Believe it or not, I've actually given the prompt for this season's Theme Week a lot of thought since it was first announced. The good news for the league's commissioners is that I haven't come up with very many things I would change. There are nebulous concepts, like continuing to build upon the league's Safe Space mentality and making sure that we don't have any members who are, you know, literal Nazis, because apparently that's a thing again. Really can't wrap my mind around that. But as for the HOW of building upon the Safe Space, the welcoming nature of the league, I'm not entirely sure.

All that being said, there are a few things I have come up with. First, and entirely self-serving, is finally getting Christoph Klose into the Hall of Fame. The biggest knock on Klose is that he wasn't Lord Karnage, which honestly shouldn't play a role in terms of Hall of Fame recognition, but it did. While it pains me to admit, in terms of individual accolades, Karnage was the superior player, but the idea of only the best player who does X can go into the Hall of Fame is silly. We obviously have a smaller player base than the NHL, but imagine that for the entire time that Wayne Gretzky played, no other playmaking center could be considered for the Hall of Fame because Gretzky was clearly the best. It's absurd. So as VHL Dictator for the day, I'm addressing that.

Secondly, I'd like to see more honoring and usage of league history. In Season 40, there was a Hall of Fame tournament, where all the oldsters got to show up one more time. Why are we not doing things like this regularly? Season 80 has come and gone, and a tournament involving players inducted between Season 41 and 80 could have been a lot of fun, and a nice way to honor the legacy of retired players. Hell, the top team from that tournament could face the winning team from the Season 40 tournament in a best of 7 series. We have weekly trivia questions about the league's history, but beyond that, we do very little, and I'd like to see that changed.

And honestly, that's where I kind of hit a standstill on this topic. Overall, I think league leadership does a tremendous job. Any time I've had an issue, a simple Direct Message to leadership typically leads to a swift resolution. I could use this space to decry the league's move to Discord instead of utilizing on-site Locker Rooms, and I'm sure I could come up with some argument about digital equity, but that's my State Employee training talking. There are issues, of course, but that does not come from being a commissioner; those come from being human. We're all people here, and we're all [hopefully] here because it's a fun place to be, regardless of our skin color, our nationality, our sexual or gender preferences, or anything else. Except for Nazis. Fuck those guys.

    Introduction

    Hello VHL

I recently in my podcast for theme week decreed that it would be a cool idea to implement a VHL cup. For those who don’t know a cup in soccer is usually a competition that goes between multiple different leagues, where there is usually a group stage and then a bracket style finals/playoffs system. I think it would be a cool little sim idea for either an offseason sim, or even just another sim alongside the main sims during the regular season. Yes, I hear you already “The simmers don’t have time for this, yeah I will get to that.” So before you rudely interrupt me again let me discuss my plans.

    My Idea

As there are currently 34 teams amongst the three leagues we would need to split up the league into 8 groups, 2 of these groups will be five teams and the other 6 groups will have 4 teams a piece. Each team will play each other team once in the group stage for a maximum of 4 games if you are in the two groups of five. Teams will be allocated to their groups following a random draw, there are no limits for each group there could be any random allocation of teams to each group. Once the teams have been allocated to a group they will play every other team in their group once. They will then be placed on the ladder for each group with the following rules. Teams will receive 3 points for a win, two points for an overtime win, one point for an overtime loss and no points for a loss. Once the games have been played and points awarded the top two teams from each group will make it through to the bracket stage. Please note that if there is a tie of two teams in a spot to go to the bracket stage the following order will break the tie. Head to Head record, Highest goals scored, best goal differential, Most regular wins, Highest single total goals scored, most shutouts. If further tie breaks are needed I will make them up.

The top two teams from each group will make it to the bracket stage. All the first place teams will be matched up against a second placed team The teams will be seeded depending on the same tie breaker criteria, the only rule for the bracket stage is that a team must not play the other team from their group in the opening stage of the bracket round. Each bracket round will be a best of one and no reseeding will take place once teams are in their bracket. The winner of the final match will be awarded the Beketov Cup (name is subject to change).

    Simming

So now to discuss the simming of it all. I know that the simmers are incredibly busy so I am going to make up a very rudimentary random number generator based on TPE values of all 34 teams. So stay tuned, in my vhl.com article this week I will go over the group draw for the VHCup if you are interested in it let me know and I can tag you in all my upcoming articles.

    Thanks

    1) Vincent Laroche Gagnier is having a breakout season! What’s the reason for his success?!

I'd suggest that perhaps he is on some kind of Performance Enhancing Drug. I hope he gets busted!

    2) Rumor has it, a number of Calgary Prospects will be spending another season down in the VHLE. Do you think it benefits them to spend an extra season training to make a bigger impact when they make the jump up or do you think getting up to the VHL as soon as possible is better?

I think elevation to the VHL as quickly as possible is the best way. Get them into the true VHL environment.

    3) Im going to turn the attention away from Calgary and talk about the surprises of the league. Helsinki has to be the biggest surprise! They should have been a shoe in for a wild card spot but look to have the 1st OA pick in their sight. What went wrong?

It's Helsinki. Is anyone truly surprised that they suck?

    4) Which team has surprised you most? DC’s success or LA’s failures?

I'll be perfectly honest. I haven't checked the NA standings at all this season. If LA sucks, then that's probably the pick of those two options.

    5) Favourite candy?!

Charleston Chew. I could eat that shit for dinner.

    6) What TV series is your guilty pleasure?!

I'm very late, but I've only just found "Barry" and binged the first 3 seasons this week. About to watch S4 tomorrow probably.

Hello, y’all. Hope you’re doing good. Hope you’re happy. Hope things are going good or improving in life. Hope you’re healthy! GOOD VIBES. New week, new blab. Outside of the VHL? Life is getting fun. Roll at my last employer in Canada has opened up and I have spoken to my people my partner and they’ve all said to apply. I don’t know if they would hire me back but I’m really hoping so so we will see. We’re also planning the home trip and that’s very exciting. We plan to visit potentially Thailand, Greece, Albania, south, France, Paris, Toronto before ending back home. Pretty exciting! For the VHL, all things are good. All things are great. Seattle is cruising as we zoom passed the TDL. All players are doing good. Teams feeling good. Excited to see what happens in the final stretch. Also lots of recreates because it’s that magical time of year. With all that being said, let’s blab.

Both my players are mediocre but I also think they’re playing their parts effectively on their respective teams. For Kovalchuk, what more can you do on a team that is on the outside looking in for this season and future seasons to come? For Targaryen, his build is also placed into C where wingers get that extra hit to improve elsewhere. For his position, he’s doing good. Especially for the Bulls. They’ve taken almost 800 more FO’s than the second most on the team and their FO% is light years better than the next..  Lots of recreates. That’s super exciting. I always really enjoy seeing really good members come back. I don’t think anyone’s too old to enjoy the VHL. Don’t put an edge on this Shit. Just be a member. Don’t be anything else. Enjoy hockey? Do it. Enjoy simulation hockey? Do it. Enjoy GM stuff? Do it. Good to see them back. I hope they all enjoy it and stick around to help us build to bigger and better. It can happen.  Seattle has been cruising. Vancouver is slowly nipping on our heels. Seattle in Calgary went on a really weird losing streak. They were dominant for the first part of the season. Neck and neck battling it out for first place. Then all of a sudden both teams just went on a weird, random streak. It didn’t matter what I did for lines, we just kept losing. I thought it was really weird and then I looked over at Calgary and the same thing was happening. No changes to our lines at one point. Nothing. Didn’t make sense. Random. But, that’s what Simon likes to do. He always evens the playing fields. I do think Seattle sitting for us right now in the conference and that’s exciting. Hopefully we keep up the good play and can get a favourable match up in playoffs. Although, doesn’t matter too much. The break during the wildcard is SUPER refreshing and nice.. it’s like an off-season for some.. as when playoffs end, typically right after the off-season immediately begins. Never ending, closing in on 50..
    Thank you. 🤠

Viktor Jensen has not been having an easy go of it lately.  With the Nighthawks having a tough season being one of the lower ranked squads in the Victory Hockey League, some attention has been shown to a struggling over Viktor Jensen during the clubs mediocre start to the year.

“I expected a bit better quality to be honest.  He plays an honest game and he does show flashes, but I think he’s been a bit of a disappointment.  The offense just hasn’t been there liked you hoped it would be Gotta think the Nighthawks want a little bit more from him.”
    - Anonymous VHL Executive

Jensen was sitting close in second place in rookie scoring after the first leg of the season, before falling significantly down, currently sitting 17 points back of Jasper Davis for the lead.  Jensen though doesn’t seem to be concerned:

“I know what I can bring. It hasn’t been my best campaign, but it’s my first season out of the VHLM.  Davis spent his in Geneva of the VHLE.  I will grow at my own pace.”

Wolf bois be buzzin. We were only .500 a few sims ago, and now we are sitting 30-15-1. It seems like each sim is solid and we've just been rolling lately. The fellas have been playing well and putting up good numbers. I haven't followed my VHFL Team too closely this season, but my players look pretty solid. I think all three of my forwards are on the top of the Hits Leaderboard and my two defense have been putting up points. I know Fuhr has been great lately - two shutouts in the last couple sims. So, that is good. Theme week was pretty intereting this season. Feels a little more original and not recycled. It's always nice when they give yuou motiviation to knock out a quick Media Spot, but also get a doubles week too. Hats off to those who were behind this year's theme week.  This week has been about as crazy as the last few week's at work. I'm taking a few random days off through the next few weeks, so I have that to look forward to. I guess this is where the old guy talks about how time is flying by and can't believe what day it is... But yeah, have a few plans made for the next few weekends so it won't be all work on my plate.

I should not be a Commish

Good evening y’all for this fairly late PT I am submitting.  I am here to discuss what I would do as a commish in the VHL but more importantly why I shouldn’t be a commissioner probably ever!

For those that don’t know, there was a very real chance I could have became one at point. In fact, if not for Victor not taking my interest as anything more than a joke, I may just have donned blue at one point in this league. Alas, it was likely for the best that didn’t happen.
I have been doing these sim leagues since I was around twelve years old (fun fact I’m 31 now). I have held many positions in a ridiculous amount of leagues in numerous different sports. I have been a GM, a Simmer, a Grader, a Magazine Writer and yes, even a Commissioner. And it hasn’t always been my best performance, commissioner that is.

I have commished in several leagues including most notably the MFA (Madden Football Association) where things were notoriously hectic as multiple older football leagues joined together and ultimately struggled to co-exist at time. Although, positive news is some of the remnants came through and eventually joined other leagues including the Victory Hockey League.  So I guess it’s not all bad.

With that being said if the league was ever dumb enough to give me such a role I probably wouldn’t do anything too crazy.

I would want to bring back something similar to the VHL Mag or perhaps branch out the VSN Presentation a bit. This was always one of my favourite parts of these leagues, and like the Portal can be quite an eye catcher to newer members, especially if they are being featured.   Heck we used to have people pay to be featured!

Additionally, I’d want to rebrand every teams logo in conjunction with my new reign of terror.  Everyone needs a new logo and a fresh cut with brand new jerseys and fits. I would want the Christopher Miller Era to be one of similar hockey but with cooler uniforms!

I’d also like to really incorporate some kind of money reward system similar to SHL as more of a side option for equipment to boost attributes or even to work on lesser statistics specifically, like team bonding sessions to increase leadership.

Finally, I would close the book on our statistical records and accomplishments and enter a new era with 10 season caps. 8 and 9 are not enough and I want an even 10 to be what our players can experience when they get to the pros.  We don’t get enough time with our creations and why put such a low cap on some of the greatest careers in the history of ice and pucks.
So obviously I wouldn’t be a very good Commish.  Those ideas are likely beyond trash but ultimately with the goal being to improve our league. That’s what matters…I’ve been in this league since Season 17 (I don’t count my inactive S12 12 TPE ass) and the league has drastically made incredible growth over time.

    Theme Week - Commissioner STZ

There is no part of me that actually believes I’m even slightly qualified for this position. I think the Commissioner team at all three levels do an incredible job, and the fact that they’ve brought this place to where it’s at now is pretty outstanding. So ,I think it goes without saying, most of these changes are just what I would do, and I believe they probably aren’t good for the league. But, I like free TPE and doubles week, so here is what I would do if I was made Commish.

Make a theme week to give me ideas how to do my job better
I’m kind of piggy-backing off of the idea the current Commish team had. I mean clearly when you have no clue what to do, you just open it up to the public and try and disguise it as some fun little theme week, but in reality you are just looking for ideas to better the league. I would probably abuse this and make this an ongoing theme week. Maybe once every few seasons I would do this. But also have theme week’s like “Be a good husband for a week, what would you do?” Get some good ideas from the maybe 2-3 decent humans that visit this site and are old enough to get married.

    Cut back on censorship
This one I feel strongly about, however is likely not good for the league. There were some growing pains originally, but I think the league is in a pretty good spot. It feels a little looser than where it was at when the big hard COC was first revealed. I would probably allow a lot more if I was Commish. Obviously, any kind of hate-speech is out the window, but I also think we should have freedom to speak our minds.

    Bring back Grimm Jonsson Award
I really liked the Grimm Jonsson Award for Best Leader. I am a little biased as I won it a few times, but I think now more than ever it would be great to bring this award back. With the league as big as it is, I think there are a lot more members that could be nominated after each season - it’s just a great way to recognize players who take their captaincy role seriously and bring good team spirit to the forums and discord. I think it was criticized before for being more of a popularity contest where the same people kept winning. I think if this was brought back and fine-tuned this would be a great thing for the league.

    Fold the VHLE
This goes without saying. The VHLE is useless. I think you just go back to the way the VHLM was before. Don’t cap the VHLM so much. My time with Analfist in the minors was painful as I literally didn’t update my player the entire draft year. Banking TPE during the final three years is painful, there’s nothing that demotivates a person more than earning TPE that they have to wait to apply in another season. If there are players who are concerned that they aren’t getting playing time because of players that have way more TPE - focus the VHLE energy into more Junior Showcase tournaments. Kind of like how there are different matchups in real life juniors (re: CHL vs Russia series, Don Cherry and Bobby Orr’s Top Prospect Game).

    Anyways, that’s my time.

Well, I was claiming Recruitment Team pay, and at the start of the season when there weren't any First Gens at 100 TPE, I wouldn't make any graphics. So, that looked bad. Obviously the VHL Auditor ignored the fact that when they all hit 150 TPE I had to do like 10 graphics in a week. and it was 150 TPE for a Player Card and 250 for a signature. So, near the end of the season it was quite busy.

TBH, it's a lot easier for me to just do my weekly TPE and hammer out a graphic in 10 mins for the PT. It was reccomended at the time that I continue to do the graphics and just claim it as PT and .com GFX.. But that was after I was fired so I said "lol".

Heading into London for Triller's S88 rookie season there were many unknowns.  The United's GM, Dil, had announced their retirement from not only GM'ing, but the league as a whole.  This left the team and its prospects wondering what the future would hold for the leadership group.  Rumor's swirled as to who would land the job but only one candidate had been endorsed by the former GM, Jacob Carson.  Applications were taken and after some time, the former San Diego Marlins GM was brought in to lead the London United.  Having won a Founders Cup with Jacob, Leonard was excited to be paired with a GM he had a past connection with and that excitement kept going as the new VHL GM started executing the plan for his new team.  Off-season moves brought in high level talent while maintaining London's core.  Mainstays improved over the off-season and we're better than ever.  The team had high expectations for themselves and Triller hoped to deliver in his rookie season.  Being a top candidate for the Christian Stolzschweiger award, he needed to shine and contribute to his team's success.  A debut in the playoffs in his first season would go a long way to securing his spot on the team and with a new GM in place and new teammates to play with, things were feeling great!  Before the season began, Leonard was chosen as an Assistant Captain, which was exciting news but also a heavy burden that he knew he had to earn in the LR and on the ice!

    1st Half of Season
We are officially at the halfway point in Triller's rookie season and things could be going better in London.  With an 18-13-4 record the United sit at 5th in the European Conference.  Struggling to find consistency, the team continues adjusting to the roster changes.  While mostly outplaying their opponents they seem to lack the finishing to bring these games to the win column.  As for Leonard, he is performing quite well in his rookie debut.  Sitting 3 points and 3 games back of first in points among rookies at 26, his playmaking skills have translated well to the VHL.  It is interesting to note as well that his former teammate on the Geneva Rush, Kronchy Kardashian is who he is chasing.  With 21 assists, he has been able to contribute and make an impact on the team.  GM Jacob has shown trust in the rookie by playing him mostly on the first line alongside Igor Molotov and fellow S86 Founders Cup Champion, Adam Rage.

    Second Half of Season
The second half of the season has come to a close.  London fought hard for the third spot in the conference but fell just short to Moscow by a single point, finishing with a 39-25-8 record.  A 21-12-4 record for the second half of the season.  After some creative line juggling by Jacob the team found a bit more consistency that had them in the third spot for most of the second half.  A few OT losses that couldn't be closed out were a contributing factor to the drop to 4th.  Leonard finishes the season leading all rookies in points with 47, 11 goals and 36 assists.  With a bit less output than the first half of the season, he would fall just shy of 50 points.  Triller has made large strides this season in his defensive play and it has shown with a +17 along with 106 hits.  Knowing in his rookie season that he would not be dominating the league in points, Leonard focused on defense to help his team win.  An overall, impressive, regular season rookie experience and one that Leonard Triller can be proud of.

The London United now find themselves playing for a spot in the playoffs as a Wildcard against the Riga Reign.  Despite being 7 points ahead in the standings, London has struggled this season against Riga with a 1-4 record.  With a goal, 3 assists and a +1, Leonard has found success against Riga in these mostly losing affairs.  However, he will have to stay disciplined as he has taken his most penalties against Riga with 10 PIMs.

    Wildcard VS Riga Reign
In this wildcard series, Leonard would get his first taste of playoff hockey and would use it to steady his nerves and settle in with the team.  Handily taking the series 3-1, London would show it was ready to dig into the playoffs.  Triller started slow and exited the series with only 1 goal in the 4 games but with a +3 rating, he made sure he was keeping the puck out of harm's way when on the ice.  His defensive play showed as he had 8 hits which is 1 more than in 5 games against Riga in the regular season while managing to stay out of the penalty box the whole series.  Next up, the Prague Phantoms.

Conference Semi Finals vs Prague Phantoms
After developing some playoff legs against Riga, London would face the Phantoms who, like Riga, had bested them 4-1 in the regular season.  Leonard did not see much success against Prague having only tallied 2 assists with a -1 rating.  One of only five teams he had a minus rating against throughout the season, but it became evident very quickly that Triller had changed his game for this playoff series.  In game one, Leonard would net his first career Hat-Trick, putting his passing on the backburner for a short time.  London would continue to dominate the series going forward with everyone on the team contributing to the 4-1 series defeat of the Prague Phantoms.  Leonard would continue to be a prominent player throughout the series with 7 points and a +6 rating.  Triller continues to keep his opponents on their toes as the hits keep coming with 13, resulting in only 2 PIMs.  Discipline continues to be a factor and will need to remain going into the conference finals.

Conference Finals vs HC Davos Dynamo
After a decisive win in Prague, London comes in fresh against a well worn Davos team that managed to defeat Moscow in a huge series comeback.  The Dynamo are the first team the United will face in these playoffs that did not have a winning record against them in the regular season.  With a 4-2 record, the United look to continue their dominance over the Dynamo.  Leonard however looks to up his game again having only 1 assist in those 6 games.  With a +1 rating though, he looks to maintain his defensive stature and in this series.  After a hard fought back and forth series that sees a game 7, London clinches the European Conference Championship with a decisive 5-2 win over Davos.  Leonard finishes off the series with 2 goals and 3 assists, crushing his point production of 1 assist in 6 regular season games against the Dynamo.  Triller keeps showing up for his team in the playoffs and the rest of his team is doing the same.

Continental Cup Finals vs Seattle Bears
With one thing left to accomplish, the United gear up to go for glory against the Seattle Bears who are coming off a 4-2 series win against the Calgary Wranglers.  With a 1-3 record against the Bears in the regular season, London comes into the series with the same mentality they had against Riga and Prague, the regular season record doesn't mean anything and Leonard is looking to match that sentiment.  With only 1 assist against Seattle, he looks to flex his playoff build and increase that point production while also locking down Seattle's stars.  The Continental Cup is all that remains and all the London United needs are four…more…wins.

After dropping to 3-1 in the series against Seattle, London's magical cup run seemed to be over, but you wouldn’t have known that in the locker room.  The team buzzed with excitement at the chance to fight their way back into the series, and fight they did.  Game after game, London would start to pile up the wins.  OT wins, decisive wins and outshot wins, all while fighting discipline issues.  The penalty kill was solid and even more so, Jesse Teno.  With everyone contributing at opportune times the United managed to pull off what everyone would have said was impossible, becoming the Continental Cup Champions!

Leonard Triller finishes off his Rookie Season as a Continental Cup Champion for the London United!  Contributing again in the final series with 4 assists and a +2.  Leonard found the series to be a challenging one that would test his patience as a rookie.  Racking up 18 penalty minutes, Seattle knew what buttons to push.  Unable to stay out of the box as much as he would have liked, Triller still managed to bring the physical edge he brought to other series with 12 hits.  It is a learning experience he will not soon forget.  With more experience, hopefully he learns to keep his cool down the stretch.  Triller would end the playoffs tied for 8th overall in points, as well as tied for 7th overall in goals.  He leads all rookies with 17 points, 3 more than teammate Hunor Solyom who is second and 13 more than the third place holder.  He was also 8th overall in +/- with +10.  A rookie season to remember on a team he will never forget.  Time to defend this cup!
