Calder O’Callahan is nine games into his VHLM career with the Las Vegas Aces. This article takes a look into O’Callahan’s role on the team and his production thus far. 1- Role Even Strength Lines Asipi-Komarov-Gudnason Clyne-O’Callahan-Lazarus Kenzie-Tabootie-McKinley Komarov-O’Callahan-Gudnason Powerplay Lines Lazarus-Komarov-Gudnason Kenzie-O’Callahan-Clyne Penalty Kill Lines Komarov-Gudnason O’Callahan-Clyne ES: O’Callahan is centering the teams second even strength line between Clyne and Lazarus. The Aces coaching staff immediately put him into a top six role and surrounded him with wingers that he can produce with. Further, O’Callahan finds himself playing also on the fourth line with Komarov and Gudnason on his wings, two of the teams best forwards. PP: O’Callahan also centers the Aces second powerplay unit between Kenzie and Clyne. Getting powerplay minutes is important for a player like O’Callahan, who can use his speed and skill in space to create high quality scoring chances. PK: The coaching staff also finds O’Callahan defensively responsible enough to play on the second penalty kill unit with Clyne. He has been working hard in practice on his face-offs and positioning in hopes of keeping his spot on the PK unit. 2 - Statistics Through nine games of VHLM action, O’Callahan has posted the following stat line: 3 goals – 6 assists – 9 points – Minus 2 rating – 15 shots A point per game pace for the young rookie is nothing to sneeze at, but looking into his stats on a deeper level leaves something to be desired. First, his minus-two rating on a first place Vegas team is not a positive. For a team that scores a lot of goals, we would like to see his plus/minus rating increase moving forward. Second, 15 shots on goal is among the worst on the team. For comparison, Komarov has 76 shots on goal through nine games. This shows that despite posting a point-per-game pace, O’Callahan is not generating enough shots on net and his shooting percentage (20%) will certainly not be attainable on a regular basis. As he continues to put in work on the ice, look for these numbers to improve.

Name: Calder O’Callahan Position: Center Height; 6’0 Weight: 195lbs. Hometown: Edina, Minnesota US High School: Eden Prairie High The recent recipient of the Minnesota Mr. Hockey award, given to the state’s most outstanding senior high school hockey player, has officially declared for the S57 VHL Entry Draft. The smooth-skating center iceman recently signed on the dotted line to play for the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM for a one year, $1 million contract. O’Callahan comes from a great bloodline of hockey talent. His father, Jack, played seven seasons in the NHL for the Blackhawks and Devils and was part of the famous 1980 US Olympic team that defeated the Russian powerhouse. Calder, named after the first president of the NHL (Frank Calder), is looking to make a name for himself in the VHL. Prior to declaring for the VHL Draft, O’Callahan played three years at Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota where he put up impressive numbers. In 75 career high school games, he netted 65 goals and tallied 95 assists and led the state in points all three years. Widely considered the nation’s top high school talent, O’Callahan is looking to turn heads at the VHL level. Strengths: Skating: The first thing that sticks out when watching O’Callahan play is his skating ability. His edgework is second-to-none and uses his skating to create space against defenders. His straight line speed is also impressive and if you give him a step, he will blow by you in the blink of an eye. Playmaking: O’Callahan is a playmaking centerman, no doubt about it. He uses his aforementioned skating ability to create space and make plays all over the ice. The playmaking ability is primarily comprised of vision and passing. His vision on the ice is fantastic, he sees the game at a high level and the game seems to slow down for him when he has the puck. Leadership: The two-time captain at Eden Prairie is a natural leader. He leads by example with his dynamic play and non-stop motor, but also is a vocal leader who always looks to build team camaraderie amongst his teammates. Weaknesses Shot: Despite his dynamic skating and playmaking ability, he has room to improve when it comes to his shot. He never seems to beat a goalie outright with a shot and the majority of his goals seem to come from right in front of the net or breakway type plays. This is an area he is actively working on improving as he takes his game to the VHL. Physical Play: He doesn’t necessarily shy away from the physical aspect of the game, but he has been known to get off his game when the opposing team focus on playing physical game against him. The VHL and VHLM will have bigger, stronger players so he will need to learn to adapt to this style of play if he wants to have success at this level. Defense: O’Callahan is an offense-first player and always has been. He has been able to hide his defensive weaknesses with his tremendous offense game. However, playing at this level of competition will challenge him to be a more rounded, two-way player. Expect coaches to spend some extra time with him in this area.

Calder O'Callahan Signs with Las Vegas August 7, 2017 The one-time Minnesota High-School standout has officially signed his first professional contract with the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM. The VHLM, a developmental league for the VHL, consists of five teams and many of them had expressed interest in signing O’Callahan. After weighing his options, he felt like Vegas team fit him the most and gave him the best opportunity to win. “It was a difficult decision. All of the teams that I talked to had interesting and unique pitches for how they were going to use me and where they saw me fitting in moving forward. I think the conversations I had with the Vegas GM were fantastic and he had a true vision for me on that team. I have met a few of the players so far and they all have been extremely welcoming. With this decision behind me, my focus right now is to continue to develop as a player.” O’Callahan is a dynamic center with tremendous skating and playmaking ability. The former winner of the “Minnesota Mr. Hockey” award, given to the most outstanding senior high school hockey player in the state, will definitely open some eyes around the VHLM.
