Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg We had the opportunity to meet up with Kris Rice (KR) and Daniel Janser (DJ), GM of the Calgary Wranglers, in the Saddledome's sports bar. Jean-Luc Lieuxperroux (JLL) was conducting the interview. JLL: 'Kris, in the S81 draft you decided to go for Daniel in the first round and then also picked Marcel in the second round. Would you say you made the right choices on this far away draft day?' KR: 'Absolutely. Dan is a valuable player and this season specifically he is nothing short of spectacular. He was not elected captain for nothing and he brings a lot to the table. He has a defensive conscience, he makes his hands dirty with the bodywork and he is one of the best in the league from the hashmark. Marcel is a solid depth player, who knows when goals are needed. He sacrifices his body every night, but without taking too many penalties. In fact, 4 penalty minutes in 38 games for a stay-at-home defender is very good indeed. He may have not developed on the same pace as his brother, but there are players picked in the first round who have not made the VHL yet and players picked ahead of him who have already retired.' JLL: 'Was Daniel high on the shopping list in S81 or were there other candidates?' KR: 'Well, one has always alternatives on draft day in case your preferred player is already picked once it is your turn. However, when it was on us to make a pick and we realized that Daniel was still on the board, there was no hesitation.' JLL: 'What about Marcel's election? Was this to appease Daniel or was it a genuine positional need?' KR: 'Well, once Daniel had taken the photos and all the usual procedures on draft day, we of course had a chat with him, whether he would prefer to continue to play with his brother. He was all professional and said, that we should draft in the interest of the organisation and if we see value in Marcel he would of course not mind to continue his career alongside him. But he made clear that they both understood that in a draft system it can well be that siblings do not end up in the same team. In hindsight everything turned out well and Marcel made it to the big show. He is a little more introverted than his brother, but they share the same values, attitude and work ethics. It is also interesting to see, how they complement each other on the ice. Marcel with his willingness to eat pucks (which is the only thing Daniel is hesitant to do) and Dan's boneshattering checks. We call them Hammer and Anvil.' JLL: 'Daniel is according to VSN a viable candidate for some of the most prestigious awards in the VHL. Is this something you expected to happen?' KR: 'If you look at the dedication Daniel shows in every training session, his willingness to go the extra mile and his talent, one cannot be surprised that this will be recognized by his peers and that in the end it will show on the scoreboard. I always thought he has what it takes to be one of the best two-way forwards in the league. But that his scoring explodes like it does this season so far and make him a contender for the scoring title, that is a surprise even to us, who work with him on a daily basis. The most remarkable thing is though, that he does not even try to win individual hardware. All that counts to him is the cup, and if his efforts to help the team achieving this goal, brings him silverware, he will take it.' JLL: 'Daniel, you are a veteran for the Wranglers now and in a long term contract with the organization that selected you. What could you tell us about Calgary in general and its management specifically?' DJ: 'Calgary is a highly professional and ambitious organization. One can feel that it is rich on history. The fans are amazing and support us on and off the ice no matter what. I felt welcome from day one, and even during my time in Europe, I was checking in with the results, and could not wait to dress for the Red, White and Black.' JLL: 'So would you say that the Wranglers are a good spot for young aspiring talents?' DJ: 'One hundred percent. The staff is helping you with your play and your development. That expands on non-hockey related issues like English courses for import players, getting you in touch with trustworthy real estate agencies or helping you get the driving licence. The Wranglers aspire for the cup, yes. But they do it in a way to make it fun to get there. The message is: 'Just because we want to win, does not mean we cannot have fun in the process'. They rather pick a stretch in the draft, because they fit in the locker room than electing a future super star with a diva attitude. Justice and Strasmore for example were not the most talented players available at the pick they were drafted, but the management knew that they fit into our locker room.' JLL: 'Would you say that this is one of the reasons Calgary has made the playoffs the past three seasons?' DJ: 'Without a doubt. See if you are friends or almost brothers (well in Marcel's case I suppose there is no 'almost'), you are more willing to do what it takes to win. You make the extra check, you expose yourself to the not-so-gentle treatment in the slot, you take the extra stride to be first on the puck to prevent a turnover. And sometimes you even block a shot with your body (Dan winks and smiles, well knowing that blocking shots is not his forte). It helps that Kris has played for this organization on a competitive level. That makes him very credible and you listen if he gives you tips, how you could do better next time. He is a hands-on GM and takes pride in paying attention to every detail.' 1. I think we are more or less where I expected us to be, among the top dogs of the NA conference. 2. Leandro has certainly taken a leap compared to last year and Marcel's +/- rating is astounding for a low TPE rookie. 3. I would not have thought that Helsinki with all this off-season drama would be as competitive as they are right now. 4. My player is doing alright (still cannot believe that I was behind my brother in GWG for a while though) 5. No, I expected a decent season along the lines I had previously. This comes as much as a surprise as to anyone else (I have not even drafted myself in the VHFL). 6. I am curious what will happen with all the cap issues (last time I checked most of the league were above cap and those who weren't did not have a full squad) and if Colorado can repeat.

Hence, it should be know surprise that the Calgary team rode into to sunset with two additional points in their saddlebag after a convincing 4-2 victory. It was GoodBrandSun who opened the score halfway through the first. Daniel then increased the lead by one with less than three minutes to go. Gonçalves hoovers up Dan's blocked shot and has a go himself. Unfortunately for the Portuguese forward his shot is not on target. However, Jokinen picks up the ophaned disc and attempts to score but sees his shot blocked by Tavau. Daniel has sneaked into the slot and reacts first to acquire the puck. As there is not much room left, he resorts to an in between-the-legs shot to give the biscuit enough elevation to beat Davis. Janser also scored the only goal in the second period, when Gonçalves re-gained the puck which was previously lost by Tessier. Again his shot misses the net, but Strasmore keeps the Wranglers in possession. Living by the doctrine, that you miss every shot you do not take, Phil gives it a swing. Alas, he sees his shot blocked by Teekirque. Daniel is again the opportunist to profit from the chaos in front of the net and buries it backhand. It takes Gonçalves a full six seconds to score in the third period to make it 4-0. Davos pulled two goals back, but it was too little, too late. Janser (2g/1a), Gonçalves (1g/2a) and Dahl (35 saves) were named three stars of the match. Even though the Wranglers' young keeper was denied a shutout his .946 saving rate were head and shoulder above Davis' performance (.882). Calgary's power play was anemic (0/2) and the penalty kill was spotless (4/4). Marcel was credited with 0g, 0a, +1, 5 hits and 5sb Daniel had 2g, 1a, +1, 1 hit and 70.00FO% to his name 2-0 Dahl was not deprived long of his well deserved shutout though. Already in the next game against Toronto he was able to pull it off, when the Wranglers beat the Legion 2-0. Marcel receives Dahl's pass after a puck dump by Toronto and fires the after burner. He scores on the rush with a slapshot from mid-distance at 16:51 minutes into the first. The second period came and went with neither team able to score. Wolanin then choked any hope the Legion may have had with his marker halfway through the third. The three stars went to Dahl (16 saves), Marcel Janser (1g/0a) and Kotkakoivu (0g/1a). Dahl (1.000) obviously had the upperhand over Lindbergh (.944) who stood on his head to give his team a fighting chance. The Wranglers' power play was disappointing (0/6) but the penalty kill immaculate (3/3). He is AirRig's defensive life line and shows decent production for defensive minded rookie defender. The Wranglers are fourth in the NA Conference but have still two games in hand compared to the Bears and the Wolves, which have a three and two points lead respectively. Two games have been played since we last reported from our hockey exports. Here are our summaries. 6-2 In this NA conference clash, the Calgary Wranglers got properly thrashed and stuffed by the Vancouver Wolves in a 6-2 defeat. Calgary opened the score in the person of GoodBrandSun, but the lead was shortlived as Vancouver tied the game less than a minute later. The middle period broke the Wranglers' neck when Vancouver scored three consecutive goals, before Jokinen could contain the damage. However, Vancouver reinstated the three goal lead before the second intermission. In the final period the Wolves converted a penalty for the final score of 6-2. Cheese (2g/1a), Pearce (2g/2a) and Eagles (1g/1a) were awarded the three stars of the night. Dahl (.906) had a decent match but Fuhr (.957) proved to be the better man in this encounter. The Wranglers' powerplay was lacking (0/3) and the penalty kill was decent (5/6). Marcel left the ice with 0g, 0a and -1 Daniel was noted with 0g, 1a, -2, 3 hits and 50.85FO% 1-4 Duelling a further competitor for the top spot in North America, the Wranglers defeated the Bears in a 4-1 win. GoodBrandSun and Marcel converted a penalty each. Tessier won the face off in the neutral zone and passed the puck to Wolanin who gives the disc to Janser, who is about to enter the Bear's den. The Swiss defender passes back to the blue line to Tessier, the center brings the puck back to Janser who takes a onetimer. The shot goes bar down and in. Or does it? The referees review the play and decide that the puck crossed the line in its full diameter, despite Wilson's best efforts. We have a good goal. Kotkakoivu scores the third goal for Calgary on even strength. The second period sees one goal a piece with Gonçalves taking advantage of a power play again. No goals were scored in the third period. The three stars were given to Kotkakoivu (1g/1a), Dahl (36 saves) and GoodBrandSun (1g/1a). Dahl (.973) was exceptional in this match and dominated Wilson (.911) in net. Calgary's power play (3/5) proved to be a weapon of mass destruction in their arsenal whereas the penalty kill was okay-ish (3/4). Marcel was reported with 1g, 0a, +1, 2 PIM (Tripping, no effect on the score) and 5sb Daniel had 0g, 1a, +0, 3 hits, 1sb and 55.81FO% to his name. JLL: 'Hi Daniel, almost half of the season is played in the VHL and the Wranglers stand at third seed in the NA conference trailing the Bears and the Dragons. As the league's top scorer, one could argue that this good position is held by Calgary to no small part thanks to you.' DJ: 'Hi Jean-Luc, good to see you. And one would be wrong. See, I won't deny that it feels good to be, at least temporarily, at the top of the scoring table. But wins, or losses for that matter, are always a team effort. I try to stand up to my responsibility as a member of the leadership group and lead by example, rather than words. So far it seems to work. A big thank goes to my alternates AirRig and Saku, who are also exemplary in their attitude as well as their performance. Luc, Saku and I are competing for the team leader in scoring and AirRig is amongst the topscoring defenders in the VHL. Our younger players are not slacking either and make big strides in their development. Leandro is not for nothing a fix starter in the top line and Landon is providing crucial secondary scoring in Saku's formation. Our rookies in the defence Marcel and Strasmore make little to no big errors and are supported by veteran Jokinen who keeps them in check if they are getting too cocky. And we can rely every night on Dahl and Gaming to do their job and to give us a fighting chance.' JLL: 'You passed GM Kris Rice's scoring total for the Wranglers franchise. Is this a topic which comes up in the locker room?' DJ: 'Shush. Kris is Kross at me for making a remark or two, when I noticed it, so please do not mention it again. It is nice to be named among the Calgary greats, but I think I have still a lot to prove to be considered one of them.' JLL: 'Winning a Continental Cup for example?' DJ: 'That would certainly tilt the chances in my favour for sure.' JLL: 'You are on track to a new record season and seem to be a viable candidate for the Boulet trophy this season. What are your thoughts?' DJ: 'It certainly is an honour to be considered one of the best in your trade, I am not going to even try to pretend otherwise. It would be cool to bring home some silverware. This is not that important to me though, it is more the love for the sport and the support from our amazing fans that I feel every time when I enter the rink in the Saddledome.' JLL: 'Speaking of love. You have been seen lately with a stunning red head. Is there anything you want to share with us?' DJ (laughing): 'Well, I suppose there is no hiding from you eagle-eyed press member. Yes, I am in love and it is something serious. We will fill you in, once the lady in question is ready for all the public attention she will get. In the meantime we ask fans and press alike to not pry on the matter for the time being. We will go public as soon as is responsible.' JLL: 'That sounds fair and I from my side will respect your appeal for privacy and patience on the matter. To add insult to injury, the game winning goal was a short handed marker by Sundin in the second period. In the third Chicago scored a brace and that was that. The three stars award went to Pearce (25 saves), Johansson (0g/2a) and Sundin (1g/0a). Dahl (.933) despite a herculean effort could obviously not beat Pearce's shut out performance. Calgary did not only not score on their lone power play opportunity but gave away a goal, whereas the penalty kill was okay (4/5). Marcel had 0g, 0a, -1, 1 hit and 3sb Daniel had 0g, 0a, +0, 2 PIM (Hooking, lead to a goal against),1 hit, 2sb and 52.27FO% 1-6 This lapsus was but a minor setback for the Wranglers as they steamrolled LA in a 6-1 triumph away. Tessier started the proceedings with a power play marker after 42 seconds played and by the 4:55 minute marker he was done with his natural hattrick. Then there was a little ray of hope for the Stars when they scored mid-way in the same period, but Gonçalves reinstated the three goal lead before the first break. Jokinen in the power play scored the only goal in the second frame. The last word was spoken when Calgary's third line left wing scored the final goal of the match. Tessier (3g/0a), D. Janser (0g/4a) and Jokinen (1g/2a) were named the three best players of the game. Dahl (.962) had a relatively quiet night which and was superior to Vandelay (.854). Tessier and Wolanin brought the Wranglers two up in the first period. The middle frame was a balanced affair with both teams scoring two goals each. Daniel and Tessier found the back of the net for the Albertan team. Janser first wins the draw in the noman's land and passes to Tessier and rushes to the blue line. Tessier gives the pass back to Janser, who circles the net for a wrap around goal. In the third frame, both teams score one, Calgary's Jokinen was successful for his colours. Strasmore intercepts a Malmo attack and sends the puck the other way to Tessier who relays the disc to Wolanin. The winger shoots and Daniel in the slot redirects the shot to give Tsezar no chance to parry. The second period sees a brace by Kotkakoivu, the first of the two being scored on the man advantage. The Wranglers went into the third with a commanding lead of 4-1, but somehow they ran out of steam and allow three consecutive goals within eight minutes. Needless to say that Ricer on the bench was not pleased with the collapse of his team. The sudden death would bring the decision after 4:36 minutes and it was the Captain who delivered the coup de grace. The Swiss Center won the face off in the offensive zone and after some text book one time passes between him, Jokinen and Wolanin, he would have the wide open net in front of him. No reason to ask the Rotkreuz native twice to convert such a layup. The post match awards went to Janser (2g/1a), Kotkakoivu (2g/0a) and Trunov (1g/1a). It took Janser 26 seconds to bring Calgary ahead. Daniel won the opening face off and by a detour to Strasmore, Jokinen and Tessier, the puck landed again on 'Captain Helvetic's tape, just for him to hammer it bar down. 28 seconds later Kotkakoivu followed suit and after 4:04 minutes the score was 3-0 after Gonçalves' marker. Igor Retoslav then pulled one back before the teams were dismissed into their locker rooms. The second frame saw only the one goal from Gonçalves. The third period was a bit more lively as Janser scored 20 seconds after puck drop in the power play. It was as ugly a goal as one could imagine with Janser, Kotkakoivu and Jokinen trying to score, when Daniel buried the biscuit on his second attempt. More through persistence and luck than skill admittedly, but these goals count as much as high light reel material. Tessier scored the next goal before London had two back-to-back markers, one of which was during a Calgary penalty. Janser (2g/2a), Gonçalves (2g/1a) and Jokinen (0g/4a) were asked for an encore on the rink. Dahl (.900) had the upper hand over Nu (.889) in the netminder duel. But Prague started with a wake up call for the Wranglers when they scored the first goal within the first minute. Alas, this impudence was promply answered with three goals by Wolanin and Gonçalves (2). The second frame saw a total of five goal with three Czech markers against two of Calgary's. Janser and Wolanin netted for their team. Dan wins the draw in the neutral zone and via Jokinen, Gonçalves and Tessier the puck comes back to the Swiss forward and after fluffing the first attempt, he buried the rebound off the boards. The final period was all Calgary's with Janser on even strength and Jokinen converting a penalty against Prague. The Portuguese Wonderkind picks up the puck after it zinged on Dahl's cage, and passes it to Tessier, who carries it into the Phantom Zone. His shot misses the net, but Daniel is there to hoover the puck up and to bury it off the post. The three stars were awarded to Laperriere (3g/1a), Janser (2g/2a) and Gonçalves (2g/2a). Calgary's back up Gaming (.871) was a tad better than his opposite number Wallob (.863). Clearly both teams played with open sights.
