vegas can’t afford to wait and go for someone else, as Yukon is also in need of a netminder, and there is no better then St-Laurent.

    2nd Overall – Yukon Rush: C – The Charm - @Tyler
Another pick that is probably fairly obvious here, as @Tyler has had a couple of successful players, and is currently a VHL GM, making him a great selection. He also plays a valuable position as one of only four centers in this class, providing reason to take him sooner rather than later.

    3rd Overall – Yukon Rush: D - Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette - @FacePuncher
After taking a forward, I see Yukon selecting one of the only three defenders in this class. Seeing as though they don’t make another selection for another three picks, it’s too risky to not take a defender. @FacePuncher is coming off a successful career with a forward, so it should be interesting to see how he does with a defensemen, but seeing as though he is a very active member on the boards, and already has thirty TPE on the other defensemen, I expect him to be the first one off the board.

    4th Overall – Las Vegas Aces: D – Brandon Hood - @philthethrill81
I would not claim to be the fourth most valuable player in this draft, but simply based on the fact that just two defensemen will remain, I can’t see the Aces passing up on the last active one. Hood’s agent is returning from some time away from the victory hockey league, and seems to be as eager as ever to get going.

    5th Overall – Oslo Storm: C – Ebi Shpeen - @.sniffuM
Another center off the board at number five is Shpeen. Coming from an agent who has seen his fair share of success in the VHL, it should serve as no surprise to see Shpeen this high, and similar to Charm, he fills a valuable position, giving Oslo a bright future down the middle.

    Round Two:

    6th Overall - Las Vegas Aces: LW – Tigertank Williams - @Gooningitup
While it may seem quite odd to have someone of @Gooningitup’s reputation falling to the second round, with his reputation comes the idea of a “goon” per say, rather then a point producer or a shut-down defender. Still, being a proven active member, and the best forward available, I can’t see him dropping any further.

    7th Overall - Yukon Rush: C – Elias Sobeck - @Boragina
Sobeck is an interesting prospect. I’m not quite sure why he is being drafted into the VHLM, when he has already been drafted to the VHL (maybe he was a waiver claim, and thus his VHLM right don’t belong to any particular team), but regardless, @Boragina has been a great member here for a long-time, and the duo of Charm-Sobeck up the middle will be the best center core the team has put together in quite some time.

    8th Overall - Yukon Rush: RW – Yandall Beast - @Harry F'n Hans
Ahh, the new blood. @Harry F'n Hans seems to be eager to get his first VHL players career started, and his work ethic has shown that he will be able to compete with the best of em’. I would have him higher, as he certainly has the potential, but it’s only been a couple weeks, which is nothing compared to the previously mentioned members, and thus, I see him falling to the Rush at 8th overall.

    9th Overall - Las Vegas Aces: RW – Kevin Right - @RadulovsFirstBeer
Another first-gen player is that of Kevin Right, who looks to be very promising. Much like Beast, he has tons of potential, as proved by his work ethic early on. Although, he is behind Beast in TPE at the moment, and if it weren’t for the Aces having back-to-back-to-back picks here, allowing them to also take a center, I would have him below Tribuncovs. But, nonetheless I have the Aces taking him with their 9th selection.

    10th Overall – Las Vegas Aces: C - Varis Tribuncovs - @bukss_a
I see the Aces going with the last center available, in Trubuncovs. The Aces are yet to select a center in this draft, and this sets them up with a potential first line of Williams – Tribuncovs – Right, which could be deadly in the future. Tribuncovs is a bit lower then other experienced members due to an unsuccessful career with his former player, and that provides reason to believe some first-generation players may also have more potential. Still, @bukss_a has been an active member thus far, and I hope he sticks around this time.

    Round Three:

    11th Overall – Las Vegas Aces: LW – Theo Karlsson - @Daniel
Opening up round three we have Theo Karlsson. Now, this is an interesting prospect to me, simply because I could not find much history on @Daniel’s previous clients, and thus, I cannot say with certainty that he is any more dependable then @bukss_a, let alone one of the top guys in @Tyler, or @Gooningitup. There is also the fact that he is a winger, which are of abundance in this class.

    12th Overall – Yukon Rush: G – Elfon Ashelf - @cosbornballboy
Having seen the majority of the active players selected, @cosbornballboy seems to be the Rush’s best bet here. While he may not exactly be considered inactive, having logged on in the last 24 hours, he hasn’t done anything to push himself above any of the other draftees. Nonetheless, the Rush need a goalie, so why not take a chance on @cosbornballboy.

    13th Overall – Yukon Rush: G – Sir Galahad - @Arthur
Practically the same situation here. If @cosbornballboy doesn’t work out, hopefully @Arthur does.

    14th Overall – Las Vegas Aces: LW – Dustin Evans - @AsylumParty
Another guy who has logged on recently, but hasn’t done much of anything since creating his player. Hopefully being drafted helps bring his activity up.

    15th Overall – Oslo Storm: D – Joona Makela - @JoonaIceman
Seems to have gone inactive, much like the others left at this point. I figure the defensemen is more valuable, so they would go with Makela here.

    Honorable mentions:
    RW – Gary Goose - @fruitcake
    RW – Brad Samford - @TheWhite44Mamba
The final two draft eligible prospects could very well be selected by a team in the fourth round, but not much to say with them being inactive.

Well, this is how I picture the S58 VHLM Dispersal draft going. I am by no means an expertise here, so I could be completely wrong, but I believe my selections make sense. I have no idea if personal relationships exist between VHLM GM’s and some of the draft eligible players, which could play a factor, as well as who may get send down for another season in the VHLM, but either way, I hope you can still view this for what it is, and enjoy it.

Call me a hypocrite because I can't think of any ideas outside of ones in other leagues, but one thing I have always found frustrating with this league is the lack of opportunities to earn TPE. From what I can tell the only weekly opportunities are:
Media/Graphic/Podcast/Welfare VHL.com Article/Podcast Job Pay And the VHLM practice facility is offered to VHLM players as well.

There isn't enough variety. You have 3 tasks to do each week, potentially just 1, if you don't have a job, or got advanced pay from an article or graphic. While I like the concept of being able to write one giant article for 4 weeks pay, that just decreases activity even more. If we had more activity here, I would be all for it, but I really don't think we can afford to allow people to write one article a month, for full points. I have no idea how many people exercise this option, but if just 5 people do, that is 5 articles in one month, rather then 20, must they produce one each week.

Another problem with the lack of variety comes with no way to earn max points in a given week, for some members (specifically newer members). If you don't have a job, which I'm sure is a decent amount of the members here (again, having just come back, I have no idea how many), it is impossible to earn 9/9 capped TPE. IF you do a PT for 6, and a podcast for 2, that gives you 8 capped TPE. Not to mention the fact that a lot of people don't like to record themselves, and as such, will avoid doing podcasts. Thus, you have members without a job getting a max of 7/8 capped TPE.

I think adding a couple more weekly tasks that give you 1-2 capped TPE, could generate a lot more activity, as everyone will be able to earn the max of 9 capped TPE in any given week. People that claim welfare (whether it is 2, 3, or 4), will also be able to make more in a week, and I've noticed we have nearly 20 members on welfare. Maybe if those members on welfare could do a couple more smaller tasks each week, they would get more engaged in the site.

We need more tasks that give the people something to do. Having potentially just one task (which is either a 150 word article, or a short podcast), isn't enough to make people want to check in everyday.

This is a bit of a mess, and it might have been brought up before, but again, I just got back, so sue me.
