    Recruitment.

People associate recruitment with what a coach, a GM, a franchise needs to do in order to gain a commitment from a player. Following that line of thinking, recruitment ends when that person signs on the dotted line.

I'd challenge that notion. Recruitment is an always on activity, especially for coaches and general managers in this kind of league, where member engagement leads to earning which leads to success on the rink. The front office cannot lapse in its engagement with its team members, because:

    - an engaged member will earn, will contribute, can be built around
    - an unengaged member is always at risk. At risk of leaving the team in free agency, demanding a trade, or leaving the enter VHL universe in general

Recruiting doesn't take extraordinary effort. What it takes is above-average communication, a skill lost on most front offices in any number of simulation leagues. Frankly being a strong communicator is lost on most of America and most of its work force. In Lattimer's particular situation, I've experienced the good and the bad of the communication spectrum.

The good: Janser and company took an unmolded piece of clay in myself and shaped it into a productive member of the league. That wasn't by accident. It was by intention, their intention to maximize a player whom was not much of a self-starter but certainly willing to put effort in when asked and when guided.

Most recently, Lattimer's current team is getting a free ride on Janser still being communicative and maximizing Lattimer for the good of the league, given I no longer play for Calgary. But he wants VHL to thrive and so, despite Lattimer not having heard at all from his teammates or GM, Lattimer continues to earn and be a relatively productive member of the league.

This should not be the case, being successful in spite of shitty management.

    ABR.
    Always

    Recruiting

Even the very act of writing this post is a testament to what good, sound, consistent recruiting looks like. It is the kind of communication and effort that has made Lattimer outright hope and request that he goes back to Calgary. It is the kind of effort that is illustrated when Lattimer does press conferences for his old team instead of his new team. It is illustrated in that his former teammates and GMs are telling Lattimer how he's performing in the league, despite the fact that Lattimer is now their opponent.

And it's the absence of continued recruitment that puts Lattimer's future in the VHL at tremendous risk. Steve has said on the record that he does not think he will continue in the league much past this point, especially given his owner's retirement from the SBA. Right now, the only thing keeping him engaged in VHL is Janser, to be honest. Someone who is willing to earn, but will only do so if prompted, is completely dependent on one or few people to maximize his skills and attention. His current front office is not doing that.

Will Lattimer just disappear soon? The possibility is strong, if not likely.

    Unless he's recruited.

As you may have noticed from the TPE bans that have been handed out recently, AI use in point tasks is becoming a bit of an issue. I would just like to remind you all that using these tools in an attempt to earn TPE is against the VHL Code of Conduct, as stated below:

Our lovely crew of updaters will also be taking this matter more seriously, and will begin to use detection tools before approving submissions.  This goes for both AI generated media spot content AND graphics.

Thank you all for understanding, I know AI tech is moving at an exponential rate and is an amazing resource, however maintaining the integrity of the league and an even playing field for all members is paramount.

-Having a team who are all active and involved in recruitment would be a good start!

-Lean on what’s worked in the past such as YouTube ads, reaching out to Reddit accounts for posts, emailing out old members to return.

-Coming up with new ideas to try while still holding on to the core recruitment strategies. Then replacing those core strategies if you find something that works better.

I’m just gunna add my two sense, not that it matters but I wanted to share my experience as a previous Recruitment Team Member.

When I was apart of the Recruitment Team I had a hard time dealing with the lack of commitment from other team members. I put together every YouTube drive, every Reddit attempt (even in the current state of how things are with the VHL and Reddit), I also did a lot of posting on social media, put together Instagram ads, etc. I honestly earned the TPE I claimed for that job.

I did not feel the rest of the team put in nearly the same amount of effort and it got frustrating to the point where I’d blow up on the team and then everyone started to chip in and help. This would only last a few weeks and then fizzle out again, rinse and repeat. This is the real reason I stepped away from the team.

Recruitment should be a job that’s held by people who don’t hold any other jobs. It takes commitment and requires a lot of personal time to make it successful. Now juggle being a GM and any other job a team member might have on top that.

I agree with the overall message that Zetterberg is trying to get across, despite the delivery. Recruitment has no focus and has become a real problem and this problem has been festering for a long time. I hope this leads to positive change for the team and for the league.

Sweet article! It's been featured on our IG story today! 🔥

As the only person who has been posting on our Instagram account since August 2023, I apologize for doing such a poor job and not meeting the VHL'S expectations. I thought featuring the work done by our members would not only help retain, but also recognize the hard work put in by our members as well as possibly help build our social media presence by catching users eyes. Daily posts and stories on Instagram have slowed down, including player of the week stats and weekly standings due to burnout and it being too much for one person to coordinate and build on each week.

We are working on getting a YouTube ad in place before the trade deadline if possible. We will be assessing the use of social media altogether.

I hope that you were not insulted by how I've used your graphics on the VHL Instagram account. If you were in anyway offended let me know and I can remove your posts.

In the meantime I hope you enjoy your article being featured as today's story. With a "sloppy" resize, an "unprofessional" filter and catchy tune to bring in the masses.

    2. They only have one player over 571 TPE so it's pretty surprising that they're getting so much sim luck.
    3. I haven't really necessarily been surprised by anyone with what I've seen so far.
    4. I would say he is easily a top-2 GM on this team

Is there any real reason why this needs to be its own job? Why not give one of the existing updaters the additional duty of having final say on any flags. There's like five of us that have been doing this for 2+ years, any one of us could do that just fine for the what, 2-5 updates each week that may need a final input?

Ricer!  I am going to crit your work on this one cause I like it and because I got a trivia wrong, but mostly because I like it!  You've done two graphics here worthy of 6 TPE each but I appreciate when people go above and beyond the typical.  The horizontal "card" style graphic in the BG is very cool.  The Americans logo overlaid on the city of New York provides a lot of saturation to the colors.  The away jersey swap is perfectly done as well as the number change.  Only thing I might add to the BG image is a inner shadow or inner glow of black to mimic the shadows of the grey BG and make it appear to have been cut out of the grey BG.  The FG players jersey and number swap is top notch again and not having red anywhere on the home jersey other than the logo is actually pretty nice!  I like the idea!  Text is awesome and though some might not agree with me, I like when I can hardly ready a signature.  More realistic usually!  FG player cutout could be a bit cleaner and the resolution of everything could be a bit higher but you use what you can find and I understand.  8/10!
