    One Continental Cup (S75)

There was something inevitable about the consensus 1st overall pick Condor Adrienne in S68, as everyone could see it was back to @OrbitingDeath  at his best. And yet, his ascent to greatness wasn't immediate. A surprise run to the finals in his rookie season, a Wylde Trophy in his 3rd, it wasn't quite a rapid start. But then, as Malmo went into a rebuild, Adrienne became their shining light. Even when he became the first defenceman to lead the league in scoring in nearly 60 seasons, his Hall of Fame case wasn't secure, but between then and winning the cup with Malmo in his last game, Adrienne dominated the defencemen field to such an extent that there remained no doubt. A selection of accolades reads as follows:

    Most Valiq Trophies
    Most Wylde Trophies
1st Player to win Labatte, Wylde, and Valiq in same season
2nd Defenceman to lead the VHL in scoring (1st since S14)

He's the best defenceman we've seen in over 20 seasons, if not longer, and it will take a while for another to match him. Except, one didn't fall far behind even when competing against him....

    3x All-VHL First Team (S71, S72, S73)
    1x All-VHL Second Team (S74)
    One Continental Cup (S72)

You're not going to look as good on the same page as Adrienne, but few players could rightly consider themselves pretty much equals as much as Lincoln Tate. There's a lot of similarities - fellow 1st overall picks, far from plain sailing at the start, one-team men. I was a bit surprised to see Riga go for @Tate after their big trade to get 1st overall and for a while, it seemed like a rare misfire for the GM. Not in terms of TPE, but in terms of performance Tate did not seem to stand out. Like Adrienne though, as soon as he crossed the halfway mark of his career, Tate transformed into one of the elite defencemen. Between S71 and S75, they took home all the Labatte Trophies. Tate also led his team to the cup as well, part of one of the all-time great defensive units in VHL history, having been an instrumental part of Riga's record-setting 13-season playoff streak (it ended immediately after Tate's retirement).

It is fitting that the two defencemen that dominated their generation will forever be remembered together through this HOF induction.

And as usual, we are not quite done here as we have a Builder to announce! This one I am particularly pleased to announce as I have been something of this man's cheerleader for half a decade now. As a little-known first-gen Shane Baker, I brought him to Davos and he formed a defensive partnership with my own player that went to 3 straight finals and won 2 cups. I have then continued to hype up his players of increasing quality - Severin von Karma, Hall of Fame goalie Apollo Skye, Veran Dragomir, and most recently Soren Jensen. But it's not just about players for @Velevra  who over the course of these careers has earned an astronomical amount of TPE by being one of our most reliable updates, from manual labour to the present Portal-driven days. Even more importantly, prior to the implementation of the Portal and its connection to the sim, Velevra was the one who manually updated attributes for players in the sim which as you can imagine is a highly unpleasant task and took a massive workload off the simmers who previously did this themselves. Through it all, Velevra has maintained a quiet profile, happy to get on with his job with little to no recognition. Well now we are recognising him as best we can, immortalising Velevra as VHL Builder.

    Congratulations @OrbitingDeath  @Tate and @Velevra !

Jolly Greene Giant recently showed up to the Toronto Legion Press Conference with a noticeable difference. This was the first time the world had seen him since the Draft Lottery Tournament, and fans were shocked to see that he has, for the time being, dyed his body purple. "Ho ho ho," says the Giant, and he's right. The purple does really make him stand out, but fans aren't impressed. Toronto fans around the world have been using #FreeTheGreen to convince the Giant to return to his natural color. "The purple looks nice, but he's supposed to be green! This isn't what I was promised," says one fan. Fans of Toronto had taken to the pairing of the Giant and Lester Green as the Green Gang, something that the Legion has been quick to capitalize on for merchandise. The T-shirts have adorned many a fan at recent Toronto games. We will keep you posted as to what the Giant decides to do.

    That Great Draft Feeling!
Most of you have had this experience. Your first season is usually over and now you are excited which team will draft you.  At first comes one interview, then second, third and sometimes more. I think, I´ve answered to four interviews. You did your best in responses and then you can enjoy every moment, every second with which is draft nearer and nearer. And it is finally here!  Probably you have seen the draft to some huge and famous league. If yes, you can imagine that entire atmosphere. Big hall with podium at the beginning and with many tables for GMs and chairs for players and their relatives. You can imagine how it could be with you on their place. Because you are there! You are sitting on the chair and watching twitch with draft stream! The last year, when the draft was heled virtually because of pandemic the atmosphere has been similar. In my case, it was little bit differenced. However, as I´ve said only little bit. As you maybe know, I am from Slovakia and I was in my home country, while draft.  If I could be on the draft at the time, I would have to get up at 3:000 AM. At first, I wanted to get up and watch it, but after quickly consultation with my organism, I stayed at the bed and looked at the results in the morning. But it couldn’t stop me to be happy about all of this! They have drafted you to the VHL! Your game dream became a reality! What is more? I have sprinted to the living room. I opened it and scrolled the site down. First round has been without my name, second the same. The third… yeah I am there 34th overall by LA stars. It is here, the VHL future goalie legend has been drafted to the league, as well.

However, go back to the draft feeling. To be sincere, I was little bit disappointed with the result. The prognoses has told about late second round for my player. But I´ve been selected by LA in the third! Ok, the team is great. There is no reason to do not like the teammates and managers there, but the third round was not success for me, when according charts I could be higher.

And the second and shorter part of the text is my note to everyone, who is going to be drafted this year. Because the charts are one thing, the kind of player that is needed in concretely team second one, the interviews third and selection the fourth. Do not be disappointed if you will be lower than expected. Be happy, that you are part of the great community, enjoy every moment of the draft, if you are not going to retire sooner than it is need, you will be able to be in the draft after 8 seasons and that is too long time. I was been drafted lower, but does it matter? Nope! You could win the cup with each team, you could meet the best teammates in each team and in the worst case, you can be traded. So good luck to everyone who is in draft age!

    ENJOY IT!!

    FORWARDS

    (S73) Oh Sens | RW | @osens
    Signed through S78
    600 TPE (Current)
    630 TPA (S77 Proj. Start)

With the departure of Merrick earlier this season Oh Sens became the Legions top rated forward, although he hasn't seen any development since February 14th when Osens claimed welfare, answered the trivia correctly and participated in the Legions' inconsistent press conferences. Despite loosing two offensive leaders early in the season, Sens maintained his quality play and produced seventy four points for his team, leading the way offensively with thirty eight goals and five game winning tallies. Had he scored just one more goal he would have hit a career milestone, the big '100', with all but four of them in a Legion uniform.

Sens will likely continue to anchor the Legions' offense for the foreseeable future, and I very much expect him to produce seventy two points or greater in S77, but I know I must get him some support in order to improve the Legions' offensive game. Toronto cannot rely on Sens to score the majority of our goals, and while Sunderbruch put up a solid effort with twenty himself, there needs to be less of a discrepancy between the leading goal scorer and the runner up. Eighteen goals between the two is unfortunate, but not irreparable.

    (S72) Ziarie Anigbogu | RW | @ngine4
    Signed through S77
    582 TPE (Current)
    520 TPA (S77 Proj. Start)

Anigbogu is our only regressing player among our forward group, but due to the significantly lower TPE compared to others... he's honestly not regressed that much. About two minutes before the trade deadline passed the decision was made to move Ziarie from his blueline perch in order to help the Legions' struggling offensive effort, an issue that was identified around the trade deadline as something we needed to improve upon. Instead of acquiring a forward and giving up assets the Legion wanted to keep (London's first) Anigbogu displayed a team first attitude and swapped to an unfamiliar position. With the one and done career swap to forward complete the Legion proceeded to go 6-6-1 in his short stint at forward.

The position swap worked, though, and in his thirteen games as a forward Anigbogu registered seven goals, four assists and eleven points. The immediate improvement to the forward core stopped some of the bleeding and stabilized the roster, forcing most games into a one goal conclusion. All but two of the losses after Anigbogu made the swap were more than one goal, which is very clearly not something the Legion could state earlier in the season. I anticipate around a point-per-game for Anigbogu with a full season as a forward, and I'm eagerly awaiting the start of S77.

    (S74) Nicholas Sunderbruch | LW | @NickSunderbruch
    Signed through S79
    428 TPE (Current)
    450 TPE (S77 Proj. Start)

The departure of Merrick and Strauss impacted Sunderbruch negatively, unlike Sens above, and could partially be correlated to the wingers decreased development as the season progressed. What started out as a promising and steady development for the next 'face of the franchise', it has sadly been hit by what I assume is a comparatively disappointing sophomore season than the exciting rookie campaign Nicholas had. He went from just over a point-per-game rookie campaign with more productivity to... a fifty point sophomore campaign where he struggled to score goals and couldn't find any hot streaks. I imagine that is a difficult obstacle to overcome, but I have more than enough faith that Sunderbruch (and his user) will rebound in season seventy seven.

Sunderbruch may not be the next face of the franchise, but he is without a doubt a key piece to the future successes of Toronto. The ultimate goal is to get everyone on this team a ring to enjoy and their name on the Continental Cup, and Nicholas is capable of helping that dream along.

    (S76) Gunnar Odinsson | RW | @BOOM
    Signed through S78
    426 TPE (Current)
    480 TPE (S77 Proj. Start)

Gunnar Odinsson was traded from Helsinki to the Legion midway through the S76 season, and in his thirty eight games wearing a Legion uniform -- after reconsidering his desire to be a defensemen and moving over to the right wing after the trade was completed -- he managed to register twenty five points and surprisingly a plus one. He scored eleven goals and added fourteen helpers, but what this represents is a building block for all of Toronto's future considerations. He and Funk Jr are the only active 'prospects' the team has, as the older players are leaving their rookie contracts or have fallen out of the realm of reliable activity. Odinsson will be heavily relied upon as he surges ahead on the depth chart, improving himself and the team as he does so, and may very well end up as a key contributor to Toronto's offense.

I'm anticipating a two-way battle between Sunderbruch and Odinsson regarding the goal scoring runner up, but Odinsson's steadily development gives him the clear advantage at this time. I wouldn't be surprised if the Legion goal scorers went Sens, Odinsson, Sunderbruch. If it does, I hope they all get thirty goals!

    (S74) Wolf Weiss | C | @Matmenzinger
    Signed through S79
    407 TPE (Current)
    425 TPE (S77 Proj. Start)

Weiss has been an amazing depth piece for Toronto, and I reckon that's something every team needs; his development isn't impressive by any stretch of the imagination, but the growth is fairly consistent and from a long-term perspective it means he won't be a massive cap hit when he starts to regress. Weiss is currently serving as the Legions' top line center, although he struggled with the increased ice-time and tougher opponents than his rookie campaign. Similar to Sunderbruch, Weiss was negatively impacted by the departure of Merrick and Strauss. With a little more development and a comfortable spot as the teams second line C, Weiss could rise again to meet and perhaps surpass his rookie performance.

The key here is to keep Weiss out of the areas he'll struggle with and let him play to his strengths. He is capable of twenty goals and thirty assists as the 2C, it is my job to make sure those strengths are something the Legions' offense can exploit in the upcoming season.

    (S76) Frank Funk Jr | LW | @Rayzor_7
    Signed through S78
    367 TPE (Current)
    410 TPE (S77 Proj. Start)

It was a rough rookie campaign, I think we can both acknowledge that, but Frank Junk Jr was one of the more versatile players the Legion had. His points may not show the role he played, but the lineup history does. Wolf Weiss and Frank Funk Jr played a game of hot potato with one another in regards to who was the teams first line center. For some sims it was Weiss, while others it was Funk Jr as one or the other struggled to find any form of chemistry with the teams dedicated wingers. In a perfect world Frank Funk Jr goes back to the wing and plays his natural position, something I hope I can give him for his sophomore season by acquiring or signing a center to play as the Legions' top C.

Frank Funk Jr only has one way to go... and that's up. He may not sky rocket into a point per game pace like others have shown in their sophomore seasons, but he'll certainly improve upon his rookie campaign. Steady development will help Funk Jr reach distant heights.

    (S75) John Callahan Jr | LW | @Callahan
    Signed through S77
    331 TPE (Current)
    331 TPE (S77 Proj. Future)

John Callahan Jr's development has ceased partially due to real-life priorities shifting for the user, whom has perhaps one of the more interesting jobs I've heard about in the locker room, but it does unfortunately signal that the player is likely going to become stagnant. Without any true development the only possibilities of John improving is upon the backs of his teammates, although it is entirely possible he begins to improve as those priorities shift and allow more free time to translate into VHL activity.

I'm writing this is with a present look at the future... so, unfortunately, I have to write it as I see it. Callahan hasn't signed in since the 19th and has been absent from the Discord since the 13th.

    DEFENSE

    (S74) Lester Green | D | @Smarch
    Signed through S78
    614 TPE (Current)
    650 TPE (S77 Proj. Future)

It has been said numerous times that Green's addition to the locker room essentially revitalized the atmosphere, energized the team and contributed into the Legion cultivating a winning attitude even though the mental disappointment of numerous losses can weigh down even the brightest of stars. Not only is Green a key contributor in the LR, he's also a key piece of Toronto moving forward, and desires to repeat an era of Toronto long in the past. Green is a reliable defensive defensemen that I used in every situation that needed an iron pillar, so I'm beyond thankful that the team is growing around this awesome individual.

Similar to Frank Funk Jr, I strongly believe Green only has one direction. You can say up, or forward, it really doesn't matter because it implies the same thing... doesn't it? Improvement from Green is inevitable as his defensive partners improve around him, Toronto's offense grows more proficient and the teams morale continues to climb.

    (S75) Scotty Kaberle | D | @fromtheinside
    (Signed through S77)
    530 TPE (Current)
    570 TPE (S77. Proj. Start)

I know I didn't get Kaberle the rookie season he wanted, but I'm hoping the future of this club excites him just as much as it excites me, and I guarantee you I'm absolutely vibrating with anticipation. Kaberle was hoping for a sixty point rookie season, and although he fell quite short of that mark, I'd argue that his forty eight points -- good for top defensemen on the Legion this year -- was an accomplishment considering the offensive struggles Toronto had throughout his first foray into the Victory Hockey League. I'll be honest here, it was very difficult managing five active defenders throughout the season and trying to get them all performing within enjoyable margins, but it certainly got easier at the trade deadline.

For Kaberle's future, though, he and Welch will create a defensive pairing that forms a citadel alongside Green and... Greene.

    (S75) Jolly Greene Giant | D | @DoktorFunk
    Signed through S77
    518 TPE
    560 TPE (S77. Proj. Start)

Jolly Green Giant was acquired in a trade that still represents Toronto's (hopeful) tactical advance from mediocrity, I saw an avenue of improvement similar to what Seattle did for their strong S67 core and I took a swing for myself by selecting Giant at second overall and sending away that mediocre core to London. Despite all that, I hope Giant doesn't feel he is forced to shoulder that hope by himself, he's a key member of this team and a growing presence on our blueline. Although his last name is Giant, he's been colloquially referred to as Greene since his defensive partner arrived in Toronto. Oh, and Giant had a decent rookie season as well. He was the second highest scoring defensemen on Toronto, just four points behind Kaberle, and will likely contribute more in the following season as the entire team improves.

The Green-Greene pairing is now dubbed the 'EAT YOUR GREENS' line and plays together at every key moment of the game, and will continue to do so moving forward.

    (S76) Kristof Welch | D | @Juice
    Signed through S78
    372 TPE (Current)
    420 TPE (S77 Proj. Start)

Ah, yes, the fifth overall selection in the S76 VHL Entry Draft. What can I say about Welch's involvement with the team? Oh... plenty I'm sure, but I find it is impossible to create a list of things when you enjoy everything about a player and their user; 'the future is bright' doesn't do what I think of Juice justice. This first-generation VHL player has been a terrific addition to the Toronto Legion, and cements the whole 'tactical advance' thing from above quite nicely. With the team moving away from five active defenders, Kristof comfortably slots into a defensive pairing with Kaberle, something that I couldn't always guarantee throughout season seventy six. Welch had a decent rookie season as well, earning himself thirty four points and likely many bruises from his impressive amount of shots blocked.

The Kaberle-Welch pairing is now concrete. The two want to play together, and so they will.

DoktorFunk reacted to Fire Tortorella in The Terror of Welfare
There is absolutely 0 reason to feel bad about pressing the welfare button.

Imagine a VHL with no welfare - now you TRULY feel bad about not doing a point task week in and week out. This is one of the exact reasons welfare was added. The league recognized that "pedal to the metal" point tasking leads to burnout, burnout leads to anger, and anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering.

And to @Beketov's point about min-maxing TPE versus just clicking welfare - you can create a good to great player with just welfare and doing most, if not all, of the theme weeks. Take me for example. I've done welfare just about every week except for theme week and I did a builder HoF article. I'm somewhere around 10th in my draft class, but it's pretty close from 8th-12th-ish. However, with Smitty, I TPE whore'd my first 5 seasons or so and then was able to coast with half welfare, half point tasks.

While I'm going on, the ability to multi-claim longer articles has been another great addition to the league. Imagine writing a 1,500 word point task one week and then having to write another point task the next week.
  16. Haha
DoktorFunk reacted to Victor in The Terror of Welfare
Referring to welfare as the button does sounds pretty terrifying.

DoktorFunk reacted to Beketov in The Terror of Welfare
Honestly if you are doing everything else you are missing out in 2 TPE per week, that’s all. People focus on maxing out too much. It’s better to claim welfare every once in awhile than it is to burn out but people weirdly look at it as “welfare players and max earners” when there is very much an in between.

And even to that point a “welfare player” isn’t necessarily only a depth player. 9 seasons (so 1 in the M plus 8 in the VHL) equates to roughly 72 weeks five or take. So by taking welfare every single week but claiming the rest of the cap, over an entire career, you lose out on 144 TPE. That’s not the tiniest number in the world but when you consider that 1000+ is pretty easy now 144 TPE isn’t going to be the difference between a HoF beast and a depth player and that’s if you never claim a full week.

Now obviously that math has flaws, theme week for example you’d lose more than 2 but in any case. The point is the number over a whole career isn’t a huge deal and people shouldn’t feel bad about THAT button.

So @DoktorFunk realistically if it’s burn out or press the button every once in awhile please just press the button. We’ve all done it, that’s what it’s there for. Don’t ever feel like a failure because you don’t max earn every single week.

Its okay, to take a step back with activity. It may be good to do that rather than burning yourself out. Nothing at all to feel bad about Dok!!!

The crazy thing is a lot of people don't know you can still have a pretty good player by pressing it each week, you can't miss it too much though or you'll be a depth player for sure

My welfare button the first time I come to the site on Monday

But seriously people shouldn't feel shame in hitting the button.  We all have stuff going on in our lives (good and bad).  Based on my discord activity, I clearly have time to cap every week.  I choose not to because I would rather fill my time with things that I enjoy doing instead of writing or attempting to make graphics.  Not that I don't enjoy the league, but those specific things are not things I want to do.  It's actually a little crazy to me the when people get stressed about capping because they are suddenly busy that week or just don't feel like doing something.  Whether you get busy or just aren't feeling it that week just smash that button, that's what it's for and just move on with your week and don't worry about it.
  21. Cheers

I love you, Dok. Don’t be afraid to push that button. There’s nothing wrong with the VHL sharing moments and time in our lives with other great things. This league should be an enjoyable hobby much like other things we enjoy.  I am similar.. I’ve been a normal employee, to a foreman, to a supervisor in the time frame of being the Bears GM (maybe a tiny bit before being hired).

Life is challenging but rewarding. Life overall is good and I’m glad it is for you too. Keep kicking ass man!

So I'm in a bit of a weird place. Everything around me is taking up my time, but I still desperately want to be here. The rational voice in my head is saying that, in order to justify both, I might have to be something less than a max earner in order to allow myself the time. Or carve out time at work to write my stuff (like I'm doing now, but that's not super sustainable) because work is a boring fucking mess for the first quarter of the year.

The temptation of clicking THAT button, though... is absolutely there. The only thing that stops me most times is the fact that people are usually nice enough to invite me to participate in their activities. But, when I can't be bothered, I want desperately to claim welfare. It's an interesting thing that it does to my brain because it actually makes me mad at myself whenever I actually go through with it! Years and years of optimization in video games and table top games makes me loathe even the thought of not wringing out every little bit of experience from every situation that I'm in!

It's not even that the league takes that much time to do most of this stuff. A lot of the time I can have all my point tasks done in about 15-30 minutes. But, it's STILL a huge temptation to actually use that damn Welfare. More time I could be spending playing games, reading, playing music, studying a language, running, lifting, etc. It just feels, fundamentally, that Welfare is an admission of defeat. That I don't have or I'm not willing to commit the time to this site that I used to. I regret that I'm not more active in the discords. I think Welfare scares me because it holds a mirror up to myself.

I started on this site because I was moving to a new city and starting a new job. I needed something to fill the boredom gap. And I have had a ton of fun and spoken with some amazing people. Now, I'm in the most successful period of my life I've ever experienced, and it's hard to admit that MAYBE that void in my life is just not filled by this site anymore. Maybe I've found some things that I'd rather be doing. Should I still be ashamed of using Welfare? No, I don't particularly think so. But clicking it every week just makes me feel sad. So I hold out on doing it, but I'm sure a day will come where I finally admit the truth that my life is better than it was, and sometimes its okay to just enjoy it. Take it easy. Relax. Have fun.

Calm down, I'm not leaving. I just need to reevaluate what I do on here and whether that's really worth the time and energy I put into it. And I need to remember that TPE DOESN'T MATTER and I can still be great even on Welfare.
