rjfryman reacted to N0HBDY in S75 Reaper Roster and Where They Are Now Pt.1
Hello again, it’s been a while since I’ve written an article, or something of this nature. But since it’s the offseason I need some extra tpe . So I thought as one of the things I could write about, which will be split into a lot of parts I’m not realizing, is about the championship team I was apart of during my time in the VHLM with the S75 Philadelphia Reapers and where they are today, almost a year later. (At the time GM’d by the O so great @DMaximus )

So how this will go is I will put the player, their regular season stats, their playoff stats, a brief summary of their player, and their movement throughout their career.

First off the full roster consisting of a grand 22 players on the roster is right here:

In no particular order we start off from the top of the list with center, Isau DaMoose.

Not the reapers top player, drafted 14th overall in the S75 dispersal draft and after spending nearly 2 full seasons in the VHLM he’s one of those players you wouldn’t expect to turn into a solid pick and rise above most of his draft class. Averaging 0.69… point per game (nice) during the regular season and 0.8 points per game in the playoffs DaMoose was a reliable player and good for depth when it came to needing him. Finishing positive in the +/- category for both regular season and playoffs, obtaining a decent amount of shots, and low penalty minutes, I think further proves the point of him being very reliable and I must add now, a team player.

After S75 DaMoose moved on to the team that had drafted him before the season 38th overall, the Riga Reign, where he has remained throughout his entire career.. His first 2 seasons in the big leagues seemed to only be him warming up because afterwards in his next 3 season he would average, 1.12points per game, 1.01 points per game, and 1.15 points per game. Drastically increasing his total shots per season and keeping low penalty minutes. Truly sticking to the team player that he is. The almost 2 full season VHLM’er has since turned into an 1112 tpe player and nears the end.

Great job on a very nice career being had by DaMoose @Eynhallow , who is still an active member (big shocker).

The next player on the list is Center Robert Bouchard.

One of the Reapers top point recorders, draft 7th overall in the S75 dispersal draft, and spent just under half a season in the VHLM the previous season with the Minnesota Storm. It was obvious that this was going to be one of the reapers face of the franchise players and he certainly proved himself to be.  Getting 109 points during the regular season to make an average of 1.51 points per game, and getting a perfect 1 points per game in the playoffs. Though a talented player he recorded more assists than goals, most noticeably in the S75 playoffs with just 3 of his 15 points being goals and the other 12 being assists. A truly selfless player that could win the Reapers face-offs like non other, create scoring opportunities, and occasionally batting some into the back of the net himself.

After S75 Bouchard went to the VHL to the team that had draft him 24th overall in the S75 VHL Entry Draft, the Prague Phantoms. He has certainly shown his loyalty and dedication to being a “team-first” player because since S75 he has remained with the Phantoms every season. Bouchard has still not shown any decline in his play, in fact he is still rising after most recently having his record season in the VHL with 109 points. Once again with assists outnumbering goals in the goal:assist ratio. Taking the first two seasons to warmup to the league and then having his breakout season in S78 averaging 1.02 points per game, then 1.34 points per game in S79, and 1.51 points per game in his record season S80. Bouchard is at 1071 TPE and also nears the end of his career in the next couple of seasons.

Once again great job to Bouchard and the user behind him @Gaikoku-hito and remaining active throughout the entire time.

Once again onto the next player, there will be some repetitiveness because this is a long list lol, anyways the next player is center Kjell Nilsson.

Another player seemingly adding to the depth of the Reapers roster, drafted 52nd Overall in the S75 dispersal draft. Nilsson played basically a full season with the Saskatoon Wild the season before playing in 70 total games. After being drafted to the Reapers he multiplied his points by a factor of 2.5, going from 19 points the previous season to 48 total points the next season. In the playoffs that season for the Reapers he would record 4 total points, but remain positive in the +/- category and only record 8 penalty minutes that postseason. Though a small factor in the Reapers recipe for victory he was very much still there with his much impressive puck handling skills and scoring ability during the few opportunities he got.

After that season Nilsson would have a monster breakout season going from 49 total points the previous season to 143 the next! Philadelphia would make the playoffs again but not go as far as the season before. After S76 he would continue to play for the Reapers recording 99 total points in 64 games, then at the trade deadline he was given to the Las Vegas Aces where he would play the rest of the season and record 6 total points in 8 games for the Aces. The 52nd overall pick turned into a true standout player shortly after his draft season. Then in S77 at the conclusion of the Aces playoff run of 9 games, recording 11 total points. Nilsson would retire his player and the D.C Dragons who had spent their 51st overall pick back in S75 on Nilsson would end up never receiving him. Kjell Nilsson retired with exactly 250 TPE.

A great career was had during his time in the VHLM and it’s sad that after the S77 season his user @glass would go inactive shortly after creating another player and hasn’t been back since June 2021 for what I’m sure was just a quick glance before they closed the forum tab.

The next player features one of the VHL’s early time members @sixersfan594 ,with the a center by the name of Jivere Zolnek.

One of the many Reapers players that they had signed at the trade deadline the season before as waivers that would turn into draft selections for the Reapers right after. Drafted 78th Overall during the S75 dispersal draft to the Philadelphia Reapers Zolnek would add to the depth of the reapers, contributing minimally for the Reapers during the regular season with 13 total points in 72 games, but being a deciding factor for some games in the postseason with 10 total points in 15 games, with 1 goal of his being a game winning goal. In a sudden playoff jolt the player averaging 0.18 points per game in the regular season would become a 0.66… points per game player in the postseason. After taking 72 games to get a measly 13 points, he would almost reach that points total in just 15 games during the postseason.

After the S75 season and playoff run Jivere Zolnek would go on to the VHL where the 78th overall pick in the VHLM draft would go 16th overall to the Vancouver Wolves in the VHL entry draft right after his championship. Surely taking his time to heat up in the league, like cooking a pizza in the microwave the first 3 seasons he spend in the VHL he would only average 0.13 points per game, 0.45 points per game, and 0.65 points per game. Then would absolutely destroy his trend of going upwards by getting 112 total points in the S79 regular season for the Vancouver Wolves, and 133 total points in the S80 regular season for the Vancouver Wolves. Zolnek has remained loyal to the Wolves so far during his career and has a total of 619 TPE.

Great job to Jivere Zolnek and his user @sixersfan594 for showing that no matter the amount of TPE some of the other big dogs have, it’s still possible to be an outstanding player. Whether you knew it or not @Sixersfan594 has remained active.

Next up maybe a more recognizable name, or from at least a more recognizable family. Center, Asher Reinhart.

I would like to call him a depth player, I’m also uncertain of how he even got onto the Philly roster but his name is on the trophy so anyways here it goes. Asher joined the Reapers late into the season and managed to claw his was onto the roster for 2 of the Reapers remaining games in the regular season. Recording literally nothing at all, likely seeing no ice time at all. Then into the playoffs Asher played a full 15 games like all others on the Reapers roster, recording 2 total points in 15 games played. With mediocre stats but staying positive in the +/- category (barely) Asher like it or not did contribute, very minorly for the reapers, but “helped”.

After the playoff run he was apart of, Asher would go 4th overall in the S76 dispersal draft to the Houston Bulls and prove himself to be a worthy player recording 84 total points in 72 games. A major improvement from his performance the season before. Asher Reinhart would be a driving factor in the Houston Bulls campaign in the playoffs but ultimately come up empty handed. Asher was then drafted 6th Overall in the VHL S77 entry draft by the Toronto Legion. Asher, being a younger member of the team has played a season less in the VHL compared to some of his other teammates, but is warming up fast and becoming quite a standout player. In his first 2 season he would average 0.44 points per game in S77 and 0.52 points per game in S78. Then would have his breakout season for the Legion recording 89 total points in 72 games, averaging 1.24 points per game in S79, and continue his trend upwards by recording 118 total points in 72 games an average of 1.64 points per games in the S80 regular season.

With plenty of time left in his career Asher will likely continue to be a standout player for the Toronto legion where he has remained loyal to since being drafted there. Congrats to sir @rjfryman on the success of his player’s career so far and I am excited to see how the rest of his career pans out.

I just want to first start off by thanking @InstantRockstar for his work with the VHLE helping us get off the ground and being an excellent GM during his time with us. We are excited to see him get a VHL GM job but he will be missed. He was an excellent asset to the VHLE and I know that he will do great in the VHL.

I also want to thank all the applicants for this job for taking the time and energy to apply and take the time to write what they did and I encourage each of them to apply again later because it was a tough decision.

With all that preamble done the text you all are excited to read. Rome's new GM is:

So I've been thinking about this more and if we go ahead (which seems to be the consensus). We would need said players to declare they're skipping the M to join the E.

@Josh Would it be possible to add a flag to players saying something like skip M draft or E draft eligible, something along those lines. That way we can change the E draft query (and possibly the M) to include /exclude these players (thinking of a union with the current query or just an or statement in the case of the E and a just skip M draft = no for the M )?

@rjfryman and I can manually set it if a player declares, that way we don't have to bother you to add one offs all the time.

rjfryman reacted to Beketov in The Great Artist Formerly Known as Meta Debate
Gonna use this post to outline an announcement. I’m starting it on mobile and likely won’t have time to fully finish it right now so the formatting will get fixed later and it’ll probably get posted before it’s complete. I’ll tag you all when it’s fully ready.

    —————

Down with the Meta, Up with Hybrid attributes

    Hello [members]!

As I’m sure you’re all aware by now the VHL has a meta problem. If you aren’t aware…. where have you been? I’ll explain though: at its core the “meta” means building a player with max scoring (as well as ideally max Defense) and absolutely no passing, or as little passing as you can possibly manage. This tricks the engine into take an insane amount of shots rather than passing and more shots means more goals. An individual player doing this has minimal impact on the engine as a whole but an entire team doing it is not only salary efficient (since not much TPE is needed) but can also be very beneficial to that team. As more and more players have started to discover this, more and more teams have become to adopt this “meta” strategy, intentionally or otherwise.

The SHL discovered this a few years ago and completely changed engines to eliminate it. Before I get into our fix I want to explain something to eliminate a misconception: we did know about this and we weren’t just ignoring it in hopes that it wouldn’t be a problem. At the time it was discovered we ran tests and found the impact to be lesser with our engine version and roster make up. It was present but not extreme and combined with re-rolls being much harder to acquire here we thought it best not to rock the boat, believing changes would be more detrimental to league health than the problem which, at that point, had not really come up in the VHL.

Unfortunately times changed and as we know the meta has been on our doorstep for a bit now. That is why the [BOG] has been working very hard the last few seasons to come up with a solution that would not only eliminate the meta without changing engines (something that would be nuclear to the portal and unwanted if it can be avoided) and ideally while also improving build diversity, roster makeup, and league enjoyment.

Therefore, I present to you, your new VHL player Attributes:

"But Beketov..." I hear you asking "if we aren't changing engines and we can't change the attributes inside of STHS how do we have new attributes?"

Good question theoretical member! The short answer is: we don't. The above are the attributes you as members will be seeing but they are not the attributes STHS will be seeing. We are calling these hybrid attributes and their job is to give us more control over builds without directly limiting what can and can't be added to. They work by spreading out the TPE placed into them into different STHS attributes at different ratios. Specifically the ratios that are used are:

I know that looks like a lot of numbers and attributes but I promise it's not as complicated as it seems at first glance.

Essentially 1 point into a Hybrid attribute = a ratio of 1 or more STHS attributes. For example adding 1 point to offensive vision will add 0.3 points to Passing and 0.3 points to scoring (this sounds quite low but I promise it works out). To make it so that this doesn't completely break how much TPE is needed for a build all values will be rounded down (since STHS cannot accept decimals) but the points aren't lost, they simply aren't used until you hit a new whole number.

These values can be more easily tweaked over time if a new meta develops and give us granular control over the STHS attributes in a way that simply having an update scale never could. In the specific case of the meta the eagle eyed among you have probably already noticed that there’s no way to achieve max scoring without adding to passing. In fact if you max all the scoring attributes you will end up around 64 passing (if I remember correctly) by association. This was the crux of the meta fix, build attributes together in a way that making a purely “meta” player is impossible.

The additional bonus of course is build diversity, or at least that's the hope. I'm hitting this explanation over the head a bit and I promise I'll stop soon but I wanted to touch on this very quickly because I can see the comments now from that theoretical member again, "couldn't we have achieved the same thing by adding archetypes or simply a required gap between passing and scoring?" Yes, theoretical member, we could have. However we chose to take longer to make this than go one of those routes because the VHL's attributes have always been based around adding what you want, where you want. We do not have limits on specific attributes or requirements like gap; it would be easier but that doesn't inherently make it better. [Beaviss] originally came up with an early version of this a few years back (so credit to him) and I shot it down because I didn't think it made sense at the time. However when looking at all of this again it seemed to fit perfectly. Fix the meta and add a whole new world of build theory crafting. We don't have any new actual attributes but having different ways to get things up and having to balance certain trade offs inherently creates more opportunity to diversify. You can try this out for yourselves since [Spartan] has graciously simplified our testing spreadsheet here [link] (originally designed by [Enorama], credit where due because I certainly couldn't do all that math) which you can use to start designing your build right now before this all comes into play.

Which leads me out of the meat of this announcement and into the nitty gritty details: Implementation and what it all means. First off, this is going into effect for the start of S83 which will likely mean extending the off season slightly because we need to accommodate the fact that every skater in the league will be re-rolled down to TPA + banked after depreciation is run, which will happen early. This is done so that you can re-apply your TPE into the new attributes as you please. You can choose to change your build if you'd like or you can try and build exactly the same, the choice is ultimately yours. Inactive players will be re-rolled by their GM's and any players not re-rolled by the start of the season will be retired.

We recognize this is a large change though and builds may not be perfectly finalized even with the extra tools and preparation time. For that reason we will be offering a 3 season window (ending at the start of S86) in which you will be able to re-roll your player again for free. Everyone will be able to do this once regardless of if they have previously used the paid re-roll or not.

We do also recognize that this is a WC off-season as well as the other usual off season tournaments and those will not be affected. We will download a ratings file for them the last day before everyone is reset and run the tournaments off of that file. You may have noticed by now that none of those attributes above and nothing I have said thus far relates to goalies; that is because goalies shall remain untouched for now. They will not be re-rolled or affected in any way at this time. If changes to their attributes need to be made in the future we shall do so but for now we want to gather data without adjusting them.

The update scale and depreciation will remain unchanged, again at least for now. From our testing depreciation should be roughly the same difficulty to fight as before for the higher TPE players and should be slightly easier for the lower TPE players. Additionally the update scale does not appear to require changing and will operate in exactly the same way as before with 1 caveat: attributes will start at 0 and go to 99 instead of the 40-99 that the VHL has ran with for 82 seasons. This only applies to the hybrid attributes with the ones inside STHS still having a baseline of 40. The update scale for 0-70 will remain at 1 TPE per point. The process of updating will also remain unchanged however it will look slightly different. We will be upgrading the update page to showcase not only why points go into your hybrid attributes but also the effect of your STHS attributes. It is worth noting, however, that there will be disheartening moments in this on occasion. Because of how the ratios work and the rounding down there will be times where you add a point and see nothing change. Again I would like to clarify that every point added does get counted, it may just not be enough to push you over the rounding threshold. The TPE tool shall also be adjusted accordingly to help people figure out their builds and see exactly what adding to everything does. It will work the same as the above link but be a lot less manual.

I recognize this is a long explanation, a lot of words, and a lot to take in. It is not a decision we made lightly but it is a decision we are excited about. It should hopefully fix a lot of player attribute problems we have been facing in one move and allow the league to grow without destroying everything we have built with STHS. This will allow our attributes to be closer to the expectation of the engine without suppressing the creativity to do as you please, it will put an end to the meta build, it will make for an increase in build diversity, and it will allow the VHL to continue to thrive. Please know that we will be keeping an eye on things over the next few seasons as, regardless of the amount of testing we did, ultimately the biggest test in getting it in all of your hands. If we need to adjust sliders or change goalies or anything else we will do so. We ask that you all embrace this change and help to make the league better.

I'd probably need more context here, because I don't think we should mandate actives play ahead of inactives 10 times out of 10. We can't call it a competitive league and not only be able to call their players up Ina gray area, but then also dictate how they need to be making lines.

If an active is on the second line behind a inactive 100 TPA ahead of them, I don't really think that's a major issue. I think I'd trust our E GM's to increase an active's playing time if they weren't happy, but also because I think they know to prioritize their actives regardless.

If you have specific instances where it doesn't make much sense for an inactive to be ahead of an active or you think an active is being mistreated, I'd like to discuss those in detail.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it.

This is my notice to the league.

I am stepping down from my role as a VHL GM at the conclusion of Toronto's season (prior to the VHL Entry Draft).

Over the last few months my interest in the Victory Hockey League has taken a steep nose dive, and as a whole I've found myself growing more irritated with the league recently; it has become a chore to login. It's not fair to those on the Toronto Legion, the league or aspiring VHLM & VHLE GMs/the GM wishful that a sitting VHL GM struggles to visits the forum beyond seeing sim results, engaging in minor trades and rarely reading threads. As the GM of Toronto I had massive plans for the second rebuild I had put the team through, I had doubled down on my scouting and was drafting members I thought would be a good fit within our developing locker room. Normally I think someone here would say something along the lines of how they feel bad the Legion weren't in a position to compete, but I'll be leaving my replacement with what I consider a decent young roster.

    Continuing on:

I've come to terms with myself on numerous subjects; as I get older I've noticed I have less personal patience with people, which can absolutely be attributed to the daily stresses I've had [and continue] to endure over the last couple of years and the mental pressure of those stresses; I lack the tact to deal with people and the drama -- innocent or not -- that comes with the territory of being a general manager; and frankly I'm an older soul who has more controversial opinions on the practices and strategies within the VHL.

History will remember me as a mediocre GM with no accomplishments, I accept that, but at least I'll step away with my integrity intact (and the S69 Saskatoon Wild).

    Take care everyone,

    - Peace

    (To whom it may concern,

Doomsday was hired as my AGM recently, we all know he's a great person and has GM experience with the VHL. I'd like to recommend him for the position if he'd like it, but I understand that decision is not mine to make.)
