VHL Cut Gallery 2.0 is now live.The original cut gallery was lost when the old site went down and I was unable to retrieve it before it disappeared into the depths of the internet with Robbie Zimmers and Viet Trieu. I would like to thank boubabi and Draper for helping me with this project, as well as Jamie for providing some good cuts to get the gallery up.
 
I want to stock up the gallery with lots of cuts so if anyone wants to try their hand at it, they will be added to the gallery (pending quality). With any of your cuts please provide the void as well.

The story behind Don Draper’s arrival to the VHLM is an interesting one. While I won’t get into too much detail in this profiling, I will say that after announcing his entry to the Season 37 VHLM Dispersal Draft only 24 hours prior to the draft, he was selected in the first-round by the Yukon Rush. This was a huge surprise to many analysts and spectators watching the draft. Officials from within the Rush organization later stated that when they looked at Draper they saw “dedication, potential, and passion.”
 
Play Style
 
Donald Drapers play style is extremely similar to that of Scott Stevens, former captain of the New Jersey Devils over in the NHL, in the sense that they are both offensively capable yet defensively explosive. We have even seen Draper perform Stevens’ trademark hit a couple of times this season, making guys think twice about crossing center ice with their heads down.
However, like Stevens, Draper certainly isn't all hits. The combination of Drapers speed, strength, and big shot make him more than capable on the offensive front. While we haven’t fully seen Draper in offense-mode yet this season, as he has often been acting as a stay-at-home defensemen (presumably at the direction of the Rush coaching staff), looking at his past career we see huge potential for this two-way defensemen in the offensive zone as he progresses as a player.

VHLM Season 37
 
As previously mentioned, Don Draper was drafted by the Yukon Rush in the Season 37 VHLM Dispersal Draft. So far this season we have seen Draper play impeccable defensive hockey, but not much else. Although we certainly expect to see Draper break out as an offensive player at some point in his career, it is clear that now is not the time. This is probably a good thing. He needs to establish himself as a solid, top-notch defender before he shows what he can do in the offensive zone.

As you can see by the stats posted above, Draper’s offensive stats are meager. However, you can see by his plus/minus that he is a force to be reckoned with defensively. I believe Draper is aiming to become someone who his teammates know they can rely on before he starts taking risks.
 
Pros/Cons
 
To finish this report off, I will give a brief summary of some of the pros and cons that come along with Donald Draper.
 
Pros
 
Skating: Donald Draper has a great stride. He’s fast enough to catch any player who manages to sneak behind him and his partner, yet he has enough endurance to beat other players to the puck every single time.
 
Defense: As I have said many times throughout this report, Draper is one of the most solid guys you will find on defense. He has the strength and hitting power to take out his opponents, or he has the long reach of his flawless poke-check when he wants to play it safe. He holds the blue line and shuts down the other team. You can’t ask for a better d-man than that.
 
Dedication: This is one thing I didn’t mention above. Donald Draper’s dedication to his teammates, his coaches, and his progress as a player is almost overwhelming. This is possibly the main reason he was drafted by the Rush; they need someone they can count on to be dedicated to improvement and growth.
 
Cons
 
Temper: While Draper definitely has his pros, his temper is certainly not one of them. We have already seen him allow the other team to get under his skin a few times this season and cause penalties as a result of his lashing out. I’m confidant Draper, being the conscientious guy that he is, will work to get his temper under-control for the benefit of his team.
 
Sore Loser: In hockey, passion is usually a great thing. However, it comes with its downsides. Draper is known to let his passion get the best of him, particularly after a tough loss. His teammates have said that he often won’t even speak in the dressing room after loss. Draper better start being a little more positive after a loss if he hopes to make it to the VHL.
 
Quiet: Don is not known for being the most vocal guy in the room. He often keeps his thoughts and input to himself, which could damage him in the future is he doesn’t sufficiently communicate with his coaches/teammates.

So next week Slaughter should break top 20?

I would say it would be fair to complain if we had to pay $$$ to be on this site, but, since we don't and everyone with a job donates their free time to do it, there's really not a lot to complain about.

Yukon Recovers After Shaky Start
 
There is no doubt that the Yukon Rush are one of the favourites for success this year in the VHLM. For that reason, many of us were surprised when we watched their first game of Season 37 and saw them lose to the Moscow Red Wolves in a hard-fought 5-3 game.

The Rush seemed to be playing individually, rather than as a team. It was clear that the Rush needed to spend some extra time on the practice ice and build some chemistry before they played again. It seems as though the coaching staff of the Rush agreed. We have now seen the Rush play 3 more games and we have seen steady improvement each game.
 
First, the Rush took on the Wild. While their play still seemed a little disorganized, it was definitely an improvement over their first game. They ended up taking the victory 5-3, although they outshot their opponents by a landslide.
 
Next, we saw the Rush go up against the Lynx. Once again, a definite improvement. The Rush were passing much better and their play seemed to be a lot more structured. This time they won 2-1 with both goals coming in the second period. 
 
Finally, we saw sheer domination by the Rush in the game against the Blades. This is more like the team we were all expecting to see after the draft. This one ended 8-1 for the Rush. 
 
If the Rush continue to improve their gameplay at the rate at which they have been this week, they will without a doubt be a team to keep a very close eye on as the season progresses. 

I'm just saying you'll be able to regain that TPE + more with VHLM bonuses.

You gotta agree that a goalie starting over 180 TPE in the minors is a pretty big advantage and turn off for new guys with 10.

181: The Power of the First Gens
 
The power of first generation members and their players is off the charts in recent seasons. Recruitment throughout league history can be labeled as spotty at best, but recently we have hit a significant upswing. When one first generation player joins the league it may seem intimidating, there are a lot of boards and sub boards as well as recreates who are starting with upwards of seventy-five carryover TPE. If at any given point there are two, three or even more new players being created it is far less intimidating I think because you have someone to compare to yourself and it might be less intimidating to ask a question that you think might be perceived as dumb (it won’t be, we all know how confusing a sim league can be for the first time).
 
Just looking at the most recent VHL Entry Draft there were a lot of new faces and first gen players. Most of these guys have integrated themselves into all kinds of forum discussions, which is great and it might have something to do with them being more comfortable due to all the other new guys who joined around the same time who are now posting with them. Personally when I joined the league I posted my point task, in my VHLM game threads and in my team locker room. I lurked the rest of the boards for a long time before I felt comfortable posting for some reason. So it is great to see these new members take such initiative so quickly and I encourage all new members to get involved in any discussion that interests them, it makes the league way more fun!
 
As I said at the beginning of this article, the power of first generation members and their players has come a long way. First gen players are picking up tons of awards in the VHLM and VHL now and are making players on par with or better than those people that started with the intimidating carryover TPE. Look at STZ and Green as first gens that are getting close to the end of their first players, they both weren’t at the top of their draft class TPE, but are far away two of the best players, and users, in the VHL. Then we have guys like AwfulHomesick and RandomHero who are poised to be some of the next big first gen players.
 
It’s not all about how a player performs or TPE count though and first gens are being given equal opportunity when it comes to job openings, especially for VHLM GM. I think this is a perfect match because they can easily remember what it was like when they first joined the league and can now guide and help the newer members to follow their successful early footsteps in the VHL. First gen users like fever95 and d3vilsfire have also been given great opportunities to relocate VHLM teams and choose the team’s new name, which is actually a rare feat even in the minor league. In other words trust in these first gen players is high, and it should be because they are highly motivated to prove themselves and are doing a damn good job of it.
 
Of course changes to the VHLM are helping in the transition for these new members. Things like the VHLM Training Camp are yet to be tested over time, but hopefully it will motivate people to stick around and do point tasks or claim welfare and participate in discussions. Everyone knows how important the VHLM is, especially during the first 24 hours after a new member joins us. There has been a lot of brainstorming, with old and new members alike, and we are bound to see more changes to the VHLM and for first generation players in the coming seasons and I look forward to it.

The year is Season 29 and the Oslo Storm win the Founder's Cup under general manager Higgins. Right after winning Higgins finds himself being promoted to take over the Helsinki Titans as their newest general manager. Higgins recreates early in the season and his player Mitch Higgins is traded from Helsinki to Seattle as a rental to play alongside Noah and Greg. Higgins makes a new player, Tuomas Tukio, who winds up playing for the Kolari Panthers in the VHLM.
 
The year is Season 36 and the Bratislava Watchmen win the Founder's Cup under general manager STZ. Right after winning STZ finds himself being promoted to take over the Helsinki Titans as their newest general manager. STZ recreates early in the season and his player Ethan Osborne is traded from Helsinki to Seattle as a rental to play alongside Noah and Greg. STZ makes a new player, Jake Wylde, who winds up playing for the Turku Outlaws (relocated from Kolari Panthers) in the VHLM.

Early Life/Minor Hockey
    Stratford, Ontario. Donald Francis Draper was born to his parents, Richard and Betty, on March 8th 1994. Stratford was a small and tight-knit community, located about 2 hours outside of Toronto. It was one of those places where if one neighbor knew, you can be sure the rest would know in time. Don’s father was an executive at a major advertising firm in the city and subsequently spent a lot of time away from home. For the majority of his childhood, it was just Don and his mother at their home in Stratford.

Around the age of six, Don’s mother decided it was time he started getting some physical activity instead of sitting around all day and, much to Don’s dismay, enrolled him in the local hockey league. Bearing the jersey of the novice league Stratford Snipers, this is where Donald Draper laid the very foundation of his abilities. Although Don’s initial choice to enter the world of hockey was one that was made for him, he quickly began to enjoy the sport. By the time he got to Atom, Don was standing out from the other kids. He was known for his quick feet and beautiful skating. Unfortunately, Don was cut in the last round at Atom AAA tryouts because he didn’t seem to have a particular knack for scoring. However, looking back on that moment, Don says it was quite possibly the best thing that ever happened to his career.
 
After getting cut, Don went to the Atom AA tryouts. It was here where he met the coach that he claims made him the player he is today; Coach Marty Daniels. It was him who was the first one to suggest to Don that he try playing defense. Don was, at first, a little hesitant but decided that he would keep an open mind about it. After doing some practices with the defense coach and playing a couple games, Don was sold on defense. He was perfect. Fast enough to catch any opponent, quick enough with his hands and feet to shut down play after play, and, although there is no hitting in Atom, big and strong enough to get in front of people.
 
Juniors
 
After climbing through the ranks in minor hockey, Don was playing Junior A hockey. He was 18 and had only a few months left of school. He never really excelled in school and, although he never explicitly said it, Don’s parents knew he had no interest in university. It was in April that he received the call he had been hoping for. An OHL team, the Ottawa 67’s, had taken an interest in him. Despite being very wealthy, Don’s father wanted him to learn what it was like living on his own without him doing it for him. So, instead of giving Don the financial support he needed to go to Ottawa, he set Don up with a low-paying day job at one of his firm’s sister companies based in Ottawa. It wasn’t uncommon for Don to have to go straight from work to the rink, or straight to the bus station to travel wherever they were playing that night.

Don had a very successful stint during his tenure with the 67’s. He emerged quickly as one of the top defenceman in the league and was subsequently rewarded with a position on the starting defensive pairing and an ‘A’ on his jersey.

After two highly successful years in the OHL, Don’s agent told him he was sure he’d be picked up in the top ten in the NHL entry draft. However, when Don called his father to tell him the news, suggested a different path. Richard Draper’s advertising firm had done a lot of contract work for the VHL in the past. As a result, Richard was very close with VHL commissioner Mitch Higgins. After talking to Higgins, Richard assured Don that he would have a much better career playing in the VHL. After making the decision, Donald Draper was drafted 10th overall in the VHLM dispersal draft to the Yukon Rush.
 

 
Pros
 
Leadership: Don has picked up many of his father’s personality traits that have shaped him into a natural born leader. His stern yet supportive attitude and personality demand nothing but respect. His teammates describe Don as someone who has a “way with words” because of his ability to, however grim the circumstances, rally the team and ensure every single player steps onto the ice with their head held high.
 
Checking: Don is very athletic and strong. Many observers in the OHL have compared Draper to the likes of Scott Stevens for the crushing hits he has delivered on guys coming down on him. Additionally, his speed and agility make him the “perfect storm” to sneak up on unsuspecting opponents and lay them out. Don also knows how to deliver a “clean” hit perfectly; hardly ever taking penalties on his hits.
 
Skating: Don has an immense amount of speed in his all-powerful stride. In the OHL, he’s been known to catch up to even the fastest of forwards. Often times, Don can be seen using his speed in the defensive zone to set up a perfect outlet pass to one of his counterparts on forward. He takes advantage of his speed wherever he can.
 
Cons
 
Scoring: Despite having a big shot on the point, Don has never been known for his offensive abilities. Typically when he gets on the point, unless he’s sure he has a clear shot, he will either look for a partner pass or feed it in to one of the forwards. Ever since his coach in Atom told him he didn't have the knack for scoring, he’s been focused on defense. His coaches have tried to convince him to start taking some chances and he’s been working to improve his scoring by spending some quality time with the offensive coach.
 
Puck Handling: Sometimes Draper’s feet get a little bit ahead of the rest of his body. He often has trouble holding onto the puck when he gets going fast and as a result he has caused a few turn overs. He needs to take his time, control his speed, and focus on where the puck is on his stick. He has been working on his stick handling a lot, however, and hopes to continue to improve.
 
Temper: Don hasn't always been known to have the coolest of heads. Throughout his career in the OHL, Don often let the other team get in his head and took silly penalties as a result. Additionally, he has received more than a few misconducts for chirping referees after an unfavorable call. After he received his ‘A’ on the 67’s, we noticed a sharp decline the Draper’s PIMS so hopefully he will continue to stay cool.
