Reading through the comments, the only opinion that I can offer as a returning member, I think it would be nice to have an #Introduce-Yourself tab to the Discord underneath the #General tab.

I found that when I joined, General Chat was extremely active and already having an existing conversation (15-20 replies per minute). I found myself hesitant to abruptly enter general chat and interject the conversation to introduce myself. I think if that's my thought as an returning member from S2 - S25, someone brand new to the league might find it a bit overwhelming to jump in and say hello, even though everyone is extremely kind and accepting!

We do have a #newcomers-help under the VHLM tab and that is kind of like that but Im sure we could combine the two to make it more obvious.

The last thing a new player needs is 15 people messaging them constantly, with the Mentor program, a mentor would have to specify which players they are talking to so that there's no duplicates (in an spread sheet).

That might last a total of 2 weeks before failing. Especially because speed is of the essence and having their GM try to help them at the same time will create conflicts between GM's and "Mentors". I think the following would be more efficient and easier than having "mentors"

    1. Updated auto welcome DM and a team of 2-3 people included on the message to increase response time and follow up
    2. New Member Questions thread like the discord version but on the forums (where new members can post in to find previous members questions and answers)

    3. VHLM AGM pay is 1 TPE as they are a huge contributor to member retention and helping teach new members.

    4. Replace ineffective VHLM GM's

That would fix the issue while having no new moving parts and or conflicts of interest.

The way I envision a new player joining the community could be as follows:

    -Create a player

-User goes through automated waiver process

-After team is chosen, we give them the welcome message, the Tagger video, a link to VHL Discord, and their team Discord.
-When this occurs "@Mentors" would get tagged either on the forums and/or Discord. From there someone in the Mentor team can be like "OK i got this one"
-That mentor works 1-on-1 with new user on Discord over the course of a few days/week/however long is needed to go over the whole process of being in the league.

bold 1: I am of the crowd that believe that choosing a team gets you engaged and talking by using the forums right away so I would be against an automated process or else they would never leave the portal.

bold 2: In a perfect world a mentor would be the VHLM GM / VHLM AGM that handles them as they have a direct incentive to get them up to date and learning the systems.

    Questions:

    1. What's your favorite attribute in the sim and why?
Id say my favorite would most likely be Defence. It increases scoring and decreases goals against nothing to hate about this stat.

    2. Which is the most useless attribute in the sim and why?

Id say skating but my skating meta idea has been proven not to really be effective. I will most likely have to add to skating shortly.

    3. What's your in-between period snack during games?
Prob a dry scoop of pre workout and maybe a muffin.

    1. How are you feeling about your players performance so far this season?

    2. What is the main goal of your player this season? want to hit 20 goals?

    3. Do you use the VHL's Discord? If so why and if not why not?

  5. TLDR: Hardest thing about retention is how niche the community is to start. A lot of people think its cool so they join but realize how much it is and the fact that forums are now "outdated" tech eliminates some of the newbies. Then they have to write or do a point task every week and they see the monumental task that is and eliminates some more. By the time you get through all the hurdles you end up with 5-10% of the sign ups just because of the steps above.

In my idea the Mentor idea is cool in theory but without an automated system it will fall apart very quickly. Giving VHLM AGMs 1 tpe as an incentive to engage their players and to help teach them would be a good boost to retention most likely.

A new and updated welcome message would most likely to do wonders for retention because I know a lot of that auto message is super wordy and out of date. I remember when I was the sender of the email out of every 20 sent I might get one reply but if I added onto the message id almost always get a response which greatly helped retention from the small sample size.

You will never improve retention to the point that everyone wants to get it too just because of the nicheness of the community. If we could get them more engaged quickly (better VHLM GM's) we would have a much higher chance of retaining a few more. This is why I think the mentorship idea is great in theory but will never be effective and I can speak to this as someone that has done the job most likely the longest on this site.

We had a thread a while ago where there was a long discussion about evaluating GM performance and removing the ones that weren't up to the standards we want. It might be worth revisiting that if we're getting a lot of complaints about GMs not caring about their players, because that's a problem.

I'm still of the opinion that a mentoring crew is unnecessary if the GMs that are issues are dealt with, but if there's popular support for it I don't hate it.

I agree with the addition of an updated welcome DM as I had some good discussions with new users via that feature and updating it could do wonders.

I think the only issue I have with having a mentorship program is that it means that theres a larger problem within the VHLM. VHLM GM's need to told what their role is. If they, as a collective, understand their role then we have our mentorship program.

I think its the MGM and MAGM's jobs to help teach them the league. If we had an updated welcome message with a follow up message from the original sender a day after they start I feel it could close up the gap that people are starting to see.

My initial thoughts were to have some sort of sign-up thread and once someone has been signed up when another member joins thay are immediately put in contact with the person to walk them through the initial week or so of the VHL so that way they can figure out everything and have a specific person to ask questions to specifically when their GM is not around.

We already have a welcome to the league DM that used to be sent by me back when I was commish and I tried to help people constantly through it. I proposed an overhaul of the auto message to @Beketovand @Josh but im unsure of if those changes were made or anything with done with it. I think the best way to do that would have that message be updated and have someone selected to do it other than Beke and Josh as I know there is a lot more important things to be done instead of helping new players.

There does. We should reword the rule to include manipulation of any sort, because “I didn’t get my player” and “but it was still the 1st” are technically true if we’re speaking entirely about the letter of the law rather than the spirit.

IMO that's why Spart got away with it. Since he didn't break any rules but its still a dickhead move IMO. I'm not sure why people cant separate the two roles. Want your own player? Move up the draft for them or trade for them in the future. Don't tank your own draft stock or threaten to go to FA right away so you can weasel yourself.
