Boomcheck got a reaction from Corco in Claimed: Devereux Race [1/2]
    One Horse Race

The race for the Devereux trophy is always the most interesting and there are a variety of factors that go into this. From back in the day, usually the goaltenders with the most amount of effort put in would compete for this award but things have changed a bit since the league's contractions. Less teams and more players create better parity and difficulty for even the hardest working of players to get through. I don't expect earth shattering numbers this year, but any solid performance should be enough to put this award away with relative ease. The 56th season is still young, but lets take a look at who will be contending for this award so early on.

    Ike Arkander - Ottawa

The front runner for the award this season, in fact ... There's no contest thus far. He has the best save percentage in the league by far. They aren't Apollo Skye numbers but the VHL drafted prospect has shown definite improvement in his game and will look to take over completely at the VHLM level. Is he the best? Yeah, by a mile. He's my favorite to win this award. Seven wins in nine games? Looking like a smooth year for the Swedish net minder. He has yet to record a shut out but as stated before,  there is a lot of time for him to rack those up like VHLM goalies of the past.

    Shawn Brodeur - LV

My dark horse --- One that is trailing behind Arkander by quite a bit BUT ... He's been updating and that's key. Improvement over the season will show immediate gains and success, his next set of starts should prove to be something special if he can get his engine up and running. He has a unique set of skills and is not some cookie cutter goaltender like Arkander-- I like off the wall projects so i'm a fan of his .... Regardless, I doubt he catches Arkander but the season started recently and there are a lot of games still to be played. It wouldn't be the first time a goaltender's performance falters near the end of a season so young Brodeur has a shot. Keep at it!

I don't see anyone else contending, but I would love to see them prove me wrong. O'Tarth would be third, but the other two have way better teams around them at the moment-- At least in terms of results. Having a solid team is only half of the equation but I can definitely see this sleeper waking up and shocking some scouts. Brodeur and Arkander will have the support of fire power and likely get favorable match ups but they have both risen up to the occasion when called for. There is a surplus of goaltenders if you look across both leagues, but I don't see anyone else in the VHLM challenging unless they are willing to put in the effort to improve.

Am I back? Nope, not really.

On the SHL i'll probably just be claiming activity checks and training while here i'll be doing much of the same. It all boils down to one common factor and that's school. To be honest I probably wouldn't have thought about coming back until Corco planted the seed in my head and asked me to returned a few weeks back. My players were never all that great, but they had their moments. Well ... Fisher/Taylor were straight busts. Both centers so maybe I should stay away from those. The Shielders are a bit interesting--- I did earn more than 3 TPE on the first one, just my updates didn't go in since we swapped over to a different site back then. Both were promising but they left me unfulfilled since goaltenders can be quite one dimensional. My wingers have been my best (but boomcheck, both ur wingers were like 199-350 tpe). Bravehart had a crazy one hit wonder season in the regular season, I was legit tearing it up. Rhinehart was special in his own way-- The player I used to figure out the VHL's formula on how to create a solid player. Pretty sure I ended my career in Seattle with the biggest surprise championship in league history, top 10 in goals for Seattle and the franchise leader in hits. Not so bad for a 350ish TPE player right?

My goaltender will be meh. Still, i'll see if I can win a VHLM best goaltender award.

It's been a rocky eight seasons for me with Rhinehart as the final chapter closed when Calgary missed the post-season. I pretty much wanted to spend most of my player's career with one team so I could set some franchise records. I knew I wouldn't be able to make a HOF caliber player but there was a chance I could make a player decent enough that could get their number retired. Rhinehart was definitely a compiler of sorts, even with a championship ring, and the fact that i'm the only one from the team that was able to stick around for a long time. It was a complete surprise, the year we won the championship but I am glad that we were able to scrape together one. Rhinehart is also one of the best fantasy forwards for how much he would cost, so my player happened to be very TPE efficient. It's also funny that Seattle was thinking about doing another rebuild, trading me and a few other pieces in the off-season before we won the cup. Edged out Higgins for #1 in hits as Seattle's new franchise record so that's also sweet. Doubt I get my number retired but it was fun spending 7 seasons with the Bears, having three 40+ goal seasons in a row and absolutely crushing people. Was also an honor being the Captain, even if I was really inactive. Bushito may not have ever really trusted me in any capacity but I am also grateful that he drafted me to such a class organization.

Toronto and Seattle at the Draft
The end of the VHL season is near, with Calgary holding a 3-1 series lead on Helsinki in the VHL Finals. With that in mind, attention is turning towards the off-season, and the VHL Entry Draft is sure to be a hot topic over the next few weeks. For the draft's top prospects, the big question is whether they will end up on Toronto or Seattle, owners of eight of the ten first-round picks (including the top five).
For both teams, the cupboard is mostly barren. The situation is slightly more dire in Toronto, but they also have the luxury of the having three of the top five picks, including first overall. Seattle has the benefit of a few prospects who may pan out, but they have a slightly worse draft outlook. Here's a look at where each team stands and how they might improve in the draft.

    Toronto
Currently, the only prospect in Toronto's system that is even close to becoming a reliable VHL player is Max Molholt, who is closely related to the Legion's general manager, Mike Molholt. They have no current VHL players or VHLM prospects outside of Molholt who are actively improving, and that led to their historically awful showing this past season. That said, they do have five picks in the first round of a draft class that is outwardly quiet, yet full of potential. In addition to their own first pick, they own the picks of Stockholm (third overall), Quebec (fifth), Davos (seventh), and Calgary (likely tenth). Unfortunately for them, there are few goaltenders in the class at all, and the only one with any sort of potential, Cooper Supernaw, has tailed off in recent weeks. It's likely that most of their picks will spend another season in the VHLM, with the exception of likely first pick Zach Parechkin, so they'll be able to drive at another poor season with a roster of VHL plugs while hoping that a top-notch goaltender makes himself available for the next draft.

    Seattle
For as bad as Toronto was, Seattle was even worse, only managing 11 wins and 25 points for the season. Unlike Toronto, however, they have a goaltender in Ryan Price who has at least shown up in recent weeks. It remains to be seen whether or not he'll put in the necessary effort to become a reliable goalie in the majors, but he's a lot closer than anyone Toronto has a chance at. Seattle also has a young player with close ties to the GM, in this case defender Arcturus Mengsk. On the downside, they only have three firsts in the draft: their own (second), Cologne's (fourth), and Helsinki's (likely ninth). Fortunately for them, the draft is fairly heavy in forwards, and that's what they need. There are a few targets they should have a shot at with all of their picks that could become high-impact players, or they could snatch a defenseman to pair with Mengsk for a shutdown tandem over the next several seasons. Pete Stockton and Shawn Muller are likely targets early on, while Jory Rose and Leandre St. Pierre could be picked at the end of the round or at the top of the second.
All in all, neither team is in an ideal scenario, but they should be able to put together a good draft and field a productive team within two seasons. They should hope that the talent pool for the next season is a little deeper and includes a sure-thing in net. This draft, however, should give them both a good foundation on offense and defense.
