  1. Legendary run! First off, so excited for you to be making a return to Western, take care of it for me! Secondly, @Triller for GM immediately (bonus points for a @Subject056 duo) Always refreshing to hear people stepping down for good life reasons, and I'm glad you got to be one of them AJ! Just don't forget to check in on us sometimes, even after you're famous
  2. Very excited to see which VHLM teams deserve to be in the VHL!
  3. i wanted an alliteration and peeling and scraping are like basically the same thing
  4. All of these sound fun! I can imagine how they would be done, at least hypothetically!
  5. 1. I think we are just as ready as anyone to win this thing! Lets just hope the offense gets rolling, and Dilson is ready for the challenge! 2. I think with the 91 and soon 93 classes being as dominant as they look to be, it makes a lot of sense to commit to gaining from those huge classes in a rebuild. 3. Calgary and Riga! I think Riga is going to blow up the playoffs this season with a really well rounded and emerging roster. 4. I think putting together a social media post outline (taking your own or another person's graphic and coming up with a clever caption) could be a cool way to do some multimedia stuff. 5. I only ever fished as a kid with way too much energy and absolutely no patience. I think I'd like it now, but I didn't LOVE it back then. 6. Oh it has been many many years now thankfully. Although again, I was a kid, and sitting for hours watching a couple adults do a ritual wasn't my definition of fun, I'm sure a friend's wedding would be far more enjoyable.
  6. I wanted to formally introduce my project and get some feedback, and maybe some questions that the community has that I might be able to answer. For those who haven’t been reading every single thing I’ve ever written, I am currently working on my portfolio so I can get a job in the scary field of programming things, and I’ve taken a real liking to Data Analysis and Visualization over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, all of my projects involve school resources, and having recently graduated, those aren’t going to be available to me forever. So my goal is to start building up some projects using things I care about, to support my degree on my resume. So here is where you are involved. I want to showcase (and actually have) my talents with web scraping, text formatting and regression analysis. I have done some projects before using a couple seasons of data, manually copied and pasted, but I want to do some more work to make it far more simple, and to increase the scale of data. I have some individual projects that I want to culminate into a relational database, tying users to players, teams, leagues and seasons. All of the stats the indices (that we have of course) along with a few of my own creation (more on that later), in some form of searchable and exportable format. I am currently practicing with player pages on the portal, pulling individual elements from those web-pages and working on creating the player tables. So far so good, just learning how the source of the portal is organized and how I can make logic that works for players and goalies before and after the hybrid era. This won’t end up in the final result, as far as I’m aware, but I want to get something working in an environment I’m familiar with. The next one to tackle, and will definitely be harder, is the indices. I’ll start with scoring and roster pages, importing end of season, and end of playoff builds to make an impromptu build screenshot tool. I know that’s something that @emidas has made for the SBA and I think it’s really cool, even if I can’t perfectly replicate it. The last item, and the interesting one to you folks is parsing the game commentary. I know many of us cry every time we go to the portal and see the toggle for giveaways and takeaways but find out the stats aren’t tracked. I also want to try to track some fun stats like zone exits and entries, and passing percentage. I’ll also grab some of the stats that only the index has, like own shots blocked and own shots missed, and hits taken. I also want to find out how many hits lead to turnovers. If anyone has any other questions they want answered before the next phase of stuff (the actual regression analysis) let me know! What stats do you wish were tracked based on the game logs?
  7. 1. All the regular season is for is determining who gets to compete for the Cup, and we are one of those teams! 2. Absolutely! We should have a strange late season boom that gives us too much confidence. 3. Not in the slightest, I have simply decided to be mid. But hey we had success throughout the lineup and that's what matters! 4. I definitely think there needs to be a team in Minnesota or Boston as those are huge hockey hubs. In Europe I think Madrid or Bern should get another shot! 5. What has a bottom at the top? 6. I play mostly management/strategy games, and then RPGs. My top games are Rimworld, Eastside Hockey Manager, Factorio, Skyrim and Cities Skylines. I have also unfortunately gotten hooked on Rocket League (no I'm not good).
  8. Happy birthday VHL!
  9. It is getting late into the season schedule now, so let’s take a look at the London United prospect pool. Alex Deluca @Deluca Seems to have disappeared for the last month, just shy of the magic 300TPE mark. Rome has a middling roster with a very lopsided talent curve, so I would expect them to be very interested in getting this player to return for next season. Anthony Simmons @Starchychaff Has been plugging away this season for a very strong Philadelphia squad. Earnings have slowed down significantly, but Vasteras will be glad to have his support next season nonetheless. Brad Marchand @McGriddy10 Very similar to Simmons, Marchand has had much less momentum these days, but has had a lot of success on the scoresheet. Hopefully their activity can be revived for Cologne to take advantage of this upcoming talent. Devon Giguere @omniscius Has been an absolute force in net for Houston this season, and will hopefully be continuing to keep this momentum into Vasteras next season. Grunkle Stan-dingyouup @Big Newff They have been showing up exactly long enough to maintain activity in the VHLM, and have been a very solid piece for Houston for some time. Unless the activity increases though, I can’t imagine much VHL upside. Marty Byrd @Marty B Earning at a very reasonable rate in weeks past, but has not been on the site in a couple weeks now. Seems as though he may need a check in soon to make sure that he doesn’t disappear. Nick Sansoe @Tipskid97 Picking away at the TPE, he is performing well in a depth role for the Istanbul powerhouse. They will need to work on establishing a build identity for when they get to the VHL. But there is lots of time to work on that in the offseason and the seasons to come. Sjin @Sjin I’m not sure what will happen with this player down the stretch, as this is the end of their dominant VHLM tenure with the San Diego Marlins. Has the TPE to make an appearance with either London or Oslo, so there will be discussions to be had in the offseason. Swinsola @Swinsola After a slower start in Geneva, their offense exploded in Vasteras. They have the opportunity to lead the team forward, and we shall see whether they will return next season to do the same. If they keep picking away and continuing to make good build choices, they’ll be a great player in the VHL. Thor Odinson @GoalPlays Thor Odinson will be joining the London United next season, and will hopefully be able to accrue some more TPE banked up to be a really useful piece for us next season. Really excited to GM this player for a second time, and see what we can do moving forward! There are a few other players under contract, or with the option of extension heading into the offseason, but until we see some more activity I won’t comment on their development and progression. Having a constant flow of prospects is important for maintaining good cap management and supporting our pieces through the next seasons. In other news, I just passed 3 years on the site! I’ve been all over the place the last few weeks working on a move to a new apartment, so it will be nice to get settled back into a routine here and keep up with the new and exciting content coming from our great members. I’m also heading up the Scouting division of VSN now, and with new writers coming in to join me I’m excited to see what we can do! We’re going to make a real emphasis on tracking first generation players on their paths to the VHL and giving them the spotlight to shine even compared to the top earning recreates.
  10. Most certainly!
  11. LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Return of a Marlins legend!
  12. God that Marlins recruitment one got us so many waivers. Nice to see a bunch of your awesome work bundled together!
  13. I have decided to become a Landon Wolanin hater since he has been so incredibly mediocre so far this season. With just a few more days left in the regular season, it seems likely that he will end up with well below his usual pace of points. I assume this is simply due to the fact that we have more help offensively coming from namely Vincent Laroche-Gagnier, and as such the points are spread out over another person’s statline. Thankfully Calgary as a whole is recovering from our rollercoaster of a season, and looks primed to have as good a shot as anyone to win this season. With Dilson back up and developing, the team can only get better down the stretch. London has been quite frustrating this season, with absolutely no scoring despite a talented offense and defense, but also has been quite good at limiting goals against. Whether that is simply having Jesse Teno or not, we’ll never know, but we’ve been owning the no-event hockey trope, and I suppose we’ll need to figure out how to shut down some top teams in order to make another miracle run.
  14. @TheNeonShaman so you don't miss this
  15. A long awaited return!
  16. The VHL has named me commissioner for the day! This will be a day remembered in VHL History for better or for worse. I spent the week preparing for this day, and to be entirely honest, most of the things I will be implementing today are not well thought out, nor are they entirely logically sound, but they are already coming to be and therefore all complaints are simply too late. Consistent Branding We take all of the logos for all of the teams for each of the leagues, good and bad, and we present them to an artist, that we would pay handsomely to make us a series of logos with consistent style, and general quality. The artist may replicate some of the logos in their style, or they may present some designs for new logos to better match the team name. Fix Competitiveness in the VHL/E I think the recent success of the VHLM can teach us a lot about what it takes to make a league that is competitive season in and season out. Committing to a league’s mission creates an environment where the league standings and competitive cycles match the expectations of the players. Much like the VHLM, the VHLE has very short competitive cycles (1-3 seasons) which means boom bust cycles destroy the standings, with an emphasis in the VHLE with fewer teams. The way the VHLM has helped remedy this is by making sure each team makes a significant appearance in the draft, and mandating roster limits for each team before expanding once the league population grows. IA players have destroyed the mission of the VHLE, enticing GMs to prioritize TPA over activity, and putting active players in lesser roles. Active players should be the stars of the show. As such I propose that the VHLE should remove IA waivers, and instead, VHLE teams should only be allowed to add players once they have returned to “Active” status throughout the season, much like the VHLM. I would not force teams to drop IA players, just to maintain numbers, but teams can drop IA players to replace them with Active players if they can acquire one. Although the VHLE should again follow the lead of the VHLM and institute a 9-4-2 roster limit until all teams reach that threshold. Players should join the team that gives them the best role, and as such encourage growth and activity. Next up is the VHL, who has had several franchises plagued with poor results for several real life years. The rebuilding cycle is simply too long for many GMs to commit to, and with constant management shifts, a perpetual rebuild is the state of several storied franchises. As such, the GOLD DRAFTING system will be implemented immediately, causing every game to have meaning, and with the support of the Spirit of Competition Rule, each team will have every reason to score as many points as possible. We need to be rewarding our worst teams with high picks and top prospects, propelling them forward back into competitiveness. VHL GMs will also be held to the highest standard. Having made your way to the peak of competition, the expectation is that you are on your game at all times. Draft Interviews/Scouting, Maintaining Competitive Rosters, Managing Prospect Pools and Regular Forum Activity are now mandated for GMs, and their associated AGMs. As a management team, all of these aspects should be handled without issue, as this is the standard we can hold. Honestly I was going to write some more but my brain is empty, no thoughts remaining. This is Theme Week, thanks for coming. Day as Commissioner is over.
  17. Your builder profile and the VHLM all-time GMs says you took a crack at in SSK S15-16 (not sure if you exclusively meant VHL GMing)
  18. We're approaching 75 seasons since Beketov last GM'd (if I'm reading the records right), have you had the urge to GM since, and what has kept you from pursuing that? What was your favourite/most exciting era/season in your experience of VHL History? What is something you miss that you wish could come back (even if it wouldn't at all work with the current VHL setup)?
  19. Incredible name!
  20. 1) I wouldn't say its a fear, more a general distrust. 2) I will definitely identify them, or try to communicate with them. 3) Usually the most available one, but Hershey's Cookies and Cream is probably it. 4) Cold. I can always put more clothes on. 5) You? I think? All I know is I've never touched it. 6) Yes. Except when it makes my head hurt.
