    Game Discussion

The trade deadline is coming up tomorrow and it's become clear where each team now fits in.  In big news, we've seen the Dynamo solidify their cellar dwelling position by moving Jarkko Olsen and Lennox Moher for draft picks.

The first game we will take a more in-depth look at is this close battle between the Americans and Titans.  In a game that took a shootout to decide, New York came out on top by a score of 4-3.  Leading the way for the Americans were Tom Slaughter and, of course, Odin Tordahl, who scored two points apiece.  Slaughter finished off a great game with the winning goal in the shootout.

In a game that may be best described as a sign of things to come, the Legion manhandled the Iron Eagles by a score of 6-2.  Toronto got off to a quick start this game, scoring less than four minutes in and never looking back.  They were lead by Devin Sundberg's hat trick and Jerrick Poole's four points as they coasted to a win in a game dominated by their young talent.

Finally, we have another surprising result, with the the Meute being shut out by the Express 3-0.  Blaine Olynick earned the shutout by stopping all nineteen shots he faced.  Leo Tesla paced Cologne's offense by adding two goals, including one on the powerplay in the second period.  The Express have been on a roll as of late and appear poised to earn a playoff spot and make the next big step in the team's future.

Neither did a lot of people until they went through and read about it though. Jala and the rest of the team read quite a lot about it to be able to write it. Not a lot of people know the history, that was part of the purpose of the task imo.

    Game Discussion

As we've crossed the halfway point of the season, teams have now fairly firmly established their place in the league.  While the North American playoff picture is already becoming very clear, the European Conference appears to be a race that won't be decided until the final days of the regular season.

In our first game, we have a battle between the top dogs in the North American Conference.  While the Meute are trying to show they can hang with the Americans, they failed to do so in a 6-2 loss this week.  Bennett Wahl's 5 points carried New York to victory along with Odin Tordahl's addition of three goals.  This was a very disappointing result for the Meute who failed to keep up with their conference rivals all game despite Bruno Wolf supplying all the offense for the team.

Next we have a matchup between two teams who reaped the benefits of the strong Season 40 Entry Draft.  After playing an earlier matchup just days prior in which the Legion pulled off an impressive and surprising 1-0 victory of the Express, they were able to upset Cologne once again in a big 3-2 win.  Devin Sundberg's two goals led the way for the Legion as they managed to make their CPU goaltender look good once again.

Finally we have the game between the Riga Reign and Calgary Wranglers.  It took overtime to decide a winner in this tilt between two teams in the heat of playoff races in which the Reign were able to pull off the 2-1 win off a Brennan McQueen goal.  Goaltender Mike Szatowski Jr. was strong between the pipes for the Reign, giving them the win despite a Wrangler shot advantage.

    Game Discussion

VHL teams are beginning to build their identities and it is becoming increasingly clear who is a contender and who just is not ready to compete for the cup yet.  Here's a look at some of the biggest games of the past week.

In a battle between the two conference leaders who happen to own the top two records in the league, the Titans were able to come out on top in this battle with the Americans by a score of 3-0.  Jackson Miller scored all three goals in this one has his hat trick led the Titans to victory while Kimmo Salo not only pitched a 22 save shutout in net but added an assist on Miller's first goal.  The Americans still have the slightly better record but Helsinki is on their tails.

The Wranglers and Express, despite their mediocrity to this point in the season, put on a show for the rest of the league this week.  After some back and forth scoring, the two teams found themselves tied 3-3 after regulation.  After overtime and a long shootout, the Wranglers managed to secure the two points as the Express went home disappointed despite a great effort in a 4-3 loss.  Wesley Kellinger scored a goal and two assists for the Express while rookie teammate Mason Richardson added both a goal and an assist in regulation.  But it was not enough to overcome the Wranglers, who pulled off a shootout win after eight rounds.

Finally, we have this surprise handling of the Meute by the Iron Eagles.  Despite being out-shot, Vasteras held on to their early lead to emerge victorious by a score of 3-1.  Leading the way for the Iron Eagles was none other than Niklas Lindberg, whose two goals increased his league-leading total to 26.

Next we have travehave's article, entitled Wranglers Hitting Stride.  It's an interesting overview of the Wranglers' season to this point, which sees them sitting comfortable in playoff position.

Finally, make sure to take a look at Caillean22's graphic of Jamie Hill.  It's extremely smooth and helps to preserve Hill's femininity although it will be interesting to see if she can ever make the jump to the VHL!

Boobs is right, it's stretched too thin for the population that actually occupy the rosters. Having half as many teams with twice as many people, which probably still wouldn't be a full roster, is better then having 3 ROSTER PLAYERS on a team with 1-2 of them being active.

The Season 39 VHL All-Star game saw a tight battle that saw the North American Conference come away with a 7-6 overtime victory off a Wesley Kellinger goal just 40 seconds into the extra frame.

    Three Stars
    3. Odin Tordahl 1 G, 3 A, +1
    2. Wesley Kellinger 2 G, 2 A, +1
    1. Willem Janssen 4 G, 2 A, +2

With Season 40 kicking off, the Americans have been asserting their dominance as they look to repeat as Continental Cup Champions.  Through six games, they are undefeated at 6-0, including two big wins over HC Dynamo, last season's runners up.  Bennett Wahl's four points led the Americans past Davos in the first game while Brick Wahl pitched a shutout in the rematch.

Although we are early this season, the Vasteras Iron Eagles have been very impressive.  They're lead by Niklas Lindberg's league-leading 15 points and Eggly Bagelface's three shutouts, which are exactly half of the shutouts the league has seen to this point.  The Iron Eagles currently sit at first place in the European Conference

Tyler Cote so far has come as advertised this season racking up 6 points in 6 games with 5 goals and 1 assist. Cote has carried the way for the offense for a struggling offensive team in the Legion and if it wasn’t for Cote and Poole, the Legion would be far worse than their 2-4-0 record so far this season. Cote currently tied with Gallo for the team lead in goals with 5 and is 2nd in points with 6.  Jerrick Poole just like his other S40 rookie teammate, he has had a good start to his VHL career. The defenseman has put up 7 assist and is leading the team in scoring from the point. Poole does have a blemish on his hot start with 22 PIM in his 6 games which isn’t helping this weak Toronto club.   Poole along with Cote are the future of the team and will have to carry the Legion out of this rebuild by themselves, with no help from Devin Sundberg it seems.

    Game Discussion

Be sure to keep your eyes on the VHL Fantasy Zone, where you can earn uncapped points for correctly predicting the winners and score of selected games.  Currently open are the Season 40 Week 1 Predict the Score and Pickem point tasks!  Also, make sure to join the VHL Fantasy Hockey League for even more points!

    Media & Graphics

One cool media spot from this past week was this one by Higgins.  It discusses the possibility of expansion in the VHL and potential destinations for a new franchise!

Another article you should make sure to check out is Victor's 40 in 40 article discussing some of the VHL's history and some of the best goaltenders to play in the league.

We also have an article written by RomanesEuntDomus highlighting some of the worst trades in Vasteras' recent history.  Definitely worth checking out for just a bit more information on why, if any team ends up relocating, it will likely be the Iron Eagles.

Moving on to graphics, here is a beautiful signature created for Jody 3 Moons by the one and only Mr. Baller.

Also, take a look at Motzaburger's Lukas Nykvist graphic.  It's simple but sexy and I definitely think he should make one for my player

Overall, it's been a great first week back into the swing of things!  Looking forward to next week, where we will be introducing a player spotlight section - reply here if you're interested in being featured!

Also, if anyone would like to create a graphic for VHL This Week, that would be amazing and I'll love you forever!

Interesting to see how this turns out. 90% of the "errors" are British English, and correct in that form of the language. Not sure what will come of it (whether they instruct HawksFan on the differences and what not to correct in the future, or they just leave it go) but since this article is Victor's, I suspect the former. In any case, it's a simple enough thing to have happen. A lot of new graders have done exactly this in the past, so it's no issue either way as long as it doesn't affect his final.

The last couple weeks have been highlighted by doubled point tasks as part of the Season 40 Festivities.  Graphic makers received the opportunity to submit a banner while media writers were able to write a "historical" article.

One article I thought was interesting was Riggsy's, discussing SHL stars who have made the transition to the VHL.
