It’s been a minute since we last talked, journal. But there’s been a lot happening in my life. I feel happy and at peace- and I’ve been able to be a much more active member of the Boat Gang. 
 
I want to use this opportunity to thank Glowy and Rory for drafting me. I’ve said this before, but one of my biggest regrets is not waiting to create after the draft was over- I had, like, zero time to earn for my class and thus my stock tanked. I believe that I would’ve gone much earlier in the draft had I waited to create and just joined a team in free agency. But alas. Basically, thank you Glowy and Rory for taking a chance on me- I was pretty unproven in VHL when I joined and you guys helped motivate me and make me a max earner. I’m happy to be a member of the Boat Gang, and as long as I’m here, I won’t let y’all down.

To start FrostBeard’s Chronicles I should explain what these series are about. In these biweekly articles, I will discuss my experience in the league and touch upon questions relating to forums, GMing, and my player careers. It will not be necessarily bad things or things I didn’t like, it will feature things that still hold meaning to me and have shaped my path in the VHL. 
 
To start this series off, I will be touching upon an important question I have asked myself: What was the first blunder that any of John Frostbeard’s GMs had made? There aren’t many, but there are a few that made me realize how GMing sometimes can make players annoyed. 
 
 
“Worst decision made by GM Blade” 

I already know that this article might ruffle up some feathers but I think that I am entitled to speak my mind. Firstly, I am most thankful to BladeMaiden for being my 1st GM, she helped me take up courage, become a GM, build a successful career and get drafted higher than anyone would have predicted. I loved the way Press conferences were organized by Blade, how questions were asked in a fun format that anyone, even people who have never heard about hockey, could answer then easily. I truly embraced the culture of involvement that we saw in Philadelphia Reapers at the time.
 
When it comes to my time in Philly, I was there in S65 and S66. S65 was my first season, I joined in not long after the start of the season, got updates in and pushed myself to quickly become a player that any team could depend on. To gain some assets considering that I was just a waiver pickup, I got traded to a contending team (Reapers did not do great in S65 and finished the season with 1st Overall pick in S66 Draft). Yukon Rush, at that time, lead by GM Josh, needed some extra on-ice power to help another fellow S66 prospect, Hunter Hearst Helmsley to win a cup. After the end of the S65 and sadly, an undesirable result by Yukon, John Frostbeard entered S66 VHL and VHLM Draft. I did promise to GM Blade that I will stay under 200 TPE Cap (that was at the time the limit for a player to stay in VHLM).
 

 
It felt like the off-season just dragged on and on, I was so excited to see where I will end up as both VHLM and VHL Drafts were important to me, I had told 2 GMs at the time that I would like to be drafted by them. One was the infamous GM of Calgary Wranglers Bushito, the other was GM of Vancouver Wolves Beaviss. I asked exactly those 2 GMs because the Philly team was extremely loyal to their GM, at the time I had only experienced Philly and a bit of Yukon. I relied on GM Blade to tell me which teams are the ones that I want to play for. I thought I was super lucky to get drafted 12 Overall by Calgary Wranglers. I felt honoured as I already shared a Discord LR with Bushito as his player was on Philly Reapers. That changed quite a lot in S67 but we will get to that. 
 
We on the team were told how terrible and dictatorial was commissioner Bana, how bad were people on Houston Bulls, at that time lead by GM Sonnet. (A bit funny that a Philly player, who was taught to hate on Bulls because GM Blade had issues with Sonnet, became GM of Houston), was told that Peace was a douchebag and a bad person. I do hate to say that all these things happened to be false and most of the Philly squad was lied to, manipulated. That said, all those things I completely forgive Blade, I understand that it was her narrative to push the team forward by making Philly a place that felt almost cut from the rest of the VHL community. She tried to make her players become her bodyguards. 
 
So, finally, we are coming to what I truly consider the biggest blunder that GM Blade had ever done. Note that I stayed down for a season, wasted the first season of my VHL career just because I promised to be there for the Reapers when the team will be competitive. S66 was the season when our team was joined by so many amazing players, from the great Condor Adrienne to Matt Tocco and Ben Hafkey. Another management piece was added to Philadelphia Reapers. GM BladeMaiden was joined by her friend Jubo who became the team’s AGM. The focus of the team shifted, people who disagreed with Blade got traded and crossed out from Reapers history (Note the trade of Rhys Chism, Jables, who was my AGM of Houston at the time - his name still is crossed out in Philly LR History chat because he somehow was a traitor). 
 

 
My player dominated VHLM throughout the first 45/50 games, at the time I was 2nd in points in the league, was close to the top 2 by goals and was surely looking to see an award-winning season for John Frostbeard if I kept going on that path. And then it happened, the management group decided to please another player, Kyle Sabertooth who was a controversial player considering his antics and had childish behaviour on forums at the time. Lines were changed and my production fell off and off to the point when John Frostbeard was not even Top 10 in scoring when I asked why are lines being changed if things were going great, I got silenced and said that it was the best decision for the team. I have a simple theory, at the time I was 2nd in the league, Blade’s and Jubo’s sympathiser uphillmoss (Kyle Sabertooth) was doing quite a lot worse, he was struggling and was about 10 points behind my production. Suddenly, when it was apparent that we are going to make playoffs as a team, lines are getting changed and his player just become the main guy in everything, my playing time gets lowered and all those minutes go to him. At the time I felt humiliated, I stayed down for a season, I stayed because I was a man of my word. Why would have I stayed down if I knew that I was needed there only to boost others and then when I was not needed, pushed away? At the end of the S66, I had still not received a proper answer from the management squad, Kyle Sabertooth, a FA signing went to be the leading scorer on Philly that season and even though we won the Founder’s cup, I felt betrayed, I felt like my dedication was thrown to the group because a friend wanted a bigger role on the team. 
 
At the time I agreed that I will not take this up and discuss it with anyone as I had just become a GM of Houston and I felt that my role required me to keep quiet about these issues, I felt like Philly had become a place where a difference of opinion was shut down by a mob of people that didn’t care if they are fighting for the right or the wrong, they just mindlessly fought for whatever BladeMaiden and Jubo wanted them to fight for. 
 
To summarize, the biggest blunder GM Blade made was signing a well-known troublemaker in FA and the addition of Jubo to the management group. Those 2 things transformed a team that was filled with a burst of rivalry into a mindless group of punks. 
 

Masami had this teammate. Baldur. He was a very interesting person she thought. He came from a place called Faroe and she had never heard of this place in her life. She was fascinated to learn more about his culture mostly because he displayed it so prominently. Before the games he got really excited and started playing Faroese music and chanting along really loud! At first it was a bit intimidating but then Masami found herself really intrigued by this music, and mostly by the passion with which Baldur expressed his feelings by chanting along. She found she really enjoyed listening to him booming his voice in the locker room before games now. She didn’t know what she was going to do exactly, but she was sure she wanted to have people in the locker room feel her passion the same way everyone felt Baldur’s. She was just so desperate to convey her raw emotions and express herself.  
 
After playing their last game and winning, though Masami didn’t feel like she played her best, she sat down in the locker room with her guitar. She began to play, lightly strumming at first, and then began to really get into it. The locker room hadn’t heard her play before, she’d always done it in private or out in front of the rink, never for the team. As she began to feel the music she closed her eyes and let her fingers dance across the strings. She sang a song in her native Japanese, and she could feel her raw emotion inside her in a way that she never felt it when she wasn’t singing. She didn’t realize but the entire team had stopped what they were doing in the locker room and listened to this girl from a far away land sing her heart out. No one on the team spoke Japanese besides Masami, so no one understood the lyrics, but there was no doubt that her song had reached them as she finished the last note on her favorite love song and opened her eyes to see that so many of her teammates were looking at her with wonder in their eyes.  At first, with everyone staring at her quietly, she didn’t know if maybe she had offended them or made them upset by suddenly singing. She realized too that as she had gotten lost in her music she had been singing really loudly. She began to panic, thinking that she should bow and apologize profusely for her rudeness.
 
Just as she shot up and was about to bow Baldur began to laugh. Soon he was roaring in laughter and wiping tears from his eyes. Masami had no idea why he was laughing, she wondered briefly if he might have been making fun of her. She began to feel like her music had been rejected and felt a crushing weight in her heart. If her music was rejected…she didn’t know how to handle that. People often ignored her music, but no one had ever reacted like this before. No one had made fun of her music or rejected it like this. Masami began to feel like she was going to cry. She looked at Baldur and asked him why he laughed at her. His response was to rush over to her, she braced herself for it just in time as it was a shock, and he hugged her. He gave her the biggest, most enveloping hug that she’d ever had. While he was hugging her he said to her that he was just moved by her music and didn’t know how to express it other than to laugh in enjoyment. He said he meant no offense and thought she was an amazing singer and could play the guitar beautifully.  Masami began to cry a bit, she didn’t know why exactly, something about this really was affecting her more than she felt was reasonable, but she just felt so…accepted and that was something she didn’t really have much in her life. As Baldur hugged her he spoke out to the rest of the team and told them that he thought Masami was a wonderful musician and that she should play after every game, and if anyone had a problem with that they’d have to answer to him.
 
Masami did not know what to do with herself. Here was this person, from a culture she’d never heard of, from a different part of the world, complimenting her music. He was even defending her right to play in the locker room. When Baldur finally released his hug she kept looking down at the ground. She realized she was also profoundly embarrassed by his display. She was very, very happy, but also very, very, embarrassed. He put his hands on her shoulders and told her to look at him. When she did manage to look up he looked her right in the eyes and said, “Keep your head high girl, you are amazing and you should know it! Declare it to all the world proudly and I will be there to make sure that they know it is true!”
 
These words were very confusing to Masami but she was very happy nonetheless. Someone had accepted her music, even seemed to thoroughly enjoy it! She felt wonderful that evening, though every time she thought of Baldur hugging her she would find herself looking down and blushing. It wasn’t like she had never been hugged before, but not usually in public, by a person she didn’t know that well. It was a very strange experience for sure. That night she dreamed of being in the locker room playing her music, and everyone feeling it, but then her parents were there. With their faces full of disapproval, obviously barely tolerating her existence, they stared. She woke up in a start, and couldn’t stop her heart beating so fast that it felt like it would burst right through her chest. Eventually she managed to calm down by strumming her guitar and humming. This was her private ritual that she did when she needed to be comforted. Just her, her guitar, and the sound of her voice. That was all she needed for now. That was all she could expect for the future.

1. We just had the VHLM draft, seeing our roster restocked with faces, some new, some returning. How do you feel about our draft results?
2. Building off of this, how do you feel about our chances next season?

Coming into the S77 VHL Draft, Prague only had one single pick, 43rd overall in the 3rd round, so it was always going to get a bit interesting in terms of who we could manage to get and who we couldn't. It was perhaps a bit ironic that this draft in particular was the one we barely had any picks in, given that there were so many Prague alumni with their recreates in it. That Dude @Cornholio, Druss Deathwalker @animal74, Brussels Sprout @Liberty_Cabbage, and Gary Tarantino @Garrett, were all guys who we greatly enjoyed having on the team and would have definitely preferred to bring back, had circumstances gone in a direction as to allow it, but ultimately I'm still happy with the trade that netted us Grekkark Gyrfalcon @Sharkstrong even if it took away the opportunities on bringing back some of these guys. It was pretty interesting though seeing the mid first round to the early second full of members of the Phamily, and I hope these guys all enjoy their new locations. Honestly, given the way a few of them fell, I'd thrown the idea around in our strategy area of potentially trading into the draft to pick one up, but never ended up pulling the trigger - mostly because work was particularly busy and I couldn't guarantee being able to take the time away to fully negotiate a deal with anyone, but still. All of these guys are 100% welcome in Prague at any time and they know that. That's simply the way the Phamily works - for that matter, Animal is still doing the team awards, despite no longer being on the team, and it's probably one of my favorite little personal touches that Prague offers despite being done by a now former member.

A few hours before draft night, I took a look through all the VHLM Discords (the perks of being one of the guys running the thing after all) to see what I could find in terms of activity from the type of players who were likely to be around at 43. At first, I did have one specific target, Baldur Poulsen @GlowyGoat who at that stage would have been more of a locker room presence type of player than one that would necessarily be a huge help for us on the ice. Still, Glowy is a great person to have around, and so I wanted to try to make that happen. Unfortunately, I'd gotten word from my AGM Dominic Gobeil @Domg5 that he speculated Malmo at 40 might be looking that way, and my source ended up being correct on that front.
 
I found a few players just down the draft list that I'd also seen in their respective discords, and added Raphael Sonier @raphaelsonier9815 and Raihan Heavems @RstortonYT in particular to my list (and had I not gone with the guy I did, these two were the next targets) but there was one message in particular that intrigued me. "Appreciate the heads up, but sticking to the basics is just temporary until I'm not stressed with school and also learn the league in more detail. I would definitely do more in the future!" This was found in the Houston discord, and it came from a guy that perhaps on paper would have been maybe half a round later, Nicholas Mariani @Mistxh J. A guy who is active already, but who plans to increase that as time goes on, and just needs to learn the league? I was immediately sold. After all, where better for a member to learn the league than on the team with both VHLM commissioners? I'm confident Mariani will significantly outperform his 43rd overall selection. In fact, while he was somewhere in the early to mid 50s TPE-wise on draft night, just over the last few days he's climbed to 47th.
 
Shortly thereafter, it was time to turn our attention to free agency. We had Jungkok @tfong that was set to test the market, although we were considered to have a fair chance of retaining him as a fairly contending team. Ultimately, it did not work out that way, and while it's unfortunate to see him go, it's hard for a guy looking to compete for cups to turn down an offer from the team that most recently won it, which is where Jungkok ended up. This left us with 7 million in cap and the rest of the market to play with. Obviously, an attempt was made to go after Venus Thightrap @BladeMaiden as well - similarly to the people mentioned in the first paragraph, Blade and any of her players will always be welcome in Prague. This time, it wasn't to be - my work schedule for the Saturday in which FA opened got changed to 7 PM-3 AM, so I didn't wake up until 6 PM, by which time she'd already signed with Helsinki (I'd talked briefly with her the day before though, when FA talks were open but signings were not). This narrowed our focus onto two players, Xavier LeFlamant @BarzalGoat and Brian Strong Jr @Wheaties.
 
Both guys I added to the discord, let them talk with the team for a bit, created a role for FA with basically the same perms as the Players role, and let the guys get down to the business of swaying them to our side. The plan was to offer on both players, and if we got one, to then put in an inactive claim on Hugh Jass which combined would take up most of our cap space. While it seemed stressful at the time, and I could never be 100% sure of where either guy would go until they signed, I'm ultimately not sure how close it was in the end for either guy. Barzy took to our discord like he was meant to be there the whole time, immediately meshing with the guys as though he was a long lost member of the Phamily. Given we could match the few things he had a preference for, he agreed to sign fairly early for us, which solidified the plans a bit and most importantly, it removed the possibility of a complete strikeout. Given we'd lost Jungkok, getting LeFlamant was a major relief in my mind.
 
Then the focus turned to Strong. He'd already been talking with us a little during the talking period, but went out the first night FA was open and wasn't around quite as much as Barzy initially. Still, Wheaties is a guy I go back some way with, having been on his Miami Neptune in EFL for a while with one of my old players (not my shiny new auto 12s, but a guy I had to do work for and ultimately didn't most of the time) plus was just generally aware of him anyway and got along well. There's also a few other guys on the team (the aforementioned Shark, as well as @Doomsday) that know Wheaties and could make it a place of familiarity. At this point, FA largely became a series of if-then statements: IF Strong : THEN Done - IF Not Strong : THEN IA claim on Jass. It never came down to that though, as Strong also signed on with us and while admittedly landing both does fill up the forwards a bit, it still makes us a much stronger team than we were, which is saying a lot because we were already in a pretty good spot. Definitely happy to bring Wheaties on board and the even nicer part is he's still a pretty young player as a season 74 draftee, so potentially he fits in well with the whole extended window, both pre and post the Landry timeline.
 
This whole thing turns our arguably weakest area from last season, centers, into a position of strength. We now have four players with a developed FO attribute as both FAs have done so (Strong may want to bump his up a little, as he's at 70 compared to Bouchard's 75, LeFlamant's 77, and Landry's 85) and can actually move people about the lines a bit more freely and look for matchups rather than having the center availability largely dictate things for us. Also, and this appears to be somewhat of a footnote because it didn't require any separate transactional work over the last few days, but it's certainly much more important than just the brief mention at the end: we are set to see the debut of hard working winger Braxton Hunter @dshervill. He's given everything he's had to the Saskatoon Wild program in the VHLM, and it's time for him to take a step up the pipeline and crack the opening day roster. He deserves every bit of this chance and will surely be a key part of the Phantoms going forward. It's especially impressive that a guy who was in somewhat of the dregs of his draft, at 72 overall, has kept such consistent work over the seasons and now finds himself on the Phantoms roster proper.

Mexico City, because of Rory’s prior connections to the team before he took over Halifax, but that’s more of a friendly rivalry I think.

Nissan Qashqai, pretty popular in the Faroe Islands since it can handle the winter weather but is compact enough to make it through the narrow roads. Too used to it to change after moving to Halifax.

Willing to step up as a leader but also happy to let others take that role, can do either of them.

For this week i went onto making a new vtuber for the Halifax 21sts!

Vyse is a person who loves sailing! He has always wanted to go out sailing but thing is he's also very scared of water!

Brynhildr, is a fallen Valkyrie that has come back to show the world whos boss.
She's a solo warrior and is representing Helsinki in E-sports.
 

I have decided to assign some teams this time with Vtubers. This can be anyone from hololive or any other orginisation.
 
There maybe no reasoning to my decisions however, i will try to give a reason behind them.
 
First fo all lets start with my own team the Helsinki Titans.
 
We'll be Amane Kanata from the Hololive corpration.
 

 
I think this fits due to the colours and she fits due to having @BladeMaiden as our AGM who is also known as Katana Lady elsewhere. I don't watch this one so much so i am not sure what they're like for personality however i think that the colours do match Finland as a nation too.
 

Next we move onto the Riga Reign. I have decided that this one is very close to Shishiro Botan which is a lion i am not sure if that Riga is supposed to be a lion or tiger so i thought this would fit.
 

 
This is a character i've seen some things of and think they're fun.
 
Next we're onto the Warsaw Predators. Once again i am not sure what animal this is so i've decided to make them everyone's favourite doggo Inugami Korone.
 

 
Something to remember is that Predator is Human, Human is Predator, Human Is Doggo, Doggo is Human, Doggo is Korone.
 
London United is one that is going to be more stereotypical. I have decided they'd be a detective like Watson Amelia or should i go with someone who looks regal like Hoshimachi Suisei.
 

 
I think that Watson Amelia has to be the winner here due to the ties to Sherlock Holms but i think that Suisei would also be a good choice so i'll include a image of them too so please vote below if i made a bad decision. (Are ya' winnin' Watson?)
 
Now, we're getting to Prague Phantoms. This one i had a few options bit i decided to go with the king of the Phantoms a Reaper! So they're going to be Mori Calliope!
 


This was based on the idea of what the vtuber is supposed to be. Unless there's something i don't know about @diamond_ace ... maybe they're the reaper themself!
 
Now the one find the easiest to do is Malmo Nighthawks. The team i'd chose is the Duck herself Oozora Subaru.
 

 
She's a bird like the nighthawk but and i need to use Kiara later and as a result this is the best to go! However, i do love Subaru and she's my 4th favourite Vtuber! So maybe Malmo is my 4th favourite team? Who knows..
 
Now, we're getting to HC Davos Dynamo... this one is hard to chose but this will be the first Male Vtuber on the list and might be the last and that is Kanade Izuru.
 

 
I think i only chose this one due to the fact they're a similar colour another one i haven't watched so don't know the personality.
 
Finally for this confrence Moscow Menace... I have had a hard time thinking of someone for this then i found someone who was perfect.. Shirogane Noel.
 

 
The reason i decided to chose this one was due to them matching the colours but also she is clearly a muscle character! She would beat you up and make sure you're not getting back up. Her design reminds me a lot of 2B from Nier Automata.

Riley Couture was worried this week when she went into the Halifax locker room and noticed that her assistant assistant general manager, Rick Osman, was missing. She got scared and tried to work out what had happened. It turned out that the assistant assistant general manager role was not being respected, by the new ownership, as he was criticised for creating too many roles. Riley felt a little guilty as she had also created a lot of roles on the server, even if that responsibility was mostly left up to Rick. As a result of the criticism, Rick felt the need to step down. However, Riley couldn't handle doing the responsibilities of an assistant assistant general manager on top of her own assistant general manager responsibilities. Therefore she went to talk to Rick and tried to re-hire him for the position. Here is how the conversation went.
 
Riley: I am struggling without an assistant assistant gm
Rick: oh no i can be aagm
 
And then he re-took up the role. He is now the AAGM of the Halifax 21st locker Room again. Thank goodness, now Riley can relax and focus more on training.
