    Team World Almanac
Team World has just debuted its roster to the world stage, competing in the World Junior Championships. Team World suffers from a lack of experienced talent having to field a team largely made up of VHML players and highlighted by a few stars. Team World has bowed out of the tournament finishing with 2 wins and 6 losses. Although not the powerhouse of the tournament Team World showed its young and hungry future stars to the national stage and are looking to be a devastating force in the future.

Team World provides an excellent opportunity to bring players from across the world together on a single roster. The combined might of several countries came together to from this roster and shining a highlight on the upcoming superstars is important as a warning to the other teams.

    Australia

Killy Foilen – Killy is a 6’ 4” 230lb RW is still currently playing in the VHLM for the Las Vegas Aces. Foilen is a talented scorer having scored 28 goals in the last VHLM season. Foilen grew up playing in the major league circuit in Australia through inexperienced in America his scoring is highly refined and technically practiced. For team world to have a successful tournament it would be important for Killy to succeed at scoring goals against elite defense.

Standing at 6’ 3” and 180lb Ben uses his natural athletics to dominate the wing. Ben adopted a leadership role for the team being known as the team’s unofficial captain. Netherlands

Mike Van Stronk – Mike lives up to his name, he is a giant form the Netherlands standing at 6’ 8” and weighting 250lb Mike quite literally is Stronk. This Defense man make quite an impact whenever he takes the floor. Sometimes lacking in fundamental Mike Van Stronk makes up for it with his gigantic frame often effecting play just by his presence on the ice. Mike currently plays for the Las Vegas Aces and has scored 14 goals over his professional career.

    Egypt

Cinnamon Block – Cinnamon Block breaks boundaries and not only on the ice. Cinnamon is an Egyptian female that has proven she belongs in the VHLM and will look to be picked highly in the upcoming VHL draft. Her elite talent was too goo to be told to stay in female leagues Cinnamon is always striving to push herself to new levels against the best competition. Cinnamon is amazing at passing having an eye for placing the puck exactly where it has supposed to be. But her best talent is her checking ability despite her feminine nature this 6’ 3” D can absolutely deck opposing players to the ground.

    Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Khalibib Stiopic - Khalibib brings much needed experience to this roster, his elite defensive play highlights the team covering the teams many weaknesses. The 6’ 0”, 185lbs having played 3 seasons in the VHML his elite awareness will be needed for Team World to execute in the future. His latest VHLM season saw him create 87 points for the Houston Bulls in their pursuit of the title. That he plans to bring home to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and show his family.
    Serbia

    Breaking Down The Tournament

Game 1 World vs United States of America

The tournament started with a high scoring affair against the United States team, the final score of 2-5 the world team was dispatched. In the 5:55 minute of the third period a sense of gloom loomed over Team World as they trailed 0-4 but this goal streak by the US Team was snapped when Ben Stormed opened up the scoring for Team World banking one in from the right corner. No more then 6 minutes later Killy Foilen scored the other World goal. Team World fought valiantly but it was obvious they were inexperienced and outclassed.

This games Team World MVP is Killy Foilen

    Game 2 Word vs Europe

Team World’s second game was an underwhelming affair, a crushing 0-4 defeat against the Europe highlighted Team Worlds biggest weakness. Team World sent 21 shots at the goal and saw each one ricochet back at them the clang it made deafening in the players’ minds. This game was decided very early as the inexperienced Team World became dejected against the strong and psychical Team Europe.

This games Team World MVP is Charles Drumm

    Game 3 World vs Canada

Huzzah! Team World is able to score a rousing win against Team Canada a final score of 3-2 showcased some of Team Worlds superstar talent as they left Team Canada star struck. 7:18 minutes into the game Charles Drumm evened the game bringing it to 1-1. After another Canadian goal Walter Clements even it up 12:20 minutes into the second period. With no more then 3 minutes left in the final period Killy Foilen brought the puck up then scored the goal to give Team World the lead which they carried the rest of the game. Moral was high for Team World after this game players looked forward to the next game with heads held high.

This games Team World MVP is Walter Clements

    Game 4 Asia vs World

In this thrilling overtime game Team World valiantly lost against Team Asia to the tune of 4-3. Through it came in a loss this game was very different to the other losses. In comparison after going down big against Team Europe the World team collapsed and folded in on itself unable to complete a pass let alone execute a comeback. In the first period Asia scored two goals which before would have sealed the game, but the newly minted Team World fought valiantly. Peach Panther and Khalabib Stiopic scored goals for Team World tying the game and putting World in a position to win. Team Asia scored early in the third period, but Team World refused to lose as Ondrej Ohradka ties the game sending it to overtime. Unfortunately, Team World couldn’t finish against Team Asia. Through the loss this game is definitely a highlight for the young Team World.

This Games Team Word MVP is Khalabib Stiopic

    Game 5 World vs Asia

After the rousing game against Team Asia this game was just the rematch Team World was looking for. Unfortunately for Team World this game came to the same result a 3-4 defeat for Team World, this game speaks to the growth of these young players at the tournament. Throughout they have gained more experience and knowledge and have found ways to score even in hard positions. Again, going down big against Team Asia as only Mike van Stronk scored as Team Asia pushed 3 goals through Word’s net. In the second period Team World though valiantly as Walter Clements and Khalabib Stiopic scored. Team World were unable to capitalize on the run and bowed out of the game without scoring the third period.

This Games Team World MVP is Cinnamon Block

    Game 6 Canada vs World

Canada is known for two things. Being nice and winning ice hockey. Winning being the primary operative as Team Canada refused to lose to Team World twice. Team Canada made 3 goals whizz through Team Worlds net as only Killy Foilen was able to respond willing Team World to a 3-1 loss.

This Games Team World MVP is Killy Foilen

Game 7 United States of America vs World

Team World came into this tournament inexperienced and outclassed and while still inexperienced this team had a will to fight like none other. The time had came for Team World to get revenge for the thrashing they received at the beginning of this tournament. Team World flew out the gate to 1-3 victory against the odds. Team World gave America a taste of their own medicine as they had a three goal first period having Killy Foilen, Ben Storm and Ondrej Ohradka all score. Riding this first period Team World closed out the victory. It was this win that meant the most to the team it really signified how much they had grown.

This Games Team World MVP is Co between Block Buster and Ben Storm

Team World consist of players from 9 countries with the most diverse of backgrounds and the teams ability to come other is why sport is such a beautiful thing. Hockey as a game brings people together and I know these players are so thankful they got to make Hockey their lives.

In the season 66 draft the top 5 players selected were all forwards, the very first defensemen selected was Charlie Paddywagon at six overall to Davos. At 6’4” Charlie is a big body but also turned into a good skater and puck handler. His rookie season was a bit of a let down, with only 15 assists and a single goal and his defensive stats don’t really jump out either. Each year he has made steady improvements. In a re draft scenario he would’ve been selected third or fourth overall taking the place of Mars.

The next pick was the second defensemen taken in the draft. Jerry Garcia has turned into a really good two way defender who can bang in the corners but also quarterback the power play. His rookie season he has 27 assists and 31 points. He also had 119 hits and 145 shots blocked. He has improved in all those stats each year in the league. If we were to re draft he’d go third or fourth overall, and the team at 3 would have a hard choice between Paddywagon and Garcia, but would get a great player either way.

This Week with the Las Vegas Aces

These articles usually center around VHLM forward David Wallace, but this week we decided to take a different route and examine his team the Las Vegas Aces. With 52 games played the Aces currently sit in third place with 33 wins 15 losses and 4 overtime losses for a total of 70 points. Minnesota sits 3 points ahead of the Aces and Houston is 7 points ahead.

Aces general manager @Matt_O made a lot of great moves last year to set the team up for this year. He acquired additionally draft picks, while still managing to make the playoffs last season, and with those draft picks acquiring some of the best young talent available in the VHLM draft pool.

With three first round picks, numbers 3,4, and 7, the aces selected George Washington, Benny Graves, and Cinnamon Block. That set the team up to be very deep at the center position while also giving them a defender to build their blue line around.

In the second round the Aces has two picks and used one on David Wallace and the other on Blacker Velvet. These moves gave the team a solid top pair and a winger for either line.

Selecting Bruce Grimaldi was @Matt_O only mistake made this draft, as Grimaldi went and played in the VHL for Prague.

Jeff Tates and Benny Graves currently lead to VHLM in scoring, Tates with 108 points and Graves with 107. They have been on a crazy pace and many thought this was just a short run but they both have sustained in all season, and their VHL are anticipating their arrival to help bolster their respective teams. Cinnamon Block lead the defense with 64 points 58 of which are assists. This silky puck moving defensemen will one day be an all star in the VHL.

Have all these players good season produced wins? Or has the depth of the Aces been the key factor to their winning? After the top 3 the Aces have two players with 52 points, and three players in the 40’s for points and one more at 39 points. Wallace has been hard on himself but it’s likely without his production the team would’ve suffered a few more losses. With out the Tates and Graves producing the way they have been, maybe someone like Wallace or Washington or Foilen could’ve stepped up and put up those numbers. This team has been as good as they are because they are a good team, on and off the ice. They go out as a group on off nights, they workout out together, and carpool together. They respect each other, motivate each other, and help each other out. Tates might be the leader on the score board most nights but he doesn’t act like a snobby superstar. Wallace and Washington May not put up as many points as they want to but they are not crying about lack of ice time or wanting more, they show up play their role and help the team get the win however they can. That’s why, even though they don’t lead the league in points, they will make a deep playoff run and should be considered one of the best teams in the VHLM.

    This Week with David Wallace

David Wallace started his journey to the VHL last season with the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM. He had a few destinations available to him like Mexico City and Halifax, but after GM Matt’s pitch he decided that was the best place for him to start his career. As a free agent Wallace did well and helped push the Aces into a playoff spot to eventually lose in five games in the first round of the playoffs. Then came the draft where Wallace was selected by expansion team Prague Phantoms, and in the VHLM draft Matt brought Wallace back to Vegas with a second round pick. This year hasn’t been great for Wallace, in 15 games he has 3 goals and 9 assists, but he is a -7. That hasn’t hurt the team as Vegas is currently in second place if the VHLM with a 10-4-1 record.

The big news out of Vegas over the past few days is the naming of their captains, and Matt and Poptart shocked the VHLM world by naming Wallace to be their captain.

I’m honestly shocked, said Wallace, and continued its a huge honor, I was not expecting this especially with my play not being great, but they like the other things I bring to the team. It’s a great feeling, now I need to step up my game and prove that I can be a leader on the ice as well as off the ice.

Wallace is still a young player in this league but has been around the Vegas locker room for quite some time now. We will see how Wallace reacts to the new leadership role he was put in and see if he breaks under the new pressure or he rises to the occasion and becomes an even better player.

The Aces are currently playing great hockey even with Wallace putting up great numbers. If he can find a way to improve his game this team should be the number one team in the VHLM and get home ice advantage through out the playoffs. They are currently the team to beat and are playing without a legit number one goalie. Matt just signed a waiver goalie and hopefully by the end of the year this new kid can be good enough to help push them to victory through out the playoffs.

The Aces are also toying with their line up, with their top two players carrying the team they are looking for ways to get Wallace and others more involved and boost their secondary scoring. This will only help the team in the long run as they find the right chemistry. They seem destined for the playoffs so they regular season is like a long practice to hone their skills build chemistry and find the right line ups where every player is contributing night in and night out. The team has also been building up confidence and that will only grow as they win more games and build better chemistry. Every player on this team has been at the rink way before they’re required and working out to get better and better. They all help and push each other to be better everyday. We expect great things out of this team.

What a weekend for the talented young player from England. He was involved in two drafts.

With the 34th overall pick in the VHL draft the Prague Phantoms are proud to select David Wallace.

With the 18th overall pick in the VHLM the Las Vegas Aces are proud to select David Wallace.

Id be lying if I said I don’t love the teams I was selected for. Said Wallace after both drafts. He continued, I really wanted to play for Prague, I like the management there and the opportunity to be a cornerstone piece to a new franchise. Being back in Las Vegas l, where I started my pro career is great too. Again our management is top notch and the team looks to be really deep.

High praise from Wallace for both organizations and their management. Sources have confirmed that Wallace will not be joining Prague this season, he will remain in Vegas all season to help give him more professional experience and ensure he is 100% ready to make the leap to Prague next year for his rookie season.

Wallace and the Las Vegas Aces seems to be the team to beat in the VHLM next year, with 3 picks in the first round and two in the second, they acquired some of the best available talent out there. Along with a great GM and AGM to put forth a good game plan and line up the team looks poised for a long playoff run. Matt has also not shied away from making moves, last season it was trading away talent for picks, and this year it will be adding talent for picks to help them team on their run.

The other reason I am glad to be back in Vegas is because of the team we potentially have, we are going to be really deep and really good. I want a chance to bring a championship to the great fans we have here. Said Wallace

He will have a chance and it’ll be interesting to see how well Wallace does this season with the Aces.

Prague is a different animal, being an expansion team likely means they will finish at the bottom of the standings this year, unless they go on a miracle run. That being said this team is very young and hungry for the future success. If this group can stay together and grow together we can very well see the birth of a dynasty. Their draft focused in on drafting young active players that have big upside. Wallace was drafted higher than his pre draft rank which means management liked what they heard from him in their pre draft interviews. Other teams had interest in Wallace and if Prague didn’t select him at 34 it was likely he was going in the next few picks.

We we will see how Wallace does this season and in the future, he is a talented young player who is ready for a long and productive run in the VHL. We see him as being a future all star at the very least but time will tell. Will he take his money and run? Or will he put the time in the become one of the best the VHL has ever seen?

    5) Do you think we will do better than the other new expansion team DC ?
I think anything is possible. So I’m going to be working towards us being the best eventually.

    6) What do you think we need to get through free agency to make the team better?
Basically anybody that can score and play defense also. Maybe a veteran or an active younger player.

    Expansion Locations

The VHL is currently Developing two new expansion teams, so the million dollar question is where should these teams by located? And what will their team names be?

We will dive into the North American division first. The 5 teams are located in Vancouver, Calgary, Seattle, Toronto, and New York. To break it down further and maybe create two divisions in each conference we see three teams in western North America and only two in east. Adding a team to the eastern part would allow for the league to make divisions. We also see three Canadian markets and two American markets. That could lead to two different conferences like USA and Canada or the more traditional east vs west.

The first idea that came to mind is the Boston market. This could help either division idea since Boston is both in the east and in America. Boston is a huge hockey market and is always connected in rivalry with New York, not just in hockey but every sport. Toronto has also built up a recent rivalry with Boston so that could be great for the league here. A few Boston team names could be, Boston Shamrock, Boston Bandits, and Boston Whalers.

Another North American market that could be explored is Montreal. Montreal has a rich history in hockey and this would create an instant rivalry with Toronto. This would not work with the Canada and USA divisions but would work east and west divisions. A few Montreal team names could be Montreal Madmen, Montreal Freeze, and Montreal Royals.

Now we move over to the European conference. Forgive me I am not as familiar with the European layout so I’m not to sure how to break up divisions. It could be set up similar with east and west or we could look into a Europe division and an Asia division.

The first market that may be interesting is Beijing. Hockey is growing globally and China boasts a huge population. The KHL has teams in China and there’s an Asian hockey league so this is an untapped market in the VHL and a great way to grow our league across the world. Moscow would be an instant rival because of their closeness. Team names could be the Beijing Killer Rabbits, Beijing Ninjas, and Beijing Dragons.

The next European market that could be interesting would be London. This market would be huge, not only do you bring in English fans but Irish, Scottish, and Whales. England isn’t known for hockey but there is an English league and hockey is slowly growing their and a VHL team would only help push the growth. Team names could be London Monarchs, Great Britian Red Coats, and London Bulldogs.

The key theme for my expansion talk is the opening up of divisions in our conferences. Every other major sport has different divisions and it helps to promote rivalries. With these new divisions I see us having 6 playoffs teams. Three from each conference with the division winners getting the first two seeds and a wildcard team from either division. First place in each conference gets a bye round and 2v3 and winner playing against the 1 seed. We could also goto either teams with the divisions winners getting 1 and 2 seeds and then two wildcard from either division.

    The life of David Wallace
David Wallace was born in London, England with his mother and father. At the age of 4, Davids father found a new job in the USA as teacher and he decided to uproot his family to Manchester, New Hampshire. When they arrived in Manchester, they had no friends and did not know much about the local culture. Lucky for the VHL world, David's family moved to a house where they practically had the local hockey rink in their backyard. Young David saw many other children going to skating lessons and open skate on weekends, and desperately wanted to become part of this. On his 5th birthday he got his first pair of skates, and went straight to the rink for his birthday party. His family met the local youth team coaches and decided that David would join the league.

David joined the Manchester Monarchs junior association. This is where David learned how to become a hockey player. Early coaches saw that he had natural talent. He could skate like the wind, he would literally blow past the defense and then just stand there not knowing what else to do. Laughed his first coach Mike Drooper. He continued, We knew the kid could skate, but that won't win games just on that, we needed to help push him on a path to succeed. Would he be a sniper, playmaker, two way player. He was only 5 but you could see something special in this kid and we wanted to do all we could to help him succeed. That first season with the Monarchs was not great for Wallace or his team. The youth teams would play a thirty game schedule, and in his first season they went 5-22-3. Wallace scored 2 goals and added 5 assists.

Over the next few years Wallace and his teammates got dramatically better each season, and Wallace was clearly the stand out of them all. The team was lucky to be able to keep pretty much the same team while Wallace was there, each year this team would climb the ranks, from mighty mites, to mites, to squirts, and to pee-wee. When this team got to the bantam level, they were a well oiled machine. Wallace was having one hell of a year leading his team to win after win after win. The regular season ended, and the Monarchs would have a great record of 25-3-2, to finish first place in there league and making the playoffs for only the second time in their young careers. Wallace had a stellar season with 13 goals and a crazy 68 assists, setting a bantam Monarchs record for assists in one season. We have never had a kid that good in the program. said program director Kyle Kinkaid, he continued, He had blazing speed and when he made a pass, I mean just wow. He could find the open player if he was blindfolded and had his back turned, it was crazy. I am glad I got to see him play and develop. The playoffs were a whole new animal to this team, although they made it before it was squeaking in and getting blown out early. They went into the game playing very nervous and lost in overtime, 4-3. Wallace did not have a single point.

The next season the players had to make a choice, do they continue with the Monarchs, find a new junior team, or play some for Monarchs and the rest for local high school teams. The team all turned to their leader Wallace to see what he would be doing, and he loved his team, he loved his teammates, and the friendships he made, it was clear he was not going anywhere. That summer when pretty much the whole team decided to stay, they started doing harder off-season training to prepare for their future. They all skated everyday, went to the gym, and learned ways on how to eat more healthy. The season came and it would be their last season before they all tried out for the junior team. This year it was time to make an impression. With pretty much the whole team returning they pumped out another fantastic season, and even out doing the previous season, going 28-1-1, with another first place finish in their league. Wallace put up 11 goals, a dip from the year before, but shattered his assist record with 79 assists. The playoffs that year had 8 teams, in the first round they beat the Boston Junior Bruins 10-1, Wallace had 1 goal and 8 assists. In the second round the barely got by the Northern Mass Cyclones 3-2, with Wallace adding 3 more assists to his post season total. The semi finals is where the team got bad news. In the first shift of the game Wallace got hit and fell hard breaking his wrist. The team lost to the Bay State Breakers 4-0 ending their season early.

The next season Wallace took his time rehabbing and missed the whole season, ensuring that his future would be alright. The following season Wallace and most of his teammates made the Junior A team. The team would eventually play 62 games and play a mediocre 26-30-6 missing the playoffs. Wallace had a good individual season having 17 goals and 92 assists.

The next season would be the teams year before the draft. They trained their hearts out yet again in the offseason and all made the Junior A teams with hopes of having a much better year. They finished the season going 38-16-8 making the playoffs. Wallace had an even better season, reaching 20 goals for the first time and added 110 assists. He was feeling good heading into the playoffs. This was a 6 team playoff, with the top 2 seeds getting a bye week and the Monarchs were the second seed. In the second round they played the Boston Junior Bruins and beat them 3-1, Wallace getting an assist on all 3 goals. In the finals they would play against the South Shore Kings. In the regular season the team split their series 2-2 and this was set out to be avery competitive game, with the winner making the national championship tournament. After the first period the Kings were ahead 2-1 with Wallace scoring the lone goal. After two periods the score was now 4-1 Kings, things looked bleak for the Monarchs.

In between periods Wallace rallied the troops and got the team pumped up for the third, he asked not to allow the coaches in, for the team to get themselves motivated. This seemed to work, with Wallace scoring a goal 12 seconds in to make it 4-2. Four minutes later Wallace made a pretty pass to his line mate who beat the opposing goalie to make the score 4-3. With 2 minutes left in the game the Monarchs pulled their goalie and set up the play in the offensive zone. They worked the puck around to Wallace, he made a quik move taking two defenders and the goalie with him, and slid a pretty pass to his winger who tapped in the tying goal with only 25 seconds left in the game. The game went to overtime, 5 minutes in Wallace missed his assignment on defense giving the Kings a break away which led to the game winning goal.

That play hurt, Wallace was in tears, he wanted to win so bad and to get that close and lose, well it really hurt him. said coach Drooper.

After some time time Wallace made his was to VHL and signed a temporary contract with the Las Vegas Aces, to get more playing time before the upcoming draft. We look for great things from this kid, he could be a once in a generation talent.

    David Wallace
    6’2”  175 lbs
    Right Wing
    18 years old

Wallace was born in London, England but when he was 4 years old his family made a move to Manchester, New Hampshire USA. With this move came new sports and a new love for young Wallace. Wallace began playing hockey and had a lot of natural talent. Growing up he was always the fastest on his team and could get the puck to anyone anywhere. He also has a very high IQ for the game and can make decisions very quickly.

    Pro’s
Passing - Wallace can find anyone on the ice at anytime, it’s almost as if he has a remote control for the puck. He hasn’t played with many elite goal scorers, but anyone put on his line has elevated their scoring totals from the previous year. He makes the difficult pass look extremely easy and makes the easy pass look pretty.

Speed - Wallace has great speed, and not just speed but the ability to pass and make the right decision with the puck at top speed. He does not need to slow his pace to get a good pass off, he makes the right play at top speed. He can also control the puck and make great dekes at top speed, he will not slow his stride to make a move past a defender and make him look foolish.

Team Player - Wallace has a great team attitude, being the new kid in a new country is very tough and early on he developed a genuine love for the locker room and his teammates. He loves the team environment and has always put the team above individual accomplishments.

Wallace is also a product of smaller hockey community that’s not great at fully developing players which leads to a few weaknesses in his game. He is not great defensively, he can not throw a proper hit, and doesn’t have the best shot.

    Con’s

Defense - Early in his childhood, coaches saw his speed and passing ability and decided this kid doesn’t need to focus on defense. This may have hurt Wallace in the long term. Even though he is often a + players, this is a product of good teams and being on a scoring line. He has never played on the penalty kill in his entire playing career.

Shooting - Wallace developed excellent passing vision early in his career but could not get a hard or accurate shot. He can score goals but often his goals come from tip ins or rebounds from being in the right place at the right time. He very rarely will make a highlight reel goal, he has on a few occasions but they are few and far between.

Hitting - Wallace was surrounded with elite defensive players that would handle the heavy hitting and clear the lane for his speed. He never needed to be a hitter and therefor didn’t put his effort into it. Trying to make the major level we have seen him put more of an effort into becoming s better hitter.

Wallace has shown a tremendous work ethic, and with the proper coaching and training facilities he can become an elite talent. He is also not a player that is a product of a system he can fit in with any group on any team and help to immediately elevate the team play.
