The Jake Wylde Trophy, on the other hand, is an award recognizing the best defensive defenseman in the league, a truly thankless and overlooked role in the VHL. However, this season we've got six finalists staking claim for the Wylde! The aptly-named L @gorlab contributed 244 hits, along with 164 shots blocked and a +13. Alex Letang @Spartan racked up 264 hits, blocking 139 shots and tallying a +21 rating. Randy Marsh @oilmandan was a dominant physical presence, racking up 312 hits and blocking 162 shots, and recording a +21 rating. Robin Galante Nilsson @RomanesEuntDomus tallied 153 hits, but was seemingly a magnet for the puck, blocking an unhealthy 229 shots and recording a -23 rating. Cowboy Prout @Prout tallied 168 hits, blocked 189 shots, and recorded the second best +/- in the VHL with a +29. Lastly, General Zod @Matt_O recorded 282 hits and 140 blocked shots, with a -3 rating on the season.

Who made the biggest mark in their own zone this season? The winner of the Season 78 Jake Wylde Trophy is...

I've been having crap going on all day and had a lot of time to reflect on... a lot. I reflected a lot on many things, my past, my present, my future, if I would even have a future. It was kinda deep, but one thing a really epic doctor told me today is to take life seriously.

I know, a weird opening, a little backstory for y'all. I've been dealing with GERD for the majority of my life, it's a horrendous disease that makes a lot intolerable. I can't eat my favorite food, I can't drink my favorite drinks, I can't even take long car rides or be out super long because it affects my ability to use the restroom and so... I fear even having to be out for a long period of time or getting to enjoy myself. This GERD has pretty much taken over my life and so I began to take PPI's to subside the bullshit, hopefully put an end to it all, and it did, for a little while. I began to get to eat some foods, I began to get to drink some drinks, I could tolerate even going out little by little a bit longer. But then it all hit the fan. Pain began to take over my back, my chest, my lower abdomen, I was worse than I was prior.

Long story short, the PPI's fucked me, and I didn't even know that it could hurt my liver and kidney, but alas... here I am, in some real rough shape. \

What this has taught me, being asked questions I never thought I'd be asked and contemplating if my future even exists, is that life is too short. If we've ever fought here, bickered, gotten into it... honestly, let's squash it. I would hate for something to happen to me down the road and it happen with a guilty conscious of all the things that could've been mended over some stupid bullshit in a fake league when I could much rather be happier making real connections with people here.

Honestly though y'all, god bless ❤️ I'm gonna be around as long as fuckin' possible and I'm gonna make sure to let my liver and kidney know... we're gonna be okay. Like I said above, please reach out to me if we've ever beefed, if we've ever fucked around and things got heated, let's squash it. I'm not down for anymore bullshit, I'm too tired for it ❤️

    1. At the Half way point through the season! Where do you think Miami will finish this season? Probably last? A bad goalie sure doesn’t help

    2. How confident are you that Miami will be a playoff team next season? Hell ya. Make our reservations right now. That cup is ours

    3. Which VHL team drafted you? If undrafted which team would you like to go to if you could decide? Seattle has a great franchise and foundation. They’ve gotta be number one. Prague or Helsinki would be 2 and 3. I’d be happy in 7 or 8 places. Just a few that I will not go to

    4. Who has been the teams MVP half way through the season!? Whoever Bek’s goalie is. Probably has lapped us all 4 or 5 times in tpe

    get to know you questions.

    5. Favourite city you’ve visited? Not really a city, but Banff national park or kananaskis. Most beautiful places on earth

    6. Waffles or Pancakes? Waffles. They just seem fancier

    Nighthawks Among League Leaders

After a surprising S77 that saw the Malmo Nighthawks sneak into the play-in round of the playoffs, many analysts suggested that success was a fluke and would not do as well in S78 after the mid-season trades of Chris Hylands and Marshall James Frostbeard. Well, a third of the way into the season and Malmo is again in a play-in spot as they fight for the 5th seed in the European Conference. While the Nighthawks have been receiving contributions from a determined roster, there are a few players who have been leading the league or near the top of numerous statistical categories.

In a somewhat surprising off-season move, Warsaw shipped breakout winger Muffbeav to Malmo for picks and the American has made himself at home in Sweden. Up until recently being overtaken by Chicago’s Lee Xin, Muffbeav had been leading the VHL in goals for much of the season and is still second with 21 goals through 25 games – four off his career-high of 25 he scored last season. He is also leading the league in shots by a decent margin with 218. His 38 points has him tied for fourth in scoring and has been the dominant replacement for Hylands that Malmo was hoping for. He is also among leaders for power play goals with 6 and a career-high 4 game winners.

At the top of the VHL hit list (giving not taking) is the snarl to Muffbeav’s snipe, first-year captain, Druss Deathwalker. It’s no secret what Deathwalker’s desire is – to win and to hit. And he’s been doing a lot of hitting. After finishing 7th in the league in hits in S77, Malmo’s captain has been leading the league in hits for much of the season and currently has 120 which puts him on pace for 345. He faces stiff competition from Riga’s Addison McLaren, but he’s never been one to shy away from a rival. He’s also among league leader in – not surprisingly – penalty minutes with 75.

His teammate and rugged defender Randy Marsh is currently second in the league in that category, his 103 penalty minutes only 4 of off the leader, LA’s Ove Dyrdahl. Marsh is every bit as gritty as Deathwalker and is also on the leaderboards for hits with 104 and shots blocked with 67 but has provided a fair bit of offense as well with 26 points and a plus-11.

Other Nighthawks who are among the leaders of the VHL are veteran defenseman Viktor Alexei Kamenov who has been jockeying for the blocked shots lead with Calgary’s Cowboy Prout and New York’s Kosmo Kramerev all season but is currently in third with 76. Sophomore winger Brendan Telker is also high on the shots leaderboard with 185. Rookie blueliner Tui Sova who was selected in the first round of the S78 draft has slowly been climbing the rookie scoring ladder with 11 points. Center Kevin Sterk is leading the Nighthawks in plus/minus with a plus-12 which is tied for 5th and also has a hat trick. Starting goalie Artem Tretiak has been a rock between the pipes in spite of facing a barrage of rubber many nights. He is second among starters with a sparkling 0.930 save percentage and is also in the top half of starters with a 3.04 GAA.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to watch whether Malmo can stay in the playoff race. With these players leading the way and the other Nighthawks laying it on the line every night, that shouldn’t be a problem.
