Well the time has come to a point where I could no longer stay in the shadows and pretend I was normal. It is hard to admit when you path is not what you feel deep down inside. I made a brave move and paid $3,000,000 to have the change over. I am now living a life that I truly felt was my real purpose, a forward instead of a defenseman. I know the change is not going to be easy, but it is what I felt needed to be done.

Oh what a mental relief it has been. I was a forward trapped in a defenseman's body for too long. Now I need to adapt to my new role. What do I wear? Do I act the same around my team mates? Will they point and laugh? I hope it isn't as stressful as some others have told me it would be.

So going forward, I will be holding my stick high and firm. I will skate like the wind with this burden off my back. Now that everyone knows, it is just that much better. Being something you are not just to please others is not a way to live. I look “forward”, pun intended, to the season and see if my new wings can fly.

I would like to thank my GM for his personal support, he has been great and is considering a lifestyle change himself, from what I have been told. So thank you Bana, you are the best.

This is a very valid point actually, this was probably one of the busiest drafts for actual trades on the day and Bash and I were doing bits.

So in terms of current VHL players I traded Valentino for Bernard, Clarke, Telker, Foilen, Petrovic, and Lagesson. Not a bad haul if you ask me. ☺️

    1. If you had to play for any other team in the league, who would you play for?
D.C. or Bust! I do have some former Hali teammates on NYA that I enjoyed playing with but D.C.'s where my hearts at.
    2. What is one change you would make in the league if you had the power to do it?
I kind of wish that the 'Unofficial' awards were legit awards that could be tracked, adds some cool stats that really cool/funny to follow
    3. Do you listen to any podcasts on the site? If so, which one(s)?
I listened to one, VHL Australia, interviewing our GM and giving some solid insight on where the Club and League is going and what may happen in the future.
    4. The draft lottery is finished. Will Riga take Roque Davis or Kyl Oferson 1st overall?
I'm thinking Riga may need some more support in the O-zone so my guess is Oferson
    5. We hold the 7th overall pick, but rumours abound that we may be trading it. Are we trading up, trading down, or trading it for a player?
Nothing can stop us, we're all the way upppppp... either that and pick a goalie or trade for one is my guess
    6. Moscow and Calgary are facing off in the finals. Moscow is heavily favored, but would Calgary winning make our 4-2 series against them feel a little better?
I think the fact that we made it that competitive for them in our series and seeing the same results for them against Moscow is very impressive. I think we'll fair much better next season!

As everyone knows by this point, every time I try something new I come in asking for advice. This is my third graphic using photoshop (not counting the times it crashed on me) and I'm getting better, I promise. Did my best to do some manual shading/color correction on the render using an overlay layer and dodge/burn tools and did my usual "take a solid color and draw random lines on it" for the background. I know everything about the text sucks and that will probably be my next big area of concentration.

    Playoff Previews: Continental Cup Finals
    Moscow Menace vs. Calgary Wranglers

It's been a long season, but the table has finally been set for the Continental Cup Finals. The two-time defending champions, the Seattle Bears, have finally been dethroned, and the VHL will be crowning a new champion this season. The Calgary Wranglers, who thanked the Bears for dispatching the top-seeded Vancouver Wolves by ending their two-year reign atop the league in a six-game series. However, Tyler Barabash's squad will face their toughest challenge of the season, as Victor Alfredsson's Moscow Menace continued their savage assault on the European Conference by putting an end to Ryan Kastelic and the Riga Reign in five games, just like a certain handsome VSN writer predicted. The ultimate prize is on the line, who will prevail?

    Road To the Cup

For the Moscow Menace, their road to the Continental Cup continued just as it has all season long: brutal efficiency that would make Mother Russia proud. Randoms, the final Season 63 player left in the VHL, and Jet Jaguar continued their post-season dominance, as their 14 points were tied for the league lead in post-season points. Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen's dominant season continues, as his 12 points and +9 have provided instrumental to keeping the Menace's dangerous offence rolling, along with keeping the puck out of their own net. Dean Clarke's ten assists, along with ten from Werbenjagermanjensen, have established Moscow's elite ability to cycle the puck and make quick work of opposing defences. Despite the best efforts of Riga and Ryan Kastelic, they were sent home courtesy of Jet Jaguar's series-clinching goal, naturally assisted by Werbenjagermanjensen and Mat Rocco. They now go to the Continental Cup Finals with their biggest question being how many games will it take to hoist the Cup?

Calgary, however, is no pushover. After a tough series against the D.C. Dragons that went to six games in the first round, the Wranglers got the unenviable task of taking on the two-time defending champions in the Seattle Bears. Despite their higher seed, many predicted that the Wranglers' season would end here. What ended instead, however, was Seattle's reign as league champions. Calgary's defence, starring Tyler Barabash Jr. and Charlie Paddywagon, held the Bears to just one goal in first two games of the series as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 series lead. Seattle narrowed the gap to 3-2 over the next two games, with poor discipline from several players drawing the ire of General Manager Tyler Barabash in the form of a profanity-laced tirade following the 4-2 Game Five loss. After Scott Greene scored an early goal for Seattle in Game Six, it looked as if the Wranglers were destined to become the latest victims of the 3-1 curse. However, goals from Ondrei Ohradka, Tyler Barabash Jr. and Sigard Gunnar suddenly put the Bears down 3-1 by the end of the first period, and they never recovered. Now the Wranglers advance to face their defence’s ultimate test: Moscow.

    Why Moscow Should Win

Calgary's defence is getting a lot of hype, which makes it easy to sleep on Moscow's defence. While their defensive core isn't as deep as that of the Wranglers', when you can boast having either Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen or Vladimir Pavlov on the ice at all times, you ensure that Tyler Barabash Jr, the only forward on Calgary's roster in the top ten for playoff points, receives coverage from an elite defender every time he steps onto the ice. Shutting down Barabash Jr. would lead to a considerable amount of pressure on netminder JB Rift to keep up his current play, which has benefitted greatly from Calgary's elite defensive play. In a duel of the netminders, I trust Raymond Bernard to keep Calgary's weaker forward core off the board than I do Rift keeping Jet Jaguar, Randoms, Gritty and company out of the net. Their deep group of forwards will be the toughest test yet for Calgary.

    Why Calgary Should Win

Defence wins championships, and boy do the Wranglers have the defensemen capable of living up to that moniker. Rookie defenseman Edwin THE Encarnacion, the first overall pick of the S70 VHL Entry Draft, has 544 TPE, and that's the lowest amount of this defensive group. Charlie Paddywagon, Brady Stropko Jr, Jordan Tonn and Cody Smith round out this group, which has proven to be the heart of this Wranglers team. They'll need to be better than ever to halt the likes of Jet Jaguar and Randoms, along with the depth of the Menace's strong group of forwards. However, Moscow's defensemen are not as deep a core as Calgary's, and despite the fact that their forwards are weaker, they could match up well here. Kris Rice and Mikko Lahtinen could be difference-makers towards a Cup win, and frankly, Calgary needs them to be. JB Rift has been a monster in net, and that must continue as well as, despite the help he has in front of him, his job is about to get much tougher.

    VSN's Pick

The ultimate fire vs. ice series, the league's best offence in the Moscow Menace takes on the top defence in the Calgary Wranglers. With all the momentum in the world riding with the Moscow Menace, can they be stopped? Currently, I can best describe the Calgary Wranglers' defensive core as a dam, holding up a river that continues to swell. They are supporting an offence that hinges on one forward, a goalie that is quite frankly outkicking his coverage so to speak, and now must keep the deadliest offence yet off the board. My friends, that dam is about to break. Moscow's offence will prove to be the task that Calgary's overburdened defensive core ultimately struggles with, although I still expect this to be a tough series that either team could win. Ultimately, I believe the Moscow Menace will conclude their dominant season with the ultimate prize, the Continental Cup, winning the series in six games.

    1. We're still alive! Do we complete the comeback against the Wranglers in games 6 and 7?
I'm praying and hoping that we can pull a pseudo comeback-sweep! I think we have all the pieces for it, we just need to get our special teams going and capitalize on those PP's.
    2. What has been the biggest surprise of this season for you?
Honestly, it's our regular season standing. After the start of the season, I'm pleasantly surprised that we rallied and got ourselves in a solid standing!
    3. Three of the top four picks in this year's draft will belong to teams with 80 points or more. What do you blame this on; bad GMing, bad rules, bad luck, or some mixture thereof?
Honestly, it's a shame that the lottery can even make an outcome like this when it really doesn't help the teams that really need it. I'm thinking it's a mixture of bad rules and bad luck.
    4. Vancouver just went out to Seattle round 1. Will Seattle threepeat?
I'm hoping not cause I want it to be us! However all great dynasties aren't dynasties without a threepeat.
    5. Obviously, we'll need a goalie within the next couple seasons. Vancouver is rumoured to be shopping Spyro around and Wolski is available in the draft. Would you try to grab one of those two or try something else?
I think we should see how well our draft picks are before thinking of grabbing a veteran goalie. Both are great players that could definitely help us between the pipes.
    6. Now that we're in playoffs, this question is quite a bit more relevant than before; team success or personal success, which is more important to you?
For me, I would say team success because my perspective of team success involves everyone clicking together and contributing the best they can in their own personal way. I think if player bought into the team's system, the personal success will come itself.

The season 68 VHL entry draft is chock-full of high end defensive talent that is finally coming into its prime and having a real impact on the league. Players like Condor Adrienne, Lance Flowers and Luciano Valentino & Jeff Downey head up a very strong class of defenders that not only hope to help their teams raise the Continental Cup in the future but also hope to get elected to the prestigious VHL Hall of Fame once their careers are over. Let us take a look at this strong crop of defenders to see where they stack up against each other thus far in their careers and find out if any of these guys stand a chance at cracking the Hall.

    Name: Condor Adrienne @OrbitingDeath
    Team: Malmo Nighthawks
    Goals: 38 (1st)
    Assists: 115 (2nd)
    Points: 153 (1st)
    Plus/Minus: +39 (1st)
    Hits: 634 (2nd)
    Shots Blocked: 350 (3rd)

Condor Adrienne was the first player drafted in this class and is also aptly the first player on our list. Adrienne was brought in to be the future franchise defenseman of the Malmo Nighthawks when he was chosen, and while he hasn’t taken over that number one defenseman spot as of yet, it shouldn’t be much longer before he does. Adrienne has put up some great numbers already in his career, and has been trusted with a lot of minutes in Malmo right from the start. After a down sophomore season with forty points, Green set a new career mark this season with 57 points and an impressive 17 goals. Adrienne will more than likely finally get his shot at being the true number one defender with Malmo next season as Jerry Garcia continues to get older and that extra ice-time could really help Green catapult himself to another level. As long as Green can continue to build upon his strong third season and improve his offensive number there is a good argument that can be made that would see Green entering the Hall of Fame.

Luciano Valentino was the first draft pick in D.C. Dragons history and was brought in to be their franchise defenseman right from the start of the team. A quiet player off of the ice, Valentino allows his play on the ice to do all of the talking for him. Valentino had a very strong rookie season in the first year of the Dragons where he managed to put up a very impressive 48 points and some spectacular defensive statistics that had him near the top of league leaderboards in multiple categories. Since that rookie year he has kept consistent with his offensive output, putting up 46 points in his second season and 53 in his third year. While his defensive stats have taken a bit of a drop off since that first season that can mostly be attributed to the increasing talent level in D.C. and less of a need for him to be putting his body on the line as much as he had to at the start. Valentino has had a very strong three seasons to start this career and should be given all of the opportunity going forward to continue to try for a Hall of Fame career.

Lance Flowers has had an interesting career thus far in the Victory Hockey League. While his offensive numbers, cumulatively, stack up with the other defenders on this list, he has had his struggles after a very impressive 59 point rookie season. After putting up 59 points in his rookie season, as well as amazing defensive numbers, he grabbed the Christian Stolzschweiger as well as the Jake Wylde trophies for top defensive defenseman and top rookie. His sophomore season saw his offensive numbers drop almost in half, to 34 points, and his defensive stats take a hit as well. Flowers looks to be back on track after his third season and has continued to put up enormous hit numbers as well as a good number of shot blocks. If Flowers can managed to return to his rookie season form he could easily catapult himself into the Hall of Fame conversation. If he can have a resurgence from his fourth season onward he could erase that tough second season fairly easily and see his name raised to the rafters.

While Jeff Downey has not accumulated the counting stats of some of the other players the one thing he has going for him is the continued upward trajectory of his career. Coming into the league Downey had limited ice time on the defending champion Vancouver Wolves which led to him only accumulating 24 points in his rookie season. As he has had his role continue to increase over the years his production, at least offensively, has improved dramatically each season he has been in the league. Over his three seasons his point totals have gone from 24 in his rookie season, to 41 his second year and all the way to 65 in his third season. His numbers currently don’t look like he will be on a Hall of Fame pace, however if he can somehow continue his huge growth from one season to the next you could see the stats begin to add up over time. However that could all change, as could any of these players’ outlooks, as their teams continue to adjust and evolve over the seasons.

As can be seen from this article there can be a good argument made for any of these top four defenders to make the Hall of Fame when their careers end. It is hard to compare these guys with their predecessors as offensive numbers across the league have taken a fall in recent years so they will need to be compared to other players in the current era rather than in the past to see how they really stack up.
