Josh got a reaction from CrookedAnt in S85 Trade Deadline & Theme Week
    Hello @Members!

It's been an exciting few weeks of S85, and we're at the point where we celebrate Theme Week!

Additionally, that means that the Trade Deadline is Monday, October 3rd at 3pm EDT. This also means that anyone wishing to re-create for the S87 draft can do so starting at midnight that same day.

    ---

For this season, we've decided on a theme of:

It's a pretty general theme and you have plenty of creative freedom. For anyone who might need them, we can give you some ideas for your Point Tasks. For our graphics folks, consider creating a sig for a current GM, or make a graphic celebrating a GM's accomplishments. For our writers or podcasters, discuss what makes a good GM, or reflect on your old GMs and what they did that you appreciated and enjoyed. There's plenty of opportunity for reflection and appreciation for the group of members that do their best to give you all a great player experience.

To earn your Theme Week TPE, write an article, create a graphic, or record a podcast with some connection to “GMs / Team Management”.

    ---

In order to claim the theme week bonus of 6 Uncapped TPE, simply submit your Themed PT (Graphic, Media Spot, or 6-TPE Podcast), and claim it as normal. After claiming the PT portion, you can use the same link, and claim the uncapped portion as follows: Claim Uncapped > Other > Doubles Week. (Note: you do not need to post your link in this thread to claim either portion of TPE).

Make sure to tag your articles with “theme week” so we can collect all the great work in one easy-to-find spot.
If you have already submitted a Point Task for this week, or are in the midst of claiming a multi-week Media Spot/Podcast, you may still submit a Theme Week PT this week, and claim the capped portion on the next available week, following your multi-week claim.

Also, if you have a single job that pays 6+, you may claim the theme week bonus as long as you complete your duties for the week. If you are in the EFL or SBA and have completed their most recent Media Week, you may use that to claim the Uncapped theme week bonus, but a PT must be completed this week in order to claim the Capped portion, whether that is completed here or through Affiliate Welfare.

Note: Only players who are S86 or older may claim the theme week bonus.

    --

You're reading a builder's Hall of Fame article, but that's not why Josh is being inducted. Confused? Let's talk about that!

At the time of his builder induction, Josh didn't have a single player inducted into the Hall of Fame. Not for lack of quality, though. As we look around the inducted builders, we quickly notice that Josh is the new guy on the block.

The only user who was in a similar position to Josh was Beaviss. Both were part of the VHL for 20 seasons until their induction to the builders' Hall of Fame. And if that's the comparison, it's hard to argue against his worthiness.

So let's take a tour of Josh's accomplishments in the VHL. As a player, GM or, simply put, a blue.

Josh's career as a player is two and a half men long. Jake, Roque, and David are the three wise men.

Let's start from the beginning... better yet, let's skip the beginning. Jake Davis' career wasn't one to reminisce on. And Josh took that personally, quickly recreating with Roque and turning the defenseman into one of the highest earners ever. That personal success, however, didn't turn into team accolades, and Roque's induction to the Hall of Fame came seasons after Josh's.

Nowadays, Josh is completing his trifecta. After playing with a winger and defenseman, it's now David Davis' time to protect Davos' net from trouble. Individually, David is on track to be one of the highest earners in the Goaltending position. But the ever-elusive Continental Cup and Aidan Shaw Trophy can't come soon enough. Could we see another of Josh's player careers go by without an entry into the Hall of Fame?

So Josh's induction isn't related to his players. Could it be about his General Manager experience?

    Nope.

Josh's GM career has had two stops, one in the VHLM and another in the VHL. From season 64 to season 69 (Noice!), Josh led the now-defunct Yukon Rush in the VHLM. And from season 73 to season 80, he had the chance to lead the new VHL expansion team, the Los Angeles Stars.

Let's look at the 6 seasons with the Rush. In that period, the Rush made the playoffs for 4 seasons and made the Founders' Cup Finals in season 68. They always seemed competitive, had multiple players with individual honors throughout the seasons, but never managed to win it all. They always missed out for some reason, and although we can't speak highly of Josh's tenure in Yukon, we also can't belittle it.

A couple of seasons go by, and we have new expansion teams entering the VHL. Chicago, London, Los Angeles, and Warsaw needed new people at their helm. And Josh was selected to begin Los Angeles' path in the VHL.

The inception of a franchise is never easy, and Josh can attest to that. His seasons in Los Angeles passed a bit too fast, and he couldn't find a place at the top with his team. Apart from a couple of seasons where he extracted the very best from two of his players. Sigard Gunnar in season 73 and Alex Letang in season 79.

Ultimately, Los Angeles was a bottom-to-the-middle-of-the-pack team during Josh's tenure, and 3rd place was their better finish in the regular season. They did turn a bit more competitive in the end. But even with 3 playoff appearances, they never made it past the Conference Finals.

What was missing on Josh's GM tenures? His players were still great, but his teams seemed to lack that championship star. Could it be that every other position Josh held had something to do with it? Perhaps.

It's no secret that Josh's induction to the Hall of Fame is mainly due to his work as a blue. But that doesn't make him less worthy of it. Au contraire.

While managing his players and teams, Josh's work spanned across the VHL like an octopus. It's difficult to absorb the amount of work and sheer tenacity needed, but let's try. From the top!

Of course, Josh didn't enter the VHL the usual way. So it was no wonder he got his first job only two weeks after joining the league. He was now the Fantasy guy.

Less than 6 months in, Josh got the Yukon Rush GM job. A couple of months go by, and Josh is now the commissioner and Fantasy guy of the World Cup.

So it's been a year for Josh in the VHL. He has created a great player, manages a VHLM team, works as the Fantasy guy, and has been commissioner of an off-season tournament. All this while working with Will on the Portal we now know today.

What now? What's the next step? It was time to take over the VHL Portal project. Josh was now the leader of the VHL Portal and Player Store, and his work started to shift to shades of blue. He left the Fantasy Zone but started working as a Simmer for the league.

It's a year and a half after joining the league, and the blue Josh is on fire. His work as VHL Commissioner starts, the VHL Portal has more features than ever, the VHL App is in its Beta test, and Josh is about to create his second player, Roque Davis. Life is good, but we haven't reached 2020 yet - which, in hindsight, is not all that bad.

The beginning of 2020 is bleak. COVID is starting to hit, and Josh is ending his tenure in Yukon without the accolades. He continues his work as Administrator and issues a change regarding the Press Conferences and their pay. Josh continues his tenure as WC Commissioner but adds the WJC too. He's now the league's full-time off-season Commissioner/Simmer... until he decides to hire new people in mid-2020.

At this time, his tenure in Los Angeles is about to start. Again a GM, Josh adds that to his responsibilities. GM, Simmer, Administrator, and the Portal and App updates keep rolling.

At this point, Josh is stretched thin, and his activity is blue. Who can blame him? The player's career is now background noise, and his tenure in Los Angeles is ending. Trivia has now been moved to the Portal, so it's more accessible than ever. Administrator, Simmer, Commissioner, and VHL Portal/App overseer. Whatever those positions require him to do, that's how Josh impacts the VHL.

In his induction, it was said that "history suggests that often active members are past their peak at the time of a Builder induction." It was also stated that Josh could be one of the exceptions.

Well, I have another reason in mind. You can't peak if you stay at the top.

Josh, for an incredible career in the VHL so far, congratulations! As a new guy in the community, thank you! For all your hard work and the changes, you have brought to the VHL. It is truly incredible and a pleasure to enjoy what you (and others) have built throughout the years.

    Preface
(edited from the player's own Junior Review)

How do you become a hockey player if you are born in a country where it’s almost impossible to find snow? For players with Portuguese ancestry, that first step is to move to Canada. At the young age of 7, Roque Davis was showing early signs of athleticism and enjoyed playing soccer. But not long after landing in Calgary, Roque had to ask a question to his parents, “All of the kids at school play hockey! Can I play?”

Early on in his development, the coaches let his parents know that Roque would be something special. Something most coaches will do to motivate the parents to keep their kids engaged and focused. But this time, not only were those coaches doing that, but they found a diamond in the rough. This article proves that.

     The VHLM

First of all, starting your career in S69? Nice!

Getting 33 Points in 40 Games as a late season Free Agent signing? Pretty nice, too!

That late push with Mississauga set the tone for Davis' illustrious VHLM career. Regarded as one of the top prospects available, he was picked 6th OA by the San Diego Marlins - and, boy, was he worth the pick! The Marlins finished 2nd in the regular season, much to his efforts. The S70 Marlins still, to this day, hold an immense amount of records. Notoriously, the Marlins scored 1129 Points that season, and Roque's accounted for 154 of those.

They did lose in the semi-finals to the Ottawa Lynx. But that team had come 3rd in the regular season, only a couple of points behind the Marlins. But winning has to be the goal every time a team steps on the ice, and the Marlins got close but couldn't reach. Unfortunately, this was a sign of what was coming for Roque.

His play didn't go unnoticed, and that season with took home three different trophies. The Vladimir Boomchenko Trophy (given to the player with the most assists in the regular season), the Ethan Osborne (given to the player with the most points in the regular season), and the Ryan Sullivan, the latter given to the VHLM's Top Defenseman.

    A Strong Start

As expected by the Mock Drafts around the VHL, with the 1st OA selection, Riga picked Kyl Oferson, who had the task of replacing newly retired Ryan Kastelic. With the 2nd OA, HC Davos didn't flinch at the opportunity to add a talent like Roque Davis. He was to be the center stone of the rebuilding Davos squad and a great one at it. Expectations were high for the Portuguese, but after everything he'd been through, he was already used to it.

The first two seasons of Roque's career were still played on a VHL with 12 teams, but that didn't matter. Davos wasn't a great team, as they had to build a new roster from scratch during that off-season. Even so, Roque managed to assert himself in the league and got recognized for it. Roque was selected as the most outstanding rookie and took the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy home. But there was more. Even as a rookie, Roque was awarded the Alexander Valiq Trophy, an award given to the top offensive defenseman in the VHL.

Roque's second season in the VHL saw Davos make a jump forward. After finishing S71 at the bottom of the league, with 55 points and 13 points behind the penultimate team, Davos got better... way better. They finished season 72 with 77 points. That's a 40% increase, the best in the league that season. Roque got better that season, maybe not in the usual stats, but he improved as a team leader and a character on the ice. He scored only 4 more points but went from -18 to a +22 (plus/minus) on what still only was a regular team. This season, there were no accolades, but there were playoffs, and that's even better. But Davos wasn't experienced enough and got swept in the first round by the Riga Reign, who won the Continental Cup.

The third season in the VHL came with 4 new expansion teams and another HC Davos regression, which unfortunately also took Davis hostage. This was one of the worst seasons of Davis' career. Davos ended up making the playoffs, but it was only to be swept again in the first round, which was now a wildcard round. We skip ahead.

    Regular Season Stats
    73 (DAV), 72 Games Played, 16 Goals, 42 Assists, 58 Points, +7 Plus/Minus, 227 Shots, 165 Hits, 125 Shots Blocked, 3 Game Winning Goals, 2 Powerplay Goals
    72 (DAV), 72 Games Played, 15 Goals, 58 Assists, 73 Points, +22 Plus/Minus, 183 Shots, 134 Hits, 141 Shots Blocked, 1 Game Winning Goals, 3 Powerplay Goals

    Reaching The Peak

S74 saw Roque Davis getting back to the business of being Roque Davis. Davos improved residually, but Davis' efforts were reminiscing of his earlier seasons. We saw him freely roaming the ice, passing, scoring, hitting, and blocking. A truly versatile player. It seemed like everything was in place, but Davos played in a stacked European Conference and finished 6th. 5 points behind 3rd, 1 point behind 4th, and tied for 5th place... Davos still missed out on the playoffs.

The season ended with no playoffs or accolades. Davis was now an established veteran in the league and wouldn't take this anymore. There were greener pastures on the other side, and it wasn't because he wasn't watering his own.

He moved to Moscow, eager to prove himself. Keen to prove he wasn't the problem in Davos. Was he right? You tell me. In S75, Moscow made the playoffs after finishing 4th. Davos missed the playoffs in 6th. In S76, Moscow led the league, and Roque had the best season of his career. Davos was dead last on a season performance that still stands in the Top 10 of their worst seasons.

Davis' tenure in Moscow must be measured by their accomplishments in the playoffs. That's what he went there for and where the Moscow team was built to play.

In S75, as they finished 4th meant they'd be facing the 5th on the European Conference standings, the London United. Moscow only outscored London by 2 points in the regular season, but that series showed who the better team was. And most importantly, who the best player was. Even with Erik Killinger, a fellow S71 draftee, on the ice, Roque Davis was a step above. In the Conference Semi-Finals, Moscow met the Helsinki Titans... and what a series that one was! To 7 games, it went, and each of them was worthy of the playoffs. And again, repeating his play from the wildcard round, Roque Davis was the best player on the ice, even with another draft classmate on the ice, Ola Vikingstad. As Moscow reached the Conference Finals, we could see the motivation in their eyes. After all, they had just beaten the 1st-place Titans, but perhaps that wasn't the best thing in the world. Malmo explored the cracks in the Menace's game, something we hadn't seen before, but maybe because they weren't there. And so, they beat Moscow in 6 games and went on to win the Continental Cup.

S76's playoff run wasn't as glamorous as the previous. After a great regular season that saw them top the table with 112 Points, they had more trouble than what would have been expected to overcome the Helsinki Titans in the first round. It took them seven games to finish that series, and they would have a much stronger opponent in the Conference Finals. If the 112 Points scored by the Menace were impressive, the 110 points that the Aloe Dear-led Predators scored didn't stay far behind. And thus, Moscow was beaten in 7 games, and Warsaw went on to fight for the Continental Cup, where they lost to Chicago.

    After-hours

Two more seasons had passed, and Roque Davis was now entering the twilight of his illustrious career. Yet again, he found himself in a situation where major career decisions had to be made.

The dominance of Moscow was coming to an end, and Roque knew that, so he started scouting the market. He had two years left in his career, but his S76 performance had gotten him three different individual awards, two of them new. He was awarded the Alexander Valiq Trophy for the second time in his career. But added the Alexander Beketov (Assist Leader) and the Sterling Labatte (Top Defenseman) Trophies.

He decided to sign with the Los Angeles Stars. Not an awful decision since staying in Moscow would lead him to be bottom of the league for the last two years of his career, but also not the best choice. This moved him to the North American Conference for the first time in his career, moving him closer to home, but his performances weren't up to par. Both seasons in Los Angeles gave him career lows if you disregard that awful S73 Davos campaign.

Season 77 saw the Stars finishing 4th in the North American Conference. They finished the season with the best defense in the conference but at the same time lost too many points at home. The consistency just wasn't there, and it was felt in their playoff run. They started hot, winning the Wildcard series against the 5th-placed Vancouver Wolves in 4 games. Managed to stay that way against 1st place Chicago, sweeping them in the Conference Semi-Finals. But when the going became tough, they were no Ford F-150 and were swept by the Seattle Bears, who went on to lift the Cup.

Season 78 was the sequel to the previous season. The Stars didn't manage to improve, while their star collapsed. Playing, by far, the worst season of his career on an underperforming squad, the Los Angeles Stars didn't make the playoffs. And the last game Roque Davis ever played was an OT thriller against the worst team in the league that season.

    Epilogue

Roque Davis' story started with an underdog for the protagonist. In the beginning, you were almost rooting for him, hoping his move between countries would go almost flawlessly.

After a while, you understood that Roque was, in fact, remarkable and that his move to Canada wasn't a handicap on his development but a gift that allowed him to discover his passion.

When Roque was at the top of his game, you stopped rooting for him and started wishing for the opposite. He must have been given everything, so let's not make it any easier on him. Let's make him work. And work he did.

Roque Davis' 11th in TPE*, at the moment this article is being written. He has individual accolades but will not be able to compete for a Continental Cup ever again. Of those 10 players above him, only Hunter Hearst Helmsley has also not won a Continental.

Hence, Roque Davis deserves this spot in the Hall of Fame, and it doesn't matter that it took him 6 seasons to get here. His story is built on grit. Being ever so close to achieving the ultimate goal but never being able to do it. Yet he never quit, and he always gave us his whole.

That's what we'll remember him by. That's his legacy.

The 2nd overall pick of S76 has secured his place as his draft's finest with a well deserved first ballot induction. Sandstrom may have never made the finals, but he was in the playoffs every season of his career, dragging Prague and then Riga to contention as he aged like a fine wine. A slower start as he struggled to break the point-per-game mark for a few seasons could have derailed Sandstrom's career like many promising defencemen before, but he hit another gear halfway through his VHL career and finished his career with 3 straight 100-point seasons and a slew of trophies to secure his place in the Hall. @Acydburn

    2x All-VHL First Team (S71, S76)

Another former 2nd overall pick was on the way out just as Sandstrom entered the league, Davis had to wait longer to join the Hall of Fame, perhaps because his best achievements came before his last few seasons. His offensive stats might pale at face value, but Davis played in a much more defensive era and was probably a more clearly offensive-minded player. His rookie season included a Valiq and very much channelled the spirit of the great Alexander Valiq, as he quarterbacked a fairly lacklustre Davos team. Crowning glory would follow after a move to Moscow to solidify his place amongst the elite defencemen of the era and although he never made the finals either, it was not for a want of trying. @Josh

    Builder Induction
After a season hiatus we also have Builder induction in S84. Some VHL members shine brightly for a brief moment and disappear without a trace, others slowly move through the positions taking in all the league has to offer. But several Builder inductions are very much lifetime achievement awards, recognising the sheer consistency of some members who have carved out a niche over many years of the VHL - and their success is in being an example of the many ways to approach the league. @solas perfectly fits that bill, coming into the VHL back in S20 with his first gen Turd Ferguson, and working his way through the decades with countless players, including the Hall of Famers Theo Axelsson, Lukas Muller, and most recently Jean Pierre Camus. Solas has never held a significant leadership position in the league and yet any of his teammates will confirm he has been an integral part of many a successful locker room, while contributing to a number of key league initiatives, including the long-running VHL Magazine and indeed some Hall of Fame articles. He may operate in the shadows often but today gets the recognition his tenure absolutely deserves!

    Congratulations Josh, Acyd, and Solas!

    Good news everyone!

As you might have seen here, @McWolf is stepping away from the green team. What you likely didn't know is that @diamond_ace  will also be stepping down this off-season after an incredible tenure. I don't think I could possibility summarize how much D_A has done for the league better than his Builder article, so I'll include that for you all to peruse. Please join me in saying, thank you @diamond_ace !

What this does mean is we have the unique privilege of adding 2 new VHLM Commissioners at the same time! After reviewing the list of candidates that had put themselves forward for the position, we have decided on hiring: @Spartan and @Gustav!

Congratulations to the both of you!
