The VHL playoffs are finally here and Eagles is excited by Vancouver's potential to go far. The Wolves completed a great turn-around in the second half to finish the season in 2nd place.

" It's definitely exciting watching the turn-around, all our players clicked and we managed to get home ice advantage" Said Eagles " It was a close race, 2nd to 6th was only separated by 3 points so it was an exciting finish"

The Wolves now switch gears and are training heavily for the playoffs. If the Wolves can keep the momentum going from the second half of the season they should have no problems going far in the playoffs.

" It would be great if we can make the finals again, I know Vancouver were close last year when I was playing in the VHLM and this year I want to be part of that run and help support from the bench, All our players are ready to go and it would just be an underachievement if we didn't end up in the finals once more" Eagles said from this morning practice

Eagles wants to be an investor if a team goes to Wroclaw

In recent months there have been a lot of rumors about an expansion to VHL. Today it was announced that 2 teams will be joining the VHL. In this article we discuss putting a team in Poland in the city of Wroclaw.

Wroclaw is a city in Western Poland with a population of 630,000+. It is one of the more popular cities in Poland and has hosted many great sporting events such as Euro 2012 football championships and was also named the European Capital of Culture in 2016.

Greg Eagles, who currently plays for Vancouver Wolves, mentioned earlier today that he would definitely be interested as an investor for getting a team in Wroclaw.

“ I think it is about time Poland gets some representation in the VHL, you can’t pick a better city then Wroclaw and I would be more then happy to help invest in getting a team there” Said Eagles " Maybe in the future I would also like to play for them but right now I just want to be a behind the scenes investor, I am very happy in Vancouver and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon but if a team goes to Wroclaw then I want to be 100% involved"

Wroclaw is seen as a great location as it has the population to support a team, very good transportation to support fans getting to and from the city and it is the second wealthiest city in Poland, just behind the Polish capital of Warsaw. There are also plenty of sponsorship opportunities with great local business and also national businesses.

Interest in hockey is starting to rise in Wroclaw as the Vancouver Wolves games are being streamed by a local Wroclaw sports station. Greg Eagles is also on the forefront of spreading hockey in his home town and makes annual visits in the off-season to help promote the sport and to run hockey clinics for the youth in the area.

“ I think it’s great that more kids are looking to play hockey, Wroclaw is a very soccer dominated city but the more sports that the kids get to experience the better for them. “ Said Eagles “ I love going back and teaching everyone how to play hockey and teaching them the rules, I think within the next few years Wroclaw will be a great hockey city and having a team represented in the VHL would be a great motivational factor in helping the game grow here”

Currently there is a hockey league in Poland called the Polska Hokej Liga but it is not as popular as the VHL and mostly consists of teams only from the south. Stadium capacities for these leagues are also small with arenas not being bigger then 5000 capacity. If the VHL were to put a team in Wroclaw, the Polska Hokej Liga could be used as more of a feeder league for future VHL players.

Putting a team in Wroclaw can also help VHL with merchandising income as Polish fans are very loyal to their teams and love to spend money on merchandise. Having at least one Polish team in a popular league can help unite every hockey polish fan to root for Wroclaw which will significantly help VHL’s bottom line.

As of now, no one knows where the 2 teams will land but many are hoping that one of the two will land in Poland and if it does, you can be sure Greg Eagles would be involved in helping bring a team to his home country

With 12 regular game starts and 3 games coming in as backup, Eagles so far has been having an average season. Even though he is a rookie and just getting used to the VHL style of play, he already knows he needs to improve if he is ever to be a starter in this league. Most of his losses have been in 1 goal games. In training he has started to focus on his reaction time and hand speed to make sure he is giving his team a chance to win every night.

Eagles is hoping to get a couple more games in this season to gain some experience before next season

Eagles disappointed to miss out due to TPE Cap

Another year, another non-call up for Greg Eagles to the World Junior to represent Europe in the competition.

Last season he was labelled as not yet good enough and this season he was labelled as too good due to the fact he had a couple extra TPE.

" I always wanted to play and represent my country so it kinda sucks that I am not eligible because I put in extra work/time in practice, I think eligibility should be aged based in the juniors and not how good you are or how much time you put into practice. You know make it for players 18 or 19 and under" said Eagles.

It is a disappointing start to his career as he will now never be able to represent on the world junior stage and that was always one of his goals.

" It is disappointing but I couldn't put my career on hold and sabotage getting better for my team. If I stopped practicing to keep myself at 350, it could have potentially ruined my shot at playing quality games for my VHL team. I just think maybe the rules need to be looked at and just make it an age things so that us players don't have to play a balancing act between club and representing our country" Eagles continues

Even if the change was made to an age cap instead of a talent cap, there is no telling if Eagles would get an invite. World Cup Gm's have a difficult choice to make in each position and are always making sure they are picking the best players in each position.

His next chance to represent his country would be in the world cup in S68. It will be challenging as there is a decent amount of competition for the backup role. If Kalis Kriketers has not retired by that point, Kalis would definitely  be the main starting goalie.

The question is will Eagles answer the call after being passed up in the world juniors or will he focus strictly on his VHL team, the Vancouver Wolves.

" It's tough to say, I always dream of playing for my country but I have to focus on my career and that is with the Wolves, I guess I will have to figure it out if I get an invite next season or not"

We believe that if Eagles continues training and playing well that he will eventually get the call up and that he wouldn't turn down an opportunity to represent his country as part of Team World in the World Cup. Eagles has always been the type of player where he wants to win cups and do the best that he can for whatever team he is playing. Eagles may have just been speaking in the heat of the moment where he says he doesn't know if he would play if he received an invite, but I will go on the record to say that there is a 99% chance he will accept the invite if called up.

Greg_Di reacted to CowboyinAmerica in CIA's Certainly Wrong S68 Mock Draft
A Very Early S68 VHL Mock Draft

As we reach the two-thirds mark of the VHL season and descend upon the Trade Deadline, this would normally be the time where I write that the pack has separated into haves and have nots. But this season, that isn’t really the case. The last team in the lottery (Riga) is just six points behind the third team overall (Calgary). Last place in the league (New York) is just nine points behind a playoff spot. Really, anything can happen.

So that means that projecting a draft order right now – not even taking into account the flat lottery odds – is a fool’s errand. Luckily for you, I’m a fool.

Here’s an early look at the way the draft could potentially fall, with the caveat that even a 10% success rate on these picks is purely coincidental. There’s a lot that goes into draft picks, including personal friendships and alliances. I’m ignoring all of that – this mock largely bases itself on TPE and team fit. If you think your player is listed too low, then it is absolutely because I dislike you personally, and not because I’m just throwing darts at a board.

Now, let’s get down to business. A big thank you to @rjfryman as well, whose rankings were invaluable for putting this together.

     1. New York Americans – D Condor Adrienne @Green
There’s only a 25% chance that the team with the worst record actually ends up with the first overall pick, but if that’s the case for New York, then this pick would seem to be a slam dunk. Adrienne has run away with the most TPE in this class, and looks to be engaged that his agency perhaps hasn’t been since all the way back with O’Malley. New York, meanwhile, has loads of talented, young forwards but not as much on the blue line. It’s a perfect match.

     2. Malmo Nighthawks – D Lance Flowers @CowboyinAmerica
Malmo already has talent pretty much across the board, including at forward (led by rookies Lucas Nygren and Phil Marleau), defense (Rusty Shackleford and Jerry Garcia) and goalie (Michael Johnson). They can afford to go best player available at this spot, and by pure TPE, it would seem to be Flowers. Alongside fellow upcoming rookie – and former Halifax linemate – Hugh Chan, Flowers would be a stabilizing force on the second line for years to come. Four active, young defenseman is a luxury not many other VHL teams have.

     3. HC Davos Dynamo – C Thorny Underyew @jack
Davos has a glut of young defensive talent with Werbenjagermanjensen, Paddywagon and LeGrande, but while their forward core is slowly growing with recent additions like Martin and Scoringsonn, there’s room for more top-shelf talent. Underyew, Eller and Lehtinen should all be names that are in consideration here, but one thing that Davos’ recent picks have in common is that they’re pure playmakers – not a single checking point among them. Out of the three potential draftees, Underyew’s play is the most physical, which adds a different element to the Dynamo squad.

     4. HC Davos Dynamo (via Riga Reign) – G A Red Guy @.sniffuM
Finn Davison has been the goalie of the future for Davos for a while, but slowly but surely, that’s evolved into the goalie of the present. By the time the draft occurs, Davison will be entering the back half of his career. And given that the Dynamo’s timeline seems to coincide with more of a rebuild – Crimson and Davis aren’t getting any younger – it makes sense to grab a goalie of the future for the next time the team’s in contention. Guy is the best goalie available and has rocketed up draft charts; it wouldn’t surprise me if that continues over the coming weeks.

     5. Seattle Bears – C Frans Eller @Ace
Last draft was all about stopping the puck for the Bears, with defenseman Hogan and Jenton and goalie Funk all selected in the first 11 picks, alongside GM player Stark. The Bears did pick up Burn at #7 and had three second round forwards, alongside its S66 forward class, but it makes sense to me to pick up more top flight offensive scoring talent. Eller is exactly that, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him slot into the team’s second line sometime during his rookie year.

     6. Vancouver Wolves – D Jeff Downey @JeffD
It’s getting close to pure rebuild time for the Wolves, and outside of goalie (where they may have gotten a steal in Eagles), they could use an injection of youth in just about every position. Downey has shot up draft rankings since he declared, and given that Vancouver only has one current defenseman younger than S65 and over 200 TPE, it’s clear to see that he’d be a defensive cornerstone for years to come. Lehtinen and Gunnar would also be reasonable picks here if they decided to go offense instead.

     7. Helsinki Titans – LW Teemu Lehtinen Jr. @Sixersfan549
Helsinki’s an interesting one to project for me. The Titans only have one pick in the first three rounds, and given their recent success, the inclination may be to trade this pick for one last go in Thompson’s final season. But if they do keep the pick, they have a few young players, mostly S66, that would form a nice future core. Adding Lehtinen would allow Helsinki the best of both worlds – keeping a cornerstone for the future and a potential rebuild, while adding a high TPE player that can contribute depth right away for another run.

     8. Calgary Wranglers – LW Sigard Gunnar @Big Mac
We’re getting very close to rebuild time in Calgary, and I bet the team’s management knows it. As a result, this pick could easily be on the block for a future first or as part of a rebuild package. But if it’s kept, the goal should be for a standout player that will still be around as part of a contending squad three or four seasons down the road. Gunnar is exactly that type of player – a pure scorer that can help get through the lean times – and also represents the best value on the board. The forward market takes a bit of a dip from here.

     9. Moscow Menace – G Raymond Bernard @Mr_Hatter
For the Menace, their time is now – with so many players on the roster, it’s not only win or bust, but the salary cap situation is going to start to look very sticky when those S66 rookie contracts run out in a year. That’s why a future piece like Bernard makes sense to me: In the short term, he replaces the elder Sterling as the team’s second goalie, a must-have when every game is crucial. But if everything goes right, he also could be a challenge to incumbent Owen May in the long-term, given that Bernard has racked up a higher TPE rate as of late.

     10. New York Americans (via Toronto Legion) – D Luciano Valentino @Kekzkrieg
As noted above, it makes sense for New York to be particularly defense-heavy in this draft. There’s a potential for it to be too defense-heavy – in this scenario, they’re adding not only Adrienne but GM player Keven Foreskin. Still, Valentino is easily the best talent currently available on the board, and he’s shot up the draft rankings in recent weeks. He’s a great value with the final selection in the first round, and in the actual draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually ends up a bit higher.

     11. New York Americans – LW Micha Sage @AcousticKazoo
     12. HC Davos Dynamo (via Malmo Nighthawks) – D Wolf Stansson Jr. @Cornholio
     13. New York Americans (via HC Davos Dynamo) – RW Ryo Yamazuki II @Donno100
     14. Riga Reign – G Fang Flashback @uphillmoss
     15. Moscow Menace (via Seattle Bears) – LW Justin Rushmore @street
     16. Vancouver Wolves – RW Bud Knight @Dilly Dilly
     17. New York Americans (via Helsinki Titans) – D Aamon Grim @aCrypticPancake
     18. Calgary Wranglers – RW Case Martell @Shaka
     19. Vancouver Wolves (via Moscow Menace) – D Ricky Johnson @Midnite

Now knowing where he is playing for the foreseeable future, Greg Eagles, decided to splash the cash and buy a house in Vancouver. His new house is 22,000 sq feet sitting on 1.2 acres of property with some spectacular views.

Eagles bought the house for an undisclosed fee but it is said to be worth millions. Eagles will take possession of the property in the next few months.

" I know I will probably be in Vancouver for quite some time and I was tired living out of hotels. I decided to splash the cash on a pretty decent house, now I just have to find stuff to fill it up with" Said Greg Eagles " I know it might be a little too big for just myself but I intend to have a family one day and I just couldn't pass up this opportunity"

It is rumored the new house has an indoor hockey rink and a gym where Eagles can practice in the off-season. His future neighbors might be worried as Eagles has a past of partying late into the night with his team-mates and friends. We will have to wait and see if this behavior has changed or if Eagles will make this private quiet street into a much louder neighborhood

    Eagles with the Win

Eagles makes the game winning save in the shootout

When you talk to hockey players, you often hear them mention the “little things” that are part of their games, and it becomes apparent very quickly that those little things will eventually add up to something much bigger.

For Wolves backup goalie, Greg Eagles, one of those little things has turned out to be a pretty big thing during the last game where he earned a 3-2 shootout win over the league leading Toronto Legion.

Eagles played a great game stopping 27 shots out of 29 and stopped Veran Dragomir in the shootout to get his team the much needed win. So far this season Eagles has put up pretty decent numbers as a rookie backup. Eagles currently sits at a 2-4 record with a .913 save percentage and a 2.85 GAA.

“ I think as a rookie I have been playing well and giving my team a chance to win every time I start. This last game was great for me and a confidence booster as we faced the top team in the league” Said Eagles “ I am happy that the GM showed some faith in me and trusted me against such a good team, I mean they have only lost 4 regular games and 3 OT games so for me, that is a huge win and will probably be the highlight of my season”

Now let’s get back to that little thing that’s really a big thing. Starting in training camp with Vancouver, their Goalie coach encouraged Eagles to improve his positioning, moving up in his crease in a more aggressive position to challenge shooters, cutting down the angle, giving them less net to shoot at.

“I felt depth in his net was an area that he really needed to work on, Greg is  not a big guy, so his positioning is crucial” said the goalie coach. “So we made some slight adjustments there when he got to Vancouver and you can see the results for yourself. His positioning has greatly improved”

When speaking with Eagles he indicated that he is getting used to the change and the new positioning style.

“It was little bit new to me, but we’ve been working on it since training camp, so I’m starting to feel pretty comfortable with it. It will still take time to be 100% with it but games like the game vs Toronto are showing me that it is working” Eagles Said.

Wolves goalie coach also indicated that Greg’s attitude has also been a significant factor in his early success with his new team.

“It’s up to the goalie to be able to adjust to new training, new positions, new regiments” said Wolves goalie coach. “My philosophy for anyone who’s come in here has been if you do it your way and start losing us hockey games, you’ll do it my way going forward. But as far as Greg goes, from day one he was following my plan, following and improving on everything I say, he’s very receptive, very coachable”

If Eagles can continue training at his current pace and playing well when called upon, there will be no surprises when he becomes a future star goaltender in the league. For now, his only concern is helping the Wolves into the playoffs.
