but did it really take until this for people to have issue with rory as gm

when you have a guy whose entire personality is some combination of "troll everyone always" and "disagree with every action done by anyone with even the slightest bit of power, just for the sake of doing so" and hasn't the slightest capability of seriousness... is this a gm?

Yeaaaaaaaahhhh. It's still 2 people out of 37 too so it's only minority right now lol

  2. In regards to @fromtheinside point about us identifying a problem and finding the solution.

We may have identified a problem, but I believe there is a greater problem at play. IF retention is an issue, in the current system we have, then that falls on the mGMs.

Referring to the survey posted by Alex:

What do you think could be done better to help retention?

The number 1 answer was firing GMs who do a poor job.

Is there anything the league does right now that could potentially hurt retention?

The number 1 answer was having quiet GMs and that GMs should be role models.

I think the point here is that we’ve identified a problem and our solutions are different. I don’t believe in an idea that a group of people do the job of a VHLM GM and not be the GM of said team.

83% of the 52 survey respondents said they'd like a team of mentors to serve as resources if their GM/AGM isn't around. I think that's significant enough for us to at least look into the logistics of how it would work. I think with a mentor program, we'd even be able to track which teams are slacking off, if a bunch of their players are reaching out to mentors constantly. And not even just limited to the M, I think having identifiable guidance members could help in the E as well, where retention is not looking very hot.

This concept of the mentorship program really isn’t a bad idea. Especially because they’re only there to support those players when the GM/AGM aren’t around which incites that the management group of each team is doing their job. This does give us an insight into who is performing well or isn’t.

To be fair, I don't think any of our VHLM GMs is unaware that they need to be mentors to the new members. I can make a post to remind them, but I don't think this is the issue here. I think this was just an idea to add extra members that would be dedicated to help the new members, without having the interest of their own team in the back of their head.

So, heres what I'm confused about. A VHLM GM is there to help new members with their players career goals, how to earn and how to build. Why would new players need someone new who's unbiased? Naturally, GM's should be aligned with that new player in order to retain them and push them into the VHL/E. I don't really see the bias because the VHLM GM job and the objective of that new player are aligned. So if every single GM is offering (which they should be [unless they literally have 0 roster space] because they want to be pushing more players through to the next draft because DING DING DING that is actually their role in this entire situation) on every player, there shouldn't be any bias at all. If there is, those GM's really should not be GM's IMO.

All this told me was that we want members to help tell new members which VHLM team to go to because certain GM's are better than others and that VHLM GM's can't be trusted to pitch these players properly.

A welcoming program is a decent idea only for the sake of when recruitment phases are large as hell and VHLM GM/AGM's aren't available during that time. They shouldn't be depended on every single day. Just something for when we know we have a huge wave potentially coming in and only to help navigate members on how to do basic stuff like navigate the site, the portal and how to see their offers. Beyond this, really, is the VHLM GM/AGM's job and I don't think it's right that we infringe on their responsibilities.

I'm not against a mentorship program, because why not, but I've never viewed GMing as even the slightest bit separate from mentoring and I think if we have a mentoring problem (have we even established that we do?), then we have a GM problem as well.

I think the only issue I have with having a mentorship program is that it means that theres a larger problem within the VHLM. VHLM GM's need to told what their role is. If they, as a collective, understand their role then we have our mentorship program.

  5. I'm not trying to be an old boomer here. I'm just failing to understand how an entire job that is dedicated to mentorship to new members is somehow being treated as a job that wasn't supposed to be that way?

VHLM GM's are supposed to be helping new members, retaining them and pushing them through to the draft. That is literally the entire definition of their pay. Otherwise, please tell me what other responsibilities they have?

  6. Can someone explain to me how this wouldn't be entirely the role that mGM's have? I mean, isn't that their entire role? To help new members learn how to earn TPE and to get them into a system that helps them earn TPE on a consistent basis (AKA retention)?

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm failing to see the need for this considering this is entirely what the mGM job is supposed to be. Problem is we have VHLM GM's who have this approach:

I think most VHLM GM's are there to get experience and eventually get a VHLE/VHL job (that was my goal), they aren't really there to be a bonafide rookie mentor.

That said, I understand that in the context of this past draft, any policy change could (and will) certainly come across as "oh look, they punished Rory but admitted they're right", and I have a hard time believing that we wouldn't have to deal with a crusade or two. I'm ultimately OK with it if we don't do this, but that's not to say I'm not in favor of it.

I think something has to change with the GM rule, but I think no matter what we all come out with, it can't come out at least for another 5-6 seasons just due to this.

What would be wrong with making GM player selections expensive as hell? Something like, okay, if you really want your player, it's a two firsts?

Just a flat idea thats all.

We have found a house. Finally, we have found a house. And in the midst of all of this, training camp started yesterday. My team is covering the entire moving process however we just have our suitcases. We found a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom penthouse that is fully furnished. The home is exquisite actually, and we're super glad we could get a place like this due to the teams residential stipend. They are actually paying for the entire home, which I mean is a huge dub. They're paying for every players home in this building as well. So I mean, it actually worked out. One condo building for us all, I say. Unless, you're from Stockholm, you get to stay at your own house. We are most excited about the fact that it is just 2 blocks away from the training facility, there is a bus that takes us in the mornings to the facility so we're never late and we're just a 2 block walk away in the evening so we can get a few extra training sessions. Plus, theres this cute coffee shop just next door that is absolutely tasty. We usually stop in there for coffee before we load into the bus.

  10. Review:

You sound like a lot of fun. The subject you chose to write on and how you got there (with the rubber ducky being the main interviewer) was actually quite funny and light. Formatting-wise, I mean, the additions I would've included is centring the entire article, bolding instead of italicizing and a picture or two. Besides that, I think this was a great article to read and you have a lot of potential to grow into a great writer for this league.

I really like the concept of recapping the draft and your mindset walking into the draft. Even live thoughts, you could say, was interesting to say the least. I was expecting Riiga to go ahead with Steve but wasn't so surprised to see you walk away with a different player. The only true way to improve this piece is to organize it better. If we centred it with some bigger spaces between the paragraphs and it would be an easier read overall.

9/10 but could very easily have been 10/10.
