Roberto Martucci had a slight problem at the start of the season, when he ran into some trouble with Finnish citizens (Details on this story: http://vhlsim.invisionzone.com/index.php?/topic/6131-martucci-and-lehtinen-caught-in-hostage-situation/). However, once everything was settled and Martucci was ready to debut in a Titans uniform, he was prepared. Martucci has only played 7 games but has amassed 11 points for the Titans. On a team that isn’t expected to do much, Martucci and Lehtinen are the two bright spots who seem to be producing every game.

This will be Martucci’s final season in the VHL and many assume he will be traded to a contender some time this season to get one chance at a Cup. The only thing people don’t know is where will Martucci be going and when will he be traded? As of right now, there are no rumours, but he could be moved at any point in time if Helsinki GM Ethan Osbourne gets a fair offer on the retiring winger.

My time on the Mag Editorial didn't quite work out as I planned so I've decided to jump back into my comfort zone with some VHL history. Instead of bombarding you all with historical facts however, I've proposed a new column entitled “Historical Significance” where I will try to pick a recent event or achievement every week and put it into perspective in VHL history.

The inaugural edition of this column will be looking at Kimmo Salo, the recently-drafted new franchise Helsinki Titans goaltender. In fact, that's a false advertisement as Salo won't be mentioned much from here on out. What struck me as interesting at the recent VHL draft was that Salo, a Finnish goalie, was drafting by our Finnish team: the Titans. In fact, the recently traded Tuomas Tukio, Helsinki's go-to guy (or at least when HEL G was unavailable) for six seasons, was also a Finn, though Salo took it a step further by being born in Helsinki too. Another Helsinki-born netminder once played for Helsinki in Season 16, that was my own first-gen Vase Trikamaki in his final year in the VHL.

So, three Finns and two born in Helsinki have worn Titan teal (it's cornflower blue really). My thought process must be easy to follow now, as I simply went and looked at the other active or at least notable goaltenders in Titan history.

    S1-S5: Maxim Desny (Russian)
    S6-S11: Dominik Stryker (German)
    S12-S15: Izaak Muller (Swiss)
    S19-S24: Jakob Kjeldsen (Danish)
    S25-S28: Claudio Martucci (Italian)
    S29-S30: Pekka Svenson (Swedish)

You'll notice a gap between Trikamaki (S16) and Kjeldsen (S19) which was filled by some scrubs like Jimmy Ryan and Erich Schomann, at least one of whom was European. This brings me to the key point of my findings: every goalie of note in Titans history was European. Three Finns, two more Scandinavians, and a whole host of other nationalities but not a single North American. Are they the only such franchise? Quite probably so as I can think of at least one Canadian or American for every other franchise including Cologne and Quebec. Is this significant? Not really but you have to admit it's fairly cool.

That should be the essence of this column, however long it may last. Statistics will likely come into play sooner or later and some findings will be more pride-enticing than others. Kimmo Salo can in the meantime pride himself on being a reason for one of my articles, the starter of a trend, and a new addition to a Helsinki production line of great European goaltenders. In terms of goaltending, the Titans are historically renowned for consistently strong performers, including cup-winners, Tretiak Trophy winners, and even playoff MVPs. In any case, that's sufficient rambling now, until next week, this has been “Historical Significance”.

Mag #182 will be my last at least for the near future.  I'm going to be bringing back a weekly draft focused thing that will document players TPE and trending draft prospects.  It won't have a set format including things from interviews, random comments, and spotlighting draftees.  I wouldn't be apposed to keeping mag access and joining up for special articles in place of this new thing throughout the season.

I started around #160 right as the old site went down and while 20+ isssues/weeks isn't an extremely long tenure I do feel that my general topics were unique and brought with a different point of view.  If I get dropped from the Mag LR in the near future just here to say it was fun while it lasted.

I'm just saying you'll be able to regain that TPE + more with VHLM bonuses.

You gotta agree that a goalie starting over 180 TPE in the minors is a pretty big advantage and turn off for new guys with 10.

Will The Real GM Please Stand Up?

The VHL has ten pro teams meaning there are ten pro GMs.  Many people around the league know each other not necessarily in real life but through relationships forged over years of online interactions.  It could be simple private messages, through chat, or even the occasional Skype conversation.  Through these interactions you start to get a real true picture of what other people around the league are like.  What they do for work, where they go to school, what their major is, how old they are, and other personal information.  It isn’t even unheard of for relatives or friends in real life to be part of the VHL.  We’ve even seen members from the VHL meet in real life.

However beyond the many layers of each individual person there is a deeper and darker place that is sometimes very difficult to understand.  I am of course talking about trying to decipher the real motives of a general manager.  Each GM in the VHL takes a different approach to getting things done and each one may or may not act differently as a member vs being a GM.  What I mean by this is I personally act completely different in general online than I do in real life.  There are certain members who I act more like myself around but while wearing my “GM Mask” there is yet another completely different person.

When dealing with other general managers around the league do you reciprocate with friendship, apprehension, or something else?  You have conversations all the time with a fellow GM, you possibly talk with them on Skype, and maybe you even play random video games online with them as well.  The time eventually comes to negotiate a trade you think deep down about how you consider this person to be your friend.  In this instance though are they nothing more than just an advisory?

Each GM in the league handles each task differently.  However it is very rare to find someone who is always the same person.  We all wear different masks teachers, students, co-workers, friends, and family.  Deciphering the motives of other GMs is just a small part of the much bigger game that we call the VHL.  For when you play the game of VHL you win, or you die.  There is no middle ground.
