  1. SS Hornet Gets Used to Life As a VHLMer Not even 2 months after it wore skates for the first time, SS Hornet is already feeling at home on the North American rinks of the VHLM. Following a combine held in its hometown of Halifax, the steambot received a call from the Houston Bulls, inviting it to prove its worth over the course of 22 regular season games and, hopefully, a deep and successful playoff run. The playoff run ended abruptly in the semi-finals, where the Bulls got swept in 4 games by the overpowered and still undefeated Minnesota Storm, but it was a great experience for the Canadian center. In fact, Hornet has proven it can play alongside - and against - other VHL hopefuls as it scored 6 goals and notched 14 assists while maintaining a +22 differential in 22 games. Its 6 goals came from 66 shots, converting at a sub-par rate, but it could be attributed to either bad puck luck, inexperience or a mix of both. Hornet has no idea what's coming up for it next season, but it's ready to write the new chapter of its short sentient life. It is available in the next VHLM Draft, and is expected to be among the first couple of names called up to the stage, as it appears to be one of the best eligible sharpshooters. Great things are expected from the steambot next season.

  3. If you're going for a guy that finished second in both points and goals without playing with six 70-point scorers, vote Borwinn. The fact that Moscow is so stacked makes everyone hitting high point totals on Moscow a bit less exceptional imo
  4. Bobby Wyman reached 50 TPE +1
  5. Playoffs / Offseason 1. The first round of the playoffs is over. Minnesota and San Diego are the top 2 seeds and they have been ridiculously good throughout the season. Do you think they both make the finals? 2. Who do you think has the edge for the Skylar Rift Trophy, awarded to VHLM Playoff MVP, after 1 round? 3. What is the one attribute you'll improve the most this week? 4. Our own Izzy Valencia has finished 5th in the VHLM All-Stars Fastest Skater competition. Do you think you have what it takes to make this competiton or another one (Hardest Shot, Accurate Shots, Goalie Save Streaks) next season? 5. XBox, PlayStation or PC? 6. Recommend me a Netflix show (or from other streaming service).
  6. the list apparently skips on duplicate because I can't Excel, it seems. Frostbeard was tied with Aaltonen for 14th best forward with 147 points. I'll look for a way to fix this.
  7. The score for every player has been calculated, thanks to the magic of spreadsheet, and so were the groups' scores and standings. I'll wait until the offseason to post the actual results and set the TPE claim thread. Until then, I leave you all with the list of best players per position. 10. Playoff Previews First Round: Moscow Menace vs Prague Phantoms Season 70 playoffs haven’t even started yet, but there are already some storylines that make it one of the most interesting seasons in recent memory, one of which being that this the first time that both the D.C. Dragons and Prague Phantoms reach the playoffs after they joined the VHL in Season 68. However, it would be surprising to see the Phantoms come on top in their first-ever series, as they are facing the Victory Cup-winning Moscow Menace, arguably the favourite team to capture the Continental Cup, which would incidentally make it the first time they make the Continental Cup Finals. Road to the playoffs The Moscow Menace has just won the first Victory Cup - handed to the team with the best regular-season record - in franchise history and are not looking they are stopping their dominance anytime soon. They finished 1st in the whole league and earned home-ice advantage for the whole duration of the playoffs thanks to an impressive haul of 250 goals, giving them an average barely lower than 3.5 goals per game played, almost a full goal over the league average of 2.6. They have also been strong defensively, which allows them to hold a league-high 68-goal differential. On the other side of the playoffs spectrum, we have the Menace's opponents: the Prague Phantoms. They are the 8th team in - and actually finished behind the 5th-ranked North American Conference team - meaning that they hold the worst record among the 8 teams competing for the Season 70 Continental Cup. They are also the only team still playing with a negative goal differential, as they have allowed 24 more goals than they have scored. Why the Moscow Menace should win The Menace will win this best-of-7 series because simply put, their offence is firing on all cylinders. Their roster bears 4 of the league's 5 best scorers and a whopping 7 players over the point-per-game mark, including two-time Sterling Labatte Trophy winner - and this season's favourite to win it again - Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen. Jet Jaguar paced all skaters with 97 points, while Randoms' 44 goals outscored every other VHL players. Forwards Mat Tocco, Dan Baillie and Gritty, and defenseman Vladimir Pavlov round out the team's high octane core. In net, Raymond Bernard has been great for them too, holding a fine save percentage of .915% while notching a league-high 45 wins. It looks like there's nothing to stop this well-oiled machine, as they look forward to reaching their first-ever Continental Cup Finals and maybe be the first of the four 60's expansion teams to be crowned as VHL Champions. Why the Prague Phantoms should win The most encouraging fact for the Phantoms coming into this series against the Russian juggernaut is the fact that they were able to win both games played in Moscow during the regular season. They did lose their three games presented in Czechia, but it still shows that they can compete with them. The real question, however, is 'can they compete with them over a 7-game series'? Looking at both team's rosters on paper, the answer seems towards 'no'. Veteran Roll Fizzlebeef and youngsters Willie Dredge and Alex Pearson will need to catch fire and convert all their scoring opportunities if they want Prague to stand a chance. Their inexperienced defensive core of Cinnamon Block, Wolf Stansson Jr and Seabass Perrin will also need to step their game up to a whole other level to give a chance to recent free agent signing Brick Wahl to stop Jaguar and co. This series is as one-sided as it gets. Moscow are the favourites to win it all and, well, Prague would basically need some voodoo magic to incapacitate their opponents if they want to make it through to the second round. This is only a transition for the more recent expansion team though, as this is surely a first of many playoff appearances and they should enter the next couple of post-seasons with better odds of coming out with a Continental Cup. It should be a fun experience for their young core, though. Enjoy it! 11. Playoff Previews First Round: Helsinki Titans vs Riga Reign Season 70 is finally over and, after one of the wildest races to the finish line in recent memories, our playoff matchups are finally set in stone. This season, Beketov has decided to grant us an extra day between the end of the season and the beginning of the playoffs, giving the VSN team an extra day to write these playoff previews. So let’s kick it off with the European Conference First Round matchup between the Helsinki Titans and the Riga Reign. Road to the playoffs The Riga Reign enters the playoffs as the hottest team in the league, currently sitting on a 6-game win streak, which ended up pushing them from a borderline playoff team to the 2nd position in the European Conference. They have one of the best defence in the league, having only 183 goals throughout the season. On the other side of the rink will be the Helsinki Titans, who had a rough season and ended up making the playoffs with a mere haul of 75 points in 72 games, which rank them as the 8th best team in the league, tied with the Prague Phantoms and tied for the worst record among playoffs teams. Both European teams currently hold the longest playoff appearances streaks. Riga has been a part of the postseason dance every campaign since S62, while Helsinki’s streak started two seasons later in S64. Since the beginning of these two streaks, the two teams have met in the playoffs three times. The first two series between the two rivals came in Seasons 64 and 67, and basically reflect the same story: they played in the second round and the Titans won in 7 games both times, making their way to the Continental Cup Finals and losing twice. The last meeting went the other way, with Riga coming on top in 6 games in the first round and, ultimately, losing in the Continental Cup Finals. Why the Helsinki Titans should win Offence wins games, defence wins championships. Nice saying, right? While it might be right in some situations, I feel like the offence will drive this series. Because offence wins games, and you need to win four of these to win a series. And if one of these two teams has a dangerous offence, it’s the Helsinki Titans. Led by surefire Hall of Famer Julian Borwinn, the Titans offence ranks 3rd in the whole league with a total 207 goals. Borwinn is supported by a strong cast composed of long-time partner Kronos Bailey and new teammates Ben Hafkey and Erik Draven. Guillaume Fontenette is one year removed from his breakout season and just had another standout season from the blueline. In net, the 300-win man himself, Alexander Pepper, certainly hasn’t had the best campaign of his career, but he definitely is still a serviceable goaltender, and nothing excludes a great comeback performance from him when it truly matters. Why the Riga Reign should win The Titans' opponents are not pushovers either. The Reign are actually entering this first-round matchup with home-ice advantage, but I don’t trust their offence to keep up with the Titans’ explosive top line. Aston Martin and Pat Svoboda have, at times, struggled to keep up with franchise centre Ryan Kastelic, the latter being the only player on the team to crack the point-per-game mark in the last two campaigns. Alternatively, the area in which Riga has been strong all season - and the area that might ultimately give the team a chance to win this series - is their strong defensive game. Their blueline is led by a tandem of youngsters in Apollo Hackett and Lincoln Tate, who represent a great barrier in front of veteran netminder and possible Aidan Shaw Trophy-favourite Finn Davison. The Titans offence will really need to step it up if they want to score as much as the same rate as they did in the regular season, but I believe they continue their regular season domination on their Latvian rivals - they came on top 6 times in 8 regular-season meetings - and I believe they end up making their way to the European Conference Finals, where they’ll meet the winner of the Moscow Menace-Prague Phantoms series winner. This series will be tough for both teams. Unless STHS has a word to say about it, expect a long series, like the two teams, usually, offer fans. This series might also mark the end of the decade-long rivalry between the two European Conference teams, as their respective cores are retiring soon and the better days of both teams appear to be behind them. It might be the last shot at a Cup for both Helsinki and Riga before they need to rebuild or retool. 12. Future HOFer Lance Flowers @CowboyinAmerica Sadly enough, this is the end of the line for good ol' McWolf, as he has reached the career limit of 8 seasons. He retires without ever winning a best Defensive Defenseman award and, most importantly, without a Cup. His HoF status is now pretty much up in the air. I think he has a case to get in down the line, but definitely not as a first ballot. We will see how it goes. Thanks for the kind words!
