I actually listened to all of it, as I was determined to try and make out whatever I could of Victors voice. I must say, the highlight was Victor's "Boom's one season cameo" comment. Obviously

Off to arguably their best start in franchise history, the New York Americans are still looking to get better. Xin Xie Xiao had a pair of goals including the game winner, and the New York Americans beat the Helsinki Titans for the second time in a row in the back to back series with a 3-0 win. Odin Tordahl added another goal and Andrey Zadorov had 3 assists as the surging Americans shutout the Titans in back to back games.

“We’re doing really well right now. I think we’re 17-2 and but everyone in the locker room thinks we can do better. That’s the exciting part, to think there are things we can do to be a better team. XXX has been on a tear lately and everything he is putting on net seems to be going in. Him and Odie have been a great pair out there, always dangerous and making things happen. Slaughter is always at the right place at the right time and is supporting them with great decisions and smart plays. “ – Assistant Coach Rick Mercer

The Americans are top team in the league so far just 1/3 into the season with a record of 17-0-2. Odin Tordahl is leading the league with 39 points and teammate Xin Xie Xiao is sitting second in the league with 35 points. Odin is also leading the league with 19 goals and Xin is leading the league in plus/minus. The goalie tandem, that was a questioned move in the off season by GM ADV has been solid thus far though Tuomas Tukio has gotten the majority of the game starts but proven the pickup has been good for the team success.

In other news, Jakob Linholm has started off his VHL career fairly decently. A solid all-around player, he has been producing at just shy of 0.5ppg playing with Kellinger and Laich. There is quite a bit of promise in Linholm, a player drafted in S37 whom has put up great numbers in the VHLM. Projected as a solid top six player, Linholm is adapting to the pro game nicely. He skates well, isn’t a liability in his own end and has a great nose for the net. With the exit of Simon Tremblay to the Wranglers, Linholm will have to take charge of the opportunity to solidify himself in the vacant spot. Big shoes to fill (Tremblay was one of the top scorers during his time with the Americans) but ultimately the staff believe he can get there in time.

Newcomer Wesley Kellinger has also been a great presence on the second line. Not only has he been putting up points, he has been a great veteran presence for youngsters Logan Laich and Linholm. While perhaps not as used to being in a secondary role, Kellinger has thrived in the position and reportedly has been pleased with the team success.

Unsung hero and sometimes forgotten on the score sheet is Logan Laich whom leads the team in hits with 82. His punishing style of game has endeared him to fans and his can do attitude is always encouraging in the locker room. A great team player, and a vocal leader in the locker room, Laich has all the makings of a future team leader.

With a great collection of star power and youth moving forward, it remains to be seen how the Americans will fare in the playoffs, and how the youngsters on the team will deal with the tough grind as the season drags on.

What a difference a week makes we now have twenty-two prospects out of the thirty needed for three rounds listed on our draft board.  We also saw fifteen players show signs of improvement in the pre-season leading up to the opening game of Season 38.  Today we are here to highlight the four prospects at the top who had already logged in over one-hundred hours of practice and the season hadn’t even started.  There are plenty of other honorable mentions in Tyson Stokes, Andrew Erikson, and Jose Canseco but that is for another time.  Today is about those four that already have their eye on the first overall draft selection.

    F – Jackson Miller – Canada
First up we have Jackson Miller who will probably garner the most attention throughout the season.  He is part of the Beketov Agency dating back to the inaugural first season of the VHL with Robert Sharpe.  Recent memory saw us with another goalie in Evgeni Chekhov who while dedicated to his craft never panned out for one reason or another.  Heading into the first week of the season Miller seems to already have that X-Factor that teams like to build a franchise around.

Though he is listed as a winger he looks like a true playmaker that might have talents best suited as a center.  His near future is no question he will be a VHL starter day one come Season 39.  Many would say he is nearly VHL ready currently.  If there is one knack on Miller is that some question his long term viability he could burst onto the VHL with Rookie of the Year potential and eventually plateau.

    D – Mikkel Boomgaarden – USA
Boomgaarden has VHL pedigree backing him as well.  The Boragina Agency founded by well-known VHLer Matthew Boragina is also responsible for recent retiree Yuri Grigorenko.  Mikkel Boomgaarden is a big solid defenseman that moves with speed and agility that you wouldn’t expect from his 6’5” 222lb frame.  I’d say he will also be VHL ready once the Season 39 Draft is upon us later this summer.

Early scouting reports have Mikkel as a predominately offensive D-man who still has the physical tools to get the job done in his own end and in the corner.  He reminds us of recent VHL Rookie of the Year candidate Slaeter Fjorsstrom who has had great success in his early career with Riga.  The same lingering concern as Miller sits with Boomgaarden.  Expect an explosion onto the VHL scene with the potential for a mid-late career ceiling that could stall out their careers.

    F – Tyrone Williams – USA
Yet another top prospect in this draft with ties to great former VHLers.  This time Tyrone Williams from Koradek half fashion designer half VHL player agent whose most notable players include Pavel Koradek and Alexander Valiq.  Could this be another home run player or could this be the player that too falters after appearing to be a can’t miss prospect.

Unlike Miller whose build as a playmaker Williams is more of a possession, gritty, and grinder type player.  Imagine that without the desire to actually hit during the play.  That’s right Williams actually prefers to instigate fights and do his talking after the play without throwing his body around.  He is a goal scoring, puck handling, smooth skater, and likes to play mind games.

    D – Koji Yamazaki – Japan
Last but certainly not least is the rare hockey specimen from Japan.  Coming in at an astounding 6’4” his countrymen all flee in his presence he is the hottest VHL prospect right now.  There is no backstory to who and where he came from other than the fact he declared for the VHL Draft and is one of the best prospects in it.

Yamazaki is the prototypical defenseman with a big frame and not afraid to throw his body around.  He could be an asset on the powerplay but is usually an offensive liability.  His strengths are in his own end clearing the puck and causing turnovers in the neutral zone.  He moves very well for his size and is a guaranteed top five pick right now.  I’d go so far as to say Koji goes in the top three in the Season 39 Draft and has a VHL roster spot waiting he won’t be in the minors after this season.

Americans Looking for Big Things from S37 Draftees

The New York Americans have gone out this off-season and brought together a team that they hope will be able to lead them to a Continental Cup championship in the upcoming season. The team has been very active this past off-season signing notable free agents Wesley Kellinger and Tuomas Tukio. While these new signings, as well as returning stars such as Connor Low, Odin Tordahl and Xin Xie Xiao, will be looked at to carry most of the load for the Americans this next season, it is going to have to be the young guns from the S37 Draft class that will need to step up to set the Americans apart from the rest of the league.

The S37 draft saw the Americans hold the second, third and fourth overall picks in the draft and they decided to use it to round out their top two lines of forwards. With their selections they took Jakob Linholm, Tom Slaughter and Logan Laich to lead them into the future. This upcoming season will be the first time that all three of these picks will be playing together in the VHL and it has the Americans very excited to see what these 3 picks can do.

    Tom Slaughter

Tom Slaughter was one of the most highly touted prospects in recent memory and had the entire league excited for his arrival. He had amassed a ridiculous amount of practice hours during his time in the VHLM and was predicted to be one of the favorites to win rookie of the year. He didn't disappoint his first season and managed to rack up an impressive 76 points in 72 games and, just as he was predicted to do, he went on to win the top rookie award. He is expected to do even more damage in the upcoming season and is expected to be a fixture on the Americans top line for many years to come.

    Logan Laich

Logan Laich is another highly touted prospect but many people thought he could still use another season in the VHLM to polish his skills. The Americans thought differently and decided to keep him up in S37. While he managed to get an impressive 321 hits in the season his point totals were not impressive putting up a measly 12 points in 72 games. He has shown flashes of greatness and will be looked at to improve his offensive production in the upcoming season.

    Jakob Linholm

Linholm was the only one of the three picks to not play the VHL last season and was sent down to the minors to showcase his talents there. During his season with the Minot Gladiators he put up an impressive 129 points as their captain. He has a well-rounded game but nothing that seems to stand out. Just like Slaughter last season, Linholm is one of the favorites to win the Rookie of the Year award and help play a part in the Americans plans for a championship season.

These three young talents will be called upon this season to compete with the very best the game has to offer and perform well each and every night. The Americans is a franchise that demands success and these three will be looked at to elevate their game in the upcoming season and help show that the Americans struck gold in the S37 draft.
