    Halifax, Nova Scotia - Canada
With the VHLM draft taking place this past Saturday and free agency opening immediately afterward, rosters in the M began to take shape.
For Lexie Leitner, a first time general manager who was recently named to the Halifax 21st front office, it was a busy but exciting weekend.  Halifax added 10 new players with their draft selections, 1 new goalie by trade, and 2 new players so far through free agency. Following the weekend frenzy, I had the opportunity to chat with Leitner about the weekend and the state of the team going into Season 93.

    ༻❁༺

"Lexie, thank you for taking the time with us today and congratulations on the new job."

"Thank you, Lauren, and it's my pleasure!"

"So let's get right into it, you were named as the next GM of the Halifax 21st just over a week ago, how are you finding the new role? And maybe you could just talk me through your experience joining the team."

"Sure, yeah, so far it's been a challenging but exciting job.  With very little time between being named to the team and the VHLM draft, it was a bit of a chaotic week reaching out to draft eligibles, doing scouting reports, and getting prepared for our picks.  Thankfully, I was lucky to have Will @Will3, our AGM, who has been a tremendous help in the scouting process and keeping up with the day-to-day management of the team.  To be honest, I wasn't certain that I'd get this job-- being a little lighter on experience than some candidates-- and there was a chance I might have ended up in Mexico City since they were also looking for a GM, but when it was announced that I was named to Halifax, I was super excited for this opportunity and I really hope I can live up to expectations and bring success to the city and the organization."

"It sounds like a lot of your focus so far has been on the draft and adding new players to your roster.  What was your strategy going into the draft?"

"Well, when I joined here, we already had a couple of 1st round picks and we were able to acquire a 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th by trade.  My goal was simply to add good players and quality people to our roster right away to give us the best chance to compete this season.  In our draft scouting, Will and I had identified a list of players who we really liked because of their on-ice skills and their draft interviews.  Ideally, they checked both of those boxes for us.  We're very happy with the players we were able to select and I think our roster is in a great place for the beginning of the season.  Obviously, things will likely change in the coming days and weeks with more free agent signings and development, but I'm confident that our core is strong and we've got some great young prospects as well who are already making a name for themselves."

"So you picked 2nd overall in this draft and it seemed like you were very quick to select Pierre Marc Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito.  With your 6th overall pick, you surprised some people by selecting Andrew Skilton @ace_five_.  Talk me through those two picks and how you came to decide on those two players with your important 1st round picks."

“Both of these players interviewed very well and really exemplified the qualities we were looking for, you know, strong character, hard working, involved in the locker room, and competitive on the ice.  With Bouchard, we really wanted to make sure we had a great number one center who could really stabilize our top line.  He’s got great defensive sensibilities too so we know he can be relied on in all situations.  And as for Skilton, we were just really impressed with his development leading up to the draft and I know he was on the radar of a few other teams. Sure, there’s an argument that he might have been available in the 2nd round, but we just didn’t want to risk missing out on a player who we are confident is going to be a strong player and leader for us this season.”

“Your next two picks were at 12th and 13th overall, talk me through those selections.”

“Yeah, we had a number of players on our list that were still available who we liked, but Novotny @Patrik Tallinder and Dogwood @dogwoodmaple were always the next two that we wanted.  Novotny-- a little bit like Skilton-- had been really rising fast on draft boards and we were really impressed with his training during the offseason.  His agent, is a known quantity around the VHL as well so we’re pretty confident what we’re getting with him.  And Dogwood, similarly, really gave us a lot in his draft interview and was developing well during the offseason. In our scouting, we also found out that he’d played with Bouchard before so the thought was that reuniting them could spark some instant chemistry.”

“So you then picked Tommy Shelby @Will at 22nd overall and had a long break before 43rd where you picked Connor Simard @Alex99.  Were you also targeting those players?  And were there any players in those early rounds that got away from you?”

“Yeah, so it’s funny you should ask, actually, with both of those we had a player in mind that we really wanted to pick that was taken just before our selection, so we had to pivot our strategy a little bit here and even explored some possibilities to trade into the 4th round.  Obviously, that didn’t happen. With Shelby at 22nd, he was a player we’d been targeting, but didn’t necessarily expect to be able to pick because of where our picks landed.  With Shelby, we’re very confident in our center ice position now and that was certainly a priority for us because there were always likely to be more wingers available later on.  And then with Simard, I was honestly shocked to see that he was still available at 43 so it was kind of a no-brainer for us because we needed a left winger and he’ll fit in perfectly with Bouchard and Dogwood on our top line.”

“You didn’t make a trade into the 4th round, but you did trade away a goalie after selecting another one in the draft.  What was the thinking around the pick and the trade?”

“We viewed goaltending as a priority position for us this season so that’s why we traded for Wazinski @samthemancub before the draft.  Going into the draft with two goalies, we always felt confident that we would never have to reach for one.  At 46, we had the opportunity to take Jon Webber III @Webberj, who we were really high on from our draft interviews and scouting reports. So even though we already had two goalies that we liked, we saw it as an opportunity to add some value in the crease and made the pick. After that, it was really about just becoming compliant with the VHLM roster rules allowing only 2 goalies.  On a personal level, it is difficult to trade away a good player and we wish Cavill @Firekiss all the best in Vegas.”

“And so your last three picks in the draft were Dorji Khan @Oddpurplefly, Ty Duke @TheDuke, and Robert Tango @trains.  What can you tell us about those selections?”

“With this draft, we knew that there would be hidden talent to be had all the way into the 7th round so it really kind of became a matter of selecting players who we see as being capable of developing over the course of the season.  Khan, in particular, we had done some scouting on and liked the potential we saw there.  With Duke and Tango, we add another player at the center position who has plenty of room to grow and a right winger with some versatility that may help us on special teams.”

“When the draft ended, free agency opened up and Halifax managed to sign a couple of players.  What were you looking for with those signings and how are those players doing so far?”

“Yeah, we were absolutely thrilled to sign Robin Sierra @ethanjaeda who has been putting in some great work off the ice to get his game to another level.  He’s also been awesome in the locker room as well so we’re really happy with the early returns on him.  And Captain Nugget Jr. @Captain nugget comes into the lineup with some real skill and finishing ability on the right side and really has the potential to be an impact player in our lineup this season.”

“Right now, it seems that there is one hole on the roster as it’s currently constructed, and that is at defense on the second pairing.  What are your plans to address this need?”

“Ideally, we would be able to find someone in free agency or on waivers that we could bring in right away, but at the moment it’s just not looking like that player is out there.  We’re also exploring some potential trade targets and if the right deal presents itself, we’re definitely open to making a move.  It’s a balance between wanting to give ourselves the best chance to win this year, but also not leaving ourselves too depleted for the future, so the deal would have to make sense.  I guess we’ll see what happens in time, though I’m confident that the players we have are capable of compensating for that with extra minutes right now.”

“Finally, looking around the league, which teams do you think will be the biggest challenge to compete with on the ice?”

“Well, I think Ottawa had a great draft.  I know they managed to grab a few players that we liked so I think our scouting probably revealed some similar things.  They’ve also got a pretty complete roster as well, so they’ll have the depth to get out to a good start early on.  Saskatoon and Houston, I think, will also be good this season.  Saskatoon just had a ton of picks and I think they got some great talent on that roster as well, and Houston– I mean, I just can’t count out @AJW as he’s got a knack for finding great players on waivers and in free agency so we’ll see what he can cook up this season.”

“Okay, one more quick question before I let you go because you mentioned AJW and waiver signings.  Last season, Lucy Leitner was a waiver signing for the Houston Bulls and was selected 3rd overall in the VHL draft by Riga, and 2nd overall by Vasteras in the VHLE.  For those who may not know, what’s your relation to Lucy?”

“Yeah! So Lucy is my cousin. It was really cool seeing her get drafted so high and it’ll be fun to see how she does in Vasteras this season.  It would have been kind of cool to be a VHLM GM while she was still playing in this league, but who knows, maybe there will be an opportunity down the road to compete against one another.  Anyway, I’m really happy for her.”

“Great! Well, thank you for your time and best of luck to you and the 21st this season.”

    “Thanks, Lauren.”

With the first games of Season 93 in the VHLM happening today, Halifax will take on the Ottawa Lynx in back-to-back games.  In what may become a real rivalry in the Eastern Conference this season, Halifax and Ottawa will both want to claim victory first and start their seasons off on the right foot.  It’s a great opportunity for both teams to see how they measure up against one another and it’s sure to be an exciting night of action.

    Notes:
I’ll be writing a bi-weekly column on the Halifax 21st this season called Pier 21 so keep an eye out for those if you’re interested in following the story of the 21st this season.   Game updates: Halifax took game 1 of the season against Ottawa by a score of 2-1 in a shootout, but fell in the second game of the back-to-back, 6-2.

We are a few days out from the start of a new season. Feeling pretty optimistic about the team this year. We built the team at last Trade Deadline with this upcoming season in mind, and everything has kind of just fell into place. Last year we were stressed just to make playoffs, this year we have an expectation amongst ourselves to be a contender. Feel very lucky to have won Top GM in my first season back as a VHL GM. I think a lot of things just kinda came together last season, I don’t think I did anything too insane. It was a buyers market and if anything I was lucky to have inherited a solid roster with potential that just needed a few good pieces. Excited for the future as Hylands has already been such a valuable add to the management team. Hopefully we can prove why the award was handed out to the Americans! Pretty solid weekend. I had a few Guinness’ in celebration of Paddy’s Day. Watched the Players Championship, won a few bets, lost a few more. Watched T Swifts Eras tour with my daughter for the 7th (no exaggeration) time… got a busy week of work coming up, not looking forward to it lol.

    An Outlook

The Chicago Phoenix are coming into the season with high hopes of finishing in a playoff spot. With teams like Los Angeles focusing on the future, Chicago feels like their time to make the playoffs is now. It's going to be a difficult road though, as teams like Vancouver and Seattle this off-season have brought in players to help them compete in the playoffs, shortening their rebuild. I have three teams in Chicago, Seattle, and Vancouver battling it out for the last wild card spot, and it's going to be a battle all the way to the end. Chicago is most likely going to finish ahead of Seattle, but behind Vancouver, so they are going to need a bit of sim luck to be able to make it in. However, a couple seasons ago Chicago was able to secure a third seed in the playoffs, despite not being a very good team. They'll be looking to run that luck back and this time, finally make a run into the playoffs.

After the military service, the World Cup and a sweep defeat with the Birmingham Dragons against the Winnipeg Royals, his dad's team in the ProAm, Callum is heading home. He wonders whether Rin is already back in NYC. Well, he did not have to wait long, for that question to be answered. As soon as he landed at JFK and switched his phone back on he got a text from his roomie. 'Landing at JFK, 1230hrs. Can you pick me up?'. The Swiss immediately went to the next car rental and got a car for the day, as he had only 30 minutes left, until the 'Nagasaki Nightingale' landed. So he threw his belongings into the boot, texted the Japanese defender that he will pick her up and got back to the arrival terminal to do so. It took quite some time until the minuscule back showed up and Janser immediately understood what the issue was. 'Beast' left New York with one piece of carry-on and one medium sized checking luggage. She arrived in the Big Apple with two extra duffel bags, which looked pretty heavy. Callum relieved Rin from the luggage, carrying as if it weighed nothing.
'Did you buy a samurai kit while you were in Japan?'.
'No, most of it are the Manga's you have asked for. And then some clothing my family insisted I take with me. I could at least talk them out of cooking for me for the next few weeks. They still think there is no decent food in the US.'
'They do not know about Myoko-san's Japanese Restaurant in Soho then?'
'They think I invented him so they do not worry about my well being.'
'You should bring them over once. So I can meet them. You told me so much about your family, I would really like to get to know them in person.'
'Funny you should say that. My dad mentioned that him and mother would come over during the coming season.'
'Wow, that is awesome. It is their first time in the US, innit?'
'Yes, it is. But still some time till then.'
While talking the 'Beauty and the Beast' have arrived at the car, and CGY dropped the luggage in the boot, while Rin sat on the passenger seat.
And so Cal drove Rin and himself home to Mulberry Street to their appartement.

So, S93 starts...soon? This upcoming year I'll be playing for the Stockholm Vikings. I honestly forget if most players play one or two seasons in the VHLE if they're higher earners - I think it's one season but not 100% sure. Either way, hopefully we're able to be competitive and have a fun season. I'll be going into the season on the lower end of the TPE scale for the VHLE so my individual stats may not be that good but hopefully I can pick it up towards the end of the season. The Flyers stink again - the last couple games were the first time all season I turned them off before the end of the game. Having a coach that stifles offensive creativity to grind out results in a "re-building" season is manageable when they're winning but very hard to watch when they're not. Went and saw Dune: Part Two this weekend. I haven't read the books but very much enjoyed both Part 1 and Part 2 and was surprised that my wife did as well.

Dick Hammer was able to get a hold of the very busy, Americans alternate captain to get some statements from the young Swiss.
DH: 'Hi Callum, thanks for agreeing to talk to us.'
    CGY: 'Anytime, Dick.'
DH: 'Let's start with the elephant in the room. Team Western Europe did not do so well in the WC. Are you disappointed?'
CGY: 'I mean nobody likes losing. Alas, we were a relatively young team and had to face the best the VHL has to offer. We gave our best, which in this case was not good enough. We paid a tuition fee so to speak to get better for the next time around in two years' time.'
DH: 'At the moment you are still involved in the ProAm tournament with the Birmingham Dragons, who are second in the standing. You are sporting a 'bad boy' image there, contending for the undisputed heavyweight championship and collect a lot of penalties. Your closest adversary for the meanest SOB is Fradin 'Lumberjack' McGryer. Any words for that?'
CGY: 'It is all in good fun. We all know that we earn our pay playing hockey and nobody gets hurt. It is a fun tournament, after all.'
DH: 'How does it feel to defend against your HOF dad? Do you have an advantage as you know him?'
CGY: 'I wish. The dude has still some aces up his sleeves. Maybe players who played against him back in the days have a better chance to stop him than me. I may also be tied back subconsciously, as I was raised to respect my elders.'
DH: 'Speaking of which. How was your upbringing in a VHL-Superstar household?'
CGY: 'To be honest, I did not realize that dad was such a big number. I just attributed it as part of being in a very successful team. And the other team members and the brass of Calgary were more like family than working colleague. That was just the way the Wranglers ticked and still tick to this day. Padrino Gonzo took over the reins from Kris and he strives to have the same family vibe in the organisation as his predecessor.'
DH: 'Have you followed Rice's moves since he stepped down as GM of the Wranglers?'
CGY: 'Of course. I consider him family. I was winding him up when he returned to Miami where his GM career started. Asked him whether he gave up on hockey and retired to play more golf.'
DH: 'How was it growing up a millionaire's son?'
CGY: 'Well, my parents did not go crazy on the spending. You see, if you take the stereotypical Swiss and the stereotypical Scot, you get the probably most tightfisted person on the planet.' He laughs. 'To be fair, they never penny pinched on anything related to education. But if I wanted a new bicycle, I only got it for birthdays or Christmas. Or when I was a teenager, I could do the odd job during the summer holidays to contribute to acquisitions not considered vital by my parents.'
DH: 'So you were a blue collared son of a millionaire?'
CGY: 'You could say that. My parents taught me discipline and a good work ethic amongst many other things. They showed me, that nothing comes for free and that one has to work to get what they want. As I said, I did not struggle for tuition fees. But if I wanted to go clubbing or partying during my time at uni, I had to finance that myself. It made me appreciate money and how long the majority of people need to work to be able to afford stuff.'
DH: 'Switching from the past to the future. How do you see the Americans faring in the coming season.'
CGY: 'Due to Mr Wong's activity in the offseason, we were able to replace retired Ducky with Jeb, without trading away too much of our future. And with our prospects Gretzky and Reynolds, we should be able to replace Vinny and Freddy, who are in the autumn of their career. I think we should be in contention for a playoff spot. After that, anything can happen.'
DH: 'Okay that's it for me. Thanks for your time.'
    CGY: 'Fuggedabowdit.'

CGY's stats for the Western Europe in the WC read as follows:
    Round Robin: 10gp, 1g, 5a, 6pts, +1, 22 PIM, 23 hits, 17sb, no fights
    Quarter Final: 1gp, 0g, 0a, 0pt, -2, 2 PIM, 3 hits, 1sb, no fights

And here the statline so far for the ProAm:

This past season in the VHLM, my first season here on the forum, has come and gone in the blink of an eye.  It still feels like yesterday that I signed a contract with Houston, not knowing what to expect, how I might fit in, if I could compete, and where I might be in a short season's time.  Well, the season came and passed and what an experience it was.  The longer I'm here, the more I realize how lucky I was to play on my hometown team in Houston, but also to have such great teammates and a GM who really cared.  He'll probably cringe hearing me say it one more time, but he's the best-- @AJW deserves all the recognition he gets for the outstanding job he does daily to keep his players invested, engaged, and continuing to develop.  I learned so much from him this past season and he'll continue to be someone I hold in high regard as I go further with my player and GM careers.  Thank you AJ for everything!

My teammates too!  From the first couple of weeks of the season, we really hit it off and became a tight knit group that supported each other in the locker room and across the forum.  Players like @Nathan_8 and @jake seemed to always be hanging out in the locker room, keeping the team going.  With @Mutti, I was inspired by his creativity and humor on the forums to write some fun articles myself and the back and forth we started together was something that really kept me going throughout the season.  I really hope to continue that with him even as we continue on to the VHLE and VHL, especially as we'll get to be teammates on Vasteras!  I also really appreciated the steady locker room presence of @Crstats23, who became our captain by the end of the season.  His stable leadership, experience, an consistency was a great example for us newer players who were still getting our feet under us.  He's been awesome in multiple locker rooms I've been in and I hope to be teammates again someday.  On top of that, I've had great chats with @Nyx who is going to go on to have a fantastic career with Helsinki, and @MicahC who also brought some enthusiasm and creativity to the team.  @ctoland102 was also an awesome teammate who posted some great graphics and really brought the physicality on the ice last season.  And @CowboyinAmerica, who went 1st overall in all 3 drafts over this past season, was an incredible addition that brought a lot to the team on the ice and in the locker room.  Oh-- and who could forget Superbot!  @Rhynex Entertainment was the best leader a team could ever ask for and really gave us a chance to go far this season.  It's only a shame we couldn't get the Founder's Cup in his hands as it would have been supremely deserving!  There are more awesome players and I'd hate to forget anyone-- the whole team was just such a great group and I'm really going to miss our chats and the fun we had in Houston.

With that said, all good things must come to an end.  We all knew when the season started that a lot of this team would be moving on and we'd all be divided between teams in the VHLE and VHL.  Having experienced the excitement of the drafts, it was bitter sweet to see our team drafted all over the world. I'm very proud to have been a member of such a great Bulls team and as much as I would have wanted to return for another season in Houston, I'm ready to move on to the next level.  I am honored to have been selected 2nd overall by Vasteras and I'm really excited to join this team as I think we'll have a real shot at winning the championship in the VHLE this next season!  In the VHL draft, going 3rd overall was much higher than I ever expected at the start of the season and I'm thrilled to be going to Riga, which seems to be a young team on the rise.  In a season's time, I hope to be able to join that lineup and become an impact player that can contribute to Continental Cup contention.  I really appreciate both of these teams using their picks to select me and I hope I can live up to your hopes for my player!

I'm also excited for the new prospects that come with being a VHLM GM.  I hope to be half the GM that AJ was this past season and I really want to be able to offer new players the same kind of excitement, fun, and community that I had when I joined.  That experience, I think, is what really keeps people here for the long term-- that genuine community and fun that we're all looking for while we enjoy sim hockey.  We can all play a sim manager on our own, but doing it with other people, collaborating, and following each other's progress is what makes it worthwhile.

Yeah, I know, this is probably more sentimental than most people would want to read, but I guess this is the time for it as the offseason winds down and the rollover to S93 is in full effect.  I've got some fun ideas for articles next season and I hope to continue to collaborate with some of my former Houston teammates.  The drama must go on!  I wish all the best to the S92 Houston Bulls who are all finding new homes and I hope our paths cross again in the future.
