diacope 2 reacted to leafsman in A look at some Bears prospects
As I thought about what to write about for the theme week I figured why not learn about some future teammate careers by seeing how some bears prospects are doing so far.   With the major expansion needs next year who knows if Uhtred or any of these prospects will still be here next year but excited to get to know them if we are.

The bears currently have 4 prospects listed on the roster.  They are two season 71 prospects defensemen Bo Burrows and Erik Hjalmarsson.  The two prospects from season 72 are forwards Conor tanner and Timothy brown.  The two players with the brightest future are are brown and Burrows.  Here is how the bears prospects rank.

Timothy Brown RW Season 72 12th overall  @a_Ferk
Brown definitely tops the bears prospect pool and looks to have a bright future in Seattle.  So far this season Brown has scored 39 goals and 39 assists in 46 games for the Saskatoon Wild.  His phenomenonal play has pushed the wild into second in the VHLM.  Brown is a feisty player who is not afraid to through his body around despite being on the smaller side at 5'11 and 165 pounds.  Brown sits 4th in scoring but leafs the league in hits showing that he is not afraid of the physical side of the game.  Brown has also accumulated a great deal of TPE which should allow him to have a successful transition into the VHL next season.   He will add some extra depth and make up for whoever the bears may lose in this offseason expansion draft.   The bears have had some good performances from rookies with Uhtred and Vikingstad last season and Randy marsh this year.   With the retirement if guy Legrande there is at least his post open on the roster plus whatever happens in the expansion draft.  Brown will be in the VHL next year.

    Bo Burrows D season 71 19th overall  @Walter Fizz
Bo Burrows is a hulking 6'5 225 lb defenseman who plays in Mississauga.   Burrows has had a solid campaign this season scoring 12 goals and 23 assists.  Burrows sits sixth in the league with 147 hits.  The strength of Burrows game is his size and ability to defend.  The bears currently have 4 dmen under contract next season and may only make an impact if one of them is traded or lost in the expansion draft in the offseason.   He has slowed down in earning TPE lately but is still earning practice tpe the past few weeks.

    Connor Tanner C season 72 33 overall @Keygan
Conor tanner is a giant center at 6'8 but is more like a genital giant.  Tanner has just 66 hits despite his monstrous size and is the total opposite of brown in the physical aspect of the game.  Tanner has posted 5 goals and 17 assists for Vegas this season.  His strength of his game is his defense and he could become a good defensive forward if he can develop a bite to his game.  At this time tanner looks to be a longshot to make the Bears as he hasn't earner much TPE lately and hasn't updated since mid may.

    Erik Hjalmarsson D season 71 45 overall @Erik
Hjarmarlson is a teammate of Brown with the wild.  Erik is 6'2 and has 14 assists this season.  Hjalmarsson has an impressive plus 52 rating on the season.  He hasn't developed enough so far in his shirt career and appears destined to be a career VHLM player. He has been getting practice level TPE but at his current rate he will not become a bear in the future.

From the bears prospect pool I can see two players make the roster in the next season or two.  Brown looks like he willbe an impact player for the bears while  Burrows seems to have bottom pair potential at this stage of his career.

Hatter hasn't transported 2 people once the whole game. The hypnotist can only give the "You were transported message" to one person, so it's a common hypno strategy to just write yourself and one other person in your will (usually a dead person), which he has all game.

In any sim league, the new members are the future. Without them, the older members would eventually burn out and the league would cease to exist. The more users we are able to recruit and retain, generally the more enjoyable the experience. Here we will be taking a closer look at some of the newer members that I don’t know particularly well. I think these guys will have an impact on the league in the long term.

BigAL is a user that kind of took me by surprise. Easily identified by his Bart Simpson profile picture, he is currently Ricer’s assistant in Miami. Although he joined about a week after I did, I didn’t feel like he had much of a presence in the discord until very recently. In fact, I didn’t really know who he was when Miami hired him as their Assistant GM. On the other hand, AL has had a pretty large presence on the VHL forums with 168 reputation, and his recent activity on the discord has him at rank 76.

Rory was a member that I first came in contact with on the forums. I would frequently see him liking graphics and articles created by other users, notably Hooperorama who I was helping out at the time. Other than that I have had very little interaction with him. One of the initial things that I liked about Rory was that he had a PewDiePie profile picture, though he has since changed it. Like BigAL, Rory took me by surprise in the sense that he kind of came out of nowhere and became the AGM of Mississauga.

Ketchup is a very new member, having only just joined the league yesterday. Due to this, he is more of a wildcard than the first two users I mentioned. However, a few things about him make me believe that he will be here long term. For one, he joined the VHL discord and has been pretty active in the short time he’s been here. This is usually a good indicator that a member is interested in staying. I’ve had very limited interaction with Ketchup, but he seems willing to learn which is also a good sign. Ketchup’s profile picture is a heinz ketchup bottle, which is memorable and I think is good for his sim brand.

No other waiver prospect currently comes close. One time while I was lurking the discord, PatrikLaine made it clear that he has had a good time in the VHL so far and has no plans on leaving. To me the most impressive thing about Patrik is that he already has 72 community reputation in just under three weeks.

What a wonderful tournament these five amazing teams put on this season. Team Europe have come out on top, earning themselves the Gold Medal as back to back champions. Team USA came up short in the finals after a stellar tournament, and are awarded the Silver Medal. Meanwhile, Team Canada were able to dispatch Team World for the Bronze Medal, and Team Asia ended the tournament in 5th place. This recap will take on a slightly different format as I analyze each game of this incredible medal round.

Team Asia (4) vs. Team World (6)
This playoff game decided who would go on to the Semi-Finals to play against the top-seeded Team USA. Team World had managed to scrape home-ice advantage on the last day of the Round Robin despite actually losing to Team Asia on the final day of action. This set us up for an amazing playoff round between two hungry teams that were eager to play for a medal. Unfortunately for Team Asia, Team World was determined to be the ones that advanced by jumping out to an early 3-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game, after goals from Xavier leFlamant, Micah Adrienne, and Aleelee Kiak. Team World actually had a 4-0 lead heading into the 2nd period after a late tally by Gary Neal. Team Asia attempted to rally back behind top scorer Jungkok but Team World cut down any hopes of that by adding another two goals, another one from Adrienne and one from DeFenz Mann. Late in the game, Viktor Mjers cut Team World’s lead back to two goals but that was all Team Asia was able to do. Team World would come out on top, winning 6-4 in regulation and booking themselves a ticket to the Semi-Finals.

Team World (0) vs. Team United States of America (6)
Continuing their dominant performance in the tournament, Team USA easily dispatched Team World by a score of 6-0, which also happened to be the first shutout of the tournament as well. Team USA had an incredible 61 shots on goal as they showed no mercy to their opponents. Robin Winter and Jack Feriancek scored in the 1st period, followed by a couple of goals from Mickey Dickson. Things were all but said and done before Vin Calia scored the 6th and final goal in an absolute rout of Team World.

Team Canada (3) vs. Team Europe (5)
In the second Semi-Final game, we had a much tighter contest between two great teams in Team Europe and Team Canada. Both of these teams were pegged to be favourites to play for Gold, but as is often the case with these tournaments, only one of them can make it. Special teams played an important role in this game and it was Team Canada who got off to an early lead through Tyler Walker after capitalizing on an early power play. Not to be discouraged, Team Europe answered with a goal of their own from Richard Penisson and then a late marker by Marshall James Frostbeard allowed them to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Gabriel Gutzwiler added to Team Europe’s lead before Michael Mac showed Team Canada had some grit and got one back right after. Perhaps gaining some confidence from Mac’s goal, SS Hornet scored a late equalizer with 49 seconds to play in the 2nd, tying this game at 3 heading into the 3rd period. Team Canada got into some penalty trouble of their own in the 3rd, and it ultimately spelt their demise, after G. Gutzwiler scored the 2nd goal, and Chris Hylands added some insurance on a late power play. Team Europe was able to see out the game and get a shot at winning back to back Gold Medals.

Team World (3) vs. Team Canada (4)
What a game this Bronze Medal contest turned out to be. Two teams that really put out their best efforts in an attempt to acquire some hardware. SS Hornet scored a lone goal for Team Canada in the 1st and they took that lead into the 2nd period. SS Hornet added another goal for its team before Aleelee Kiak finally got Team World on the board. However, just 32 seconds after that goal, Team Canada added another one from Joe Exotic which restored their two-goal cushion. Latrell Mitchell then rounded off the scoring of an action-packed 2nd period and had Team World within touching distance heading into the final frame. It wasn’t until 17:16 of the 3rd period before Timothy Brown scored what ended up being the game-winner on the power play for Team Canada. Aleelee Kiak scored a power-play goal of his own to make things interesting in the last couple of minutes but Team Canada was able to hold on for the win and were rewarded with the Bronze Medal.

Team Europe (6) vs. Team United States of America (2)
The tournament’s top two teams met in the Gold Medal game of this season’s tournament. It’s not often you get to see the top-seeded teams battling it out to prove who is truly the best. Team USA won both Round Robin games so they had the slight mental edge coming into this game. Having said that, it was Team Europe who started on the front foot through Leon Gutzwiler and Chris Hylands. Trailing 2-0 heading into the 2nd period, Team USA regrouped and cut the deficit to one after a goal from Jeff Blaze. The Gutzwiler twins then linked up for a goal of their own and restored the two-goal lead for Team Europe. The very next shift, however, Lucas Brandt erased that advantage with a beautiful goal only 16 seconds later. Sadly, that was all the scoring that Team USA would be able to find. Team Europe starting goaltender, Zamboni Driver, made 29 saves in the victory, and our hats are off to Team USA goalie, John Poremba, who faced a whopping 63 shots, and made 57 saves! Bob Helminen, Empty, and Richard Penisson scored the rest of the goals for Team Europe who cruised to victory, and back to back Gold Medals.

"Man, what a fun ride that was!"

James Rose, amidst the failure of moving onward past the semi finals in the s72 World Junior Championship, truly cherished his experience.

"It was simply incredible to play with and against such awesome players.  I had played with Kamenov last season in Mexico, Mjers was my defense partner in Halifax at the start of this season and we had some pretty great games over there, before we got moved to other teams.  Now I play with Riley Knight Gee in Houston and we didn't get paired together but hey, I'm not the coach or in management.  We're still trying to hold down some kind of fort in Houston, so we have our hands full with that at the moment."

Rose did manage to have a decent tournament.  While playing with rookie VHLers and top echelon VHLM players, he did manage to put up a solid performance in the round-robin tournament.  Rose finished 5th on team in scoring with a goal and seven assists in eight games, maintaining an even plus-minus, leading the team in hits with 27 and getting only 3 minor infractions called against him.  Other interesting stat lines include finishing second in the tournament in blocked shots with 25, one less than leader and teammate, Viktor Alexei Kamenov, with 26.  His hit total is good for 5th best, and the most glaring stat that should be paid attention to is his total minutes played. With 236 minutes played, he's good for 6th highest workload in the tournament.

"Yeah the whole experience was pretty thrilling, but out there on the ice, those were some REALLY tough minutes..." said Rose.  "Many of the guys out there were really in it to win it.  That's what was thrilling the most.  Even the locker rooms were pretty active and eager to intermingle, everyone wanted to bring their 'A' game, everyone assumed a role, even the trash talkers.  I got to see some familiar faces, like Chris Hylands and Timothy Brown, and meet so many new people.  From top to bottom, it was incredible."

"That last game against Europe, we weren't good.  I was dreadful, I played 31:28, was a minus three and i have so many bruises from blocking what seemed like 20 shots, even though the stats say seven shots blocked.  It was a difficult game to get a rhythm going, power plays and penalty kills, I was really gassed and I hate admitting that, I wasn't good and I realized from that point, I need to get to another level..."

Despite being out of the tournament, Rose is back in Houston, trying to help get his squad out of last place.  He even showed his happy-go-lucky type personality when being asked who was going to win it all.

"Well, right now it looks like the US got their big boy pants on after we defeated them on day one, heh.  They'll most likely win it all, but I hope I'm wrong.  I'd like to see Europe win, get Hylands another moment of glory"

The Saskatoon Wild are the next team on the ballot for me to speak about. Personally, I've always had a good relationship with Saskatoon and their former management. Heck, the current GM of Saskatoon (@McWolf) is a former AGM of mine. I've always admired his work and he's been such a hard working person not just for this site but also for his own teams. Heck, I remember when he was heading off to DC as the AGM over there at the end of our tenure together and thinking, "Man, Halifax will never been the same". It's true to a certain degree, however I will say that his work was very refined and was incredibly trusted. Also, some irony is that now I am the AGM of DC.

First Generation players on the team:

    Lucas Brandt @twists
    Elijah Flynn @Underclass_Hero
    King Kruul @LefLop
    Bobby Wyman @Lefty_S
    Erik Hjalmarsson @Erik
    Alec Volchenkov** @SirRupertBarnes
    (**Special Consideration)

Let's start off with the world class prospect in Lucas Brandt. Lucas has been a superior player in the VHL in every season he's played in. Last season in Halifax, he put up a staggering 87 points in 72 games as a rookie. While that may be impressive, he also put up a huge 76 hits a game with 106 shots blocked. The American was a major piece to the Halifax pie. He was also expected to be 1st overall in the draft however had dropped to 4th overall in the draft down to Saskatoon. This season he's been a huge offensive force for a dominant Saskatoon team. He's put up an alarming 69 points with 32 goals and 37 assists in 34 games. This is highly impressive, especially for a first gen like @twists.

Elijah Flynn has been quite a great depth piece for this team. He's been huge this season on the physical side of the game with 43 hits. He has the potential to be a fantastic depth piece for any team in the VHL. I've had a lot of conversations with him in the past and he's always been a phenominal athlete. @Underclass_Hero is an awesome member to bring onto any team and I know he'll do bits for Davos in the future.

King Kruul. What a dominating name and actually one of my former players. From my time with him King Kruul has been a fantastic player and leader in the locker room. He's been such a high energy guy and leader that he's the perfect player to have on any team. This season, he's put up a very staggering 57 points with 44 assists in 34 games. Whats dope about this is that he's nearly blitzing his statistics from last season in Las Vegas where he put up 57 points and 50 assists in 72 games. @LefLop is such a huge physical presence at 6'8" and 218 lbs. I can't wait to see what he does in Davos in the future.

Bobby Wyman is another brilliant player to enter the league. @Lefty_S has been such a great member for the team as well, putting up a dominating 143 hits with 42 shot blocks. He's been a great depth piece for Saskatoon for the past 2 seasons as well. While he's not scoring a lot, he's doing a lot of the right things on the ice and the dirty work for the team. Every successful team needs one of these guys and Wyman is that for Saskatoon.

Erik Hjalmarsson is another great depth piece for Saskatoon. He's been another major piece of the puzzle for Saskatoon. What makes him such a great utility player on this team is that he truly plays like a huge defensive anchor. Everyone loves a pure defensive defensemen. @Erik looks poised to be a very strong utility player for Seattle in the future.

Alec Volchenkov is another name that comes into this list, however do we count him as a first gen? In theory, he's not. However, I want to include him in this list just purely based on the fact that he went fully inactive and has just come back. Alec Volchenkov is a young center entering the league. He's been great in the faceoff circle and has been contributing physically while still being dangerous in the offensive zone. Defensively he's been a rock and what I consider him to be is a two-way forward. He's going to be a stud in the future and I have no doubts that he's going to be a fantastic prospect in the future. While he's young still and adjusting to the league, I believe he'll only get better and better as the season goes on. @SirRupertBarnes looks poised to come back as strong as ever.

    Team Canada GM Press Update

    By: bigAL | CAN GM

Below is a statement from our coach regrading the goalie controversy we have after two days:

“It’s been a doozie of a tourney for Canada again this year.

Right away, I know I have to address the starting goalie. You media folks up at the TSN and SportsNet and frickin SaskTel TV have been making it a big fricking deal, and so I’ll treat it as such.

Anyways, our tournament so far has shown the field that we are A TEAM. We’re here for a medal. Those jerks over at the TSN and the Sportsnet and the VSN wanna turn this into a two team tournament, but Day 3 presents us with a fantastic opportunity to force Team Canada into contention.

We get our rematches with Team Europe and Team USA in Day 3. Last time around, Jacob Tonn took an explosive Team Europe all the way to a shootout, while Woody McPine stood tall in a shootout of a game against Team USA. Both were tough, tough losses. Both our goalers are hungry for revenge, but only one player gets the crease on Day 3.

But whoever that is, they’re going to play behind a tighter defence. We can’t be hanging our goalies out to dry and ask them to stop 40, 50, 60 shots. I’m stirring up the D a bit by shifting Flaten up to the top pairing alongside Letang, and pairing Walker and Burrows. Flaten and Walker have been fantastic together, but it was time to make a change just for the sake of making a change.

Up front, SS Hornet is answering the call of duty in joining this modern warfare. He’s going to continue to anchor the first line, and fight alongside Timothy Brown and new linemate Squirelly Dan. That’s a kid who earned top line minutes.

Andrew Su has been and his second line have been critical to our 1-2 punch offence, but it’s time to switch up his wingers. JaredN slides back to Su’s right wing, and Michael Mac moves up to Su’s left.

And finally, what I think is the key to Team Canada success, the source of all our mojo, the third line of Joseph Gainer, Remy Moreau, and Joe Exotic. I’m really looking at this Joe Mo Joe line to step and be the key depth piece that pushes us over the top.

Alright, alright, I’ve kept you long enough. It’s breaking my heart to have to choose a starter. Both players are extraordinary tendies with bright futures ahead of them. Both have had incredible successes already in this tournament, and both have had games that could explain a demotion.

Both our goalies have shown the ability to win a game. Both our goalies win games differently. McPine has been stellar in tight games, games with less than 30 shots; whereas Tonn has been able to steal a game when our D take the night off completely.

We’ve got medalists today. We know Team Europe and Team USA are high event, high skill hockey players. We gotta be ready for a long slog to the end of round robin.

The guy who’ll stop the pucks in those three games on Day 3:

    Jacob Tonn

WOAH! Explosive news here from the coach. Tonn will start the last leg of the round robin. He’s going to stand tall against the best teams in the tournament tomorrow, and I have complete faith in this young goaler.

See you all here next time!

So far we have two teams still perfect after the first day of games, with Team Asia taking the number one spot thanks to their regular/overtime wins, closely followed by Team Europe whose two shootout victories are enough to take the second position. The United States comes next, having won one and lost one in overtime, while Team Canada is all over the place, going 1-1-1 through their three games.  Rounding out the standings is Team World, whose performance leaves a little to be desired, as they have lost three times, once in overtime. All in all, the standings are neck and neck, with three teams tied on points heading into Day 2 of games. Let’s take a look at all the action from our first day of games, right here on your WJC Daily Update!

    Team Asia

Despite not having a single skater in the top ten for points (you have to go all the way down to Jungkok at number 12, though he is tied for tenth with four, all goals, in fact, more on that later), Team Asia is off to a great start this WJC. Both their games have been nailbiters, with their first victory coming in a 4-3 victory against the Canadians. Despite being outshot 45-24, Team Asia held strong, with a particularly impressive third-period display of defensive grit. Bacon’s 42 saves may not have earned a star, but he certainly showed what it means to put the team on his back in this one. Our first star of the game went to a well-deserving Kazimir Komarov, whose two goals (including the game-winner) were vital in securing the victory for the Asians. Going back to Jungkok however, take a look at his performance in Game 5 against the United States. Take a good hard look at the stat’s line. Yes, you are reading that right; four goals in just the one game from the Korean. Speaking of putting the team on his back, this was almost single-handed; but not quite. Arthur Dayne assisted three times, and the aforementioned Komarov was the one to put the icing on the cake four minutes into the overtime period. It’s been a good showing from Team Asia so far; let’s see if they can keep it up!

    Team Europe

The Europeans have started off the tournament with two wins, but it could have just as soon been two losses. Finding themselves in two back-to-back shootouts, if their luck was just a little worse you could potentially have seen them much farther down in the standings. Regardless, lady luck smiled on them indeed, and they walked away with both the wins. Similar to Team Asia, their only skater near the top-ten in points is Valtteri Vaakanainen, who is coincidentally also tied for tenth with four points. Does this mean balanced scoring, or do our top teams have some hidden issues they need to sort out? Their first game against Team Canada was neck and neck, with four separate equalizers being scored. Gabriel Gutzweiler’s brace was key in keeping the Europeans in the game, while Chris Hylands was the man to score the winning shot in the shootout. The second game was a little different. Despite trailing early on in the first to Team World, they quickly came back with three unanswered goals, absolutely blitzing them. Despite eventually conceding the equalizer, they did enough to take it to the shootout where their goalie Zamboni Driver came up big, stopping one and psyching out the second shot to end it after just four shots.

    Team United States of America

The United States has been an interesting team thus far; they certainly know how to put on a show. Jack Feriancek and Mickey Dickson are both electrifying players, whose five points apiece land them solidly in the top 10 for points. Each had three in their first game against Team World that seemed to be trying to answer the question “how many different periods of domination can we have?” Despite a strong start in the first period, the United States conceded four in a row in the second, before then scoring another four in a row to take the victory a thrilling 7 goals to 5. Robin Winter came up big, kicking off the comeback with a shorthanded goal twelve and a half minutes into the second period, before scoring the equalizer just a minute and a half later. Game two was a heartbreaking overtime loss to Team Asia, but showed great signs of promise, as the Americans were never really out of reach of victory; it just didn’t go their way. Lucas Brandt and Jack Feriancek each had a goal and assist to their name, but despite their best efforts were unable to take the victory.

    Team Canada

Despite sitting fourth in the standings, Team Canada has been on fire to start the WJC. They have four players inside the top ten four points, including three of the top four centres in the tournament: SS Hornet,  JaredN, and Andrew Su. Alex Letang is the lynchpin defenceman holding the group together and is tied for most points from a defenceman, while Timothy Brown is holding strong. The Canadians have the top three slots for +/-, a factor helped out by their third game against Team World that saw them win by a blowout score of 6-1; five goals scored in the first period. Andrew Su’s four-point game was particularly impressive, though it was goaltender Jacob Tonn’s 49 save performance that deserves significant praise, considering he wasn’t even named one of the stars.  Their first two games were very tight, and although it didn’t quite go their way, losing in a shootout to Team Europe and losing by just a single goal to Team Asia isn’t the worst way Day One could have gone. Looking ahead, Canada needs to stay the course; they have the firepower and they have the grit to take this tournament for themselves.

    Team World

While Team Canada’s fourth-place position might be a little disingenuous considering their +3 goal differential, Team World’s -8 is just about right for their performances thus far; but even with that being said, I wouldn’t count them out just yet. Yes, they lost big to Canada, but they only fell to the United States by 2 goals, and only lost to Team Europe in a shootout. What Team World needs is more consistency. Their goaltender, Hex Valentine, has been about as hot and cold as you can get. His games against Team USA and Team Canada left a lot to be desired, conceding a total of 13 goals across 71 shots, but a strong 40 save performance against the Europeans showcased what he can do. With all that being said, how can Team World dig themselves out of this? They are in an interesting position: they have one of the greatest disparities in talent between their lines of any team. Left-winger Gary Neal leads the tournament in points with eight, on two goals and six assists, and is shooting at an impressive 16.67% rate. Considering Aleelee Kiak’s and Latrell Mitchell’s strong performances as well (with Mitchell’s three goals ranking best amongst defencemen), you would think they would be a stronger competitor. But with a lack of depth scoring, they have struggled. We will see if they can turn this around.

But for now, that will be all from us. Do you agree with our assessment? Tune in next time for your WJC Update! See you there!
