Most Surprising/Disappointing Draft Picks Since I've Been Here Pt.2

Part One

Season 38

Most Surprising: Don Draper, 3rd Overall. This draft wasn’t good for surprises, but I don’t think many people saw Draper rise up the ranks quite as quickly as he did

Most Disappointing:  Vojczek Svoboda, 1st Overall. Retired after three seasons in the league. Second overall was Hall of Famer Bruno Wolf.

Season 39

Most Surprising: Milos Denis, 7th Overall. Bounced back from the disappointing Tyler Owens (Drafted in S35) with a key depth piece for the New York Americans and later a 90+ point player for the Meute.

Most Disappointing: Mikkel Boomgaarden, 4th Overall Coming off of the near 1000 TPE Yuri Grigorenko, the 180 TPE Boomgaarden was a big step down. Won two cups (S39/S41), but actually didn’t pick up a single point in either playoff series.

Season 40

Most Surprising: Marcus Hurley, 25th Overall. Most drafts nowadays don’t last this long, but Hurley was picked here and was a long-term contributor to the Calgary Wranglers. Jody 3 Moons at 10th Overall, Christoph Klose at 14th Overall and Niklas Kurri at 27th Overall also exceeded expectations.

Most Disappointing: Joshua Rubin, 9th Overall. Was not terrible, but didn’t ever achieve over a point per game and only achieved 400 TPE when four of the next five players picked after him earned at least 650 TPE.

I was around for all of those.

Milos Denis was definitely a gem. He was a big player for the Meute when I was there with Boychuk with my first player. Fun times.

Jody 3 Moons. Gorlab really had a great player there on the Stockholm Vikings. Same as Hurley, Klose, and Kurri. Klose is a legend in my books....one of the great power forwards.

Svoboda. Man, that guy was so active all over the boards. I was on his team with the Turku Outlaws with Boychuk before we both hit the VHL. He helped me a lot on this site.

Slobo helped a lot of people on this site over the years, but he always had so much going on with his life that I was shocked he stuck around as long as he did.

For the first 20 seasons or so I would say Slobo was arguably the most active person on the site outside of maybe the blue team. Considering his health problems and such it was honestly amazing. I do wonder what ever happened to him. As grim as it is I kinda wonder if he ever managed to fight the cancer off or not.

That answers that then, good to know he’s not dead I suppose.

LOL I think that was darker than the original post

But seriously, good to hear he's doing well!

Hurley was snubbed out of a few Top Leader awards. There were times he had enough votes to move to the final round of voting (back when Top Leader was decided by rounds of voting, briefly) and they didn't put him in the final round anyway, because he wasn't as big a contributor to the rest of the site. He was constantly in game threads though, hyping up Calgary whether we performed well or poorly.

@Cuffy come back to us :)

The weird thing about Top Leader was that at some point it changed to just a pure member vote (like the Slobo), but I don't actually ever remember it being announced that it would change to that format, so Hurley might have won it if that had been implemented earlier.
