    S87 Vancouver Wolves Season Awards

Sadly, that time of season has come once again where we are ready to hand-out some team awards and after a very successful regular season the Vancouver Wolves fell four games to one to the Seattle Bears; a team that loaded up at the trade deadline and was always going to give teams concern. Vancouver cannot complain too much as they in similar fashion in season 86 when from Wildcard to Continental Cup Champions so since the Play-off are still on-going, we will wish Seattle Bears the best of luck repeating what we accomplished last season.

Awards are what we are really here for and this season we decided to get the team vote from some of the awards since it is always nice to hear what the team thinks and I think makes the awards a bit more special as they are coming from your peers. So let’s get the show started….

    Best defenseman:

This is one of the first awards that we sent to the team to vote; either way we would have a new winner of this award after the team traded away Biggie Cheese @a_Ferk to Warsaw Predators due to salary cap reason putting more pressure the newly former defensive core with Pierre Emile Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito and Jimmy MacElroy @Xflexz being asked to take a much bigger role on the back-end while it would be trial by fire for Rookie Jens Lekman @Bobcat. Tater Tottingham @Trunkxolotl brought much required depth to back-end at the trade deadline and has since resigned with the team through season 89 giving the team a solid core heading into the near future. Tater should have more of say in this award next season.

The best defenseman as voted by the team is:

    Rookie of the Year:

This season Vancouver Wolves had three Rookies making their VHL debuts, all three in very different roles and different positions making this a very interesting award to watch this season. Warr Kerr @VattghernCZ, highly thought of forward selected 9th overall in S86 draft, expected to play a large depth role with the team this past season. Jens Lekman @Bobcat, another S86 draft prospect was looked upon to secure the back-end beside second year defender Jimmy MacElroy @Xflexz and play in some key match-up throughout the season. Lastly, Jeremy Swayman @Agito came in as the back-up and possible future option in between the pipes for Vancouver Wolves moving forward; things haven`t turned out as planned when Swayman announced his retirement about half-way through the season.

The Rookie of the Year as voted by the team is:

    Unsung Hero:

Easily the hardest award to give out every season as it really comes down to who is playing a large role for the team but maybe might not really get the credit that they deserve. That made it easier to send the vote to the team and they also proved that this is a very hard award to pin point one player deserving of the award with six different players actually receiving votes for this award. So, before I actually announce the award I actually want to point out all six of these players for playing large role to even be consider for this award by their teams mates. Receiving Votes for this award were: Nezuko @Baozi, Brandt Fuhr @Tate, Jens Lekman @Bobcat, Henry Eagles @Greg_Di, Svatopluk Puk @Otaznik and Sergey Preobrazhensky @Bulduray_1.

Finally, the Unsung Hero Award is awarded to:

    Most Energetic:

Usually another very hard award to select and once again another award that I sent to the team this season to have the ultimate say. This award is usually is award for activity, character and activity around the team. Once again the team showed how hard this award can be to award as well since four different players received votes; Wann Kerr @VattghernCZ, Jens Lekman @Bobcat, Tater Tottingham @Trunkxolotland Dogwood Maple @dogwoodmaple.

This season Most Energetic award goes to:

    Most Valuable player:

    Last year’s winner was traded away to Warsaw Predators means we would have a new MVP and somehow this actually surprised me as I thought this season award winner had also won the award the last season; (in what was I think moment) but also shows how tough this award can be; at times to award. This is the last team voted award and only two players received votes this season as I think it was very clear from the very start of the season who would be our MVP this season so without much more waffling;

    The Vancouver Wolves MVP is:

    Little Wolf Award (Most Hits):

Now with all the team voted awards handed out we are straight into the stat awards and we start off with the player that lead the team in hits this past season; also just realized I actually haven`t even looked at these stats so it will also surprise me as much as everyone else so let me find my computer and find that stat sheets.

The winner of the Little Wolf Award (Most Hits) is:

    Sniper Award (Shooting percentage):

Every year this award seems to surprise me as usually this is a player that tends to produce a lot of goals compared to the number of shots directed at the net and maybe should be renamed Why don`t you shoot more Award since it also tends to be player that doesn`t lead the team in shots.

The winner of the Sniper Award is:

    QB Award (PP Assists):

Another award that where I haven`t checked the stats but I am going to guess that they team leaders in assist are going to high on this list so Pierre Emile Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito or defending QB Award winner Sergey Preobrazhensky @Bulduray_1 will win this award.

The Winner of the QB Award is:

    Tooth Fairy (PIM Award):

One of my favorite awards as it shows a player that is willing to throw their weight around to help the team in many different ways and last season, we had a tie for this award as Biggie Cheese @a_Ferk and Jimmy MacElroy @Xflexz took home the honors so who will be this season; any guess?

This season winner of the Tooth Fairy Award is none other than:

    Always responsible (Plus/Minus):

This award is actually very easy to hand out this season as the team leader also leads the league in this stat so without wasting much time; the Always responsible Award goes to:

    Oops Sorry Eh!! (Least hits)

Last season winner no longer with the team this season means we have a new winner and Lady Leduc has sadly been traded away as well so this will be anyone award to win other then Nezuko @Baozi as they already won the Little Wolf Award (Most hits) so since I haven`t looked yet; lets have a look see together:

Oops Sorry Eh!! Award this season goes to:

    It wasn`t me(Least PM):

Well, we know Pierre Emile Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito isn`t winning this award but who other than Henry Eagles @Greg_Di has a chance at this award since if I remember correctly he has won it two straight season since joining the Wolves. Well, Since I already looked, I can tell you it wasn`t him this time as he finished second.

So, the winner of It wasn`t me Award is:

Shoot the lights out (Most shots):

Goals usually come from the player that shoots the most and when I looked at the actually stats this become even more apparent as in direct order of goals scored on the team this season also follows who shot the puck the most this season so now that I gave away the winner if everyone has been follow all the award handed out so far so without wasting everyone time let’s call back to the stage:

    Work Horse Award (AMG):

The Work Horse Award is given to the player that plays the most minutes and has the biggest potential impact on the game than any other player and we would have all consider Pierre Emile Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito in the running until you seen his 172PIM so that then leave the question who actually won this award?

The Work Horse Award goes to:

    Common Coach (Least played):

This one as mentioned last season usually is a player down the depth chart or rookie joining the Wolves in their first season. Which wasn`t the case last season when Svatopluk Puk @Otaznik won the award so instead of me guessing and say anything else that won`t be correct and since I already have the answer; let award this award.

Common Coach Award is awarded to:

Bruised and Battered Award (SB Award):

Don`t think anyone will be surprised by the winner of this award since once again he is amongst the leaders of the league in the category but I will also like to mention the team overall blocked more shots this season up from 715 to 848 shots-blocked; meaning the team made it easier for Brandt Fuhr and Jeremy Swayman; right?

The Bruised and battered Award goes to:

    Three Star Award:

You would think I would learn to have this ready before I start these huge award shows but nope once again, I haven`t done any of the research so give a few minutes as at least I found an easier way to find the data now and I will be right back to hand out this award. Any guess as to whom will win this award? I am lean Brandt Fuhr or Nezuko but I could be wrong.

    Three Star Award goes to:

    Top Prospect Award:

Not sure how to actually award this award this season since we started the season with two prospects in Reese McFleury and Oreo McFleury but Vancouver Wolves management traded away one of the prospects just before the trade deadline to make room for an more experienced player and doing right by Reese by trading him to a team that he should make next season. So really this is a one-horse race now so lets look at both prospects seasons and give me time to consider if I should award this to a player possible traded to another team; I have done it in the past with Nico Pearce.

    Oreo McFleury
    @JB123
    72GP   37G – 41A – 78pts    15+/-     520SHT    55PIM     152Hits        19SB

Oreo McFleury is currently playing with Oslo Storm in the VHLE and was forth on the team in scoring this season with 78pts, third is goals and fifth in assists. Helped the team finish second in the VHLE standings during the regular season and has helped the team into the VHLE League finals against Cologne Express; who topped the VHLE this season. Currently leads Oslo in play-off goals (5) and points (9) in eight games.

    Reese McFleury @Spaz
    72GP   25G – 51A – 76pts    0+/-     265SHT    50PIM     109Hits        190SB
Reese McFleury was playing with Istanbul Red Wolves in the VHLE and was 2nd on the team in scoring as defender with 76pts, 3rd in goals (25), 1st in assists (51). Istanbul finished sixth in the league missing the play-offs by two points to Vasteras Iron Eagles.

Based on the season in the VHLE there isn`t much really to choose between the two brothers other than teams they played for and position so in the end the choice is rather easy one:

Vancouver Wolves Top Prospect Award is given to:

    Final Thoughts:
It was a great season from start to finish but in the end, we came across a much-improved Seattle Bears team in the play-offs. It shows how close the league is at the moment when the fifth seeded team can beat the first seeded team but remember last season, we had the luck on our side when we were a Wildcard team and then went onto win the Continental Cup. We regroup and we make another run as we still have a very good core set for next season and beyond. Also remember we won the Victory Cup so we have two cups in back-to-back seasons; not an easy feat…

Let’s like our wounds and come back ready to fight again next season.

Baozi reacted to VattghernCZ in Wolves vs. Bears series preview
The pack from Vancouver has clawed their way to the top early and managed to hold onto it throughout the season without chipping a fang, finishing with Victory Cup winning record. While Vancouver players were licking their wounds, Seattle's pawth to the postseason lead through the Chicago territory. They showed their thick fur and wrestled Chicago into submission in 5 games.
I'll stop with the puns, I promise. It's becoming unbearable.
Seattle made some major trade deadline acquisitions, and with a strong finish to the season it will be interesting to see how will they compare with championship caliber Vancouver roster. Let's briefly compare these teams in different areas of the game.
    Goaltending
While Dusty Wilson has been very reliable tending the Bears' goal for the last 4 seasons, Brandt Fuhr on the opposite side is one of the elite goaltenders in the league. Their career save percentage might be close, but this season Fuhr has clearly been playing better with .931 SV% compared do Wilson's still great .921 SV%. But the biggest difference between them is in the postseason, where unlike Fuhr, Wilson doesn't have a great track record of providing game-breaking performance. Despide being hot in the recent wild card games. My money is on Fuhr to be the better netminder in this series.
    Defense
Despite only having 3 defensemen on their roster, the Bears are the team with fewest shots against (2408, 33.4 per game). Well, they had 4 defensemen for a bit before switching Tavish DeGroot to play forward. The fact they have also logged the fewest blocked shots of any team (671, 9.3 per game) on top of that is a clear indication their defence is based on puck possession and not allowing the opposition to get to shooting position. Ryuji Sakamoto, Alessandro Nano and rookie Elias Lampi are all defenders who pride themselves in their puck moving ability. Sakamoto is one of the best skaters in the league lethal in transition, and Nano has fantastic vision and decision making making him a proficient powerplay quarterback.
Vancouver doesn't look too shabby defensively either. They're a top-5 team in shots against (2496, 34.7 per game) with middle of the pack shots blocked (744, 10.3 per game). They're allowing the opponents to get more looks on the net, but the difference is small enough for thwir slightly superior goaltending to neutralize. The clear cut no.1 player on the Wolves' blue line is their captain Pierre Emile Bouchard, the author of last season's Continental Cup winning goal and arguably the best all-round blueliner of this series. He shares the ice with Tater Tottingham, a young offensively talented defender whom the Wolves acquired before the deadline to round out their defensive core. Their second pairing consists of Jimmy MacElroy and rookie Jens Lekman, two shutdown defenders who bring quite some physicality.
    Offense
The Wolves are one of the more actively ahooting teams in the league, testing the opposing goalies' attention 2929 times (40.7 shots per game). What's remarkable is their ability to get to more dangerous areas, leading to them being the highest scoring team with 250 goals (3.47 per game) despite being outside the top 3 in shot volume. That's impressive efficiency. The leading goals and points scorer is Nezuko, an undersized winger who's been signed in free agency to try to replace Alexandre Leduc's production - succesfully I'd say. Centering their first line is Dogwood Maple, a dynamic up-and-coming forward with high-end offensive IQ. On his wings are Svatopluk Puk, a fantastic playmaker from Slovakia, and Henry Eagles, another youngster with great size and big shot. Second line of Nezuko and rookie undersized two-way forward Wann Kerr, who started his VHL career with 20-goal season, is centered by veteran Swiss Army Knife forward Sergey Preobrazhensky, an experienced leader who I believe can be a difference maker in the postseason. Many of the Wolves' players have set new career highs this season, and every forward apart from Wann Kerr scored over a point per game.
The Bears' offensive stats are a bit misleading. They were not great offensively to start off the season, but thanks to their additions before the trade deadline, they are arguably the most improved team. Overall, they've generated below-average 2330 shots on goal (32.4 per game) and scored below-average 179 goals (2.49 per game), actually making their goal differential negative (-28) - given how great their defensive game has been, it only accentuate how much they struggled offensively early on. Leading the team in goals and points is Vasile Lamb, a high scoring power forward acquired from DC Dragons. The top scoring forward who spent the whole season with the Bears is brother Hulk Hogan 2, a tough SOB centering the first line, who's steadily been one of the elite well rounded players for what seems to be forever. On his wings are Yaroslav Bogatyrev, a towering 2nd-year player with strong fundamentals and superstar potential who's been struggling to find his game so far, and Tavish DeGroot, a star two-way defenseman acquired from Riga who's been tasked to switch position and provide some spark to the anemic Seattle offense. Playing with Vasile Lamb on thr second line are one of the top S87 rookies Randy Bobandy, and Chip Stone, a creative dangler that's fun to watch. Rookie passer Left Alone takes Stone's spot during Lamb's line sevond rotations. While 5 Wolves' corwards scored over 72 points, only 2 Bears' forwards managed to reach the point-per-game plateau - Vasile Lamb and Tavish DeGroot, both players who started the season on other teams.
    Special teams
Combined, the Wolves are a bit better team in man advantage situation. Their powerplay is league leading at 20.76% conversion rate, but their penalty kill is below average at 80.28% success.
For Seattle, special teams are nothing to write home about. Both their powerplay (17.42%) and penalty kill (81.16%) are slightly below league average. The powerplay results are probably not surprising to anyone, but considering how stout their defense is, the lack of penalty kill success is unexpected.
    Final thoughts
My player is in Vancouver, so I might be biased, but I can't see the a little bit stingier Seattle defense overcoming the massive advantage in firepower Vancouver has. I think it will be a bit closer than the standings would suggest, maybe taking 6 games, but I believe the Wolves will show why they're the favorites entering the series.

    Final Count down

The season end is just around the corner with five games remaining in the regular season so today we are going to look at the play-off picture and maybe a few other things but who knows at this point. Either way we are back with another press conference, so answer three questions for one TPE or all six for two TPE. As always have fun!!

    1. Vancouver Wolves are officially Victory Cup champions with five games remaining in the season, did winning the Victory Cup surprise you? Why or Why not?

    2. At this time, it looks like Seattle Bears and the Chicago Phoenix are going to play in the North American Conference wildcard with the winner playing (us) Vancouver in the first round. Who would you like to meet in the first round? Why?

    3. Calgary Wranglers and the LA Stars will play the other series. Who do you think wins the series? Why?

    4. European Conference is a mess with five of the eight teams fighting for the play-offs & Wildcard spots. Who do you think makes the play-offs between Malmo, London, Warsaw, Prague and Riga?

    5. Talking about the European Conference Play-off race; (We) Vancouver Wolves actually has complete control of one of the teams fate; Warsaw Predators as we play them three times in five remaining games. How do you think we are going to play them considering we have nothing to play for other than getting ready for the play-offs? Are we going to wreck them and destroy their play-off hopes or are we going easy and doing them a favor?

    6. This week lets try a fill in the blank:

Vancouver Wolves will repeat as Continental Cup Champions if __________________________.

Want to finish by saying Great season Vancouver Wolves with a ton of personal best. Play-off are going to be tough but I Believe we can repeat so lets rest up and give them hell!!

VHL Trade Wars: Review of the League’s Transaction Timeline (S60-Present)

Welcome to the first edition of what I am coining VHL Trade Wars, which will be a detailed overview of every trade that has happened from Season 60 to Present in the Victory Hockey League.  I saw this as a great opportunity to relearn some of this league’s history since I haven’t been as present in it over the last thirty seasons or so.  Seeing as I am starting fresh in trying to secure my footing back in this great league, I wanted to give myself a lot of content to build off of so I do really hope you enjoy this.

I chose this timeline since the Portal will allow me to be able to comprehensively review every piece that would have been moved from Season 60 to Present, and one thing I will definitely be doing is declaring either a winner for the trade or for those that are more of an even-playing-field, a draw.  This means I will be looking at picks involved and what they became, even if the pick ended up in someone else’s drafting hands.

Feel free to respond with any opinions or critiques of the article(s) as obviously some of you may be more familiar with the stakes of some of these transactions.  With that being said, lets get to the first trades.

    SEASON 60
    To DAV
    - Adam Warlock @OrbitingDeath

    To QUE
    - Elias Sobeck @Boragina
    - S61 DAV 3rd Round Pick (Ryan Skinner) @rampagemaster

    GMs: @Tyler (Davos) – @Beaviss (Quebec)

    Date: May 11th, 2018

Davos made this move to acquire signature dominant agent OrbitingDeath and bring him into the fold that was the Dynamo as they were in desperate need of a defenseman.  This was relatively early on in the career of Warlock as Season 59 was just his rookie season.  Warlock ended up having a solid, though unheralded career, recording 348 points in 504 games while playing a very physical game on the backend.  While some saw Warlock as a two-way player it was really the tough nature and the large frame that allowed him to exceed in becoming a key piece on an organization.  Warlock would make the switch to the wing for his final couple seasons with the Legion which ended up being a great move on his part as not only did he contribute for the team as an offensive power forward, but he helped guide them to back-to-back Continental Cups to end his career with an impressive 21 points over 24 games while dishing out a ridiculous 104 hits over that stretch.  Despite an incredibly decorated VHLM Career that saw him win five individual trophies and a Founder’s Cup in just one season, the bulk of Warlock’s VHL Career was more team based as he became far more of an accessory piece rather than a key cog.  With that being said, in regards to Davos, he would spend three seasons on the Dynamo recording a very respectable 126 points in 216 games while tallying up 391 hits and 304 blocked shots along the way.

Elias Sobeck was a VHL player for six seasons and even reached a point-per-game with the New York Americans back in Season 62.  With that being said, he was predominantly a player that the bad teams would acquire to fill out their roster.  While that likely wasn’t the goal when Quebec went out and acquired him, he recorded 81 points over 144 games with Quebec before ties were severed between the player and the organization.  Sobeck would finish his career with a respectable 254 points in 432 games but was unable to capture the kind of consistent play needed to be a complimentary on even a good team so unfortunately he did not pan out as expected when he was drafting sixth overall by Davos in Season 58.  In fact, and this is the true fun nature of this trade…Sobeck was taken one pick higher than Adam Warlock in that draft.

Ryan Skinner was drafted with the Third Round Selection that was involved in this deal, but never did make it to the VHL.  He played 144 games in the VHLM, spending a season each with both Yukon and Ottawa, where he actually did find some individual success with 119 points and 159 hits in those games.  With that being said, with no VHL impact he isn’t really a super relevant piece to this deal.

Verdict: Winner – Tyler (Davos): Ultimately, I feel like it has to be.  My favourite part about this trade is Davos made the poor pick of Sobeck over Warlock but then ultimately redeemed themselves by pulling this deal off in the end.  Unfortunately for Beaviss, Sobeck never lived up to the expected hype, and while Warlock didn’t live up to the prestigious pedigree his agency has in the Victory Hockey League, he played an important part of three Continental Cups and found success at multiple positions.  One thing that is important to note and ultimately while it is not part of my evaluation, it should be in the court of public opinion, but it has been made clear that Warlock was going to go somewhere else in Free Agency as he wanted to win a Continental Cup with each team.  In some ways, you could argue that Quebec’s hands were forced in not wanting to lose him for nothing.  It’s unfortunate though that they were not able to get anything truly tangible in return.

This trade was an interesting one as it had been preplanned for quite some time as it was where the Tfong agency that represented Fook Yu had their sights on the entire time.  He had made it clear to GM Beaviss of his interest in going to New York, and it’s great to see the team make that move to accommodate the player while still getting a decent asset back.  It is important to note that the pick in question here was used in a separate deal but has already indicated we will be looking at specifically this trade and not how it was used in a subsequent move, since we will be judging that at a later date.

STZ made this move to bring in a veteran high-end forward who was looking to find some team success over his remaining couple seasons in the league.  Yu played on Quebec in his first few seasons before finding himself on Seattle, Toronto and then back on Quebec.  This is where he would ultimately be moved to the New York Americans as Quebec was in the midst of a rebuild and were moving some of their best veterans to acquire draft compensation and younger talent.  The Americans would ultimately move a 2nd round pick in Season 61 for the talented and rather large forward.  Yu would spend one season on New York, recording over a point-per-game and contributing a massive hit total while being fairly disciplined overall.  He would ultimately not achieve his goal of winning a Continental Cup as the Americans sadly fell short despite a brilliant Victory Cup season as they were upset in the Conference Finals.

While the pick in question would later be moved to the Riga Reign, I do want to look at this as face value here.  Quebec City would use this pick in a later move but ultimately I don’t think the value of this pick was really worth Fook Yu over his last two seasons.   Jesper Stromberg, who was selected with the second round pick, played 72 career games in the VHL and although he did win a Continental Cup in his only season, he was ultimately a depth defenseman on a juggernaut.  He holds very little weight compared to even a season of what Fook Yu brought to the table, but ultimately as said, there are other factors to keep in mind.

Verdict: Winner – STZ (New York) - I feel bad for Beaviss cause this isn’t really an entirely fair look at this deal.  There are more aspects to this trade that will be seen going forward (and now this makes me want to do some trade trees at some point) but looking at this on face value, the pick that was acquired ended up being a one-season depth defender in the VHL, while Fook Yu had two seasons of a Hall of Fame calibre career left to play.  Albeit, there is a lot to say about New York not accomplishing their goals when it comes to making this move.  They didn’t even make the finals after acquiring Yu and while he definitely played a big role in their season, his eight points in thirteen playoff games, was less than spectacular.  However, considering they gave up no first round picks or talented prospects and ultimately left this deal moving what became a late second round pick, it’s an easy one to swallow even without a Continental Cup.  On the Quebec side, they were looking to get younger and Yu had expressed interest in playing for New York, so there was less leverage on the side of Quebec, but ultimately New York did receive the better value in this transaction.

Edition #9: New Year, New Season, New Campbell's Corner (Again)!

It feels like it’s been forever since I’ve actually sat down to take the time to write a proper media spot. Last week was the first significant writing I’ve done in the league since August of 2022 and while the break has felt like a nice vacation after years and years of activity, you can definitely feel a bit of the rust that has accumulated over the last half a year. As a lot of people already know from private talking, locker rooms or this article , I will be moving to Australia for about 10-12 months and our flight officially leaves on February 26th. I think, despite having a plan and a good bit of money hidden away, it’s still going to be quite the challenge and setting myself up for success in other areas before I go so they either don’t add to the stress or I can continue to use them for enjoyment is incredibly important. As I’ve found over my time with the Victory Hockey League, it’s almost easier to write week in and week out if you have some form of a template. Basically I’m saying league blabber for 500+ words and you’re good to go! If you’re constantly being creative every single week, the task becomes a bit daunting and sometimes can weigh on your shoulders as a job instead of a task. Fortunately for us, the league is always simulating, pumping out stats or has something go on and therefore we’re always blessed with content to blab about.

I’m excited to be back in the writing action and this week I’m going to be having a little bit of fun. In my latest Bana Blab's #57, I did a small amount of hunting through the Bears records and all-time current player stats and found a few who were dialing in on some milestones. This week we’re all going to hop into our trusty VHL hot air balloon created by  @iRockstar and go around the leagues to see what’s going on. With that being said, tie your shoes and take your vitamins because we’re turning the heat on and hopping in the balloon! Weeeeeooooo

TEAMS: The Wolves are back and they’re seemingly very hungry with a 14-2-1 record. LA and CGY are right behind them with 24 points each. Calgary isn’t a huge surprise for me. They have a lot of good pieces on that team and they’re led by a good GM. Both could be said for LA too in some sense, but also not with quite the same confidence. LA has good pieces and a great goalie, but they have holes in their defense. A literal log jam from 5th to 13th in the league, as all those teams are within 4 points. It was actually crazy but a lot of fun to see that. Tight competition between all these teams will make it a more fun situation while it lasts. Helsinki and Toronto are trying to out tank one another. Who wins? My bet is on Toronto! It’s awesome to see how Daniel Janser ( @Daniel Janser) has turned out in the VHL. Ever since they were a prospect entering the league, I had very good vibes when it came to this member and player. Taking a look at their career and this season - you’d be right. They lead the league with 27 points and are having a very dominant, MVP like season. Nezuko ( @Baozi) leads a tight race for the Kevin Brooks trophy https://vhlportal.com/hof/awards/history/9 with 13 goals to date. My very own player, Mikhail Kovalchuk with London, currently has 20 apples on the year to lead the VHL in assists. Biggie Cheese ( @a_Ferk) out here being a double predator as he’s the top Dman for points. Larry Abass Jr ( @RileyL) is the crown holder at the moment for rookie players with the most points. Jani Karppinen ( @ShawnGlade) is lethal at the most with a shooting average of 18.18%. It does help if you’ve only shot the puck 22 times in 17 games played. Callum Murray ( @Berocka) is playing, on average, 1.74 more minutes per game than the second highest average of 31.21. Both are LA Stars players. Brandt Fuhr ( @Tate) is one of those hungry wolves and leads the league for wins with 14 and a very solid 1.81 GAA. They also three-way share the shutout lead with Art Vandelay ( @Gustav) and Oskar Lindbergh ( @Doomsday) with 3. Henry Tucker Jr ( @NSG) has faced the most penalty shot attempts with 18 against them.

TEAMS: Over in everyone’s favorite league within our VHL world, the VHLE. One thing I will admit about the E is that maybe it’s not as turbulent when it comes to the difference from all teams, but then again, I think I’m also wrong because there’s less teams. Cologne leads the way in the VHLE with a 15-4-0 record. The next three in Oslo, Vasteras and Geneva are all within a 3 point, close battle. You love to see it! The next 3 are where things really start to fall off with Stockholm, Istanbul and Bratislava and then to terribly cap things off, we have last places Rome Gladiators with a 1-17-0 record.  Adeline Delle Donne ( @Dtayl ) leads the way for goals (19)  and points (37) and is a huge part to why Vasteras is in the mix. Sebastien Dokis ( @Sebastien) and Curtis Crumb ( @Crummer77) co-own the lead with 26 apples. Crumb also is the number one d-man when it comes to points so far this season. Womp Womp Womp Womp Womp Jr ( @AdamEss) is making me a huge fan because of their physical play out on the ice. 42 MORE hits than 2nd place (102 VS 60). Would it surprise you if we told you they also led the league with 64 penalty minutes?  Justin Lion ( @Emperor_Fun) leads the E for W’s with a 13-3-0 record. They also have the most shutouts with 3 so far! Jean Mercier ( @Is_thatok) is a work horse as they’ve ironed out playing 1081 minutes. Has their coach ever let them take a break yet?? Istanbul’s CPU goalie is currently the “Bana Bad Pick” of the week for the VHLE with a record of 7-11-0 and a SV% of .859, GAA of 4.22

TEAMS: It’s been a long time since I’ve paid attention to the VHM or anything like that. Of course I keep my eyes on players and their developments, but I’m not regularly looking at the index or their portal portions and seeing how the teams and players are doing overall. This season, it seems like the same old same old. Hot, hot, hot on top. Cold, cold, fucking ice cold on the bottom. Mexico City Kings are running away with things, having been undefeated in 16 games and outsourcing the second most team by 22 goals. Their goal differential is also 26 higher than the next team which sits at 16. After them, it’s a sharp drop off to San Diego and Houston for the next highest spots. Flip on over and the three top are a bit closer than the other conference. All within 6 points from 20-26. Saskatoon and Philadelphia combined for a total of 4 wins. Two teams with the lowest win totals combined together don’t even equal the next teams (Halifax with 5 –5-8-3) Captain Nugget ( @Captain nugget) leads the VHLM for points with 40, assists with 25 and co-shares the lead from goals with fellow teammate Grizz Tazzo ( @xslapxshotsx) with 15. Keita Kourou ( @woog) is firing anything they can on net as they lead the M with 128 shots and are having a career season so far for themselves in the M. Colton Heffelfinger ( @heffcolton) is having a very strong sophomore season in the M as he leads all D-men with 27 points. Mark Callaway ( @Beketov) is, at the moment, showing the M why Beketov players can be magic as he’s iced the cake in 7 games so far and leads for GWG. A dear old friend, @Zetterbergand his players Ross Glagau, lead the M for all goalies in the M with 16 DUBZ. Matthew ( @Jack kidd) McCagg leads for both SV% (.921) and GAA (1.99). Their numbers are just as strong as last season for their win-loss record and they’ve strongly improved their other stats too! Lastly, while things have been rough this season in Saskatoon, they have a lot to be happy for too. Stefan Norris ( @Elman Diablo) has been working their ass off! They currently lead the M for goalies with 580 shots against and have even had a bit of a naughty streak while leading for penalty minutes amongst goalies with 6. Congrats on recently hitting 200 TPE! Keep up the work and have fun.

I will say, way back to when I first joined nearly 4 years ago, nobody ever told me how to do point tasks. I was moreorless just a welfare player and the GMs I had just kind of accepted that that was how it would always be. Eventually I found out how to actually do point tasks and here I am now. While it is true that some GMs fall short on educating new and returning members alike in regards to claiming, it isn't super difficult to figure out how to do them. The forum is laid out somewhat decently enough to find where they are and there's guides pinned on all of them.

Sitting at the top of the standings with 7-0-1 record, the Wolves are not messing around. GM @Frank's offseason activity already looks like savvy moves and certainly is paying off.

Leading the team in goals (6) and points (14) is Nezuko @Baozi, an offseason free agent addition who was brought to try to replace Alexandre Leduc's @Lemorse7 production. Sergey Preobrazhensky @Bulduray_1, acquired last season from Moscow, and Svatopluk Puk @Otaznik, a 3rd-season Wolves forward, are tied for 2nd with 11 points. Dogwood Maple @dogwoodmaple (10 points) and Henry Eagles @Greg_Di (7 points) are both on track to set new career high in points. Rookie Wann Kerr is off to a solid, though not spectacular start, scoring a goal in his debut game and currently sitting on 2 goals and 4 points

On blue line, the loss of Biggie Cheese @a_Ferk was always going to be huge. But Pierre Emile Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito, the team's newly appointed captain, is having a special season with 10 points already, pushing the game forward like Biggie Cheese used to. Jimmy MacElroy @Xflexz is building on the confidence their rookie season gave them with a fantastic start. Jens Lekman @Bobcat, a rookie defender, already has a 2-goal game under their belt. Jens has been a prolific triggerman on every level so far, and it looks like the trend continues.

In the net, oh boy, what a season Brandt Fuhr @Tate is having. Save percentage north of .94 and sub 1.75 goals against average are inhuman numbers. The Wolves certainly need their goaltending to be atrong after losing Biggie Cheese, and so far Fuhr has more than delivered. We're yet to see rookie goaltender Jeremy Swayman @Agito starting a game. Even rhough everyone would like to see their newest face in the net, it's hard to justify sitting Fuhr right now.

Nikolas Kauppi, unable to find his own team's press conference, brazenly enters the Vancouver Wolves press conference in a dashing purple-and-black suit proudly representing Prague. The room of reporters starts buzzing with confusion when hushes are spread when Kauppi approaches the podium. He opens a bottle of water and takes a few gulps before clearing his throat, "All right, what unrelated questions do we have for me today?"

    1. How close do you follow the Vancouver Wolves off season?
Who? Ahh..just kidding! First of all, my most sincere congratulations to your Continental Cup win last season. You'll be lucky to get it again this season. Oh, sorry...uh..yeah, no, I don't follow you guys at all except that last bit.

    2. Day of trades and too many forgotten; Can you recall all the different trades that General Manager @Frank made this off season trying to improve the roster? Hint: There was a total of ten trades.
I gotta be honest -- as a player, I only pay any attention to anything that's on the ice. I'm sure..uh..Frank was it? Hey, there he is! Frank! Good shit last season, dude. You did what had to be done. Order 66 and all that. It's all business, no hard feelings I'm sure.

    3. Alex Leduc @Lemorse7 was trade to the New York Americans in a difficult trade that seen Hasbulla Magomedov @Motzaburger, S87 NYA 1st and S89 NYA 2nd along with S88 1st and S88 CHI 3rd. Was this a big enough of a return for a player of his caliber? Why?
Wow, he got to go to New York, huh? Lucky guy. I hope he hates sleep. Magomedov isn't even on the Wolves anymore, so I think you lost a pretty valuable player there for picks. What do I know though...I just play the sport, not with money.

    4. Shortly after trading away Alex Leduc @Lemorse7 the team quickly replaced him with a free agent signing in (S81) Nezuko @Baozi. Does this mean that (S81) Nezuko will always be compared to Alex Leduc @Lemorse7 in the terms of leadership and production? Why or Why not?
You signed an anime character? That's hilarious!

    5. Oh, we also have a back-up goaltender that should push Brant Fuhr @Tate to be even better this season in Jeremy Swayman @Agito. Do you think we will have a goaltending controversy this season?
SWAAAAYY! Love that guy. He's practically a brick wall. Fuhr better check his posts before Swayman takes his spot with the Michigan.

    6. Material, Material so much!! I guess I have to decide that last question and push the rest to next week so last question is: After all the changes this off season, how would you rate the Vancouver Wolves chances of repeating on a scale of 1-10? Why?
    2. It was originally 1 because you signed an anime character in place of Leduc, but I bumped it up to 2 because you got my boy Swayman in the mix so there's a slight chance.

Hey, Vancouver, it's been a blast in my short time here. You have a lovely city and I can't wait to make sure you don't make the playoffs this next season, but good luck! See you on the ice!

Gold and respect. That's what you fight for in the World Cup of Hockey.

No better way to start this article than by stating the magnitude of the moments the players selected for the World Cup will face in the upcoming days.

This World Cup is slated to begin on Wednesday, the 18th of January, and run until the two last-standing teams face each other in one Final game on Sunday, the 22nd.

The last World Cup of Hockey, played at the end of S84, was won by Team Eastern Europe after a stellar team performance in which they fought back against the skilled Canadians who lit up the scoreboards during the whole tournament.

This isn't a flawed tournament, but it also isn't fair... and it shouldn't be. Some nations have better odds of winning, which comes along with how much hockey is engraved in the nation's culture. That's something we can look at historically. That Eastern European team has only three gold medals to their name, while the Canadians they beat have 10. That's a record 10 gold medals for the Canadians, who have as many as the Nordics.

Everyone is aware of these differences, but those are also what makes this tournament beautiful. It's the unlikelihood of something happening which makes us, as a fan, root for the underdogs. The commissioners acknowledge this but still work on bringing balance to the equation, even if that's arduous.

Another thing that makes this tournament different is the way these commissioners go on about choosing who will lead the nations to battle. When the usual is opening positions for candidates to apply, for this tournament, our commissioners invite different GMs around the league based on pre-determined criteria.

@UnknownMinion and @JB123 shared some insight into what leads them to invite certain people for these GM positions. While they look for new and upcoming talent in the GMing world, it is also beneficial if they have secured some success during their past endeavors. It could be someone who has done a great job in other tournaments, such as the World Juniors or the Junior Showcase Tournament. But also a more experienced GM with exceptional conduct and a presence that allows people around them to grow.

For the upcoming tournament, the invitees were the following. Zef Goncalves led the Cologne Express to a record-breaking regular season in the VHLE and now accepted the opportunity to lead the Western Europe team in this World Cup. Jacob Carson, the most recent Founder's Cup champion, will lead Team USA. AJ Williams, GM of the über-offensive Houston Bulls, is in charge of Team World. And from the VHL, we have three leaders. The Helsinki Titans' AGM, Mickey Dickson, will lead the Eastern Europeans. Last but not least, we have two of the latest GMs chosen to lead VHL Franchises. From the London United, leading Team Canada, Dylan Wallace, and from the Toronto Legion, to lead Team Nordic, Nils Godlander.
    (@leandrofg, @jacobcarson877, @AJW, @samx, @Dil, @Moon)

Let's get to it! Who are these GMs taking to Denmark? Will the increased probabilities result in favoritism for any of these teams? Teams Canada, USA, Nordic, and Eastern Europe have each won the gold medal home in the last four tournaments. Could we see team World or Western Europe take that medal this season? Team Western Europe hasn't won gold since Season 43.

Let's rate these teams! How will we do it? First, for the goaltenders, we will assess the quality of their projected starters and evaluate them from 0 to 5 points, the latter being the best score. We will rate both defensemen and forwards of the teams with the same system but with a twist. We'll evaluate the depth of the positions by averaging the quality of all the members and for the top players, i.e., 4 Forwards and 3 Defensemen. We'll then add the scores for the final ranking.

It's not by chance that the Canadian team is one of the most medaled in the history of this tournament. The medal count stands at 25, only behind the United States of America... and when you look at the roster Dylan Wallace brought, you can see why. Offensively, it's hard to point out something wrong with the Canadians. They'll have at their disposal some of the best players around the VHL last season. Brendan Marner and Baby Bob were both Top 3 in scoring, but the latter also led the league in goals. On defense, Calgary's AirRig GoodBrandSun will lead the way. The pass-first defenseman was 2nd in assists this past season and will look to feed those Canadians machines up front. The Canadians also bring a couple of tricks up their sleeve, with James Teekirque and Hulk Hogan 2 in their newfound positions on the ice. Both signed up as Defensemen, but we all know where they played this season... Winger and Center, respectively. That's a testament to Team Canada's experience, which brings the oldest team of all the nations. Let's bring some contrast to that with one of the best goaltenders in the league, Brandt Fuhr. Yes, that's Canada's goalie.

The defending champions, Team Eastern Europe, could be the one bringing the least talented team, but also one of the youngest. Averaging an exact (S)82 creation - against Team Canada's 81.08 - you start to see the difference unfold. You start in the net, where Team Eastern Europe brings the weakest goaltender of the six nations. This is not a knock on Boris Tsezar, who has been more than respectable during his VHL career and has planted themselves as the franchise goaltender in Malmo. In the same way that the rest of the team isn't filled with underperformers. Instead, it seems like this is a tournament where the younger players will solidify themselves in the team's core. The goal should be a more reasonable one, gel. Gel as a team and create a foundation for upcoming seasons. It does seem like we are discarding the Eastern Europeans, and they will feed off of this, so we'll be looking into what the likes of Sergey Preobrazhensky, Igor Molotov, and Siyan Yasilievich do.

Made by the fjords and sharpened by the sub-zero weather. This team's formed of some of the most resilient individuals on the planet. Team Nordic or Scandinavia has won as many gold medals as Team Canada, with about two-thirds of the area (including Greenland) and population. This is a team that works in the most efficient way possible, and their record in this tournament tells us that story. But what can we expect from them this season? Team Nordic will still have four players that won the gold medal. Papa Emeritus, Oskar Lindbergh, Jerome Reinhart, and Saku Kotkakoivu are the foundation that remained. For two of them, it'll be their last World Cup... one last chance to repeat as a group. Papa has led the goaltending tandem more times than not in the past. Will we see the same this season? After an incredible career, Jerome Reinhart ended it on a low note. Could this be one last hurray? Kotkakoivu has failed to deliver after his record-breaking S83 in Calgary, but his S86 showed what he can do. Can he lead the Nordic team? Thankfully, these guys have all the help they need. On offense, Tomas Sogaard, the Winger extraordinaire, FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY S84 Top Rookie in the VHL, while on defense, arguably one of the best all-around players in hockey, Bo Johansson. Beginnings and endings, there are a lot of different stories in this group, but the end goal is the same for all, glory.

Favorites. That's one way to describe this USA team. A simple way because there's no need to overcomplicate. Arguably two of the best goaltenders in the world are available to be chosen by GM Jacob Carson. Xavier Booberry should get the call on what could be their last WCoH. The call to defend Team USA's net, but also the call to be the captain of the North American squad. Their defense, though, gives them the edge over the field. I could bore you with Erlantz Jokinen's career accolades or Jake Thunder's grit and ability to possess and steal the puck. Yet their names create a big enough shadow that you know opposing offenses will have to respect. Offensively is where they don't appear as dominant, but sometimes the numbers lie. This team's offense may be a two-headed monster led by The Board Game Clue on Skates and Landon Wolanin, but if you are not afraid of the supporting cast, you'll get steamrolled by the fast, gritty, and physical American wingers. Let's not forget that Vinny Detroit will shatter the career record for hits.

It's all about pride. Western Europe hasn't won the gold medal since S43. And even then, some think that accolades shouldn't be for Western Europe but for Europe as a whole. That would make the last gold medal for Western Europe to be in S2. So the theme is pride. No longer can these players allow for that period to continue growing. Led by the most prolific player in the past seasons, Daniel Janser, Team Western Europe will try to show that offense is the way to go. There's a big gap between Western Europe's offensive and defensive prowess, and that will only be fixed by hard-fought, fundamentally sound hockey being played by this group. Nico Pearce is also on the team, a former league MVP. So is Ronan Lavelle, a former playoff MVP. Leandro Goncalves, the Portuguese Wonderkid, may not have an award to show, but his quality is already recognized league-wide. These four players are at the top of their game, followed by other experienced and up-and-coming players. The goal is safe, with Cole Pearce coming to the World Cup for a third time, now out of the best season of their career. But then there's the defensive group. They could seem somewhat lackluster, which isn't true, but compared to their offensive counterparts, it isn't easy to measure how they'll do. Could we see more defensive behavior being asked of those forwards? Will the defensive group exceed our expectations? Only time will tell!

This season's Team World looks like a lost brother of Team Western Europe. They look similar in one way, but they're the perfect contrast to each other in others. David Davis will keep them safe in the net. Their defensive group is incredibly skillful, with the likes of Hari Singh Nalwa, Ryuji Sakamoto, and Hammar Voss leading their efforts. But when you look at the offensive group... it doesn't look good. That group will have to rise to the task and play like they haven't played before. They'll have to get a feel for their teammates and play as one. Nezuko will have to lead the group and hope for Yun Chiang to show their growth the way they have this past season, where they are a strong contender for the Most Improved Player Trophy. This team exemplifies the beauty of this tournament and how a team, even without the best players all around, still has the chance to make real noise and challenge the higher steps of the podium.

In the end, we can expect a brilliant tournament with some quality hockey being played. Every prediction made could be spot on, but could also miss by a mile, as our Imperial friends say. It's time to sit, relax and enjoy the show. May the best team win.

Best of luck to everyone involved!

Baozi reacted to Gaikoku-hito in Vancouver Wolves Press Conference

Here we are again writing wanting to write about our crazy General Manager having a wild forty-eight hours, where he traded away one of our best players, drafted two delicious players and sign a top free agent player. Not to mention more that I am likely missing; all this leading into a new season. He also managed to get a head of some of these questions today by releasing his own press release. (ugh) Either way we are back with another press conference, so answer three questions for one TPE or all six for two TPE. As always have fun!!

    1. How close do you follow the Vancouver Wolves off season?

    2. Day of trades and too many forgotten; Can you recall all the different trades that General Manager @Frank made this off season trying to improve the roster? Hint: There was a total of ten trades.

Why?

    5. Oh, we also have a back-up goaltender that should push Brant Fuhr @Tate to be even better this season in Jeremy Swayman @Agito. Do you think we will have a goaltending controversy this season?

    6. Material, Material so much!! I guess I have to decide that last question and push the rest to next week so last question is: After all the changes this off season, how would you rate the Vancouver Wolves chances of repeating on a scale of 1-10? Why?

So much material this week as I didn`t even touch really on our two new drafted prospects, the WJC as Europe plays Canada for Gold, World Cup as we have a few player representing different countries. But I guess they can wait until next week....
