  1. A little more first overall/draft trivia: -7 first overall picks did not win a Continental Cup. Two of them are still playing (John Sleeman, Titan Kronos). -The S27 draft is the only draft in which every first round pick won a Continental Cup. In S14, first overall Malcolm Kelly was the only first round pick to not win a cup.
  2. Results of said research: the following members have been drafted first overall multiple times: tfong (S7, S18) slobo (S14, S28, S38) CoachReilly (S26, S35) 8Ovechkin8 (S20, S36) Frank (S34, S47) Higgins (S39, S48)
  3. I'm curious to see how many members have been first overall multiple times. Time to research.
  4. not gonna lie, it'd be kind of hard to play for a GM who doesn't even at the very least collect welfare

  10. Brampton falters with 0-2 start against Yukon After finishing out the regular season with the best record in the VHLM, the Brampton Blades watched as the Yukon Rush beat the Ottawa Lynx in six games to set the stage for the North American Finals. Hoping to build upon their late-season success, the Blades looked to capitalize on their home-ice advantage to get an early lead in the series. Alas, it was the Rush who leave Brampton with the series lead, putting the Blades in an early hole. Game One was a showcase in the difference in goalie caliber between the teams. The Blades had 44 shots on Ivars Klajums, but only Diana Maxwell managed to get the puck past him. Taking 16 shots of her own, Maxwell notched a hat trick to account for Brampton's three goals. She earned the first star of the game, but that was not quite enough to make up for Quinn Stevenson's lapse in net. The Rush scored four on just 22 shots. The offense came from an unexpected source for the Rush; Sterling Archer, who had just three points in the series against Ottawa, scored two goals and added an assist while Asher Donovan, the likely MVP, tallied just a single assist. For the Blades, Sven Wolf had three assists and won 25 of 36 face-offs. Diana Maxwell's hat trick was not enough for the Blades in Game One. In Game Two, Klajums once again demonstrated his superiority over Stevenson, who once again allowed four goals. Donovan played a more vital role in this win for the Rush, with two goals and two assists. The Blades scored just two in this game: Maxwell's fourth of the series and Theo Axelsson's first. Axelsson, who is projected alongside Maxwell to be a top two pick in the S50 VHL Entry Draft, also added six hits to bring his two-game total to 13. Jack Kraken, who had 58 points in 36 games with Brampton during the regular season, has been kept off of the score sheet thus far. One bright spot for the Blades was their penalty kill unit; the Rush managed to convert on just one of ten powerplays. The Rush are looking to return to the finals for the first time since S41. During their first 11 seasons after joining the VHLM as an expansion team in S31, they appeared in the finals six times and won four championships. Success has been hard to come by since then, as this is just their third playoff appearance in the last eight seasons. Brampton, one of the better teams historically, has just one championship in the last 22 seasons. Despite this, they still have the second most of any franchise with seven Founder's Cups. The Rush are taking a 2-0 series lead home to Yukon. The Blades are currently down but not out. Although they are clearly outmatched in net, the potency of this Brampton offense is undeniable. They led the regular season with 277 goals, 29 more than the next highest (Yukon). While Donovan was the league leader in goals, Axelsson and Maxwell were just behind him. With Wolf in there to set these two up and Kraken hopefully providing another threat during the remainder of the series, there should be no rest for this Yukon defense. Eager to prove themselves as they head into their draft, Maxwell and Axelsson will be the two to watch out for. The Blades will also need Stevenson to at least perform a bit better if they want to get back into the series.
  11. how many recruits do we need to get a draft lottery? @Higgins

  14. Is it cool if I just start writing some of these? For now, I'll just stake claim to writing Slaughter's article since Bentley and Xin Xie Xiao have been spoken for. If they remain unwritten for a while I'll come back to them later.

  16. Maxwell's Potential Draft Destinations First things first, let's assume that whatever team has the potential to draft Diana Maxwell doesn't trade that pick, because that would just be a silly thing to do. As things stand, three teams have a chance to win the Maxwell sweepstakes: Calgary, Helsinki, and Stockholm. The Vikings have the best odds, as they have Seattle's first round pick to go along with their own. As someone who is heavily invested in Maxwell's draft destination, I feel it pertinent to take a look at what sort of future these three teams might hold for Maxwell. Calgary Wranglers The Wranglers don't appear to have a lot going for them at the moment, or at any moment in the near future. For Maxwell's career aspirations, it may be a good thing to go to a team where she's already the best player in her rookie season. The bulk of the offense will run through her, giving her ample opportunities to score. But will Calgary be good enough by the time she expects to be competing for championships? Ted Doughty isn't turning out as well as expected, and he's the only young talent on the roster. Travis Gowecny and Tobias Klingberg should be joining the team as rookies next season, with Jim Lahey joining the mix eventually. That makes for a decent start, and if Maxwell were to join the group, it could potentially make for a solid team down the line. An offensive duo of Maxwell and Gowecny would be one to fear. Calgary also has another first round pick (Toronto's) in this draft, with which they could potentially add Joanna Akerfeldt as their goalie of the future. They only have one first round pick in S51, that being their own, likely another lottery pick. Helsinki Titans The Titans already have a very promising goalie in place. Dmitri Dadonov, who may very well win the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy this season, is one of the top young goalies in the VHL. With him already in place for what will likely be a long time, it's all about building around him for Helsinki. Maxwell would come into this team competing with Thor Odinsson for the lion's share of the goals. Shayne Gow is a respectable prospect, but he is no superstar. While the Titans do also have Cologne's S50 first round pick, which will likely turn into a defenseman, their future will depend heavily on what they can do with their three S51 first round picks, whether it be making good selections or trading them for good value. With the current era of top goalies in the back half of their careers, Dadonov should be one of the league's best in net when Maxwell is hitting her prime, which may mean Helsinki would sync up well with her competitive timeframe if they can add the necessary pieces to fill out a roster. Stockholm Vikings Of the three teams, Stockholm is the worst off in terms of young talent. Atticus von Braxton IV is a slightly older goalie than Dadonov, and Jack Kraken is more like Gow than Odinsson, as far as talent goes. That wouldn't be such a bad thing if the list wasn't exhausted at just those two, one of which (Braxton) will already be in his fourth season when Maxwell is a rookie. However, Stockholm does a second top four pick in this draft, with which they could grab another forward in Essian Ravenwing or Asher Donovan. They have a third first round pick to use on a defenseman, and they have the means to acquire more prospects in S51 as they currently possess two firsts in that draft. They seem to be in a similar position to Helsinki, but a little bit worse off. The allure of helping turn around the league's worst franchise could be the best thing the Vikings have going for themselves.
