I've been wanting this for years. A counter on a players update page on howmuch capped they've done per week (example included). It's easy to count to 12 but it would be helpful for a quick glance to make sure you've hit 12/12 per week, and very helpful for drafting to see howmuch players are earning across a couple week/month scale.

With the VHLM draft quickly approaching, I spoke with the VHLM GMs and asked them a few questions about their thoughts and goals for the future.

    1. What are your goals for the upcoming draft, and the season beyond?

Miami’s GM @Ricer13 is looking for long-term success. To do that he is looking to build his asset pool to gain future assets. With nine picks in the draft, four being in the first two rounds, there will be plenty of assets to work with.

@Dadam30, GM of the Saskatoon Wild, hopes to put together a contending team this season. They are poised for the future as well, with plenty of draft picks to work with. With 10 picks in the S93 draft, there is plenty of capital for both the present and the future.

The San Diego Marlins would love to draft players who are active and willing to learn. GM @Mysterious_Fish is looking for someone who can contribute in the locker room as well as on the ice, with a willingness to develop being a key to their success. The Marlins only have one early round pick and five total, so it seems development for the future is the key goal going forward.

@Grape's Ottawa Lynx want to compete now. They have 12 total picks in the upcoming draft and are looking to make some splashes that will help this season and extend beyond S93. The goal for the Lynx is to cultivate a consistent competitive mindset for seasons to come.

S93 is GM @JCarson first draft as Mexico City King’s GM. He told me that his goal for the season is to build a balanced team in the draft. He wants to be able to compete early on, but also be developed to be stronger in the playoffs. Mexico City holds a pick in each of the seven rounds of the draft so they can most certainly build a well-balanced team with those options.

For GM @LucyXpher and the Halifax 21st the goal is simple, use their early picks (two first rounders and two seconds, nine total) to select players who can play at the top of the lineup now. Halifax is looking for players that are reliable to compete for the full 72-game schedule but is hoping to find some late round talent with potential that can be fostered for seasons to come. They are not only looking for the obvious talent but also the diamonds in the rough who are really pushing to make a name for themselves in their early career.

The Mississauga Hounds GM @Nathan_8's goal in the draft is simple: build a good team with the picks available. There is potential to also move down in order to grab more picks. He believes with the draft capital at his disposal he will be able to do just that.

After a heartbreaking loss in the finals, @McLovin and the Las Vegas Aces are gearing up for a long and hard rebuild. With more later picks than early ones, the Aces will have to get lucky with a gem in the later rounds to kickstart the rebuild process.

Next is last season's Founder's Cup champs, the Philadelphia Reapers. GM @Lemorse7 is planning on making a splash in the draft to keep the Reapers' winning ways going. Although they only have five total picks, they have one in each of the first two rounds and have retained three players from last season so it isn't totally out of the question. Seeing as they need a decent goalie to make sure that happens, I expect a possible focus on doing just that.

Last but certainly not least, GM @AJW with the Huston Bulls. He believes the success of a team is built from within. With so much uncertainty throughout the VHLM season, the Bulls look for a winning mentality over pure skill. If the players they draft are active and willing to put the work in, he thinks anyone can come out as a champion. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) AJW was quoted saying "Rebuilding/waiting for the future is BORING!!!!", so I think it's safe to say he's planning for the present above all else.

    2. Who do you think will be the #1 pick and why?

It seems the GMs of the VHLM don’t have a consensus pick for #1 in the draft. Some names were thrown around, but they all seem equally likely to be picked first overall. Of the names mentioned, there were:

Felicia Hardy @JCarson - There was a gut feeling behind Hardy being the first pick in the draft. The big defenceman played 20 games with San Diego last season, shelling out 16 hits and blocking 28 shots.

Tyler Lawson @Nyx - If he chooses to stay in the VHLM, Lawson is one of, if not the best centre in the draft. He has a big shot and “high offensive upside” as quoted by one GM. A point-per-game player last season with 56 points in 56 games, any team would be ecstatic to have the offensive prowess of Lawson.

Jillian Woods @jacobcarson877 - Jillian Woods is one of the only players remaining in the VHLM who has 200 TPA. A two-way defenceman, Woods can be effective at both ends of the ice.

    3. What do you look for in a potential draft pick? What are your intangibles?

What the GMs are looking for in a potential draft pick is fairly consistent across the board. First and foremost, activity in the forums and on the Discord is completely necessary. They recognize that without this, there is little to no improvement. Staying active will show the GMs that you’re willing to put the work in to earn that precious TPE every week. Most are compassionate, understanding there is a world outside of the VHL that takes priority, but when building a team to win, activity is the highest indicator of an up-and-coming star.
The next most important piece of the puzzle seems to be attitude. GMs want to see that a potential draft pick can fit in with their team in the locker room. The goal ultimately is to have fun and create an atmosphere that encourages that. Players that exude that energy are generally gravitated toward because they improve the experience for the others around them as well. While the process to earn the TPE to be a star can be a long one, players who understand that and embrace it will catch the eye of GMs throughout each of the leagues.
Lastly, what players do to earn TPE and how they go about it is significant to the GMs that I spoke to. They want to see a variety of point tasks attempted to see that all avenues are being used to improve their players. A player who participates in trivia and press conferences each week is much more valuable to a GM than one who ignores them or completes them sporadically. It is understood that every player doesn’t inherently know how to do everything on arrival in the VHL, but it is recognized when an attempt is being made to take the initiative and learn. This tends to be a good indicator of what they’ll become early on in their career.
Overall, this is shaping up to be an exciting draft! I had multiple people tell me how deep it is and how likely it may be to find a diamond in the later rounds. For all the draft hopefuls, whether you’re the first pick or the last, keeping up with your point tasks and staying active will most certainly make a name for yourself quickly in this league. Even if you can’t tell, the GMs are keeping a close eye on everyone and making very informed decisions, so keep up the good work!

EDIT: I would like to source that I took some of my research from @Grape's article overviewing each team leading up to the draft so I'd like to give him credit:

Good luck to all the players and GMs participating in the S93 VHLM draft!

This is a great overview of what's to come in the draft. While each team's profile is short, it still feels comprehensive while being easy to digest. This is definitely worth the read for both VHLM GMs and draftees alike as it shows what each can expect for the upcoming season. As a new player looking at their first draft, this overview is a big help to see where I might fit in on each team before being drafted at all. Thanks for putting in the work to research and write this out!

Hogan reacted to Grape in VHLM Team Overview Leading Up To The S93 Draft
With the draft coming in this Saturday, many teams in the VHLM are sitting in different positions. While some appear to be primed for a competitive season, and have made moves in order to all but guarantee that, while other teams are looking at next season with weary eyes, knowing that it’s going to be a long one. If there was any season to have draft picks, it’s this one. With the massive recruitment drive and a ton of retention, we’ll be looking at active players going all the way till the end of the draft. Suffice to say, this may be one of the best drafts the VHLM has had in a long time. At least this season, gone are the completely barren rosters with like two guys sitting around twiddling their thumbs in the locker room. Every team should be able to put together at least the bones of a roster. With that being said, let’s take a look at how each team looks going into this draft.
(every roster was adjusted based on IAs on the roster as of 3/11/24)

    Philadelphia Reapers

    Roster: 1 Forward, 2 Defensemen
    Draft Picks: 1 First, 1 Second, 1 Fourth, 1 Sixth, 1 Seventh

The reigning Founders Cup champions are in a relatively comfortable position coming into the draft. The Jinn draft strategy last draft has appeared to pay off, as they are retaining three for this upcoming season, with two being defensemen. With a D-pair locked down, they can take advantage of the usual deep forward class and bolster an offense. There are also a large number of serviceable goaltenders in this draft, so they can fill that hole relatively easily. With the draft class being as deep as it is, they should be able to get an active player all the way to their seventh. Having spent little draft picks for their cup run, they are in a great position to attempt the repeat, and should be able to cobble together, at the very least, a winning season.

    Las Vegas Aces

    Roster: 1 Forward
    Draft Picks: 1 First, 1 Third, 1 Fourth, 1 Fifth, 3 Sixths, 1 Seventh

Coming up short is never fun, especially when the window closes immediately after. Las Vegas seems to be primed to go into a hard rebuild, signaled with the trading of their starting goaltender and some depth picks for futures in Season 94. While they do have a handful of picks in this draft, it appears that they’ll do their damage with later round players at lower TPA levels, and hopefully retain them for the push next season, with higher TPA players likely being moved at the deadline this season. While it won’t be a long rebuild by any stretch, it’ll be a painful one going into this season.

    Houston Bulls

    Roster: 2 Forwards, 1 Goaltender
Draft Picks: 1 Second, 2 Fourths, 1 Sixth, 1 Seventh

The Bulls are in somewhat the same position as Las Vegas, with it not necessarily looking to be a winning season next season, having basically gone all in and coming up with nothing. They are definitely in a worse spot pickwise and will likely struggle to put together a competitive roster, coupled with the fact that their goalie could very well go up to the VHLE if they so desired. The pieces they are able to acquire will likely all carry over into the next, with the exception of the second, so while this is going to be a struggling season, season 94 will see a return to the dominant Houston Bulls team.

    Miami Marauders

    Roster: Absolutely nothing
    Draft Picks: 2 Firsts, 2 Seconds, 1 Third, 2 Fifths, 1 Sixth, 1 Seventh

Miami is the first team with absolutely no players on their roster, which serves as a monumental task in terms of putting together a competitive team, as not everybody can be the worst. They do have the maximum amount of early round picks, with two picks in both the first and second round, and should be able to gather some top-flight talent. The big determining factor going into this season is the depth picks. If they can hit on their later round selections, they will at least have a competitive squad going into this season. If they miss, they may have to rely on a select few players on a very bare roster, which has been successful, but not necessarily ideal.

    Mexico City Kings

    Roster: 1 Forward, 1 Defenseman
    Draft Picks: 1 First, 1 Second, 1 Third, 1 Fourth, 1 Fifth, 1 Sixth, 1 Seventh

Mexico City is kind of a funny team. I believe they are the only team to hold a pick in every round and those only being their original picks. They also will need to use all those picks in order to put together a roster worth competing with. A rather bare roster as of now, with the threat of their defenseman moving up to the VHLE, they’re likely to come out of the draft with the skeleton of a team, but no real meat to give it an extra punch. Whoever they select will be their ride or die, with no room for adjustment. That also puts pressure on the GM to hit on each pick, as one misstep and they’ll be forced to slot a bot into the lineup.

    San Diego Marlins

    Roster: 1 Goaltender
Draft Picks: 1 Second, 2 Fourths, 2 Sevenths

The Marlins are cooked. Very bare on the draft picks, and only one player on the roster, this may be the worst team in the league coming into this season. It would take a monumental reach for this team to be competitive, and would likely get bounced in a sweep if they somehow sniff the playoffs. Much like Mexico City, every pick needs to be a hit, which becomes very difficult when you’re grabbing your first line forward or top pairing defenseman in the last round of the draft. The only thing they can look forward to is hopefully retaining those they do draft and build upon the foundation they set to possibly compete in Season 94.

    Saskatoon Wild

    Roster: 2 Forwards, 1 Goaltender
    Draft Picks: 2 Firsts, 2 Seconds, 2 Thirds, 1 Fourth, 1 Fifth, 1 Sixth, 1 Seventh

The Wild are in arguably the best position going into this draft. Six picks in the first three rounds puts them in a position to get a plethora of top players in this draft class and put together the best roster right out of the gate. The team is relatively bare in the later rounds, which could prove to be a disservice if any of the top picks end up drifting away, as well as put into question the competitiveness of next season, but this is the VHLM, the next season is always a question mark. There is a slight concern that one of their forwards moves onto the VHLE, but they do have the high end picks to supplement that loss if it does occur.

    Ottawa Lynx

    Roster: 1 Goaltender
    Draft Picks: 2 Firsts, 3 Thirds, 1 Fourth, 4 Fifths, 1 Sixth, 1 Seventh

Ottawa made a decent splash before the draft, acquiring a starting goaltender in exchange for two picks in the S94 draft. Goaltending has been their achilles heel for the past few seasons, being the biggest weakness on some otherwise strong rosters. They have a good mix of early and late picks, which should provide a balance of high end talent and young, growing depth, which would allow multiple seasons of competitiveness. The main concern is constructing a full roster, as they are starting with a relatively clean slate and can’t necessarily afford to miss on their picks, as this appears to be the season in which they want to compete.

    Halifax 21st

    Roster: 1 Defenseman, 1 Goaltender
    Draft Picks: 2 Firsts, 2 Seconds, 1 Third, 2 Fifths, 1 Sixth, 1 Seventh

Halifax seems to be preparing to compete this season, as they’ve built up a decent amount of early round picks and a couple in the later rounds, attempting to strike a balanced roster of capped and growing for multiple competing seasons. This would be a nice change of pace, as it feels that Halifax has been stuck in the basement of the VHLM for quite some time. Having a good goaltender and a mediocre defenseman definitely helps, and they should at the very least be able to cobble together a good squad that likely finishes in the top half of the league.

    Mississauga Hounds

    Roster: 1 Goaltender
Draft Picks: 1 First, 2 Seconds, 1 Third, 1 Sixth

The lowly Hounds are in probably the worst position compared to every other team in the league. After an abysmal season, one would hope the next one would yield a more competitive result, but that does not seem to be the case for Mississauga. With a small pool of picks and only a single player on their roster, it appears that the Hounds will have another down season. The best they can hope for is to sell high on their capped assets this season and build for the future.

    Hogan’s Guide to TPE Earning

    Uncapped Vs Capped

Before we start I'd like to also mention that this is avaliable in the form of a video.

    Uncapped TPE
Unlimited amount per week with even more ways to earn it compared to capped TPE.
Donating, Practice Facility, Training Camp, Giveaways, Career Tasks, Super Coach, Fantasy, Theme week, Reviewing, Many, many more

    Capped TPE
12 Capped a week. Can be gained through a few different mediums.
Graphics, Articles, Videos, Press Conferences, Welfare, Podcasts, Trivia

Both of these can be combined weekly to max out your total TPE gain. Members who wish to gain as much TPE as they possibly can should focus on making sure they cap out at 12 capped per week and earn as much uncapped as they can.

    RED= Capped
    GREEN= Uncapped
I will be following in this general order which is how the player development page on the forums is laid out. The main changes in this order will come at the end where I will outline additional uncapped TPE opportunities.

    Let’s start with Capped TPE
Each week, a player can earn up to 12 capped TPE. These primarily are from a major PTs worth 6 TPE (Graphics, Videos, Podcasts, Articles). The remaining 6 TPE comes from smaller PTs which vary in TPE amounts (Press Conferences, Trivia, Mini Pods, etc.) The league runs on a weekly schedule, meaning this 12 TPE can be earned from Monday-Sunday before it resets.
A typical week of earning for me looks like the following: Graphic, Press conference, mini graphic, trivia. Many members also follow this pattern but there are a ton of different ways to hit 12 TPE.

    Media Spots
Media spots are a minimum 500 word article about anything VHL related. Accepted on the basis of effort, also make sure to have as proper punctuation as you can. Images, titles, paragraph organization, and more can all help your media spots look better. (I’ve tried to apply some techniques here) Additionally, Media spots are unique in that they can claim TPE over multiple weeks.
    500 Words- 1 Week
    1000 Words- 2 Weeks
    1500 Words- 3 Weeks
    2000 Words- 4 weeks
This allows you to post a single media spot and claim it over a month, which is great if you plan on being less active for a period of time. Personally, I plan on claiming this while on a vacation.

    Graphics
-Graphics are among the most common ways to earn TPE in the VHL.
-They are worth 6 TPE and are typically accepted based on effort, not their quality.

Here we have three graphics from @Zetterberg, @McWolf, and @Subject056 respectively. We can see clear “quality” differences in each graphic but the most important thing for one to be accepted is effort as mentioned.

    Videos
Videos in the VHL are not very common, but can still earn you 6 TPE. Videos are typically player edits with highlights from real hockey games. Music and effects are great ways to add more to your videos and improve how they look. Videos are posted under the same location as graphics, this is most likely due to how uncommon they are, meaning they don’t get their own spot.

    Podcasts
Podcasts are unique because multiple people can claim TPE on them. You can record yourself talking about anything VHL related and upload the audio to claim your TPE. Similarly to media spots, podcasts can be claimed over multiple weeks if they meet the requirements below. The TPE gained per podcast depends largely on how many people are included in it. There are also rare cases where you can claim TPE for stuff such as live streams which count as podcasts.

Here we can see the chart showing how TPE gain works through podcasts.

    Welfare and Pension
If you don’t want to or can’t do a 6 TPE task, then welfare is always there.Welfare is a free 4 capped TPE that you can get through the player page. It replaces your 6 point task, meaning you can only earn up to 10 TPE in a week where you claimed welfare.

Pension is essentially a welfare upgrade, which grants 5 TPE. You cant start receiving welfare right away though. To get it, you must first have two players in the VHL reach 700+ TPE.

    VHL.Com Articles, Graphics, Radio
These three are essentially the smaller versions of Media Spots, Articles, and podcasts and they’re worth less as they are shorter. Articles must be 150 words and face the same rules about effort as Media Spots. Graphics are typically lower quality, but still have effort put into them. VHL.com articles and graphics are both worth 2 TPE. VHL.com radio posts have to be at least five minutes long, but are worth 3 TPE. They are essentially mini podcasts and are a solid way to earn TPE based on time required.

    Trivia
Each week, you may answer two trivia questions, worth 1 TPE each. These questions can be found in the portal, under the “League” heading. Trivia questions vary from member to member meaning that you will likely not have the same two questions as any other member. Answers can be tricky to find, but the VHL discord has a trivia help channel that can be very useful.

    Reviewing and Game Recaps
Reviews are to be 75 words minimum reviewing an article, graphic or podcast. These can be posted as a part of the thread of whatever you are reviewing. You can review two things a week for 1 TPE each. Game recaps are 75 words minimum recapping any VHL game that you as a member did NOT take part in, as a player or GM. As is the case with reviews, you can write two weekly for 1 TPE each and they go under the sims of which the game happened.

    Press Conferences
Press Conferences are all about answering/asking six questions. Each team has their own press conference, although you can also make a personal press conference for your player and request questions. The VHL has recently added “Answer 3, Ask 3”. Which is an ongoing thread where people answer the three previous questions posted and ask three of their own. You can answer any questions, even other teams, although it is advised that you do your own teams.

    Job Pay
There are many different jobs in the VHL and there is a TPE incentive for almost all of them. Job pay varies a lot from position to position with some paying two while others are all the way up to eight. Job pay is something that you will most likely learn about through experiencing the VHL.

    Moving onto Uncapped TPE
As previously stated, you can earn an infinite amount of uncapped TPE per week, although there will not always be alot available. There are tons of ways to earn uncapped TPE, some you can do weekly, monthly, while others are per season. There are also events which occur such as donation drives and holidays which give out TPE.

    Practice Facility
The practice facility is the easiest way to earn TPE weekly, it’s just one button located above the welfare button. Every player should claim practice facility every week. The practice facility gives 2 uncapped TPE while you’re in the VHLM and VHLE, and only 1 TPE once you make it to the VHL.

    Career Point Tasks
There are five different career tasks in the VHL. All giving differing amounts of TPE. They are all unlocked at different points of your career. Right off the beginning, members can complete both biographies and prospect scouting reports, then they must wait until their players reach certain milestones.

Biography - To be completed anytime - 800 words 8 TPE
Prospect Scouting Report - To be completed before first VHL game - 400 Words 4 TPE
Hello Europe - To be completed during VHLE season - 400 words 5 TPE
Rookie Experience - To be completed after first VHL season - 400 Words 5 TPE
Career Reflection - To be completed after 4th VHL season - 400 Words - TPE
All of these may also be completed as 10 minute podcasts, except the biography, which is 15 minutes.

    Fantasy
The VHL features three different fantasy options which all take different amounts of time and offer different amounts of TPE based on how you do. We will be looking at the VHL fantasy zone, Victory Hockey Fantasy League, and VHL super coach. VHL Fantasy zone is done weekly, while Fantasy League and Super coach are both per season.

    VHL Fantasy Zone
Each week, multiple questions about each league is posted. Members give their input on what they think is going to happen. The more accurate your predictions are, the more TPE you gain. The Fantasy zone is a quick and easy way to earn TPE and you can request to be mentioned on the forums every week when a new one is posted. These have a cutoff, pay attention to it! I personally find it best to enter my response as late as possible so I can have the best chance at getting the answers correct. It’s much easier to tell which team will do better if they have only two games remaining on the final day of answering instead of eight games when it was posted.

    Victory Hockey Fantasy League
Before every season starts, members can enter their name to join the VHFL. It’s similar to any other fantasy sports in which 6 members draft 4 forwards, 2 defensemen, and 1 goalie through a snake draft. At the end of the season, players are ranked 1st-6th with 6 TPE going to the 1st place, 5 to 2nd etc. You can also apply to be a GM in VHFL, essentially meaning you keep track of the picks and make sure everyone makes their pick in their allotted 12 hour time frame. This gives 1 extra uncapped TPE. Once you’ve done VHLE once it’s easy to understand the role of the GM. There are only a certain number of spots to be GM so it’s best to apply early and make sure if you’re accepted that you do your job well.

    VHL Super Coach
Super Coach is the newest fantasy option the VHL has added, starting last year. Every member is invited to create a team using 42$, with the player's costs being determined by their total TPE minus the last two numbers. Ex. John Jameson 1379 would be worth 13$. Each team consists of 3 forwards, 2 defensemen, and 1 goalie. TPE payout is based on the % in which you finish, with 6 being the most.

    Predictions
Predictions can be done before a VHL season starts during the offseason. You are predicting the results of both players and teams in the VHL. Each correct prediction you make is worth 1 TPE.

    Affiliate TPE
Members can earn 1 TPE monthly by posting a VHL.com level post on the leagues affiliate league the SBA (Simulation Basketball Association). It doesn’t seem like much, but if you want to be a top level TPE earner this is a good way to earn over 20 TPE if you play a full VHL career. You can also use the SBA to gain TPE through affiliate tasks, meaning a graphic posted there can be worth 6 TPE here as well.

First Generation Bonus, Graduation Bonus, and Training Camp.
If you are a first generation player, meaning you are either brand new or haven’t created a player in over three seasons, then you are eligible for the first generation bonus. The first generation bonus is a free uncapped 10 TPE that you can earn once you hit 100 TPE. All you have to do is make a post and link it.
Graduation bonus is a free 10 TPE bonus that is applied to your player once they make it to the VHL.
After you are drafted to the VHL you will be able to claim TPE from the training camp during each off season. There will be a training camp button that appears near the welfare and practice facility button that allows you to claim 10 TPE.

    Recruiting
If you recruit players to the VHL, and they are active and successful members, you can see some benefit out of this. As they progress and reach new TPE benchmarks, you can also earn some, capping out at 15 total. “Recruiting” members can be done in two ways, either getting new members or getting somebody back that has been gone for 3 seasons/6 months. Recruiting can be a great tool to earn TPE that many members never go near.

Here are the TPE requirements for players that are recruited in order for you to get TPE.

    The Player Store
Over the course of your career, your player will rack up money as they sign new contracts. One use for this money is to buy TPE, there are many different purchases you can make. If you plan on having a longer career however, it is smart to save up this money as you will be able to buy depreciation fighters which will make sure your player stays as good as they can be.

    Donations
Members can make donations to grant them a few small advantages in the VHL. Members can donate 5-15$ CAD (3.72-11.15 USD). Each 5$ lets you pick one perk listed below up to three picks. Donations can be done once per season, any time. The VHL also occasionally has donation drives, in which the community raises money
for different causes, sometimes TPE can be earned through these in either a single donation or when the community reaches a large goal.

    The Ones That Occur Randomly
Sometimes, we will be blessed with random TPE from the powers above. Often times this comes from the leagues anniversary or holidays. The amount of TPE given out is random and depends on who is giving it out and why. The biggest yearly event for the VHL is Christmas, in which every day you can post to enter a large raffle for prizes. Some of these prizes are TPE while others are real life video games or jerseys.

    Now what?
Once you’ve earned all these TPE, it’s time to start spending it. There are multiple guides to help members make builds. These can be found on the forums and through the VHL discord. Never be afraid to reach out to people if you need help, your GM’s, AGM’s, teammates, and even random members will always be there for you.

    Did I forget anything?
Probably, yes. The VHL has more ways than ever now to earn TPE and there's a good chance I missed something. As you play more and learn more, you’ll discover so many things about the league and ways to earn. Eventually, more things will be added, always make sure to keep an eye out for them. The most important thing about the league is not to be the best or have the highest TPE totals, but to make sure you’re happy with what you’re doing. Have fun.

If anyone notices any information wrong in this or thinks I should add anything, let me know and I'd be glad to improve it.

    RED= Capped
    GREEN= Uncapped

Hogan reacted to ace_five_ in Prospect Scouting Report: Andrew Skilton
Today I had a chance to sit down with a brand new face in Andrew Skilton. Andrew is new to the VHLM and is looking to make an impact right away. Even as he walked into the room and sat across from me, his presence and poise were immediately displayed.

Let’s first list out the facts before diving into our subjective thoughts on his skill and personality:
    1) Standing at 6’6”, his mere presence in both a locker room and on the ice is towering.
    2) Being a lean 235 lbs. means he’s solid without sacrificing grace on his feet.
    3) Coming over to greet me and shake my hand before beginning instantly displays his demeanour to whoever he is working with.

Now onto skills. What does Andrew bring to the table, other than size, that sets him apart from the others in his draft class?

Defense-first mentality - Andrew takes great pride in being a team-first player. Sacrificing individual achievements for the greater good of the team, he does whatever it takes to keep the puck out of his net. Whether that be blocking a shot with his large frame, making a big hit to knock his opponents off the puck to gain possession, or simply standing tall in front of his net and removing anyone not wearing the same colour as himself from his netminder’s line of sight, Andrew is a force to be reckoned with in the defensive zone. Andrew has a deep understanding of his place on any team and will always do his absolute best to uphold the expectations set for him.

Locker room presence - Being on the older side in a young league, Andrew shows a maturity beyond his years. It has been a long road to get to this point and he has learned to never take the opportunities given to him for granted. A leader both on and off the ice, he has been known to take players aside whenever necessary to make sure everyone stays on the same page. The end goal for Andrew is always team success and he knows that the only way to achieve that is to work together and play off everyone’s strengths. I’ve spoken to his former teammates from all stages of his career and the overwhelming consensus is that he is someone you want in your locker room, no matter the outcome. Andrew always seems to be the rock that keeps everyone grounded as they navigate both the positives and the negatives that come with this game.

Overall, I had an excellent sit down with this young man. In my short time speaking to him, he was diligent in answering my questions with insightful answers. I would be remiss if I didn’t say that any team looking for a big, stay-at-home defenseman who can be there for his friends and teammates no matter the setting, Andrew Skilton is your guy.

Rookie Experience - To be completed after first VHL season - 400 Words 5 TPE
Career Reflection - To be completed after 4th VHL season - 400 Words - TPE
All of these may also be completed as 10 minute podcasts, except the biography, which is 15 minutes.

Hogan reacted to ace_five_ in My First Week With VHL
I wanted to come on here and talk about my experience in my first week with the VHL and joining in the off-season.

First of all, there's a lot of stuff going on at this time that I don't understand regarding drafts, signings, and trades. Really, I don't need to understand them, but with the GMs preoccupied with that, I was more or less left to navigate the forums and portal alone (a pretty daunting task). While I did join the Discord eventually and was met with a warm reception and offers to answer questions I might have, I decided I was already in it and fully immersed myself in figuring this thing out. I'm happy to say that after a week, it really is pretty organized and if you read a couple of guides, also easy to navigate.

Following a guide by @Hogan I was able to really sink my teeth into how to earn TPE and am proud to say that, with this article, I should be at 19 TPE this week (both capped and uncapped, I learned that too). As the weeks go by that should become even easier to navigate and hopefully be a piece of cake.

As for the members of the VHL, everyone that I've talked to so far has been wonderful. They have been happy to answer any questions that I've had and guide me to make sure I'm as successful as I want to be.

Overall, this place is great! The whole thing has been a brand-new experience for me and I'm looking to keep it going. Thank you everyone for the warm reception. Now let's bring on season 93!

    1. Which sock do you put on first, right or left?
Right sock first, always the right sock

    2. Are you left handed or right handed when signing autographs? And is that different than the way you shoot a hockey stick?
Right-handed when writing, left-handed shot in hockey. Interestingly enough though, I throw with my left for some reason and have a twin that does the exact opposite on all of those.

    3. After hockey, what is the best sport or competitive hobby (aka golf/curling)?
I'm pretty into pickleball right now, and that gets pretty competitive for all ages so I'll go with that for now.

    1. Are you a night owl or a morning person?
    2. Do you eat breakfast every morning?
    3. What's your favourite cereal (and why is it Cinnamon Toast Crunch)?

Hogan reacted to ace_five_ in The Biography of Up-and-Comer Andrew Skilton
As the son of a farmer in Palmerston, Ontario, Canada, Andrew Skilton was destined to be an athlete. From a young age, Andrew dreamed of becoming a professional football player, with the end goal being the NFL. Each day he would wake up with the sun to complete his chores on the farm before heading to school for the day. Once home, Andrew would be running drills until the light had disappeared from the yard and be forced to go inside. This was easy in the spring and summer months, but the snow came early each year and he would have to transition his efforts to his second love, hockey. Throughout the long winter months, Andrew's schedule wouldn't change, his cleats would be replaced by skates and a puck would take the place of his football. It wasn't until Andrew was about 14 years old that he realised his progression in hockey was coming along much faster than football because of the amount of time he was able to practice. It was at this time that he decided to transition primarily to hockey and make his new goal the NHL.

Andrew's late realization meant he was behind the other kids his age in his development. While he hit his growth spurt early and was physically much larger than the other players, his skills left something to be desired. He didn't let that stop his motivation though. Instead of training in the summer for football, Andrew began focusing solely on improving his skills on the ice, although the ice wasn't available. He would stand on the small patch of concrete in front of the garage and stick handle for hours. He would fire pucks from that same spot down the driveway into a net, and the surrounding yard, until he couldn't anymore. Andrew was improving rapidly too, until a serious wrist injury sidelined him for almost an entire calendar year when he was 16 years old.

The road to recovery after his wrist injury was long and unforgiving. Andrew often had to take days, and sometimes weeks, off to make sure he didn't regress too much. He would push himself too hard to return to the level he was at before his injury that he would end up causing another small injury. His development slowed, meaning his chance at junior hockey was thinning quickly and his professional prospects along with it. At the age of 18, Andrew finally transitioned to a lighter training regiment that would focus on strengthening the weaker aspects of his game, both physically and skill-wise. He turned his focus to Europe and trained with the long road ahead in mind.

In just a year, Andrew was trying out for teams in Switzerland and Germany. Weeks were spent in and out of arenas and hotels, trying out for as many teams as he could. He put in his best effort, but was rejected every team, each giving him a variation that said he just wasn't ready yet. Demoralised, Andrew returned home to Canada wondering if his dream of becoming a professional hockey player was over. He spent weeks going over the film of each of his tryouts, scrutinizing every detail to learn what went wrong. With this knowledge he began another new training regiment.

Day in and day out, Andrew trained. A year went by without a call from scouts despite his efforts to get a hold of them. Andrew didn’t let this get him down though, and he continued his schedule as he had his whole life. After another six months, he finally got the call, the Malmö Redhawks were looking for a big stay-at-home defenceman who could neutralize the talent coming up in Sweden. Andrew boarded a plane the following week and after only two days of tryouts, was awarded a spot on the team.

Andrew’s time with Malmö were the best of his hockey career. He quickly picked up the language in order to communicate better with his teammates and got along with each and every one of them. In his third season with the team he was promoted to associate captain, an honour and privilege showcasing his leadership abilities and work ethic. His dedication to his craft and his unique training regiment also proved to be a valuable asset to the team, as he only missed a total of four regular season games in his four seasons, as well as helping his comerades to prevent and recover from injuries. Throughout his four years with the Swedish team, Andrew played 204 games, scoring 13 goals and adding 55 assists while playing an average of 18:22 minutes a night. What really stood out were his defensive capabilities, displaying an impressive +121 total and a whopping 588 blocked shots for his team.

Finally, learning of the VHL at the age of 25, Andrew has decided to take his talents to the upcoming VHLM draft and apply everything he’s learned in his young career!

    2. A little bit of everything overall, but I think a big focus right now is scoring.
    3. Sadly we lost in the first round of the playoffs, but regular season wise I joined the team late and we had a decent time.
    4. I like the idea and I think it's great for the newer players, especially first gens.
    5. Anything I can get my hands on.
    6. Max out and play in the VHLM while hoarding up TPE. Then hopefully make my VHL debut in season 94.

    RED= Capped
    GREEN= Uncapped

The first generation bonus is a free uncapped 10 TPE that you can earn once you hit 100 TPE. All you have to do is make a post and link it.

Edit: March 4th 2024, added job pay
