Admin Victor 11,009 Posted September 28 Admin Share Posted September 28 Game recap 2 (RIP trivia) It was only ever going to end this way. Five times Toronto and Riga had met up in the Continental Cup finals and for the fifth time it was decided by a Game 7. In S9, legendary defenceman Jochen Walser seals his playoff MVP run with an overtime winner to give the Legion their first championship. In S10, rookie Zak Rawlyk returns the favour and Riga's first cup also comes in overtime. By S16, Rawlyk has scored another cup-winning goal for New York in S14 and is playing for Toronto now, but his S14 teammate Jeff McCarthy hits one from the blue-line to give the Reign another Continental Cup. In S51 it's about the goalies – Greg Clegane wins playoff MVP but it's his brother Sandro that gets the Game 7 shutout – Toronto's quest for a fourpeat is ended with 24 seconds left of normal time by Jeff Hamilton who would join the Legion the very next season. And who writes their name into history in S95? Axle Gunner of course, for the Reign's fourth finals win over the Legion and Gunner's second straight championship. Perhaps a Kanou trophy to match Walser is next in line. tcookie 927
GAME RECAP: Toronto vs. Riga The Toronto Legion and Riga Reign faced off in a Championship-deciding 7th game after the Legion rallied back from a 3-1 series deficit. The Reign came out looking determined to make good on their third chance to clinch the Cup. Rin Kagamine broke the ice 5 minutes into the first period and the Reign kept piling the pressure on. An 18-13 first period edge in shots also produced two quick goals from Shubham Anand and Axle Gunner to stretch the lead to 3-0 before Bobby Bob's 6th goal of the playoffs brought Toronto back within 2. Riga dominated the second period in terms of possession, with a 20-8 edge in shots, but allowed Toronto to cut the lead down to 1 before a late goal from Kimi Raikkonen, his 9th of the playoffs, gave them the momentum heading into the final frame. Carson Walker Jr. stretched the lead to 5-2 midway through the third period. That marked the final goal that would be scored in S95, as Riga hung on to claim the Continental Cup. mattyIceman 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/151610-continental-cup-finals-game-7/#findComment-1039911 Share on other sites
jRuutu 2,474
Game 7 between Toronto and Riga promised a tight battle, but instead, we saw a cold fart from Toronto who were not able to match the intensity of Riga. The Latvians were was up 3-0 when only 12 minutes was played. Some comfort for Toronto came from Bob scoring on the powerplay to make it 1-3. Riga continued domination in the second period by shooting 20 times, Toronto fired only 9 shots, but still, Toronto was the happier side by scoring 1 goal and allowing only 1. The score was 4-2 after two periods. Toronto did their best to try and force their way into the game, but a goal scored by Walker Jr appeared to break Toronto's spirit completely, Toronto managed to shoot only 5 times in the third. Riga won the game 5-2, Riga celebrates the championship! mattyIceman 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/151610-continental-cup-finals-game-7/#findComment-1039922 Share on other sites
