Back in late 2010 I was about to make my third VHL player James Bencharski who would end up on the Toronto dynasty of the early S20s. The General Manager of the Legion at the time was David Knight, renowned 'fucking prick' and all around good leader. Little did I know before Season 18 that some shlub named ssdd911 was David's older brother Phil. I also didn't know that Phil would become one of my all-time favourite members in the VHL. Even as a youngin' in the league, Phil had no insecurity or shyness. He was instantly a fun guy to have around. Someone who was positive and someone who was willing to do a lot of work behind the scenes with little credit.

I mentioned the Toronto Legion because Phil ended up being drafted by the Seattle Bears who we were bitter rivals with Toronto during that time. Phil Gerrard became a Hall of Fame first generation player (TPE Record) and we eventually acquired him via trade. Phil and I spent the next four seasons together so I got to know him well. He is one of the best locker room members in the league. That's a fact most members can verify if they've ever been on a team with him and although I haven't played with him in some time, that still remains true. Phil came into the league with a head full of steam, seeking to gain as much TPE as he could muster with his oversized biceps. That unrelenting thirst for success lead Phil to first become a grader.

Phil was a prolific grader back when grading was a bloody mess. Every point task required two full grades and this often took many days. Phil graded thousands of articles and podcasts and often times did more grading than he could possibly claim for TPE. Being the egomaniac that he is, Phil wanted me to mention to you that he was twice named the Grader of the Year (an award I'm pretty sure he made up). On a serious note, I always remember appreciating Phil because he was such a solid grader. It turns out two kids drowned in the Sheraton Hotel pool while Phil was reading our media spots during work hours. Now that's commitment! Phil also filled in as Head Grader when required.

Phil's quest to be good shifted focus onto the first gen TPE record (has since been broken). He took on the role of World Cup Commish, a fairly thankless job that actually required a lot of work over a short period of time. Phil always did a superb job with this (he did it five times). Notably, he compiled all the stats for the tournament which was an enormous task in itself. Phil also recently acted as the best and what ended up being the last Super Cup Commish. Because he did such a good job, we had to stop the Super Cup. We could never have replicated his tremendous feat with another person in charge.

Phil took on the role as the European Conference updater toward the end of Gerrard's career. He also started to take on a number of shitty, under-appreciated roles around the league such as compiling specific team's all-time statistic lists, World Cup stats lists, TPE index, and Hall of Fame statistics. Phil was also half of a very popular podcast that included his brother David. Without David, he continued his own podcast which was equally as popular.

My most appreciated job Phil ever undertook was as the member HOF - he literally decorated and created the modern VHL Hall of Fame as we know it today. Perhaps it's not that important to some, but as a first season member and someone who takes a lot of pride in what the VHL has become, I really appreciate Phil's work in keeping our history strong. This is easily one of the least recognized things ever done in VHL history and it's finally time Phil gets full recognition by this paragraph hanging in the Hall of Fame rafters.

Later on I hired Phil as a mentor for the Recruitment Crew. I couldn't think of a better person for the job. Phil is engaging, he's witty, he's likable. He puts people at ease and makes them feel welcomed. Phil is smart and he knows the league well. He's the perfect person you want new members talking to. He's done this for many seasons without much recognition at all. Often times he's been the only member doing this, answering many questions from new members and even editing their point tasks. Phil also became a member of the Board of Governors and has provided valuable insight there as well.

With that said, regardless of all the work Phil Knight has done in the VHL and his multiple Hall of Fame players, he will be most remembered as just a plain old good person. One of the very best people in the league. He's one of the reasons why I stick around this joint. He's just the kind of guy you like being friends with. He's kind, he can take a joke and he's a hard worker. Without Phil, this place would be a lot worse of a place. When the initial debate occurred in regard to this induction, some members didn't agree with it.  Not because Phil didn't deserve it, but because Phil is the kind of person willing to do things because they need to be done and not because he wants people to recognize him. That's the reason why most people don't even know about most of the work he's done. He even had to get his brother to make his quarterly post on his behalf in that thread because he didn't want to toot his own horn!

This fall Smarch and I met Phil in Toronto. He's just a straight-up good person. The personality he displays on here is how he is in real life. He treats other people well, he's modest and he's likable. Even after this all ends, he's the guy I still want to be friends with. I give him a rough time on the boards, but that's very facetious. So welcome to the Hall of Fame as a Builder Philip, you definitely deserve the honour with all the hard work you've done over the years. Here's to many more my friend. Cheers

Great article professing your love for Phil. In your first paragraph you successfully sent me on a inner quest to figure out if 'fucking prick' is a compliment or not. In all honesty it was a very nice article honoring Phil and a great read, from the comments it seems like everyone agrees with me on that. No real errors in grammar that I can find, and solid formatting as well. 2 thumbs up
