kesytamm reacted to IamMOOSE in MONEY REWORK
Back on June 15, 2020 (which in pandemic years is about 80 years ago) I made a post calling for reinstitution of Branding & Sponsorships in the VHL. Branding and thus sponsorships had been an aspect of the experience before, but was marred by tournaments, convoluted formats, and generally overreached on its complexity. I had created and then condensed a media spot (https://vhlforum.com/topic/85492-rebranding-brandingsponsorship/) discussing potential ways to revival and rebuild the Branding/Sponsorship system. IT was meant as an icebreaker to begin the conversation surrounding it. From there we saw some comments, some counterpoints, some reactions, and a lot of discussion post-writing in the forums and on Discord that painted a larger picture, not only describing, but going in depth on where these talks of Branding, Sponsorship, Player Stores, Salaries, and money in general should really begin.

I want to first look at the problem. Money. It isn’t the fault of anyone in particular, not the Admins of this league, the creators of the sim engine, even big companies like EA or 2K struggle with it. Money, contracts, and the cashflow of any league and its players is vital to the success it breeds from a real-world aspect. However, aside from salary caps for teams and maybe some light boosters or depreciation blockers, it serves no real function on a gaming level. It doesn’t really matter who has the most cash in this league, as player, beyond a few items to stop player depreciation, there’s not much long-term use for your cash. It’s a problem that plagues all sports games unfortunately.

Today I want to layout the blueprint for what money in the VHL could be, what it maybe one day will be. In this program, we’ll go through the three phases of a potential rework. First, we’ll cover Player/Member cash, contracts, job pay, and the Player Store. Next, we’ll discuss the new content that we would find for purchase in the newly upgraded store and how that affects your page as a Member. We will then move on to phase two, where we will discuss an idea of an additional profile feature such as the “Showroom” page. And finally, phase three where we will discuss Branding/Sponsorships in full under the new system and what that would mean for players.

    PHASE ONE

Cash as of now is tied to specific players and is washed as that player retires. This makes sense from a player standpoint but does nothing for the Member/Agency behind that player. Right now, there’s no need for it to. What I’d like to propose here is that we instead tie cash to the Member, not the player. This would mean that cash would be linked to IamMoose as the Member as opposed to Kevin King. Meaning when King retires, that money would remain, or some of it at least. The reason for this would be to have cash for the new store which we’ll get to in a bit. The reason I say some is because I think It’s only fair to implement a fee on this. As a Member, you’re only able to claim 10% of the player’s total remaining earnings, the other 90% is removed. This would mean a player with say, $14 Million left at the point of retirement that Member receives $1.4 million.

The reason we would have cash rollover with Members is for upgrades you’d find in the new store. Members will have this cash to use for the new Player Store. The new store would not only feature all of the familiar content of this league but would now feature new cosmetic content that ties into your profile and your showroom (we’ll get to that). This content would be designed, much like the original MySpace (yes, I’m old, fuck off) where it’s mainly cosmetic as a way to showoff your profile and your history as a member of this league. With some great web designers in this league and a system that’s worked on a much larger scale, I believe in the VHL team to come up with some fancy page layouts, borders, and backgrounds that would enhance the visual aspects of the Member pages.

You would use your accumulated cash to purchase some of these items, even earning some special one for championship wins, individual accolade, and special events. As a result of this, contracts may get a bit heavier, job pay may now include or exclusively payout in cash, and finally Branding and Sponsorship would have a tremendous need to supply in the VHL. With added bonuses from Branding/Sponsorships, contracts, and other payouts, it would stimulate an entirely new economy to the league, even affording job opportunities to those who want to be content creators for the store.

    PHASE TWO

Now that we’ve briefly outlined some of this, let’s go more in depth with the store and what I’, calling the “Showroom”.

The Player Store would not only supply Members with cosmetics for their profiles, but this also opens for the opportunity to allow for a showroom. A page, specifically designed for Members to show off previous player(s) records, trophies earned, milestones, and other items acquired throughout their time in the VHL. The store can now account for other cosmetics like cars, mansions, memorabilia, and other items. Want a Viper, a Porsche, or a Ferrari get one from the store (No, I’m not expecting anyone to animate a specific car into a background or a room, simple graphics are just fine, I’m not a psychopath on this). Need a tank (Moose needs a tank), the Player Store. From there you can purchase your cosmetic items that will appear on your profile in the Showroom. The Showroom should also display some league related stuff. Links to your former player’s career statistics and records, trophies you’ve earned over the course of your career, and even some tags and comments from other players if they so choose to leave some kind words about the Member or player (worth maybe 1 uncapped TPE with a max of 3 claims???).

It’s all meant to enhance the Member experience. It’s another aspect of the VHL that can add significant character depth to Members who want to show off their personalities and gives people a reason to not only make money but can further incentivize the community nature of the league. It promotes activity, and further rewards that community activity with more personal effects.

    PHASE THREE

Now, under this new system we can revisit Branding and Sponsorships. Under this new system, Branding would have a major place in the VHL. Sponsorships would allow players to earn extra cash for various Brand related tasks given in their contract during the season. This increases the cash flow in the league, giving players more prestige, Members more cash, and Brands a bigger spotlight. We’ve talked a lot before about brands but how would it really work?

Branding/Sponsorships would only involve cash and thus would only payout in cash. Brands are run by three people:

The President/CEO – Who controls the Brand, it’s interests, and the contracts given. They also employ the other two positions: Marketing & Public Relations Manager and Brand Representative.

Marketing & PR Manager – In charge of producing articles and content for the brand. They control the marketing of the brand. New logo, chances are the Marketing Manager made it. New article detailing the brands latest incentives and packages, the PR Manager wrote it. The control the Brand’s image.

Brand Representative – Brand Representatives attract players to the Brand. They will go through the list of players provided by the AGMs for each team and try and attract players to join the brand. Once they have a player interested in joining the brand, the President/CEO, along with the Representative will make the offer for that player to decide to sign.

Instead of tournaments and convoluted formats, AGMs (yes, AGMs) would submit a player list of about 3-4 players from their team they feel deserve sponsorship. From that list, a Brand Representative will approach the player or players they choose and will attempt to recruit them. Once a player accepts, they will iron out a contract from that brand and the player will decide whether or not to sign the deal. For obvious reasons, all brand deals must be approved by the league. These contracts usually will include target goals, content they want the player to produce, and/or some other incentives to gear players towards the brand’s awareness and impact.

For example, a rookie player like Micah Adrienne (hi @poptart) would sign with a brand such as Konecny Goods, an equipment brand. They would payout say $3,000,000 over the course of 2 seasons. The contract is structured for a $1,000,000 payment for s73 and a $2,000,000 payout for s74. Because Micah is such a high pick, there may be a cancellation clause where termination would still require a $500,000 payout to terminate on the Brand’s behalf or a $1,000,000 fine for breach of contract of Adrienne’s side, but that’s for another time.

The way contracts are executed involve the contract details. There are brand expectations and brand incentives. Brand expectations are tasks that are required by the brand. Failure to complete them results in a breach of contract which we talked about briefly above. Brand incentives are tasks that upon completion grants additional compensation to the player for completing the task. For our example, Micah Adrienne’s sponsorship would include expectations such as:

    -       Recording at least 200 hits during the s73 and s74 seasons.
    -       Submitting one VHL.com article relating to Konecny Goods per season.
    -       Raising PA to minimum 70 by the end of the end of the season (s73).

However, they wouldn’t end here. Micah could earn additional compensation for other tasks associated with the contract like:

    -       Sterling Labatte Trophy Win ($500,000)
    -       Finishing top 3 in rookie voting ($250,000)
    -       Recording 100 points over the course of seasons 73 and 74 ($75,000)

Brands give way to Sponsorships which adds an almost side quest element to the league. We’ve discussed before how details of a sponsorship could influence player moves, allocation of TPE, and now how the added funds even out in a new format of cash and cosmetics within the league. It would take some time and some ironing to the process to make it flow seamlessly into the league structure, but again, we’ve opened the door here.

    CLOSING

We’ve covered a lot of bases here. At this point we are 1,700 words in and there’s so much more left off the table to get to. In short, more visual, and long-term content can create a new economy for the VHL. Money can mean more than it does on any sports game and simulation. There’s space and opportunity to put some great minds in this league to work and open the door for more content and creators to showcase their skills. With Showrooms, we can give the Member experience and upgrade without compromising the integrity of the sim or the player creation. By applying what we have with what tools we can use, we can take the store from being a depreciation cache to a shopping center. Branding and Sponsorships can provide new wrinkles to free agency, contracts, and even player building. Profiles can get a touchup in a unique and creative way that no other league I imagine provides. It’s a long jump but this is a great second step. I will continue to work on this and continue to bring new eyes to these ideas. I’m always open to questions and comments. I want to hear from everyone. Please leave a comment, a react, and tell us what you think of all this. Thank you for your time. This is almost 2,000 words. Fuck me, I think I need a hobby. lol

Special thanks to @Pengu for being a creative mastermind!

    #25 - #21

It's been an eventful off-season for the VHL, with four brand new teams entering the fold. But with the expansion draft and VHL Entry Draft over, training camps have opened once again. A new season is just around the corner and the Riga Reign are ready to defend their status as VHL Champions, which means it's time once again for another staple of the VHL off-season: the VSN's Top 25! With eight different members of VSN contributing towards ranking the Top 25 this season (@FrostBeard, @Doomsday, @Erik Summers, @Patrik Tallinder, @Hylands, @rjfryman, @Matt_O, and @Berocka) and featuring write-ups from Doomsday, hylands, @Mr_Hatter, Patrik Tallinder and @diamond_ace, VSN's annual ranking of the Top 25 players in the VHL is here! As the league waits for the new season to begin, we'll count down from #25 all the way to #1, in the course of segments of five players. So, let's get started with #25, a member of the aforementioned VHL Champions...

    25. LW - Patrik Tallinder
    Season 72: Unranked

The list begins with not only a new entrant into the Top 25 but also a new entrant into the ranks of Continental Cup winners. With a career-high 63 points, Patrik Tallinder helped the Riga Reign to a quick, lopsided playoff run en route to the cup. This was a career year for Tallinder in most stats, with more goals than ever before, tied for the same assist total as last season, more shots, more shot blocks, more power-play goals, and fewer minutes spent in the penalty box. The one exception is his hit count has gone down season upon season - early in his career, he showed flashes of a physical game, but as his career has gone on he’s dropped that in favour of a higher scoring game. Given that trajectory, and on a team such as Riga, Tallinder could be poised to break out even more in the upcoming season since Riga should yet again be a top team, and Tallinder is in his prime.

    24. D - Cinnamon Block
    Season 72: 21

S69’s first overall pick finds herself falling a bit in the rankings this year, but not by any fault of her own. Block followed up a fantastic breakout season in S71 with an even better S72 season. Despite a small drop in goal scoring, the Prague defender put up a notable 56 more hits, as well as 39 more shots blocked. Early on in her career, her game seemed to cater more towards defence. However, after her rookie season, she saw her defensive numbers dip a bit while her offence progressed. In S72, Cinnamon Block really started to see a nice balance between elite-level offensive and defensive play with the aforementioned stats. As soon as this season, we could be looking at a Labatte candidate because of just how little weaknesses she shows in her game nowadays. There’s no right answer to the question of whether offence or defence wins championships, so why not cover both bases with a defender like Block.
    - Patrik Tallinder

    23. D - Roque Davis
    Season 72: Unranked

Entering into our preseason Top 25 rankings for the first time, we have the young Davos defenseman, Roque Davis. Davis has already achieved more than many players, and with only two seasons under his belt, he has a lot of time left to make his mark on the league. Following a fantastic performance in the VHLM with San Diego that saw him earning top defensemen while leading the league in assists and points, Davis had big expectations in his first season in the VHL. Playing on a Davos team that finished bottom of the league, Davis found himself as the key playmaker for the team as a rookie, and he failed to disappoint. Finishing with 69 points, he was tied for 3rd out of defensemen, but his astounding 25 goals lead the league out of defensemen and netted him not only the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy for top rookie but also the Alexander Valiq Trophy for top offensive defenseman. This past season, with a much-improved team alongside him, Davis shifted away from the role of goal-scorer and focused more on his playmaking, earning 14 more assists at the cost of 10 fewer goals. His 73 points, while not enough to earn him silverware in a season with star-studded defensive performances, showcases his solid output, as he remained in the top 25 for points. With the majority of his career ahead of him, we can’t wait to see what Davis does next!
    - Hatter

    22. C - Benny Graves
    Season 72: Unranked

Now entering his fifth season, D.C. Dragons lifer Benny Graves, drafted second overall in Season 69 (nice), makes his debut on the VSN Top 25 after posting career-highs across the board in Season 72. Although he's been a remarkably consistent talent so far in his career, scoring 28 goals two seasons in a row in Seasons 70 and 71, he broke through with 37 goals in Season 72. Finishing with 74 points, Graves averaged over a point per game in what was a tremendously disappointing season for the Dragons. With a versatile skill set, Graves is a player that's simply dangerous anywhere on the ice. He's a threat to score, he's not afraid to hit, he's a wizard in the faceoff circle and became a major weapon on the power play with 12 man-advantage goals. If D.C. can figure out how to bust out of the rut they're in, Benny Graves could be a household name by the end of the season.
    - Doomsday

    21. RW - Owen Nolan
    Season 72: 24

Jumping up a few spots from last year, on the back of a very good season with the New York Americans, we have the Irish winger, Owen Nolan. Nolan scored 40 goals and had 42 assists last season, for 82 points in 72 games. He upped his point production by nearly 10 points as the Americans benefited from some midseason acquisitions. The winger is quite versatile as a forward, boasting above-average face-off skills which allow him to be utilized both on the wing and at the centre. He has an incredible eye for goal and is seemingly able to score from anywhere on the ice. His shooting skill is nearly matched by his puck handling, which is what probably allows him to be so successful in the offensive zone, as he makes it seem like child’s play when he is at his best. Nolan is also a very responsible and reliable player in the defensive zone. His phenomenal skating ability comes in to play here; he is great on the backcheck and has all-around great hockey IQ. On an Americans team that is poised for another cup run, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nolan build on last season and have his numbers go up even further and potentially be among the top forwards for scoring come the end of the season.
    - hylands

Featuring three players brand new to the Top 25, the next generation is beginning to make their presence felt in the VHL! However, we're not done revealing players new to the Top 25! Along with three mainstays to this list, two brand new players will be joining the ranks of the VHL's Top 25 on the next segment! Stay tuned for #20 to #16 on our next article!

I really like this graphic as a whole! Very good job cutting out your render, I don't see any jagged edges and it is a great, clear image. I like the background, a pretty solid design and a good use of transparency with the logo to keep the render as the center of attention and pop. I like the text and font choice, but the first name is a little tough to see due to its color and font. Good use of color to stay cohesive.

    1. I mean, seems pretty solid to me! You got me to join, so that's a plus ?

    2. Yes, I'm really excited to be here. Twists is a homie on another team with me in a different league, so I'm extra hype to be here.

    3. Well I was not here to see it, but from what I've heard Miami got some solid players.

    4. I mean that's what teammates are for, right?

    5. I just want to grow consistently. I'm not expecting to be the best immediately, but I do want to get to the highest level in this league and stay there.

    6. I really enjoy writing. I've been in a slump for a little while, though, so maybe some new content with a new sport and new league will help me out!

    1. Oh man, I just got into the locker room so I haven't had a chance to get to see how well I play with certain guys. But I would have to say Sandstrom and Waters. I have a good feeling about what we could do together.

    2. Compared to the assistant GM, like a 2 or 3 MAX.

    3. I uh... I lost $1000 within minutes of getting into the first casino. True story. But other than that, I'm enjoying my time so far in the city.

    4. I want to be a champion at every level. I think winning means getting to that highest tier of success.

    Hey VHL @Members,

Today, Saturday July 18th, the VHL becomes a teenager, as it celebrates its 13th Birthday! We opened our doors in 2007, and it's been a hell of a ride getting here, as we have grown from a group of 56 members and 8 teams, to having over 200 players, and 28 teams, between the VHL and VHLM, in Season 73. Through it all, we've seen original members, who started with the league as teenagers themselves, grow into adults with families and jobs, and we've seen new members come in with that same enthusiasm that gripped every one of us when the league began. It's been an amazing ride, and it is amazing to see the league continue to grow each, and every season!

To commemorate the league's birthday, we are giving all members a Triples Week, which adds 12 Uncapped TPE to any 6-TPE Point Task (Welfare/Pension/Affiliate PT are not included), as well as a 1 Uncapped TPE claim. To claim these perks, which conveniently add up to 13 Uncapped TPE, all you need to do is post in this thread a memory you have from when you were 13. If you are not 13 yet, post something you look forward to when you turn 13.

    Note:
This thread will remain open until 11:59PM PST on Saturday, July 25th. Birthday perks may only be claimed on one player per member Birthday perks must be claimed by Sunday, August 16th (aka before the S73 Trade Deadline)

When I was 13, I started working out with the varsity baseball team as a junior high student. I was out of shape, but had played baseball my entire life up to that point. I ended up impressing the coach and being one of the only two sophomores to make the varsity team a few years later. I learned a lot about hard work, teamwork, and perseverance during that time. I have some problems with my memory nowadays, but I remember a lot about my baseball days.

After a night of drafting and setting up a roster for the upcoming season the coaches had one last attempt to see how their players can perform, matches are schedule and all draftees plus a selected number of VHLM players begin playing against each other.. 12 games go by and the games end, here's what the trainers of the Las Vegas Aces had to say about their players performances and future in the league

    C Tim Waters ??
Tall center that lacks size but makes up for it with his creative passing. He loves trying to make big plays and usually goes for the long bomb almost every game
    VHL Comparison: Nate Telker
    GP10 G1 A8 P9

    C Rhynex Entertainment ??
Strong on the puck and fierce around the dot, we should see a well-rooted, consistent center ready for each game with tons of room to grow
    VHL Comparison: Alex Pearson
    GP11 G4 A4 P8

    LW Chris Reynolds ??
Expect to see him parked in positions to score because his shot is always ready, wherever he is on the ice. Another skill of his is skating, pair that with his physical presence and you get a player willing to go the extra inch to win a battle on the boards
    VHL Comparison: Henrik Zoiderberg
    GP12 G10 A6 P16

    LW Mikael Jordon ??
Although he doesn't have any major skills we see an all-around flexible forward that can fill any cap and play extra minutes whenever teammates are tired
    VHL Comparison: Ben McGirr
    GP10 G3 A3 P6

    RW Onde Sanstrom ??
Tons of potential and skills that make it seem like he's two players on the ice, watch out or this player next season. He has the size and defensive ability to be a key player on both side of the ice, skating and puck handling that will help him team keep possession of the puck and has an itch to get a shot off anytime he has a chance
    VHL Comparison: ACL TEAR
    GP12 G13 A4 P17

    RW Gary Rush ??
Already drafted in the big league by Calgary we see a more mature player in the locker room with a history of producing points for the hometown crowd. Does a good job defending and keeping the puck out away from the goaltender, can play top line minutes without getting tired late in the game
    VHL Comparison: Erik Draven
    GP11 G9 A7 P16

    D Kasper Kankkunen ??
Reliable body with an ability to shoot through traffic, will most likely be waiting silently behind the action and fly into positions to score whenever he gets the chance
    VHL Comparison: Fredrik Elmebeck
    GP10 G6 A1 P7

    D Matt thunder ??
Just because this player is shorter than the average defender and hasn't showed up to practice much doesn't mean he can't be a threat when the other team least expects it, probably wont see a lot of him but don't count him out when he has a chance to score
    VHL Comparison: Gert B Frobe
    GP12 G2 A1 P3

    D Tony Jabroni ??
Strong, well-timed defensive efforts give him the space needed to make plays and react to things before they happen
    VHL Comparison: Rusty Shackleford
    GP12 G2 A3 P5

    D Gordon Sampson ??
Stay at home defender with excellent positioning, definitely somebody the coach can trust handling the puck and keeping it away from the goalie
    VHL Comparison: Cody Smith
    GP12 G0 A6 P6

    D Roseann Petal ??
Probably going to be the player who handles the rubber the most because of his knowledge of the game, crisp passing and rock solid defense. Despite having the stature to retrieve the puck against bigger players the lethal way, you will see lightning fast acceleration that will leave little room for the opponent to react
    VHL Comparison: Michael Gary Scott
    GP11 G4 A6 P10

    G Nils Friedriksen ??
Experience and leadership will make him a player to talk to in the dressing room, since he was recently drafted to the London United expect to see a motivated net minder who will use all the tricks in his bag. He has the size, puck control and hands to have the ability to stop the hard shots with potential to make an impact in the VHL
    VHL Comparison: A Red Guy
    GP11 W7 L3 OT1

    G Jacob Carson ??
Superb rebounding and the perfect size to play the position, he just needs a little bit more training to get in the crease more often, probably wont see him in the net unless something happens to the main man but will have plenty of time to soak in knowledge to prepare himself for S74
    VHL Comparison: Jimmy Spyro
    GP10 W4 L4 OT2

Total word count: 773, claiming this in the future
