Minnesota Storm S67 VHLM Draft Recap

This past draft was seen as a huge success by Minnesota Storm GM @Rayzor_7 and Assistant GM @DMaximus. Not only did the Storm have four picks in the first two rounds including the coveted 1st overall pick previously acquired from the Houston Bulls, they made seven other selections in rounds 4-7 for a total of 11 new prospects. The Storm drafted four right wingers, three defensemen, two left wingers and two goalies from eight different countries. These new faces will go a long way to bringing the Storm back into the contender discussion. Along with the post-draft signing of RW Killy Foilen, the management team should be feeling pretty good about their off-season.

GM Rayzor_7 said after the draft: “I think all in all the draft went really well for the Storm. We picked up some really strong players with every one of our picks as well as getting some value by trading out of some rounds.” He also gave credit to Assistant GM DMaximus saying, “He was a big help to me during the draft… with the scouting and selecting of players.”

Assistant GM DMaximus, in turn, gave koodos to the GM for his ability to “wheel and deal” as he made a “ton of moves to accumulate draft picks” including the #1 overall.

Here’s how the Storm’s haul looked after it was all said and done...

    Round 1

    1.  MINNESOTA STORM (from Houston Bulls): LW - Berocka Sundqvist, Australia
Arguably the best winger available at the draft, Sundqvist have scouts drooling at his combination of size, skill, and speed. One of the most polished prospects available, Sundqvist is also considered the most VHLM-ready, having already played a season as a free agent. One of the top players not playing in the VHL, the Aussie is an offensive force and DMaximus believes is talented enough to lead the Storm to the Cup.

    8.  MINNESOTA STORM (from Saskatoon Wild): D - Danny DeYeeto, Niger
This little-known behemoth defenseman from the wilds of Niger impressed scouts with his skating ability and acumen in his own zone. At 6’ 8”, he puts fear into the heart of opposing players (and sometimes his own teammates and will do anything to protect his end of the ice. While early on considered a loose cannon with no offensive upside, his passing seems to have improved and he may develop into a two-way threat.

    Round 2

    15.  MINNESOTA STORM : G - Stanley Sawchuk, Canada
The monster netminder from Canada was the second goalie selected in the draft. Size is not an issue for the Canadian, as he is as tall as new teammate, Danny DeYeeto, standing 6’ 8” and coming in at a whopping 250 pounds! Although he is surprisingly agile, mobility and puck control are areas that will need working on and he’ll have plenty of time for that as he probably won’t see much playing time behind defacto starter, Justin Cole.

    21.  MINNESOTA STORM (from Ottawa Lynx): D - Hugh Chan, Hong Kong
Hugh Chan is from Hong Kong and was discovered by a Canadian scout who encouraged him to come to North America. It seems to have been the right move as he developed into one of the highest-rated prospects in the draft. DMaximus said after the pick that he was surprised the slick puck-moving defenseman dropped so far. He may be slightly-built for today’s VHL but he makes up for it in speed, hockey sense, and passing, and is also quite good in his own zone. Minnesota thinks they got a steal here.

    Round 3

    No picks.

    Round 4

    37.  MINNESOTA STORM : RW - Mac Hooper, UK
Despite his size (only 5’ 8” and weighing 150 pounds) and shortened development period, the Storm like what they see in the energetic winger. Here’s hoping he has enough skill and speed and can withstand the rigors of the VHLM. Works hard and is a deft passer and has good hockey sense.

    39.  MINNESOTA STORM (from Mississauga Hounds): RW - Ryo Yamazuki II, Japan
Another 6’ 8” player selected by the Storm, the Japanese giant has tantalizing physical tools and awe-inspiring skills. He can really move for a big man and stickhandle around defenders like pylons. His shot is hard and accurate which is helped by his huge frame. Many scouts peg him as one-dimensional and others question his attitude, largely attributed to his pampered upbringing. Can he work on his weaknesses enough so they don’t hinder his raw talent? Time will tell.

    Round 5

    49.  MINNESOTA STORM (from San Diego Marlins): D - Charles Drumm, Australia
The solid, rugged defender from down under is a stalwart in his own end and skates well for a man of his size. Considered a shot-blocking specialist, some wonder if there is any offense to his game. Was traded after the draft to the Las Vegas Aces.

    52.  MINNESOTA STORM (from Saskatoon Wild): RW - Jacob Rogers, USA
This American winger was considered a safe pick in this stage of the draft. Very strong and a hard worker, his key skills are a slick outlet pass and fantastic vision that allows him to move the puck deftly up the ice. He does everything else well but not great. Has a reputation as a good teammate and a positive influence in the locker room.

    Round 6

    66.  MINNESOTA STORM (from Philadelphia Reapers): G - Douglas Steel, USA
Steel is known for being a leader in the locker room and on the bench, which is where scouts predict he’ll start for now as he rounds out his game. He has good size at 6’ 2” and 220 pounds, so he fills a lot of net. But while he is good in most areas, his agility and puck control need work. Was traded shortly after the draft to the San Diego Marlins.

    Round 7

    68.  MINNESOTA STORM (from Las Vegas Aces): LW - Ondrej Ohradka, Slovakia
Little-known Ohradka had one of the best 18-year-old seasons in Slovakia Extraliga history before being snagged in the 7th round. The solidly-built yet shifty winger is looking to build on his success back home and become the next great Slovakian hockey export. He’s quik, has a sneaky wrist shot, plays with an edge and is already a solid two-way player. The tools are there but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few weaknesses in his game. He will need some time to adjust to the North American style of hockey.

    70.  MINNESOTA STORM: RW - Myles Angellus, Canada
This Canadian winger has good skating ability and is strong on the puck despite his slight frame but scouts wonder if that is enough to push him to the next level. The raw talent is there but he needs to get stronger and work on his overall game.

    Round 7

    OO7 Gets A Shot

Warm sunlight was just peeking through the curtains when Dukla Trencin winger, Ondrej Ohradka, woke up. He slid out of bed, adrenaline already pushing out the nighttime haze. He plopped down at his desk and woke up his laptop, the blue glare illuminating his spreading grin.

While he was sleeping, his life may have changed.

While he was dreaming, his dreams may have come true.

The VHLM had held it’s S67 draft that night (due to Slovakia’s time zone) and while he was late to declare himself eligible for the draft, he knew he had the skills to compete. He quickly clicked a browser open to check the draft tracker. He scrolled down. And down. 3rd round. 4th round. 5th round. 6th round.

His eyes widened and he sprung up when he saw himself picked in the 7th round at #68 by the Minnesota Storm. He flailed his fists in the air and hopped around but kept from yelling so as not to wake the rest of his family. Instead, he quickly dressed, grabbed a glass of orange juice and went for a run in the pleasantly cool Trencin morning. Barely anyone was in the streets to hear his whoops of joy.

After the run, he came back to his home to tell his rising family the fantastic news. A text arrived from his agent, former VHL defenseman, Gunnar-Rune Rorvik, who congratulated him and said he would make arrangements for a press conference later in the week. Ohradka called Rorvik quickly to discuss the press conference and then made plans with his friends and family for a small celebration the next day. Texts and phone calls dominated the next few hours as the Ohradka household buzzed with activity.  Ondrej also received a phone call from the Minnesota Storm welcoming him to the organization and making arrangements to have him fly to America to begin training camp.

That night, family members, friends, teammates and Dukla Trencin employees came over to their house to celebrate the talented winger being drafted. There was food, drink, karaoke, dancing and many Slovakian flags. The party-goers also used the time to say goodbye to their friend.

Two days later, Ohradka held a press conference in the home of HK Dukla Trencin, the Pavol Demitra Ice Hockey Stadium overlooking the Kockovsky Canal.

To start, the young winger read from a prepared statement:

"Thank you all for coming this afternoon. I have an announcement to make. Earlier this week in the VHLM draft, I was chosen by the Minnesota Storm in the 7th round, 68th overall. I chose to declare as eligible for this draft at the encouragement of my agent, Gunnar-Rune Rorvik, as he played in that league and suggested it would be a great step in my development as a professional hockey player. I appreciate everyone's support for my hockey career the last few years.

I would like to thank my family for their sacrifice and my teammates and coaches with Dukla Trencin for helping me get to this point and all the fans who have cheered me on in this arena.

I would also I like to think the Minnesota Storm organization for drafting me and believing in me and I look forward to growing as a player and helping the team win.

My career with Dukla Trencin is not over hopefully, but just on hold, as I hope to return to play here again some day.

Thank you again, I will now take any questions."

After an hour long question period, the press conference concluded and Ondrej Ohradka left to go pack.

This is the first step in the young man's career aspirations. One scout said this could be a steal for Minnesota. Time will tell if Ohradka's and Minnesota's dreams will come true.

What's up VHLM'ers? Playoffs are over, and so are the drafts, and we're offically gearing up for next season! Training camps are under way and teams are rounding out their lineups in preperation of pre-season. That begins on Monday, July 8th. The regular season will begin two days later on the 10th. Another season here and gone! They sure fly by. Let's get to it!

    1) Uncapped TPE Opportunities: Any time there's a one-off or once-a-season point task available to enter, you'll find out about it in the early headlines of the article.
    2) League Recap: The middle of the Newsletter is generally based around keeping you up to speed with what's going on around the league, be that changes to how the league works, new features or how the current VHLM season is progressing.
    3) TPE Earning Guide: The bottom section of the Newsletter follows the same format each week. There, you will be provided with the links you need to get to the regular TPE earning activities.

Before we start with anything I would like to remind you about the Official VHL Discord Server. The discord is a great place for you to connect with other members of the site and get help with anything you need! I would highly recommend joining and being apart of the community there. Like the last VHLM Newsletter, some of this newsletter will re-tread on the old ground as, with this being a VHLM newsletter, there will inevitably be new members reading this for the first time that won’t be aware of what was in previous newsletters. So what I’ll do is put a bold *NEW* next to any information specifically made for this newsletter so players who have read these before knowing where to go to find the new info!

    League Announcements

This will be a new section, with general league news (non-game related)  or threads of interest to VHLMers.

If you were drafted in this week's past VHL draft, and are a VHLMer, you're still elibigle for your respective team's training camp! Don't forget, you get 10 TPE! You just can't go over the cap. So if you have 194 TPE, you may claim 6. 190 or under? Claim the full ten! Check out the off-season schedule here to see what is happening next!

    Recruit a Friend TPE
Probably the best way to earn some uncapped TPE is to recruit a friend! You can receive some hefty uncapped TPE bonuses by recruiting a friend and helping them make a player! You can earn up to 15 Uncapped TPE from a single recruitment! For more information, click this link.

    Practice Facility
Every week, players in the VHLM are granted 2 free TPE every week for simply posting in the practice facility thread. If you haven't already, go post your player name and "+2" here.

    Career PT - Player Biography
Once per career, you can write a biography about your player for a whopping TEN uncapped TPE! The biography must be at least 1000 words in length while detailing the history of your player's life, starting off the ice and eventually working up toward it. A more specific rubric can be found on the page here. When claiming the TPE for this task, make sure you submit it under via portal as "Other" --> "Biography"

    Career PT - Rookie Profile
Once per career, you can write a rookie profile that specifically details your player's strengths and weaknesses on the ice. Think of this like a scouting report, where you're telling GMs what to expect out of your player. A more detailed rubric for the rookie profile can be found on this page. This report must be at least 500 words in length, and focus only on your player's on-ice attributes. When turning this task in, be sure to submit it under "Other" --> "Rookie Profile"

    The VHL Fantasy Zone
Every week, players are given the chance to guess the results of upcoming VHL games. This comes in two different forms- the weekly Pick 'Em's (which are worth 2 uncapped TPE for getting all of them correct), and the weekly Score Prediction (which is worth 3 uncapped TPE for getting correct). Even if you don't get it right, it's worth a shot to take a look at the games and give it your best guess! If you want, you can even cheat and copy the guesses of a member that's already posted. These will be posted in this subforum every week.

Player Store- First Generation Doubles Week
If you've got the money (1.5m in player store cash, the amount of every VHLM contract) you can purchase a doubles week if you're on your first player. For those who haven't had one before, a doubles week allows you to claim an extra 6 uncapped TPE if you submit a media spot, graphic, or podcast!

    The VHLM Fantasy Zone
The VHL Fantasy Zone's younger brother allows you to earn even more uncapped TPE for guessing the correct winners and scores. However, these predictions are only available to players within the VHLM, so make use of them while you can! The VHLM Fantasy Zone differs in its TPE rewards, in that the weekly Pick 'Em's are only worth 2 uncapped TPE, but guessing the correct score is worth 4! These will be posted in this subforum every week.

    The First Generation Bonus
As a thank you to the newer members for sticking around and participating in the league, we're offering 10 free uncapped TPE for your first player, once they cross the 100 TPE milestone! If you've passed that mark, or are about to pass that mark, make a post in this thread and use it to submit an update. To make the job of the updates easier, please select "Other" when applying the update and fill out the box as seen below:

    2) League Recap

The Reapers took out the Ottawa Lynx to win the championship! Congrats to Philly, as they had a dominating season and were very well deserving of their victory! A few drafts also took place a few days ago. The VHLM draft saw new players beginning their minor league careers and the VHL draft saw many VHLM alumni say goodbye to their minor league teammates, and hello to new ones in the bigs! Congrats to all who were selected.
