For this week's edition of "A Brief Look Back", I'm going to be looking at a player who is one of the best wingers that the VHL has ever known. This player was a third overall selection of the New York Americans, soon to be 10 seasons ago, and his name is Xin Xie Xiao. Going by the coined nickname 'XXX', Xiao seemed always destined for greatness. Coming out of the VHLM, he was S35's top two-way forward and playoff MVP, so the league knew what he was capable of even in the early stages of his career. In his rookie season with the Americans, he scored 29 goals and added 43 assists, to give him 72 points on that outing, which was already a point-per-game. 72 points is the least amount he ever scored in his career in a season, so with me stating that, you know he was a great player. He also had 366 hits in that rookie campaign, so he was a big physical presence as well. In his sophomore season, he upped his production to 42 goals and 40 assists, earning 10 more points than his rookie season with 82 this time around, so there was no sophomore slump for this stud. In his next season in S38, XXX had 43 goals and 55 assists for 98 points. He still possessed a physical game as well with 251 hits that season. That season, New York was outed in the Semi-Finals by the Toronto Legion where XXX had 6 points in 6 games.

It was not until Season 39 that XXX and the Americans made a bigger name for themselves. In S39, New York won the Victory Cup for having the best regular season record, and in that season, Xin Xie Xiao scored 42 goals and 41 assists, hitting a bit of a decline, at least in his standards, with 83 points. XXX eclipsed the 300-hit mark for the second time in his career that season with 354 hits as well. In the playoffs that season, Xin Xie Xiao won the Continental Cup for the first time in his career, where New York took out the Davos Dynamo in 5 games, and XXX had 8 points in New York's 10 playoff games. Coming off of that playoff victory in Season 39, XXX came out with a brilliant performance in S40, hitting the 100-point milestone for the first time. He had 50 goals, which was a first as well, and 56 assists for 106 points that season. On top of that, he blocked 53 shots and delivered 360 hits to boot. XXX won the Scott Boulet Trophy for being the VHL's Top Two-Way Forward. That season, although the Americans once again made the Finals, this time they were beaten out in 5 games by the Riga Reign.

Moving on to S41, people knew the New York Americans were one of, if not the best in the VHL, so hopes were high. In this season, XXX followed up with another 100-point season, with 53 goals and 55 assists, for 108 points. 53 goals was XXX's most ever, and he carried that momentum into the post-season where he scored 8 goals and 3 assists for 11 points in 12 games. With that outstanding effort, Xin Xie Xiao and the Americans once again won the Continental Cup. Finalists three seasons in a row; quite the accomplishment. In Season 42, many people thought the Americans would start to fall off the radar after having been so competitive for multiple seasons. XXX scored 51 goals and added 62 assists, for 113 points, which was a new milestone for him. In the playoffs that season, New York was taken out in 7 games by the Quebec City Meute in the Semi-Finals. Xiao managed to put up 11 points in 12 post-season games, but it just was not enough to get them any further to what they wanted.

In Season 43, XXX played his final season, although for the first time in his career it was not with the New York Americans, but rather the Cologne Express. In what may or may not have been a surprise to some, that season was his most productive one. XXX managed to post 50 goals, and add 74 assists, which gave him 124 points on the season. Once again in the post-season, Xin Xie Xiao was a Finalist in the VHL Playoffs. The Cologne Express faced off against the underdog Seattle Bears, but it was the Bears who won the Continental Cup that season, capping off XXX's career with two cups.
