Former Moscow Menace AGM Vince Wong, recently took over the New York Americans. A team in which he was preveiously General Manager. As the season progresses, the games have become more important for the Americans. They are tied in points with Chicago for the final NA Playoff Spot. As we pass through Trade Deadline, the Amercians look at their upcoming games, and see that they have a very important back-to-back against the Moscow Menace. Moscow GM @Spartan  made a point of writing a hit peice against his former AGM, who has done nothing but shown love to him.

Spotlight: Game 479 and Game 490. A back-to-back matchup in Russia.

The New York Americans and the Moscow Menace face off in the first ever Cold War Cup. Hopefully a back-to-back will be scheduled every year, so this can become tradition. What are the stakes? Although nothing has been confirmed, but there are rumours that the two old colleagues have put a little wager on the line.

For two franchises that have had a difficult finding success with real trophies, at least this made up one will have one of them be able to call themselves a cup champion.

"Chip and a chair, that's how we're playing it now. We're still at the table, we're not going away. We have a weird system built here in New York, and these pieces just need time to adjust to Americans hockey. I'm not worried in the slightest, if there's any team that can pop off a 17 game win streak to finish the season it's us."

Bold words coming from New York Americans goaler WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW following the trade made with Warsaw to acquire Clueless Wallob and Alfred Champagne, and subsequent games played since. The Americans goaler has not spoken to media since the trade - as veteran goaler Clueless Wallob @DMaximus came in to supplant the young Mongolian between the pipes.

"They've been a great influence to me, since I was young. We both represented Asia during the world juniors, I hope to wear the World sweater in the world championships. The numbers are a bit of a lie, we play a unique style in the D zone, the way our defenseman move and center makes plays. I'm benefiting from it being the only VHL system to play in, he's got 7 seasons and 5 coaches to work around."

Cal was very excited after he scanned through the New York Times. 'Rin', he called out to his roomie, who was just preparing some ramen for the two of them, 'Guess who is declaring for the S94 VHLM draft?' 'I don't know', answered the wiry Japanese defender 'Tom Cruise?' 'Ha, funny that. But you are not so off-target. My 'cuz Maverick Gonçalves tries his luck with the big boys.'
'You have a cousin named Gonçalves?'
'Yeah, well he is not a cousin by blood. But his dad is my godfather and we grew up in Switzerland, though not in the same town. We spent a lot of time hiking in the summer holidays.'
'Ah I see, that must be Leandro's son then?'
'He is indeed. Dude went immediately to play hockey, while I was freeclimbing. For sure he inherited some of padrinho Gonzo's talent. I hated to play against the guy, so ambitious... and good.'
'You think we will draft him? You know, to keep the Swiss monopoly in the league?'
'Not my place to say of course, but we could do a lot worse than get him on our team. And god knows we need help in front of the net. At the very least that would prevent him making me look bad... again.'
Kagamine broke out in laughter and said: 'Ramen is done. Have some to cheer you up on that memory.'
'Just you wait, if he plays against me, he plays against you also. Maybe you should train a little bit harder going forward.'
    'I hate you.'
    'I know.'

Tord Yvel Drafts his All Star team.

Hello and Welcome to VHL times.
Today we sat down and had a Chat with Tord Yvel.
Who didn’t make the All-star game.
Dare one say he was FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY!? No, certainly not.
He’s been dogshit all season and both him and we know he shouldn't be within two states of an All star Game.
Instead he get’s to sit here and answer my questions, Lucky him!

This time We have asked him to pick out his AllStar five.
Based solely on this season, he has to motivate why he chose the player he did.

We’ll start of with the top 3 forwards, 1 of each, Leftwing, center, rightwing.

    The stage is your’s Tord.

    Left Wing
    AK92 wit da Hoodie - @hedgehog337
What a season! this is Hall of fame numbers for sure. 47 Games 69 points.
Looking at the numbers it’s easy to believe that this is a blue-line coastin’ puck hog.
But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. With 171 bone crushing hits he is engaged everywhere one the ice!
    Goalies and Players be Aware!
He’ll snipe, he’ll crush, ya girl will blush!
(Or Gush, pick one depending on age and other factors)

    Center
I’m not certain who to pick here
There’s two/three Centers that would all be deserving and a lot more Centers is just a smidge from being in contention.
the top is all worthy of this place so i just have to go with my gut here.

    The Frenchman - @OrbitingDeath
23 goals and 49 assists. for 72 points
    Top of da league!
I sometimes overvalue assists but I love a good pass more than a snipe
Henrik over Daniel Sedin and so on.
And if you like nice apples you should go to the Capital and watch This Tricoloure machine!

    Right Wing

    Ron DeSantis!
(Easy there,  I’m Kidding. None of those fucks can come to my All-Star Game)
This one was a bit easier, With only 3 RW’s in the top 20 of points.

    Yaroslav Trunov - @qripll
Second in the league with 70 points spread pretty evenly with 33 goals and 37 assists.
Trunov seems to be a jack of all trades for the Chicago phoenix’s, 164 hits gets him on the 8th place in hits for in the league.
Watch out if meet Trunov out there or you might be eating pizza through a straw next time!

For this there was a clear cut number one
Then there was a whole flurry of worthy players, impossible to do everyone justice.....
I will choose to go with one  of my personal favorites for 2nds All Star Defender.

    1st Defender

    Mark Calaway - @Beketov
40 apples and 16 goals for 56 points. As a defender is
    pretty, preeeeettttyyy preeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttttyyyy goood!.
That put’s him 19th in total scoring and the only D-man in the top 20.
Calaway gives his team an offensive output without sacrificing to much on the defense side it looks like
124 Hits and 105 Blocked potatoes.

    2nd Defender
The only one that might be a bit controversial, but would definitely be my pick.

    Liv Slater - @Subject056
Putting up 48 points in 48 games
All while having some of the nicest numbers on the back end
with 148 bone crushing hits and blocked the puck 153 times
    Liv is doing something right.
And all this on a rebuilding Vancouver team.
    That is fantastic!

STZ reacted to Scurvy in Ninefingers traded to Watchmen!
The trade deadline came, and we saw Oslo’s right winger, Logan Ninfingers traded to the 2ndplace, Bratislava Watchmen.  The Watchmen trail the league leading Cologne Express by 20 points in the standings so they are hoping that Ningfingers can assist offensively to narrow that gap and try and crush them come playoff time.

Ninefingers brings some size and offensive instincts to a Bratislava club that is loaded with good forwards.  So far, it seems Ninefingers has had some early struggles putting the puck in and getting comfortable. He just scored his first goal for the club so hopefully he’s worked the new team nervousness off and can start producing.  Ninefingers likes to shoot early and often so he needs to keep that mindset, grip the stick a little lighter, and keep working and it will all work out.

In his first six games he has 1 goal 2 assists and 19 hits.

My final Media Spot while being player-less! I’m still tossing around ideas for a position, just waiting to see what the field does now. I know at least 3 big names are going with defenders, waiting to see what some of the other big names do, particularly Leandro. I’d like to get the chance to maybe stand above the crowd positionally. Landon Wolanin was great, and probably a top 10 forward of his time, but I’d like to get the chance to maybe tickle the Hall of Fame conversation. If I’m going to go TPE crazy, like I inevitably will, I may as well be in the running.

I am also hoping to get to play at least a few games with my San Diego Marlins. I’ve made it very clear to them that they should take whoever they get, particularly first-gens, and I’ll figure it out after the fact. We’ll see what the VHLM draft brings and I’ll do the best with whatever I get!

I do have an idea for each position as to what I’d want to do, and I think I can make something distinctly good at each position. Really excited to get build-crafting again and learn from some of the mistakes I made along the way with Landon. I’m also hoping to maybe make some off-meta decisions, and craft a player who can carry their growth a little better throughout their career.

It's really amazing to see so many players eligible for the VHLM, and see teams so full. I’m excited to get to meet and get the context around so many of these new users and maybe help them find their way to great VHL careers. I’m still really proud looking around the league and seeing all of the great S84-87 players that I got to help in the early stages of their careers making a lasting impact on their teams, their teammates and the league as a whole. Not to steal any of their credit, of course, but it’s a bit rewarding to feel like I made a bit of a difference along the way.

December and January did… not go the way I anticipated, and things are only looking a little wilder for February and beyond. I don’t anticipate it getting in the way of my ability to be in front of a computer for at least the length of time it takes to write some words on a page, but I hope that I can find a bit of security in the coming weeks. That is one thing I miss about the COVID era, was always knowing what my next day would look like. Things are always changing now, and it is a bit exhausting trying to keep up with all of the changes. But having something that can remind me of what day is Monday, and keep track of the days going by is nice. A week-to-week routine and knowing when my next measly affiliate check comes in to tell me the month, is pretty great.

To my next player, and the next 2 years of chaos!

    1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The user is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, GMs, that prohibits the GMs from doing, you know, just trying to sign the player. You can't do that.
1c-b. Once the user is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the GMs, like, "I'm gonna sign for ya! I'm gonna play for your team! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to sign and then don't sign, you have to still sign. You cannot not sign. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, signing motion of the contract, and then, until you just sign it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the signing up here, like this, but then there's the recreating you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Gustav hasn't had a defenceman recreate in forever. I hope he wasn't typecast as that one guy that only cares about stat padding.

STZ reacted to Daniel Janser in Vintage CGY All-Stars vs S80s CGY All-Stars
A little trivia in advance: In Europe All Star Games are much less common than they are in North America.

Switzerland only introduced an All Star Game in 1996 after a tragic accident by Pat Schafhauser, a Minnesota born skater. Schafhauser together with his brother Bill played for my team, the EV Zug, before he moved on to Lugano. During a match for his new team, Pat was at the receiving end of a clean check. Unfortunately, he crashed into the boards and was not able to get up again on his own. He was flown into a special clinic where they diagnosed that he will never be able to skate again as he suffered irreversible damage to his vertebrae and will remain a paraplegic.

To his honour and to help him out financially, the All Star Games were born and some of the proceeds go to a foundation in his name, which helps out people who share Pat's fate.

So much for trivia and I wish it was more cheerful.

To now build a bridge to VHL relevant topics, I decided boringly and very umimaginatively to name my two CGY All Star teams from the past and from the last decade. To avoid any bias I will neither name me nor my brother for such team.

    The Past:

On the Left Wing I already got into a problem. Who to pick? Rybak? The Ukrainian Dynamo is a Calgary lifer and leads the franchise in points and goals, despite Janser's recent efforts to break this records. Or Boulet? The Swiss has the trophy for the best two-way forward named after him and a ship load of trophies to his name. Or Bunclewirth? The Saskatoon native is also a Wranglers lifer but with a shorter VHL career, who not only played for Red-White-and-Black but simultaneously managed them. A very tough choice, but I went for the low hanging fruit and pick Boulet. I think you cannot go wrong with any of them.

On the Center, I nominate Donetsk native Alexander Chershenko. To this day the Ukrainian holds the franchise record for game winners, despite having played two seasons for the Americans.

On the Right Wing, I go with Brett Slobodzian. Also a Saskatoon native and despite a shortened VHL career of five seasons (all for CGY), he is considered one of the greatest to grace the ice. With a whole cabinet full of individual awards, it is no surprise that the trophy for the Most Outstanding Player is named after him.

On the defence, everyone not picking Labatte as one of the two to hold down the fort is a fool in my eyes. Another Saskatoonie, he is second in franchise scoring as a back. An other compulsive trophy hoarder, the award for the best defence man in the league is named in his honour.

Who will support Labatte, though? Sauve, Kendrick and Sullivan are all good options. I finally decided for Alexander Sauvé as the Bernese defender collected most of his silverware during his two stints with Calgary.

Who's on first in net? A valid question as I did my choice based on retired numbers and it appears the only position where there is none is goalkeeper. I go with Red Deer native Norris Stopko. As he played a lot of games for the franchise and had some individual and team success as a member of the Wranglers (and his commute must have been very short).

Now on to the S80s All stars:

On the Left Wing I name Landon Wolanin. A very clutch player, never scoring below ppg with the exception of his rookie season. Twice at the brink on having a three digit season with Calgary, but Janser was just not good enough to convert the one pass missing.

On the Center I name Saku Kotkakoivu. It was a split decision between him and Gonçalves, Saku gets the nod for the best season in the hybrid era where he had almost zero support from a rebuilding Calgary team.

On the Right Wing it is the gritty Scouser Phil The Rock Johnson who provided the Wranglers with some sand paper in their game and valuable secondary scoring. Dude still holds the franchise record for hits.

On the back end I name Phil Strasmore and AirRig GoodBrandSun, as they were a staple in the Wranglers' defence during the eighties.

In net I decided for Oscar Lindbergh who helped Calgary to make the final push in the playoffs. Honourable mentions go out to Klamasteris and Dahl who were solid tendies but could not bring the Albertan team that success the franchise was looking for.

Who would win this encounter? That is indeed difficult two say, as it is almost impossible to compare different eras against each other to start with. Then add the hybrid attributes to the mix and you have a brainfuck par excellence at your hands. I leave that up to your, dear reader's, imagination. I would also be interested on different opinions on my CGY All Star selections.

That is the goal for now, once we get in I think we are a scary matchup for every team. Been quite a busy week for me.
