The regular season has come to an end and the Americans made it into the post-season. That is the good news, the bad news is, that they lost the third seed they held onto for most of the season. So they need to go through the purgatory of the Wild Card series, which they lead 2-0 at the moment of writing this article. We will review the last two regular season matches.

    6-5 (OT)
The first game featured on this review was against the Swedish Uberteam, Malmö. The teams showed a very entertaining game, at least for the fans of highscoring hockey. Defense-afficionados were sorely disappointed. Lecavalier opened the score with the end of the first period already looming on the horizon. In the second frame, the Swedes tied the game on the power play, when Champagne got a minor for high sticking. This won't be the last time his stick was where it had no business being, but more on that later. New York then scored three consecutives markers. Jeannot, Davis and Mancini found the back of the net for their colours. But the Nighthawks put up a fight and with two back-to-back goals, they culled the lead to one goal. On the third period, Malmö equalized the score with only twenty-two seconds played. Midway through the period, Analfist reinstated the one goal league. At this point in time, Freddy was already taking a shower as he was expelled from the game for a spearing offence. Apparently he forgot for a moment what sport was being played here. With less than six minutes left in the game, the Swedish outfit evened the score again, and the teams had to go to overtime. Less than two minutes passed in same before Malmö secured the extra point. This was the Americans' eleventh OT loss in the season, which is the most league wide. A questionable record for sure. Jeannot (1g/2a), Stone (1g/2a) and Queefson (1g/1a) were awarded the tree stars of the night. 36W (.878) was considerably less awful than Sparks (.800) in Malmö's net. New York's power play was top notch (1/2) while their penalty killing was almost impeccable (7/8).
Janser left the ice with 0g, 1a, +0, 6 PIM (High Sticking, Interference and Cross Checking, none of which lead to a goal against), 1 hit and 3sb
    Rin was credited with 0g, 0a, -1, 0 PIM, 3 hits and 1sb

    1-7
The last match of the season was even more of a defensive nightmare for Vince Wong than the previous one. We are sure that he was questioning what his erstwhile rock solid back row was doing out there. The Dragons came out breathing fire and scored five unanswered goals in the first period, two of which were on the man advantage. They took it down a notch in the second, where they only scored one more on the power play and in the final period they scored their seventh of the night. Alas, the Empire State franchise manage to save at least some of its dignity and managed a consolation goal by Kagamine with five minutes left for Tucker to secure his shut out. It should marvel absolutely no-one that with Grey (2g/2a), Calaway (1g/3a) and Frenchman (1g/2a) all three of the post-game honours went to DC players. In net, it was a no-contest between 36W (.706) and Tucker (.974). New York's power play (0/5) and their offence in general was atrocious, matching the box play teams' performance (2/5).
Callum was noted with 0g, 0a, -3, 2 PIM (Slashing, did not affect the score), 4 hits and 6sb
    Kagamine had 1g, 0a, +0, 0 PIM, 1 hit and 2sb to her name

It is frustrating that the guaranteed playoff seed was given away what was arguably the worst defensive effort of a New York team, since Janser joined the roster. However, this is water under the bridge and the Americans need now to focus on the games ahead. We are certain that they prefer this collective defensive blackout to happen in the dying games of the regular season rather than the post-season.

Here are the final stats for our Dynamic Duo playing for the squad out of the Big Apple.
    Rin: 72gp, 8g, 15a, 23pts, +10, 28 PIM, 64 hits, 111sb, 4ppg, 2gwg
    CGY: 72gp, 12g, 51a, 63pts, +30, 182 PIM, 225 hits, 128sb, 6ppg, 1gwg, 1 First Star nomination

As a closing analysis, we can say that Janser has made progress in almost every aspect of his game. He doubled his goals, had more assists and therefore points, showed a significant improvement on the +/- rating, reduced his time riding the pine by a smidge and remained a physical player as well as a reliable shot blocker. Further and in addition, he could celebrate his 100th apple in the league. So all according to plan and there is no reason, why the management should not be happy with his development.
Sadly, Rin's progress is a different story. It looks like despite undeniable talent, the Japanese defender projects at the moment to become a depth player. In fact, whereas the Swiss Giant showed improvement in most of his stats, the opposite is true for Kagamine. She scored fewer goals as well as fewer assists than last season, despite a better team offence. The +/- rating improved, but not to the same extent as Janser's. She took more penalties on top of the aforementioned. Admittedly it is still a low two-digit number we are talking about and some of it has to do with an improved physical play. Just to be clear, Rin got a gig in a storied VHL franchise, which is more than most can claim for themselves. This is certainly something to be proud of. Alas, we cannot help but feel that with a 15th overall pick, the New York management were looking more in the direction of a franchise player than a bottom four defender. Let's see whether the 'Nagasaki Nightingale' can address the issues that cripple her development and become the star player she was always meant to be.

We will revert with more news in due course. In the interim, why not reading one of the below articles?

    Phil Sakic Biography

This is a short biography about the latest teenage sensation, Phil Sakic. It has always struck this author as odd that we make biographies of athletes and celebrities whose careers are not even over, or more to this point, of ones that have barely even begun. However this is great for my business so I shall tell you the tale of Sakic up to this point.

First, a little more of a pre-amble from yours truly. My name is Phil Knight and I run the prestigious talent agency that has been bringing players to the VHL for multiple decades. As those that know me are fully aware, I specialize in bringing British talent into the VHL. All of their names just happen to also be Phil. What is great about the agency is that I foster not only a passion to the sport but also to the community. A lot of my previous clients are now close friends and work with me to help develop the new generation. You will see some of this in this short story. Alright. Let's begin.

Phil Sakic, yes, is related to the Canadian NHL Hall of Famer Joe Sakic. For privacy's sake I will not tell you exactly how, so just go with it. The lad was born in a small Village outside London in Buckinghamshire called Beaconsfield. It's a quiet area where not much happens. There are local farmers markets and community events, but otherwise it's just your typical small English town of sheep and rolling hills.

Football (soccer) in England is obviously all the rage and all boys play it on the school fields. Generally in the phys-ed curriculum, there is a short unit where the kids learn and play ball hockey, however, field hockey is more well known. Sakic obviously knew of ice hockey because of Joe Sakic and had watched the Winter Olympics replays where he had won gold for Team Canada. He was infatuated with skating - knives attached to shoes. But more so it was how players could move so quickly and gracefully on the slippery surface. Moreover, the handling and deking done with the hard black rubber puck was bewitching to him.

So by 8 years of age, the youngster was already practicing his puck handling in the driveway of his home. His parents bought him a net so he could practice shooting. On some weekends, his parents would also take him into London to the local ice rink during the winters so he could practice skating. They signed him up for skating lessons, however, the only ones they could get him into was figure skating. Phil was fine with that. As long as he could speed across the ice, he didn't care how he did it.

It was only when he was 12 that his dad signed him up for a league. They would make the trip into London 3 times a week. His dad wanted to make sure this was something Phil was serious about before committing such a large chunk of time to pursuing. It was a decent call, and of course Phil had been training, mostly independently, for 4 years for this.

Obviously, he was phenomenal, because otherwise I would not be writing this biography and neither of us would know who he was. I'm not going to bore you with all the statics, but suffice to say that in his first game, he scored 8 times and set up 3 assists. He probably could have done more but he was trying to pass the puck to give others a chance to score. It took him 7 seconds to score his first goal. 16 to score 2. See? You get the point.

By the season's end, the junior hockey team, the London Lions, wanted to reserve a spot for him on their roster for when he turned 15. Let's skip to that part.

So here we have a 15-year old Phil Sakic, clearly a talented skater and handler of the puck, step inside the locker room of the London Lions for the first time. He was completely overwhelmed. They had banners hanging from the rafters of the arena and plaques of individual awards from past legends. He stood in the doorway for a good minute drinking in the history and the moment. This league attracts the best youths in the area and country so this would be the biggest test for Sakic to see if he has a future in ice hockey. I took the train down from Liverpool to attend the game. I knew there were new players starting and wanted to see what the Lions were so excited for.

Now for context, this league has players 15 to 17 years of age. Developmentally that is a monstrous gap. For as you know, so 15 years olds can look like 8 year best people and some 17 year olds can look like grisly men. Sakic, being on the smaller side, would get a huge test on his physicality. As Sakic laced up his skates, he kept replaying Joe Sakics highlight reels in his head. He knew he was meant to play ice hockey and today was the biggest opportunity to date. He was not going to squander it.

10 seconds into the game, all spectators jaws, including mine, were on the floor. From the faceoff, which London lost, Sakic on the wing flew towards the defenseman with the puck, lunged and intercepted the pass across to the other defenseman, shrugged off the checked and trip attempt, and snapped a shot from the slot that snuck under the blocker-side arm of the goalie for a 1-0 lead. It seemed even the players were shocked. What's great about this league is that practices before the first game are not allowed so this was literally the first time anyone on the team had seen Sakic skate.

So the game went on like that. The other team, the Slough Sloths, put immense pressure on Sakic, but he was so quick and agile around the boards, he was always able to skate or pass his way out of trouble. Though he isn't too tall, he has long, powerful legs that he is able to accelerate for as long as he needs, outpacing even the best of Slough's skaters. Sakic ended up helping (really leading) his team to a 16-2 trouncing, putting up 9 goals and 7 assists in the process with a +16 rating. I was already talking with his father, as were a couple of other agents but his father was shooing us away. That's how I knew I needed to make a house call.

And so I showed up, hat in hand, to the Sakic residence to offer my services to Phil. I told him of my past and my agency, telling him that I could have him work with Hall of Famers Phil Gerrard and Phil Rafter to continue developing his skills and help him get drafted to the VHLm. Phil's eyes were wide with excitement but his father told him that they wanted a family meeting to discuss. They told me to come back next week.

I deliberately did not disturb the family during that time. Obviously this is a giant decision and pestering them in the meantime is rather disrespectful. Their lives would change dramatically with the decision to sign with me and both his father and I knew it. No need to state the obvious. So I showed up the same time the next week to check in on them and see if they needed any further information or had reached a decision. Phil had come prepared. He invited me in, his mother presented us with tea and biscuits, and Phil asked me some terrific questions. Of course, I had come prepared as well. I presented Phil my career plan for him. He was thrilled to see that I didn't want him to do anything until he had finished in the league with London. Once he was 17 and a half, that's when he could make the jump to the VHLm. I mapped out how I would support him and guide him to success, gave him my resources, and some pre-paid visa cards to his father. Starting out, not many people have money and since the VHL is an international league, if he ended up in North America, that's a huge cost. I told them I would put them up until he's drafted in the VHL. Although my offer was good for the 3 of them, Phil's father said that since Phil was serious about making this his career, he would be the only one relocating. Phil nodded enthusiastically.

It was a great meeting. I had never really seen such preparedness from a 15 year old when it came to life outside of hockey. So I knew he would be successful where ever he went.

So we fast forward 2 years, and he arrived on his first VHL contract in Canada, home of his relative and favourite NHLer, Joe Sakic, on a 1-year contract for Halifax. We will see what the future holds but the VHL better brace themselves for this young spark. He means business

The New York Americans sit at third seed in the NA conference after 64 games played and a 36-19-9 record. They still sport the best defence in their conference and arguably in the league. While London, Moscow, Warsaw and Malmö have less goals against, they also have 1-3 games less played and hence their respective stats need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Our correspondent from the Big Apple Dick Hammer has caught up with the Swiss back for a brief interview.

DH: 'Good Morning, Callum. Thanks for meeting us. Nearing the end of the regular season New York looks like they are playoff-bound.'
CGY: 'Hi Dick. Indeed, if my math is correct, we should at least make the Wild Card games. Our remaining schedule contains matches against LA, Vancouver and Calgary, who have not the best season for different reasons. The Stars are clearly in a rebuild and the Wolves and the Wranglers do not perform as well as their rosters would suggest. Unfortunately, catching the Bears is now out of our hands, as we do not face them anymore in the regular season and we need to rely on them to dropping points in their remaining matches. This is a tall call with such an experienced GM like Campbell at the helm.'
DH: 'You reached a hundred points in the VHL and doubled your goal production compared to last year. Do you develop into a more offensive minded defender now?'
CGY: 'I think that would be too ambitious. Of course I work on this areas as well, as they are not as developed as my defensive skills. But I guess I will never become a high scoring defender like uncle BoJo.'
DH: 'You mean Bo Johansson the Chicago legend? I did not know that you are related.'
CGY: 'I call him 'uncle' because my dad bonded with him during their mutual careers and latest since the S86 Award ceremony, when my old man won all the forward awards and Bo collected all the defensive awards. But yeah, I think my offensive play has improved a bit, but it is certainly not my strong suit. I am more capable at the defensive side of the game and I doubt this will change. It is just my style of game. In that respect, I am more similar to Marcel than dad.'
DH: 'Since you were named alternate captain in your rookie season, we have seen a massive development in your leadership, a trait which is often overlooked in modern hockey.'
CGY: 'I think it is an important factor. It does not necessarily need a letter on your chest. One can lead in many different ways. I have seen people who lead very vocal. Others lead by example and only speak up if the shit hits the fan. Which gives their words so much more weight. Both of them can work and I am not saying one is better than the other. In the army, I could exert leadership partly because it was backed up by rank given to me. Alas, in the Swiss army, everyone starts as a grunt and has to earn their stripes by a combination of leadership and competence. I got more confident this season, as I have proven my competence on the ice in my rookie campaign.'
DH: 'Are you looking forward to the playoffs?'
CGY: 'Every professional athlete worth his salt does. This is when the rubber hits the road. This is the time when boys are separated from men. There are players who live for that time of the year. They may have mediocre regular seasons, just to become clutch players in the post-season. Claude Lemieux in the 94-95 NHL season comes to mind for example. Dude was meh in the regular season but won the cup and the Conn Smythe. However, our team will do whatever we can to break the New York playoff curse. There are some players like Freddy and Vinny who would like to end their careers with a second cup.'
DH: 'Okay, that were all the questions I had. Thanks and good luck in the playoffs.'
    CGY: 'Thanks for having me.'

Daniel Janser reacted to jacobcarson877 in GET HIM MODS HE'S LITERALLY TAMPERING
I think the leadup to the VHL Draft is probably one of my favourite portions a career. Considering how the last draft cycle went for me, with me spending a large portion of my career with the team that drafted me, building a dynasty with them and eventually winning our Continental Cup together, my hopes are high.

Looking forward to my VHL career, my goal this time around is being in the right place at the right time for my personal career. I had a blast riding on Daniel Janser’s coattails last time around, and I still hold that time very dear to me. But this time I’m giving myself the best odds to get myself a legendary personal career. I will be communicative, I will be helpful, I will give my all to whichever franchise has my contract currently. But I will have no objection to hitting FA or working towards trades. With that in mind, I want to outline my current thoughts toward each of the VHL Franchises and how I think they will fit my player, Jillian Woods.

    Calgary Wranglers

Funnily enough, this is the only VHL Franchise to have drafted me. Never played for them the first time around, as they seem to have just picked BPA and then ended up with a bunch of random VHL-ish goalie prospects and shipped me off. Landon Wolanin obviously played a large chunk of time there. Seeing how Strasmore, McFleury and Stauffer have struggled to put up offense though, I am not sure this is a good fit right now.

    Chicago Phoenix

Cole is a GM that I’ve always wanted to play for, and there are a decent amount of young prospects that should have a good amount of success. I’m not sure they have a Janser-level talent here, but this feels very reminiscent of what Calgary looked like coming into S84. I fear that I would probably ride along with Lamb and Collberg for a long while before I could ever step into my own. It would be a great ride, but I wonder if there are better options for my personal success.

    D.C. Dragons

D.C is an interesting scenario. They’re very obviously putting their efforts into winning right here, right now. They’ve got the next couple of seasons lined up, assuming they can find a Tucker Jr replacement, but this could be a great shot for someone like me to shine. Sure, they’ve got Calaway and some really solid supplementary defenders, but a second defender here could get some really strong usage on a team that will certainly score goals.

    HC Davos Dynamo

Davos has very little on their roster, but a ton of draft capital and prospects. This was an expertly planned rebuild, and should be a very potent team. They’ve secured Bucatini and Forum Content up front that should be high TPA players, some decent goaltending prospects, but their main lack here is on defense. Getting to be the player who can take advantage of some high-potential players, especially while the talent level is still low, would give me a great shot of shooting out the gate hot.

    Helsinki Titans

I’m not really sure what to make of Helsinki at this point. This season was obviously not supposed to have happened this way for the team, they had lots of talent, but were a piece or 2 short of the rest of the insanity that is Europe at the moment. They have a lot of prospects, but very few in VHLE territory and none above 300TPA. Most of the team will be aging out by the time I’d be getting around, but for a couple seasons, maybe we could get up to some trouble. Not hugely optimistic though.

    London United

... hi guys. If you’ve been paying attention to the United roster over the last few seasons, I am a high-TPA defender hater. I much prefer to dump my cap into forwards and goaltenders, which yes, is ironic since I made a defender. I’m sure if I was on the board for myself I would take myself, but we both know that won’t happen, and I’ll be okay without that happening.

    Los Angeles Stars

Not much here to talk about. Much like Helsinki they have a lot of prospects but not many that are near the VHL roster. I wouldn’t mind being one of the first pieces, but I’d probably prefer being the second draft of a rebuild.

    Malmo Nighthawks

This has always been a very D-heavy franchise, and I’m sure Kaleeb knows how to sling D around by now. McFleury will be gone, and Stone aging out, could be a great chance for me to step inat the perfect time to become the next guy. The question is whether there will still be a contending team by that point.

    Moscow Menace

Who keeps giving Moscow picks? Yeah this team is already a contender and has a boatload more picks coming. There’s no room for me I’m afraid, even if it would be a great ship to ride along on.

    New York Americans

This team has been built from the back, and should be set there for the first half of my career. I don’t really think this is the spot that gets me the best start. I will cheer them on in their attempt to break the curse though, as I do always love a curse-breaker. If I were a forward, this would be a prime target for me.

    Prague Phantoms

Prague is on a heater here in their last-ditch effort to get another Cup. By the time I’m up, there won’t much left from the current roster, if anything. They may not have much to sell and this may be a long rebuild. Much like the Stars, could be fun to be a first piece, but I’d much prefer to be in the second draft of a rebuild.

    Riga Reign

Riga will have a new GM coming in for the first time in forever. This core didn’t really turn out, but some pieces could carry over, or some real assets could be recouped and a great team created. This is a really enticing spot for me, and I’m hoping that a great GM can be put in to run this rebuild.

    Seattle Bears

I have always been a Seattle hater, as a Wranglers fan. But hey Leandro and Ricer have both done a stint there, so surely it can’t be that taboo. I can never really project what Seattle will be with Bana’s unique ability to just decide to compete and then it just happens. If I were to pick a positional need now though, it would be on defense and with a lot of talent retiring shortly, I could certainly find a spot in their retool, along with Mina.

    Toronto Legion

Toronto is another team all in, and have a lot of talent retiring in the next couple of seasons. If they choose to ride to the end, this could be a tough rebuild, but they could also be the best team in the league for a couple more seasons. Really depends on what their plan is as to whether I would want to be in on this team. Could either be a really convenient timing on my part, or being the worst defender on a stacked, aging roster.

    Vancouver Wolves

This is pretty much the same situation as Moscow, but a couple seasons behind. This team is loaded, will probably secure their final pieces this draft and move on to kick our asses until we change the rules again. Some things never change my friends and Vancouver winning in the finals against Moscow may once again be on the cards for the next 5 seasons. Oh, and there’s no room for me in this inn.

    Warsaw Predators

This is the oldest, youngest team out there. I fear they may be perpetually cursed to have 3 good pieces forever. What it does mean is that the top couple of players on this squad rack up major success, but the team ends 5th or 6th. Would be a great launching point for me, and maybe I can help break the cycle! I have fond, distant memories of Warsaw, and would love to be back at some point.

Anyways, that’s about it. Some final disclaimers here for legal purposes. This article does not replace a draft interview. This article does not exclude anyone. Also shoutout to this ridiculous S94 Class, and this wave of defenders who will inevitably kick my ass my whole career.

Janser was jogging in the Central Park alongside his roomie, Rin Kagamine. As they were considering to take a swim afterwards, Callum had his backpack with him with the swim trunks and all the other necessities for such an endeavour. When the two Americans backs approached the final stretch, the hulking Swiss heard a cry of distress from a nearby path. From the sound of it, it appeared to be an elderly lady. So he swerved to his right to see what the ruckus was about. There was indeed an elderly lady staring up a tall tree.
'You cried for help, ma'am. How can we be of assistance?'
'Oh finally someone coming to the rescue. What a fine young man you are. Clarice got scared by a big dog and climbed that tree. I cannot climb it, I am too frail to do so.'
'Not a problem, ma'am. Is Clarice your grand-daughter?'
'No, Clarice is my Maine-Coon kitten. We were taking a walk in the park. I had her on the leash but once she saw the Rottweiler, she wiggled out of her collar and raced up the tree.'
    'I understand.'
Callum but his backpack on the front so he could contain the kitten once he reached her. He climbed the tree with no apparent effort, being used to climb the Swiss mountains with little to no protrusion, climbing an elm tree was a walk in the park. He lured the kitten with some of the treats her owner provided him with and the scaredy kitty-cat approached him cautiously. Dangling from a branch on one arm, Janser snatched the fugitive and put her into his back pack, closing the zipper so only the head of the pet stuck out.
He descended like the seasoned climber that he is and brought the kitten back to the lady waiting impatiently.
'Oh thank you sir. How can I ever thank you for bringing her back to me.'
'Ma'am, no thanks are needed. It was a pleasure to climb again. Take care of your little rascal.'
    'I will. Thanks again.'
