Playoff Prognostications
 
Yet another great season of VHL play is complete and yet again one of my players has been part of a Victory Cup winning squad. That makes two Victory Cups in three seasons for Tom Slaughter and the New York Americans. This spot will not be about my player who will be soon to unleash havoc on all of you (just look at that piss poor forward depth league wide next season!). No, this spot will be about the playoffs and making Davos butthurt again like my last media spot.
 
North America:
 

 
In North America the three playoff teams are New York, Seattle and Calgary. The Bears secured home ice advantage against the Wranglers after finishing the season with 38 wins and 87 points compared to Calgary’s 37 wins and 75 points. Clearly in this series we have the tale of two teams. One team, woefully inactive is on the downswing of their competitive seasons in Seattle and the other team being Calgary is starting to once again take shape with some good young talent. Seattle is the better team on paper because Calgary literally has no star power to speak of at the moment. The Bears went 5-3 over the Wranglers during the regular season and I see the better Bears taking the Wranglers out in 5 games. Unfortunately, I don’t expect this to be much of a series.
 
Europe:
 
This conference has been the most exciting one to watch over the course of the season. The Reign and Iron Eagles bulked up during the trade deadline both expecting to make it to the finals. I’ve got bad news for one of you guys (well both of you guys), it’s going to be incredibly tough to make it to the finals and once you get to the finals you’ll be facing a New York team that played you extremely tough this season. That is if you can get past the ever strong Dynamo (and riggery). The Iron Eagles secured home ice advantage over the Reign with a 48 win campaign and 101 points. I think the home ice advantage will be the deciding factor in this series as the Eagles go on to triumph over the Reign in 7 games. If the season series is any indication of how close these two teams are (4-4 each, three goal differential in favour of the Eagles) then you should expect a real dog fight in this one.
 
Conference Finals:
 
Davos has secured home ice advantage against Vasteras for this series and I expect them to take some advantage of this, but in the end I don’t think it will be enough to trump the stronger Iron Eagles who went an impressive 9-1 over their last ten games. In the six games against both Riga and Vasteras since the trade deadline the Dynamo went an excellent 0-6, getting wiped out in a few of those games. As I’ve stated before, I expect the Dynamo to bow out in this round of the playoffs in 6 games. The Eagles and the Reign both made moves to improve their teams while the Dynamo didn’t. Certainly the back end implosion of Davos’ schedule must not be instilling as much confidence nowadays?
 

 
The Americans will face off against the Bears with home ice advantage in their favour. This season I don’t expect Smyl to play quite as well as Lebeau did last season and for that reason I think this series will be over fairly quickly. As evidenced during the regular season, the Bears are no match for the more powerful Americans after they went 2-6 against them during the regular season (-6 goal differential). Meanwhile, the Americans have improved their team while the inactive Bears have sat around all season. I expect the Americans to make short work of the Bears in 5 or 6 games.
