The purgatory which is called 'off-season' is finally over and we have news and game summaries for our valued readership again. First bullet point in this issue is that Daniel Janser has been awarded the Sheriff's Badge on the traditional annual Wranglers party. The Sheriff's Badge is given to the Wrangler who displayed exceptional leadership on and off the ice. The young Swiss was also trusted with the coveted 'C' on his chest. He will be supported in this responsibility and honour by the Alternate Captains Kotkakoivu and GoodBrandSun.

We had a chance to get a hold of Janser after the ceremony for a quick interview:

Jean-Luc Lieuxperroux (JLL): 'Daniel, you were just awarded the Sheriff's Badge by the Wranglers' organization and made Captain of the team going into S85. What are your thoughts to that honour?'

Daniel Janser (DJ): 'Hi Jean-Luc, glad you could make it to our little function. It certainly is an honour, and I do not take it as granted. I was convinced that Saku will wear the 'C' as he did in our last two campaigns. At the end of the day, it does not really matter to us as a team. We encourage accountability and initiative in our locker room. Everyone knows what is expected of him, be it league veterans like Tessier or Jokinen, or be it rookies like Strasmore. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and are our greatest critics. I can truly and with conviction state, that the 'C' and the 'A' are more for the refs than for us. We have so much leadership in our team, that we have twelve 'C' in our roster.

JLL: 'Calgary traded up in the draft to secure the rights on Strasmore, which some pundits saw as a reach. What do you think about the pick?'

DJ: 'Phil is a great addition and fits seamlessly into the Wrangers' organisation and its values. He may not have been the most talented player available at the time he was selected, but we knew that he is a perfect fit and that he will make an immediate show up in the roster. He is a reliable, physical defenceman and we are happy to have him.'

JLL: 'The Wranglers also secured the services of Gaming on the FA market. Is this a sign of doubt towards Dahl's abilities?'

DJ: 'Absolutely not. Dahl has been a back bone in our team so far. It is more about giving him some more rest time, so he will be fresher in the post-season. Ideally, we will end up with two goal keepers, which we can rely on every night. Should one of them have a bad spell, we know the other one can jump into the breach.'

JLL: 'Thanks, Dan and have nice rest of the party.'

DJ: *winks* 'I do not know what you are talking about, I am going home and tuck in. Stay safe.'

And now to something completely different: our game summaries.

6-2

The opening game of the S85 season saw an encounter by two contenders for the Cup. The Wranglers were reminded that there is a long and rocky road to the finals ahead and got defeated with a score of 6-2. Davos scored a brace in the first frame, the first blood was drawn in a power play. Dynamo increased their lead in the second period with another power play marker, before Wolanin scored the first Calgary goal of the season. In the final frame, Davos sped away with their third converted power play and an even strength goal, before Janser scored with 1:10 minutes left in the game. Jokinen intercepted a pass and relayed the puck to Janser. The Swiss back to the American defender who passes it to Kotkakoivu. The attacker takes a shot but barely misses. The puck comes back into play from behind the net and Janser is the quickest to react and buries it topshelf with the backhand. Needless to say that this was too little, too late to make a difference in that game. Especially when 21 seconds later the team conceded their sixth goal. Dynamite (2g/0a), Tavau (1g/2a) and Detroit (1g/2a) were named the three stars of the game. Dahl (.864) was outplayed by Davis (.951), though in his defence, he did not get an awful lot of support by his front row. Calgary's power play was inexistent (0/4) and the penalty kill units will have to review their playbook (2/5).

Daniel was credited with 1g, 0a, +0, 4 PIM (Double minor for Roughing, the second lead to a goal against), 4 hits and a 44.44% success rate at the hashmarks.

Marcel contributed 0g, 0a, +0 and 1sb to the tally in his first ever VHL game (not bad for a rookie defender in a 4 goal loss).

3-2 (SO)

In the second match, the Wranglers redeemed themselves in a 3-2 shoot out win. Gonçalves found the back of the net in the power play, 5:46 minutes into the game. The second assist was given by Marcel, scoring his first point in the big show. LA drew the game before the first intermission though. The second period came and went with neither team being able to score. At the beginning of the third frame, power play specialist GoodBrandSun converted a man advantage for the Wranglers. Unfortunately, the Stars were able to tie the game with a power play marker of their own. The sudden death did not bring any decision, so the teams had to throw a dice by way of shoot out, with the better end for Calgary. Vandelay (44 saves), Miglaskems (1g/0a) and Murray (0g/2a) were awarded the post match honours. Dahl (.923) despite a very decent performance got Vandelayed (.957). Calgary's special teams showed significantly improved with 2/4 for the power play and 4/5 in the box play.

Daniel logged 0g, 0a, +0, 1 hit, 1sb and 45.65FO%.

Marcel had 0g, 1a, -1, 3 hits and 2sb to his name.

4-5 (OT)

In the third match of the season, the Wranglers defeated the Vancouver Wolves in a tight game 5-4 in over time. The BC team scored the only goal in the starting period with only 2:18 minutes left before the intermission. Tessier tied the game with his power play marker in the second frame. However, Vancouver went on to score a brace before the third. Gonçalves with a power play conversion and Kotkakoivu as well as Jokinen with even strength goals gave the Albertan team a lead, before the Wolves tied the game with less than five minutes to play. Regulation time did not bring a decision, so the teams went into sudden death. Kotkakoivu delivered the coup de grace after less than three minutes played. The three stars were given to Pearce (1g/2a), Kotkakoivu (2g/0a) and Gonçalves (1g/3a). Honestly, we think that Leandro got FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY here. Dahl (.892) outperformed his vis-a-vis Fuhr (.800) by quite a margin. Calgary's special teams shone bright with a 100% efficiency each (2/2 in the power play and 5/5 for the penalty kill).

Daniel had 0g, 0a, -2, 4 PIM (Both times High Sticking, no effect on the score), 4 hits, 1sb and 62.75% wins at the draw.

Marcel was reported with 0g, 0a, +1, 1 hit and 1sb.

3-1

In the rematch of the opening game, the Wranglers bested Davos in a 3-1 victory. Davos scored first in power play mid-way through the first period. GoodBrandSun reset the game before the first intermission. The second period saw the lone goal by Kotkakoivu before the teams were dismissed to the locker room for the second time. The final period saw one goal only, too. This time an early power play marker by Tessier. Davos was not in a position to respond and hence the Wranglers walked away with a win. The three stars went to GoodBrandSun (1g/1a), Dahl (33 saves) and Tessier (1g/1a). Dahl (.971) showed an almost flawless performance against Davis (.870) in Davos' net. Calgary's power play was okay (1/5) and the box play was around the same level (3/4).

Daniel was noted with 0g, 0a, +0, 2 hits and 55.26FO%

Marcel achieved 0g, 1a, +1, 1 hit and 1sb.

Calgary sits at the moment on the top of the very competitive NA conference.

The Jansers' stats read as follows:

Daniel: 4gp, 1g, 0a, -2, 8 PIM, 11 hits, 2 sb and 51.85FO%.

Marcel: 4gp, 0g, 2a, +1, 0 PIM, 5hits and 5sb.

Stay tuned for further update for the Jansers' quest for the elusive Cup.
