Ramicus reacted to Ramicus in The Wise Words of Merica
I have spoken to a great many people on this site. There are some with whom I have spoken many times, while others have been one time occasions. One person with whom I particularly enjoy conversing is Merica. We have a grand time. He's pretty cool, and very patriotic. I will now share some words of wisdom given to me just for this little article.

Merica did things a little differently, giving me a little essay instead of tidbits. I'll give you the essay, then comment at the end.

“My advice to someone entering the real world, or adulthood, whichever term you prefer, is to never become complacent, set your goals and strive to achieve them, never quit, because if you quit once you will do it again, and again and again, it is not a path you want to go down, because it’s a hard mindset to get out of. Surround yourself with people who will be honest with you, friends who will tell you the truth and won’t lie to you because they don’t want to hurt your feelings.

Always be aware, never allow yourself to fall into the all too current fad of ignorance, because ignorance is the farthest thing from bliss and it isn’t an excuse to mess up, contrary to popular opinion. Be open to new things, because there is always something new to learn or discover, but don’t just take someone’s word for it, educate yourself, guard your mind, and don’t allow it to become polluted.

Now, you might be thinking,”this guy is painting the world as a terrible place”, and that isn’t my intention…The world is full of amazing people and amazing things, but if there is one thing you take out of all of this, it’s that evil exists, and even though everyone wants to say ”oh, it’ll never happen to me”, remember that the people that it does happen to said the exact same thing. There will be plenty of people in your life who want to ignore what is going on around them, but I’ll never be that person. Enjoy life, but don’t be ignorant and remember the person sitting next too could be the next story on CNN because he shot up a local school, or the guy in front of you at the grocery store could be a rapist stalking his next victim.

I’ll end this on a good note: once you discover what it is that you love to do, the one thing that you wake up every morning wishing you could do, go after it. Don’t spend your life wishing and dreaming.”

As I'm interpreting it, Merica is telling us to maintain a balance in the way we live. Live life to its fullest, and never settle for whet you don't want. On the other hand, we need to keep our wits about us, because the guy next to you on the 4 train might be a future school shooter. But I believe what he says at the beginning and the end is most important. Everyone has their dream, and most people go through life without ever reaching their goal. If I may quote Arthur O'Shaughnessy, an English poet (and herpetologist, according to his Wikipedia page that I checked for his name's spelling), “One man with a dream, at pleasure, Shall go forth and conquer a crown.”

I have spoken to a great many people on this site. There are some with whom I have spoken many times, while others have been one time occasions. One person with whom I particularly enjoy conversing is Mook. We have a grand time. He's pretty cool, and very patriotic. I will now share some words of wisdom given to me just for this little article.

“Start working out as soon as possible. Ladies love a man who would do damage if they choose to beat them” This is a strange thing to say, I think. I definitely understand the sentiment, though, especially as an overweight man. Definitely good advice, but I'll give a quick PSA: DON'T BEAT WOMEN. YOU WILL BE ARRESTED.
“Don't ever stop playing hockey, if you don't play hockey, start.” I don't play hockey. I never have. Well, I played goalie in camp one summer, but that was street hockey. I know Mook, though, and I think he's saying to find something active that you really enjoy, which in his case is hockey, and to not stop just because you get old and have more responsibilities.
“Get your body accustomed to getting 6-8 hours of sleep. When you go to get a job, depending on 10 hours of sleep is just going to suck for you.” When I read the beginning, I was expecting the end to be about getting a proper amount of sleep. I was very mistaken. I think I'm good on this front, though. I get five to six hours a night during the week.
“Don't get married at 20, even if you know she is the one for you, give it till after university.” I trust Mooky because he's got some experience here, but I don't quite see the reason for this. In the words of so many people, there's no time like the present.
“Once you are out of high school, avoid high school drama.” Even when you're in high school, high school drama absolutely sucks. I can't imaging why anyone would want to be involved in it much past that.
“Don't rush life, you'll just miss it quicker.” Implying that we miss it no matter what? It certainly sounds good, though. Take some time to smell the sawdust (I've always liked the smell of sawdust). This actually seems to be a common message in these things.

I have spoken to a great many people on this site. There are some with whom I have spoken many times, while others have been one time occasions. One person with whom I haven't really spoken all that much is Flyersfan1493, also known as something Gow. Nevertheless, he's a pretty cool guy, and the conversations we have had are always entertaining. I will now share some words of wisdom given to me just for this little article.

“Know how to tie a tie.” Luckily for me, I wear a tie almost every week. Nevertheless, I know plenty of poeople my age who still wear clip-on ties. It's a scary thought.

“Learn your limit for drinking alcohol.” Given the professions that are present on the site (Hi, Kendrick), I feel that I should remind everyone that drinking before the proper age as established by your state, province, or nation is bad. I would also remind everyone that if you're going to drink, drink responsibly. Don't pass out in the hallway or anything like that.

“You may be able to BS your way through high school and college, but employers can see right through the BS.” No comment is necessary, but I'm going to give one anyway. Learn to work when it's easy so that you're accustomed to it by the time it's more difficult.

I have spoken to a great many people on this site. There are some with whom I have spoken many times, while others have been one time occasions. One person with whom I talk all the time is Bojo. We talk through VHL occasionally, and we are also in a very well-known kik chat together. He's a pretty cool guy. I will now share some words of wisdom given to me just for this little article.

“If you're going to college, don\'t worry about going to the "wrong one". It's about the people you'll meet.” Bojo clearly needs to become a college guidance counselor. People are having nervous breakdowns in my school. It's sort of ridiculous. Perhaps if everyone calmed down, everything would be better.
“Sometimes you have to work a crappy job before you can reach a better one.” A comment isn't necessary, but still must be provided. People think that they're going to go to college, and then come out and get the job of their dreams. Bojo's saying that this isn't necessarily the case.
“Bills are a thing. Research before you invest. Don't go buying the latest iPhone without a solid plan.” People do this a lot. They see the newest thing and immediately need it. In addition to the last bit, I think the final four words aren't necessary to make a good point. There are people who have owned every iPhone since the first. It's more than a little bit ridiculous.
“The world doesn't owe you anything. Only you can make your own life better.” Amen. I don't like these entitled wusses I have around me.

I will leave Bojo's final words here as a conclusion, with no explanation. “Things like hard break ups, deaths, and other sad things can make you lose faith in yourself. The recovery time is going to suck, but it will get better.”

Kendrick you can't just quit because one person says his player's going to suck and he thinks he doesn't deserve to go top 10 or whatever. Your draft board has been pretty damn good.  A couple misses IMO, but that shit happens.

When we left off, George “The General” Patton was in Havana, Cuba. He had previously been in Cancun, Mexico, but that had only been a layover for a few hours on the way to Havana. Before that, he had been in an undisclosed North American city, where he had been in a really cool rental car but unable to use it. Before that, he had been in Paris, where he had yelled at people from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

What was The General doing in Havana, Cuba? Not much at all. He had a small apartment, and a large room in the back of a tall building. He had Cherry Baxter, but she was at the beach most of the time. Apparently Playas del Este (Beaches of the East, for those of you who do not speak the local language of most of the world at this point) was nice most times of the year, even if it was packed with people who weren't Americans (because we all know that proud Americans don't associate with damn commies (and before you get on my case about that one, The General is German and Cherry Baxter is from Australia)). She spent her days swimming and he spent his days training. There would be plenty of time for swimming at the beaches of the Carribean when the evil organization known as HYDRA was vanquished, right?

One particular day, George “The General” Patton had allowed himself to sleep in. It was raining, which meant that unnecessary hot sidekick Cherry Baxter was still asleep (beaches really aren't so much fun in the rain). The rain put him in the mood for food, so he ate a bowl of a cereal known as Unique {letter next to L on the keyboard} (copyright laws are destroying the world of George “The General” Patton, aren't they?). Then he ate a second, being hungry. Then he stopped eating and began the long and arduous journey to the little door on the side of the building that was taller than almost everything in Havana.

The door was harder to open today, which struck George “The General” Patton as slightly odd. Luckily for the readers, The General was an idiot, and so forced it open. Just a few inches in, a cement wall had replaced the large room of exercise. Further investigation showed a small matchbox taped to the wall. Below it was a small note.

“The fire is lit, Mr. Patton.”
It was not in Mr. Corey Wayne's now-familiar handwriting. The General was very confused. What was going on?

That was the last thing that went through his head before a burlap sack was forced over it, and he was thrown into the back of a truck.

    Come back next week for…

Ken Anderson has finally returned to Rush practice after a string of deaths in his family occurred over the holidays. Anderson was given a bereavement leave by the Yukon Rush after these tragedies and although he was still able to attend games, Ken was not an active member of the Rush’s practices until today. The young defenseman out of Edmonton, Alberta looked good in practice today, as he showed off the great skating which he is quickly becoming known for. The Yukon Rush hosted a light-hearted practice today and scrimmaged for the majority of their ice-time. Ken Anderson was able to grab an assist in Team Yellow’s 3-1 victory over Team Red.

The young VHL hopeful has had an unpredictable start to his career and scouts are split when trying to project his VHL future. The VHL Scouting Center has stated in their draft coverage that they expect Ken Anderson to be no more than a depth defenseman when push comes to shove. The head scout of the Quebec Meute, Jean Jacques, has also gone on record to say that even though Anderson has missed a substantial amount of practice time due to these tragedies in his life, he is a generational talent that should not be overlooked during this year’s draft. We reached out to Ken Anderson after practice today to get his thoughts on the situation.

“It doesn’t bother me too much when people are saying that I’m only going to be a depth defenseman in the VHL because I know they are wrong. On the other hand, if someone were to come out with a scouting report that said I should go first overall in the draft, I wouldn’t be giving that much thought either because no matter what the scouts say, it’s very important to not let any of it get to your head.” Ken explained, “On draft day, the general manager’s will draft whoever they please and once the season starts and it’s time to hit the ice, the order of the draft becomes a moot point and it becomes all about who has the guts and the determination to make it.”

Ken Anderson answered questions for the media after practice today

Ken Anderson has been a pleasant surprise in his VHLM appearances thus far, scoring six goals and dishing 43 assists out to the tune of 49 points in only 41 games. Along with his very respectable point numbers as a defenseman, Anderson has a respectable +28 plus/minus and leads the team with 85 penalty minutes, which shows that he indeed does have the grit that most scouts thought he was lacking to play in this league.

Ready to put his weeks of sadness, crying, and funerals behind him, Ken Anderson is happy to be back practicing and playing the game that he loves. His teammates have welcomed him back with open arms and with over half the VHLM season in the books already, Ken Anderson will be looking toward improving the strength of this already strong Rush lineup. When asked about his future ambitions now that he is back as an active member of the team, Ken only had one thing to say: “Win the Championship”.
