    Now that season 78 is nearing an end, many of the prospects drafted in the previous draft are looking more like future VHL Stars. Names such as Hard Markinson and Tui Sova have already graced the VHL stage and are making their presence known around the league. As of the making of this article, seven S78 draftees have made VHL rosters and many are in prime position to make the jump in S79. Among all these players are some hidden gems that teams were able to acquire later in the draft. These few players are proving to be potential steals for their teams and are putting in the work to make a VHL roster in the following season or two.

    Anze Miklavs TPE → 329
    @McKelvie

    The only first-round pick to be featured on this list, Miklavs is one of the most all-around players of the S78 draft class. He was one of the top-rated right-wingers and seemed like a lock for a top 10 pick. When the draft finally came, Miklavs dropped all the way to the 15th pick and right into the waiting arms of the Riga Reign. He spent his first year on a weak Mexico team where he exploded for 87 points in 72 games. His time with the Kings was alongside the previously mentioned Sova, and the two players became great leaders to a young squad. In season 78, he was selected to the Houston Bulls and became a huge part of a season that will see them make the playoffs. It will be interesting if the young winger can handle the pressure of entering his first playoff season. Miklavs is the 8th ranked S78 player in TPE and continues to grow and caps out every week. He will fit in nicely with a young Riga team and could turn into a future star who was passed up by 9 different VHL teams.

    Jaromir Lemiuex TPE → 301
    @hockeyis66

    In the S78 draft, The Moscow Menace found some of the top talents in the second round and 18th overall selection, Jaromir Lemiuex is already looking much stronger than his draft position would suggest. The dynamic playmaker has had a very strong VHLM career with the Yukon Rush and is coming off his strongest year with 108 points in 72 games which was tied for 9th in the VHLM. Lemiuex should be a good addition to the young squad of Moscow and will become a vital part of their rebuild and future success. Lemiuex could pair well with the goal-scoring center, Paul Atreides later down the road. In Terms of TPE, Jaromir Lemiuex has jumped to 11th in total earnings of all S78 players, surpassing many first-round picks and he caps out weekly. Clearly, Moscow knew what they were doing as they found a steal in the Danish right-winger, Jaromir Lemiuex.

    Leroy Johnson TPE → 242
    @Vkobe-v

    Leroy Johnson is the only goalie to appear on the list and for good reason. Johnson is another solid prospect that fell late in the second round to the Moscow Menace at pick number 29. He has made massive strides throughout the season as Moscow’s only goaltending prospect and will surely secure a spot on the final roster sooner rather than later. The goaltender out of the Marshall Islands had a relatively strong first showing as the backup for the Halifax 21st finishing with a SV% of 0.872 and a GAA of 3.52 in the 33 games he played. After being drafted by the Saskatoon Wild in the VHLM Dispersal Draft, his workload has had a major increase. Johnson played in 71 of the 72 games posting stronger numbers with a SV% of .893 and a GAA of 3.59. Both of Moscow’s goalies have expiring contracts and will become UFAs at the end of the season, leaving a wonderful opportunity for Johnson to step in for S79. He’ll be able to fill in the backup position and could become the goalie of the future for the Menace. His TPE earning has been very consistent and he caps out weekly. Johnson is the second-rated goaltender of the S78 class and has all the potential of being a star in the VHL yet almost fell to the third round.

    Darth Kaprizov TPE → 231
    @Darth Kaprizov

    A promising prospect that had to wait two whole rounds before finally hearing his name called. Kaprizov was always an intriguing name, he was a waiver pick up by the Mexico City Kings where he recorded 28 points in 43 games with the team. When the draft came, the young center fell all the way to the 34th pick in the 3rd round to the Calgary Wranglers which added to their limited prospect pool. Kaprizov would return to the Kings after being selected by them in the dispersal draft where he managed to put up an impressive 62 points in 46 games. Midway through the season, he would be shipped to the Philadelphia Reapers to have a run at a Founder’s Cup where he managed a respectable 13 points in the final 24 games with the team leading up to the playoffs. During season 78, he would be traded in the VHL at the deadline. Calgary sent Kaprizov to the HC Davos Dynamo where he should fit in nicely and be a big part of an ongoing rebuild. Darth Kaprizov has been constantly improving throughout the season and is climbing the ranks as he currently sits 23rd among all S78 players and will soon make a VHL roster. There is still room for improvement, but Kaprizov will surely become one of the stories of the S78 draft.

    These four guys aren’t the only players that could become huge steals for their teams however, they’re the most intriguing to me. In saying that, I still felt it would be disrespectful to leave some names out of this article so I added a few honorable mentions.

    @Vkobe-v

Love the style of this graphic, it’s so unique, and the colours you chose nicely complement each other and don’t get distracting. The lettering is pretty easy to read but maybe could pop a little more. I do really like the font you chose though, it's not boring and fits the overall look really well. 9/10

    1. We have officially been eliminated from playoff contention. What, in your mind, went wrong?

    We had a lot of young players, mainly waiver pick ups, this team is in the right path though.

    2. What is something you enjoyed about Ottawa?

    Great locker room, I enjoyed checking in after games to see what was going on with the guys.

    3. For players likely staying (already drafted in VHLM, under 250 TPE), what do you look forward to most next season, and what do you hope to accomplish with the Lynx? For players likely leaving (waiver signings, or leaving the M), what do you hope to do with another team, either in the VHLM or VHL?

    I defiantly want to win a cup in whatever league I'm in.

    4. Which goalie should win the Vezina Trophy? Andrei Vasilevskiy, Marc-Andre Fleury, or Philipp Grubauer?

    Fleury, he needs one before he retires.

    5. For undrafted players, do you want to play in the North American Conference or European Conference of the VHL? For drafted players, would you rather spend your whole career with one team, or move about the league?

    I'd like to stay with one team if I can.

    6. Favorite car?

    1995 Chrysler LHS

    7. Who was our MVP this season, in your opinion?

    I can't pick one, everyone did their part all season but I thought all our young guys did amazing and I see big things coming for them.

He played for his hometown team, The Wetaskiwin Icemen up until the age of 16. He led the team in points seven of the ten seasons that he was a part of the program. To this day he has the most career assists of any player who has ever dawned the Wetaskiwin jersey.

    His playmaking abilities caught the eye of the WHL and scouts had high praise for the youngster. In the 2017 bantam draft, Lazeski was selected in the 4th round, 71st overall by the Saskatoon Blades. Although scouts loved his skill on the ice, teams felt as though he didn’t have a high ceiling. His first season in the WHL had hockey fans worried about what he could become. He tallied 6 goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 47 games. Lazeski didn’t let the criticism affect him as he would enter his second season with more confidence than ever. He worked on his vision and hockey IQ during the offseason and his identity as a player was starting to take shape. His new set of skills took the WHL world by storm as he would explode for 23 goals and 78 assists for 101 points in 64 games. He would be named the Blades alternate captain midway through the season. The NHL became intrigued by the young right-winger however, Lazeski had other plans and decided to take his talents to the Victory Hockey League instead. The VHL was always something he was interested in, and with the talent higher than ever, it seemed like the perfect time to prove that he could compete with the best.

    Lazeski received a few offers from around the VHLM. Many of the teams were in the playoff hunt, but he decided to sign with the team that would give him the greatest opportunity, The Mexico City Kings. He played alongside some of the brightest young stars and while the team struggled, Lazeski flourished. He racked up 11 goals and 24 assists in 43 games with the Kings and looked poised to progress even further. At the end of the season, he declared for the S78 VHL Draft as a projected late second-round pick. Lazeski is motivated to become the steal of the draft and is confident as he’s always seen as an underdog.

    1. Has this season gone as you would've hoped for your player?

    The stats aren't where I would like them to be but they aren't too bad.

    2. For Season 79 draftees, have you received any interviews yet from VHL teams? For drafted players, what do you hope to accomplish in the VHL with your team, and when do you think you'll go up?

    I just want to win a cup with London and I honestly have no idea when I'll go up.

    3. What's been the best part of the VHL (game overall) for you so far?

    The small amount of time I was over a point per game during a season.

    4. Who do you want to win the Stanley Cup of the remaining teams (Golden Knights, Canadiens, Islanders, Lightning)?

    I want Montreal to win and end Canada's draught.

    5. What do you enjoy doing now that summer is almost officially here?

    Right now I'm just working.

    6. Favorite music band?

    Maybe The Washboard Union but I mainly listen to solo artists.

    Lazarus got a reaction from McWolf in VHLE - The Forgotten Cities
    The VHLE has been the talk of the town recently and with that, a lot of discussions are happening for which cities will house a franchise. From Paris to Stockholm, people have submitted some fantastic ideas for the initial 6 teams. However many cities have slid under the radar and have received little to no attention so I felt it necessary to bring light to these cities and how they could make a fantastic home in the VHLE.

     KYIV - With a population of just under three million people, Ukraine’s capital is the 7th largest city in all of Europe and sits in a country that loves its hockey. Ukraine has a professional league called the Ukrainian Hockey League (UHL) and even housed a team in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) named HC Donbass located in Druzhkivka which lasted two seasons before relocating to the UHL. Relating it back to the VHLE, Ukraine has produced many VHL stars. Players such as New York Americans’ defenseman, Kosmo Kramerev @Mongoose87, have represented their country well and more future players are coming into the league. There are currently eight active players who are Ukrainian, five of which are on a VHL or VHLM roster. It seems that Ukraine gets forgotten in all these discussions and has been mentioned a very small amount of times. Kyiv would provide a great market for the VHLE and would add a much-needed team to eastern Europe.

    Potential Name: Nightingales → National Animal of Ukraine

     Copenhagen - When talking about the teams of the VHLE, Nordic countries/cities are often in the discussion. Sweden and Norway are always at the top with cities like Västerås, Stockholm, and Oslo. Furthermore, both Finland and Sweden have a team in the VHL already with the Titans and Nighthawks. We seem to sweep a whole northern nation under the rug, DENMARK. Home to some of the best current and future VHL superstars, Denmark is rapidly growing amongst the community and we keep seeing more and more Danish players. Having a team in Copenhagen would allow fans from around the country to enjoy some great hockey. Denmark is a strong hockey nation, participating in many international tournaments, and also has its own professional league (Metal Ligaen). Copenhagen has gotten some attention from around the VHL, but I feel it should be a serious contender for a team whether that be at the start or further down the road as an expansion.

    Potential Name: Northmen → Another name for Vikings which Stockholm already used

     Minsk -  Belarus is another country that is a strong competitor when it comes to hockey. Minsk is a city that very few are acknowledging. With a population of almost two million people, Minsk would provide the VHLE with a new market which could lead to more international recognition. Although Belarus isn’t as popular amongst the VHL, adding its capital city would greatly improve the chances of interest among Belarusian players. Minsk already supports a team in the KHL and averaged the second-highest attendance in the league. Out of every country represented in the KHL, Belarus was ranked #1 in average attendance. Belarus loves its hockey, and the VHL should take its talents to the city of Minsk.

    Potential Name: Bison → National animal of Belarus

    Although there are many good options for the VHLE, I would love to see 6 teams located in countries that are not represented in the VHL already. I feel we are gradually becoming a more international league so establishing teams in unfamiliar places will be significant in the growth of the league. These 3 cities I mentioned would make great fits in the new league whether that be right away or a future expansion.

    I wanted to highlight a few more unlikely cities that I’d like to see being considered in the future.

     Ljubljana
     Hamburg
     Budapest
     Barcelona
     Brussels

    I agree with you on these two for sure. I picked Odessa over Kyiv for ease of pronunciation and I just prefer the way it sounds in general, but either of them or Kharkiv would be fine. Copenhagen for sure though.

    1. Theme week is upon us, and this season's theme is the VHLE. What do you plan on doing, either an article or graphic, etc.? This is a great opportunity to get 6 capped TPE as well as 6 uncapped for 1 point task!

    I will probably write an article near the end of the week when I'm less busy.

    2. We have lost our playoff spot to Mexico City -- for now. Do you think we could make an unexpected run this year if we secure a spot down the stretch?

    I don't have any doubt that we can make a run, we  just need to get to the playoffs and anything can happen.

    3. This week is also trade deadline week. Any suggestions (general) on what you might like to see happen? Any needs, etc.?

    It's hard to say, I don't know what we'd give up to get anything.

    4. For undrafted players, what is your dream team to go to in the VHL? For drafted players, how much are you looking forward to playing in the VHL, with the franchise that drafted you?

    I'm very excited, London just keeps getting better and I see a cup in our future.

    5. What's the ideal build of your player? In other words, where do you hope you'll get to eventually, either attribute-wise, or the type of player you want to be overall?

    Similar to The Terrible Trivium, a playmaker that can read the ice and set up the best opportunity to score.

    6. What is your favorite movie of all time, or your favorite movie genre?

    Lord of the Rings is the only movie I watch.
