  1. 1. That would be absolutely 2. The offseason would be longer, or the career over too soon and players not being able to reach the same level (unless we double the career length as well). 3. I think the render on the player page would be cool, and the retired jersey have already been added to the Team's page. 1. What is your most successful (or favourite) player of yours? (Or favourite player for first gens). 2. Do you follow the offseason tournaments (JST, ProAm, WJC, WC, Comissioner's cup)? 3. What is your favourite hockey match snack?
  2. Callum was excited when his name was called first in the S91 VHLE entry draft. He would play for the same franchise as his dad, before the latter made himself a name in the VHL as Calgary's longterm captain. It is here where his old man honed his tools and became a center, due to the lack of players on that position. He called DJ to check whether the flat was still in family possession, which of course would make things much easier for the Swiss defender. It was not but his father had still the contact details of the real estate company who provided him with his accommodation this many years ago. Cal-Gary checked the time and figured that it was still too early in Oslo to get in touch with the agent. So he postponed it to the next day. When he woke up, he noticed some missed messages and learnt that he was traded together with Greenland defender Leif Reingaard to Vasteras, which looks to compete in S91. In fact, one could be excused from thinking the Eagles are a Reingaard-family operated enterprise with Leif, Thor, Aanarsi and Dietrich either in the line-up or the prospect pool. He checked out the squad and was convinced that Vasteras is setting to compete with a stacked roster. He is tied best defensive player together with Spanish Defender-turned-forward (and certified Mississauga legend) Hannibal Barca. He is also the toughest guy with a good physical play and no fear to drop the gloves. He brings some much needed grit to Sweden, which latest is essential come playoff time. Offensively, there are more gifted players in the roster and Janser is likely to play a lot of penalty killing minutes and take the role of the defensive anchor of his line as well as occasionally draw a line in the sand as enforcer. Even though the VHLE will be a stepping stone for the Calgary native, he will give his best regardless. Remarkably, Vasteras is no stranger to the Janser family, as Callum's uncle Marcel holds several franchise records for the Swedish team. It is no surprise then, that Marcel got a call from his nephew with the same questions as his older brother. Again, the twice Continental Cup winner has sold his flat in Vasteras ages ago, but provided the address of his then-real estate agent to Cal. The Renaissance Cup is one trophy which so far eluded the Janser family. We will see whether young Callum will be able to change that.
  3. Changing a rainbow coloured shirt against a brown one... now that is soldiering...
  4. Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg A lot has happened in the VHL/E/M universe since we last wrote about our protagonist. Cal-Gary is playing for the Rush, which recovered after an abysmal start and snatched the first seed of their conference, securing a playoff spot. Callum confirmed his reputation as a defensive behemoth and lead the league in hits and is amongst the top ten in assists, shots blocked and take aways. He is also competing in the WJC, this time for the European team under GM Otis Boudreaux. In this team though he has a more defensive role as Polish prodigy Dudzinska and S90 first overall pick Oven are the more offensive minded backs in that roster. The Calgary native is tied-second amongst the top hitters of the tournament and in the top ten in the blocked shots department. Europe is sitting at the 2nd seed at the moment, behind a surprisingly strong Team Asia, with still some hockey left to play. As thrilling as all of the above is, the real excitment came at draft day. According to most of the pundits, there was only one place CGY could land, and that would be at first overall. This pick belonged to the New York Americans who are amidst a rebuild and want to finally get a cup after a 37 season draught. If Thadius Sales would not commit to Janser, the latter would almost certainly fall to Moscow, who had three of the top five picks in the S91 draft. Alas, Euron Leonidas was licking his lips in vain, as the New York General Manager pulled the trigger as soon as the draft opened and announced: 'With the first pick of the S91 draft, the New York Americans proudly select from the Saskatoon Wild, defence man Callum Gary Yannick Janser.' Graphic courtesy of Jason Kranz The young Swiss wasted no time and jogged to the podium for the traditional shake hands and photoshoot. Later on he would answer the questions of all the news outlet present at the draft. One of which is our trusty Jean-Luc Lieuxperroux. JLL: 'Congratulations, Callum. First overall pick in the entry draft. According to my research the first Swiss since the legendary Scotty Campbell to do so. You must be thrilled, surely?' CGY: 'Yes I am indeed and don't call me Shirley. Jokes aside, I hope no-one expects me to pee in a phial tonight, as my endorphine levels must be off the charts. I mean, I expected a top five spot with all the scouting reports I read and the interviews I conducted, but it is still unreal to me that I went first overall.' JLL: 'Will the Americans call you up for the next season, as they are in desperate need of defencemen?' CGY: 'Thadius and I agreed that it would be in everybody's best interest if I went to Europe for one season to hone my skills. New York is going through a rebuild and there is no benefit to prematurely bring in talent, which may not be ready to compete on this level yet.' JLL: 'In New York you will be reunited with your fellow Wild, Rin Kagamine. Any thoughts on that?' CGY: 'It's certainly cool to already know someone when you come into a new locker room. I think we gelled pretty well in Saskatoon, especially during the playoffs when we were the only experienced defenders to hold down the fort. As far as I know, they will be going to Europe for one season as well. It would be cool to be in the same team in the VHLE as well, but that would be a bit too much asked for. We are not called Dixon/Grimes or McGryer/Anand after all.' JLL: 'So what are your plans for the immediate future?' CGY: 'Well, first I will finish the JST and the WJC and hope to win both. Then I will fly over to Europe to whatever franchise picks me up in the incoming draft. Meanwhile, I will look for a place to live in the big apple. Ideally not all too far off from Madison Square Garden, where we will play our home games. I hear traffic is quite annoying in NYC and if at all possible I would like to avoid it. Maybe people will see me ride the subway when I go to practice.' JLL: 'We understand that you were also in contact with Kris Rice of the Wranglers. How did that go?' CGY: 'We did chat, and it is well known that I would have also liked to join the franchise my dad had so much success with. But given the circumstances, it was highly unlikely for him to find trades to move up in the draft, without risking the future of the franchise. I understand that and it is just what life sometimes is.' JLL: 'Your family seems to have a habit to fall to Original Eight teams. Your dad and uncle both were picked by the Wranglers back in S81. And now you are going to join the Americans who co-founded the league under the Hamilton Canucks and then rebranded/relocated in S7.' CGY: 'It is indeed uncanny how that played out. But this is all in the past. I will focus on the present and improve further to prepare for the future. I am determined to put the Americans on track for a long overdue cup win.' JLL: 'That is all I had for today, thanks and good luck.' CGY: 'Thanks for having me.' Here are Janser's stats for the JST: 30gp, 5g, 24a, 29pts, -5, 39 PIM, 118 hits, 57sb, 2ppg, 1gwg, 1 First Star distinction And here for the WJC: 6gp, 1g, 2a, 3pts, -4, 8 PIM, 22 hits, 17sb We will revert on the young Swiss' career as soon as we have news to report. Edit: In the interim, the VHLE draft took place and CGY Janser was selected at first overall by the Oslo Storm. Interestingly this is also a franchise with a connection with the Janser family. Daniel played two-third of a season and was for a while part of arguably the best center-winger combo in the history of the VHLE with Chinese Boulet winner Yun Chiang. https://vhlforum.com/topic/140500-how-we-snub-not-only-one-player-but-a-whole-class-theme-week/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/140747-cgy-janser-clearing-the-gutter/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/140772-the-cgy-janser-story-part-iv-almost-crunch-time/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/141062-the-cgy-janser-story-part-v-regular-season-is-done/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/141275-cgy-janser-sent-packing/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/141054-let-the-gloves-hit-the-ice/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/141334-the-cgy-janser-story-part-vi-between-two-seasons/ 1033 words
  5. I wish you all the best in your endeavour... I guess
  6. I do not disagree with that statement. I just wanted to point out that Adolf Dassler only joined them when they came to power (probably more to protect his business interests then out of conviction) and was not necessarily a book-burning, foam-out-of-mouth, racist sob that people often associate with the term 'nazi'.
  7. I think that term is thrown around too cavalier, especially with the stereotypical picture one has... from what I read, he was a member of the NSDAP (and by definition, this makes him a 'nazi') like so many other Germans (and especially business owners) at the time. That does not make him a bad person or even a criminal per se. Again, from what I read, he never engaged in political activities and was after the war largely acquitted of the charges put against him.
  8. I mean, he gifted Jesse Owens the shoes he whoopped the German athletes' their asses at the 1936 Olympic games...
  9. Why is that a bad habit (okay in a restaurant it might be questionable, but then again you finns invented the sauna, so...)
  10. Callum has found a bed and breakfast pension in Whitehorse, run be an elderly couple. He likes the homey place they made themselves. Canadian Thanksgiving was just come and gone and they treated him like family rather than a guest. They told him that their only son unfortunately passed away way too early when his plane crashed over the Atlantic Ocean. The rescue party could not even find a body for them to bury. This was twenty years ago. 'But', they said, 'we carried on. Our dear Charlie would not have wanted us to despair.' So they helped out in their church, and supported any fund raiser, especially when this was for the benefit of children. Cal was impressed by this couple's resilience and tenacity. They asked him to not 'Sir' and 'Ma'am' them but to call them Vernon and Margareth. Cal-Gary felt so welcome he wanted to do something for them, which also would help to distract him from the incoming draft. So he asked, whether there is something which needs done around the house. His grandpa has taught him many things about maintaining a house. Vernon was almost ashamed when he said that there was something. 'The apple trees need some pruning and my back does not allow me anymore to climb a ladder. I am not as spry as I used to be. So this would come in very handy.' 'Say no more', exclaimed Callum and swiftly fetched the ladder, working gloves and the shears and went about the pruning business. Later that evening, the three sat at a roaring fire, drinking some mulled wine. Margareth and Vernon noticed that their young guest was very quiet and had this one-mile-stare. 'Is something bothering you, son?' asked the retired firefighter. 'Ah, it is nothing, Vernon. Rather silly, actually. Do you remember when I told you that I play hockey?' 'Of course I do. What about it?' 'Well, I am a little anxious where I will be drafted and where my journey will lead me. I do have a back up plan, so it is not existencial, but it is gnawing at me all the same. My dad was kind of a big name in the league and I do not know whether I will do his legacy justice.' Margareth chimed in: 'Listen young man. You are a good person with his heart on the right spot and a desire to help your fellow man and to do the right thing. No matter where you will go, the people in charge can consider themselves lucky to get you. And rest assured, even if you were not to play a single shift in the big league, Vernon and I are convinced that your dad is proud of you regardless.' 'Thanks, Margareth. This means a lot to me. You took some of my concerns away.' He turned his attention back to the fire, indulging in the crackling noises it makes and the smell of beech. His mind was at ease now and a smile sneaked onto his face.
