In honor of theme week I thought I'd take us on a trip down memory lane of who used to be the "old guard" of the VHL, and all of the new members we have now forming the "new guard". I joined back when the pandemic was in full swing and a lot of us didn't have a whole lot to do other than the VHL (with lockdowns and what not). That was around early 2020. It was an interesting, but tense time in VHL history. I think everyone had a little too much personal stock in the VHL since it was out main thing to do during the pandemic. I was no exception and to some extent its why I got so pissed off I went inactive. ENough about me though, let's take a look in the past.

    The Old Guard

@.sniffuM - Muff was one of my favorite members. We we're constantly down in the gaming voice channel playing something random that we had recently discovered. I'll never forget the Sims 4 drug dealer streams he used to do. Plus, I'd dare consider us friends. We'd share personal issues we were going through with each other and help the other out best we could. Plus you were so fucking funny, please never change man. Last I spoke with Muff he had entirely burnt out on sim leagues, and was done with them. We don't keep in touch too much anymore, but I definitely miss him here in the VHL.

@gorlab - Haha, oh Gorlab. Literally the most degen of the degens here in the VHL. From classic topics such as Lick or Bust, to his pretty damn good graphics, he was always an enjoyable member to have around. Yes, I know he was absolutely a shit stirrer and that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but he provided forms of entertainment that we really don't have anymore. Past midnight you could always find him in a voice chat with one or two others doing online gambling lol.

@McWolf - Ahh my GM in Saskatoon when we won it all. Along with @Doomsday as the AGM. What a great team and fun season we had. McWolf helped make me feel at home while I was still acclimating to the league. Especially considering there had been some fallout during my first season in the M as a first-gen. The fallout caused me to fall a bit in the draft and McWolf was able to draft both me, and @a_Ferk back to back. I'll always look back on our days fondly wolfy.

@Hatter - Wtf you deleted your forum account? Or do you just have some weird name on the forums that I forgot. Hatter put out some of the best VSN content the forums ever saw. Again, a super genuinely nice guy that was fun to game with. Remember teaching me to play rocket league with @Nykonax and @Josh? That was always a hilarious disaster. Miss you man.

@Sonnet - Not really part of the old guard per se, but was obnoxious enough in chat that you'd see him everywhere. He ended up pulling a twists, and fully deleted his account on the forums. He was by far the biggest weeb the VHL has ever had, and someone probably made fun of his favorite anime character so he ended up REEEing out of here.

@Proto - Again, not exactly old guard, but yeah. Proto joined here just before me. He was a VHLM GM and pulled a twists before it was cool. Ironically, he left for the same reason I did. ANTI AMERICAN SENTIMENT.

@Advantage - You can still consider adv part of the guard, but he's around so infrequently I'm going to consider him a part of the old guard. Adv was always on a health kick trying to get in shape. I honestly always appreciated that, because during the pandemic I was fucking overweight as shit. We'd share tips in the health channel of the discord and make notes of our progress. He was also by far the nicest and most reasonable members of the BOG. We had some fun late nights where we'd bullshit for a few hours. Great guy 11/10.

@Gustav  - In the same vein as ADV, I'm going to bring up Gustav. I know he's an M commish, but I still just barely seem him around. Back in the day he had every copypasta ever created in the VHL in his back pocket. A personal favorite has to be when Shawn didn't understand how timezones worked and got really pissed off about when sims happened. Gus would drag us into voice chat and play the most awful music I've ever had to listen to. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about Gus. The thunderdome section of the forums and discord used to be nonstop fights, memes, and just all kinds of insanity. Gus probably started half of that. It's been sad to see those don't really have any activity in them anymore.

@Renomitsu - Hiiiiiiiii reno. I miss you, can you take a break from doctoring and come be active again? Never forget the garden gnome story, and all the fun we had hanging out. There's so much I could write in this section about you, but I'm going to keep it short. Reno is genuinely the nicest person I have ever met, and if you haven't ever had any interaction with him I highly suggest you try to.

@Beaviss - Please don't come back from being IA.

I'm sure there's a bunch of you I forgot, but don't hate me for it. If we talked even semi-often back then you probably had a pretty big impact on my life. Also, if you're still currently a part of the guard, I didn't count you either. This is simply a old vs. new comparison and if you're still around you don't exactly qualify.

    The New Guard

@Lemorse7 - Hi, I love you. Immediately when I came back from my two years of inactivity Lemorse and I became friends. He's a lover of red pandas, I'm a lover of red pandas, there wasn't a chance we wouldn't become BFFs. Honestly I'd love to game with you or something here. It would be fun to get to know each other a bit better.

@Blazzer - I think you showed up just after I had quit. It was a pleasure playing for you in Vegas (even though you betrayed me and didnt draft me). We can't always have consistent chats because our timezones are so flipped, but you're a blast to talk/hang with.

@Moon - Hi mooooooooooner. We need to game again soon. Plus I can teach you tekkit and we can start a minecraft server or something. You've been fun to hang around with, keep being you.

@N0HBDY - Fuckin' trivia guy smh. You've been fun to chill with since coming back. I'd love to get to know you a little better too. A lot of our conversations recently have boiled down to "U MAKE TRIVIA ANSWER WRONG?!?!" then I figure out I don't know how to read and its actually my fault.

@thadthrasher - It's been great getting to know you my guy. I'm genuinely so glad to have you as my E commish because you're always on top of stuff. Plus you put up with me and my stupid requests, questions, etc. I'm coming up to Pennsylvania in a couple months and I'm going to steal all of your delicious home grown foods.

@badcolethetitan - Damn why'd they let you in to the league? We've only talked a little bit, but you're a blast to hang out with, plus you're a hell of a GM. I'm sure you'll be getting a VHL job in no time.

@Subject056 - I see you making waves here. You'll be getting your own team to GM shortly I'm sure. Keep on being awesome and you'll go far :).

Honorable Mention: @Beketov - I think its fair to consider you both part of the old guard and the new guard. Hell, I'm pretty sure you've been a part of the VHL since the big bang occurred in our universe. I know I give you a lot of shit on discord and here on the forums, but I have nothing but respect for you. You, and a key few others, have helped keep this place afloat for over half of your life now. I used to be intimidated by you when I first joined, but its nice now to at least be able to call you an acquaintance. I'm also very much looking forward to the Zoo Tycoon stream. Keep on being awesome.

Once again, I'm sure I probably forgot a few of you and I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you I promise <3. However, this post isn't as much of a blast from the past as it is me being excited for the future. The VHL seems to be in very good hands moving forward. The combination of the new guard and those who have stuck around from when I first joined create a great team that will help grow the VHL to what it deserves to be. I hope you all enjoyed this read as much as I enjoyed typing it, and I hope you all have a fun filled theme week.

"It's nice to meet you too!" Logan smiles as they shake hands "I assume Izumi has talked about me?"

"Yeah, and she has gotten me quite a few good articles about you and your team" Axel says as he goes to grab a soft drink on his desk "I just wanted to meet you face to face in order to know who she is truly getting all these tips from"

"How much is she telling you?" Logan says as he raises an eyebrow "there is quite a few things I would like to keep between us"

"Well it's just how you are feeling after each game, and what your thoughts on both the team and the country of Sweden. Don't worry, I do not think she is telling me anything she should not be"

"That's good, I like to keep some things private about our relationship. I believe that trust is the most important thing in any relationship"

"Same here, probably part of the reason I've been married for over 30 years" Axel chuckles a bit "anyways I hope that I get to hear from you soon, so I'll see you then"

The VHLM Commissioners discovered today that Miami illegally dropped an active player, Jeffrey Blake, from their roster and signed a new goalie to replace him. Philadelphia then signed Blake from free agency to their roster.

The VHLM Commissioners have discussed the situation and have come to the following decisions:

    1. Philadelphia will be allowed to keep Jeffrey Blake on their roster for the duration of the season, and will pick up the duration of the player's 3 season rights which are typically only received by drafting a player. This is to allow the player to experience as little future turnover in the VHLM as possible. Philadelphia will have Blake's rights through the S90 season, should Blake remain in the VHLM for that long.

    2. Miami is being stripped of their S89 3rd round pick for dropping an active player. Despite a potential misunderstanding by Miami around the player's updates, we hold our GMs to a certain standard and believe that the misunderstanding was easily avoidable with more attention to detail.

    Adding injuries to the VHL

Preface: There is absolutely no way adding injuries to our sim league would be fun, enjoyable, or even tolerable, but I'm going to write a media spot about this pretending it would be awesome.

Making sim leagues more realistic always adds lots of enjoyment to the league. As a result, I propose adding injuries to the VHL. Adding injuries will enhance the league in ways people would never have expected. Does it look like Seattle is by far the favorite to win it all this year? WRONG, their top line just died. Are you in a playoff match up where you're totally out skilled? Injure the other team! Naturally, we'd have to add suspensions to the league as well. Can't have no repercussions! To make it extra authentic I propose we use a wheel to determine suspension/fine and then length/amount. It'll feel just like the NHL. Is your player the hottest player in the VHL right now? Well, they might take a fall the first day of the season and they'll never be the same! Depending on injury severity, there should definitely be TPE loss. Now you might be thinking, twists won't players be more prone to going inactive if their player is injured? You'd be wrong! We could add a new earning method called "injury rehab". You'd have to do two PTs a week to only earn 2 TPE for that week! After all, rehabbing an injury is hard work, and a very slow process. We could even incorporate substance abuse issues into the VHL. Not only would your player have a chance to get injured, you could also be sent to the VHL's player assistance program. While your player is in the player assistance program you would be forced to make video podcasts of you meditating and/or talking about life in a philosophical way. Once you return your player's chance at having another substance abuse problem would double! Every subsequent time you return to the player assistance program you would have to double the time your earning is restricted. Depending on how widely loved injuries are (I bet they'll be a hit), we could consider adding traumatic brain injuries which have a 0.001% chance of killing your player on the spot! You'd be forced to recreate and your player would be manually removed from the current season. This would add a much needed difficulty boost to GMing in the VHL. It's too easy as it is, and this could throw a fun wrench in things. These proposed changes could initially be implemented just in the VHL, but I think it would benefit the E and the M as well. Implementation of all of these new systems would be a cakewalk for @Josh. I would know, I'm a developer too! Honestly development is just really easy and I can't believe Josh takes as long as he does on things.

Postface: I can't believe no one has "added injuries" as an April fools joke. If done right, you'd have VHL users screeching into the next week. Also, absolutely do no search "injury oof" on Google looking for a funny injury picture. It's just all gore.

twists got a reaction from WildfireMicro in What if the VHL had Trading Cards?
So obviously the idea is super cool and fun, but it definitely requires A LOT of backend work. We used to make player cards way back when for graphic PTs and that just kinda fell off. The unfortunate reality is that we'd all think it was cool for a week and then completely forget about it. Then Josh would just be extra grumpy he had to work on it lol.
  19. Hmmm
twists reacted to WildfireMicro in What if the VHL had Trading Cards?
Hey guys and gals and everything in between WildfireMicro here with an idea that just popped into my head while I was looking at Discord: What If The VHL Had Trading Cards? Basically, this media spot will go over some ideas for a potential VHL trading card series and how I personally think it could work. Now obviously these are nothing more than suggestions however I think that pondering on what could be can be good for us all. I will be going over what each trading card can look like, how users will get packs of them, and how each user will get their player on a card. So without any further ado, let's begin!

So first of all, let's go over how each card will look like. Basically the cards will most likely each be graphics of the players render inside a card. So no these will not be physical cards, nor will they be bought with actual real money (we don't want to bring an NFT issue into here). They will just be renders of the VHL players that we can collect and trade around. Now one thing that might make it easier on the creators of the cards is that I think only players who have played in the VHL and not in the lower leagues should get cards.

There are probably some arguments for getting VHLE or even VHLM cards, however for the purposes of this media it will be VHL only. So with that being said, how would a user be able to attain a pack? Honestly, this is a big tricky part for me, and it can go a number of different ways. I personally believe that a user should be able to get a pack a day for free at the very least, and maybe later down the line find some way to figure out how users can be able to earn extra packs. Someone smarter then me can figure out how a user would earn those extra packs, but regardless one free pack a day I feel is pretty fair in the end.

Also I believe that each card should have a tier based on how much TPE the player has. However, this can have the unfortunate side effect of putting extra strain on those making the cards so just having each card have a single tier and only adding a new card for a player should be done when a player switches teams. Maybe also eventually having special cards like Hall of Fame or Awards cards can be something cool we can do. Now obviously we would not have anybody male those cards for nothing, so maybe having job pay can be good for those doing it. This does have an unfortunate effect of maybe being too taxing of a job for the reward, but like I said someone smarter than me can figure it out.

While this is not so much of a proposal as it is just thinking of the possibilities, I still hope that you enjoyed the idea that I brought up. This isn't a big task that needs to be done right now, and I understand if we have bigger fish to fry at the moment. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed this and I hope to see you all on the ice!

twists reacted to Baby Boomer in How the standings will look like at the end of the season in the VHLE
    Welcome everyone,

I know that the season is already well underway, but I still wanted to make my own prediction of what the VHLE’s standings will look like at the end of the season. In this media spot, I will look at each team and predict where they will end the season.

    Stockholm Vikings  @twists

    Current: 1st
    Projected: 1st

If you look at the Vikings roster, they certainly don’t have the best one. However, on the ice they play like the best team in the league and their record of 16 wins in 22 games shows just that. They are carried by their first line composed of Don Aven @Novanod, John Richards @John Cimarno and Logan Foley @WildfireMicro that respectively have 31, 30 and 22 points. Aven and Richards are both leading the league for the number of points. Even if on paper Stockholm’s defense looks a little weak, they can count on one of the best goalies in the league since the start of the season in Travis Clark @ClarkClanT. Clark leads the league in the save percentage (0.944) and is third for the GAA (2.07).

    Rome Gladiators  @Baby Boomer

    Current: 3rd
Projected: 2nd (not biased at all)

The Rome Gladiators are not having the start to the season they expected and are sitting in 3rd place in the standings. On paper, the Gladiators are probably the best team in the league and now they only need to show it on the ice. Their forwards core led by the captain BjorkaBjorn BjornaBjorkson @JardyB10 and his assistants Hannibal Barca @DreMin15 and Francesco Mancini @GioSivo is one of the best if not the best in the league. The only weakness we can notice on the team is probably the lack of depth defenseman that can help Bobby Bob in their own zone. In the net the team has Matthew McCagg @Jack kidd who is currently doing a really good job.

    Cologne Express  @leandrofg

    Current: 4th
    Projected: 3rd

The defending champion of the Renaissance Cup lost a couple of players who moved up in the VHL, but their roster is still looking really good, especially their defenseman core that is probably the best in the league led by Harkat Mulds @hylands, Michael Shotter @TacocaT9 and Justin Lion @Emperor_Fun in the net. The group of forwards is not exceptional, but they still have players that won the Cup with the team last season that are back like Damian Steele @73MPL4R and Lorenzo Cobberson @Hendrix Cobberson. There is also Al Land @Big Dee who was on the team two seasons ago when they broke the record for the best regular season in the history of the VHLE.

    Geneva Rush  @MexicanCow123

    Current: 2nd
    Projected: 4th

When you look at Geneva’s roster, it does not look like the second-best team in the league, but when you addition the performances of some players on the team, you have yourself a very competitive team. Indeed, the first line composed of Jasper Davis @Josh, Maxwell Mathias @Underclass_Hero and Kobe Johnson @Vkobe-v is the best line in the league now. In the net, they have the rookie Merome Dilson @MexicanCow123 who is showing great thing since the start of the season. If he continues like that, he will certainly be in the talks for the Orian D H Chiester IX Trophy awarded to the best goalie of the regular season.

    Istanbul Red Wolves  @Masu Chan

    Current: 6th
    Projected: 5th

On paper, the Istanbul Red Wolves have one of the best rosters in league, but they are clearly not showing that on the ice. Indeed, the Red Wolves are currently sitting in 6th place in the standings, and nothing is showing that they will improve after their seventh losses in the last eight games. However, Istanbul has the second-best defensive group in the league and two good goalies that can help them turn this season around fight for a place in the playoffs. Indeed, Mark Calaway @Beketov is leading the defenseman for the number of points and is fourth in the league in the same category.

    Oslo Storm  @JB123

    Current: 5th
    Projected: 6th

After taking part in the last three Renaissance Cup finals, the best days of the Oslo Storm are behind them. However, the team accustomed us to have teams that are not the best on paper and during the regular season, but also that surprise us when the playoffs come. Oslo is probably a little bit below the middle of the league in all the positions, but they can still count on great players in offense like Keno Akara @Keno and in defense like Admir Bala @Tyler. They also claimed George Sanderson @SpicyGecko as a free agent, a new defenseman that will come help solidified the team in their own zone.

The only thing I can say about the start to the season of the Vasteras Iron Eagles is very disappointing. Indeed, the roster of the Iron Eagles really does not look bad, and they certainly do not have one of a team who is last in the league. Even if it is not the best in the league, the offense of the team is still composed of good players such as Sebastien Dokis @Sebastien, Keita Kourou @woog and Vinny Lecavalier @Spartakiller2. However, the problem of this team is their defense and their goalie. When you only have three defenseman and none of them can be on the top pair of a winning team, you have a problem.

I don’t think there is much to say here. After being a consistent good team for the past seasons, the Bratislava Watchmen entered a rebuild last season and they are still in the middle of it. They have a lot of players on their roster that they claimed at the end of the free agent period, so they are not going to be as bad as the Gladiators last year, but they will not be good. The Watchmen will certainly surprise some teams this season, but I don’t think that can do much more than that with the roster they have.

Thanks everyone for reading all of this. This is my opinion and as you can see, I am clearly biased, so you don’t have to agree lol, but that is the only thing you can do about it sorry.
