Ledge got a reaction from monttu in Joining a promising rebuild in Riga
'Twas the night of the VHL Entry draft, and in the second round, there was a 25% chance that, if you were selected in that round, you would go to the Riga Reign, who had an abominable amount of picks in the draft. Linus Zetterstrom was one of those picks, and he is joining a rebuild that will be surprising if it doesn't yield a championship. Here are some of the talent that Riga drafted:

Cabe McJake, 1st round, 7th overall
Addison McLaren, 1st round, 8th overall
Dolant Fertitta, 1st round, 10th overall
Joe Kelly, 1st round, 12th overall
Sirkants Klamasteris, 1st round, 14th overall
Justin Lose, 2nd round, 26th overall
Linus Zetterstrom, 2nd round, 27th overall
Artair McCloud, 2nd round, 28th overall
Vivek Weiner, 2nd round, 32nd overall
Isau DaMoose, 3rd round, 38th overall
Teppo McBighit, 3rd round, 42nd overall
Andy Nexber, 4th round, 52nd overall
Connor Sim, 4th round, 58th overall
Liam Fischl, 4th round, 59th overall
Nikolas DAndrea, 4th round, 64th overall
Jared Carter, 6th round, 87th overall
Eddie Dams, 6th round, 90th overall
Hi Hello, 6th round, 94th overall
Matthew A Sovick Jr., 7th round, 106th overall

Nineteen picks! Holy crap! Hedgehog pretty much sold his entire team to load up for this deep, deep draft, and it seems to have worked magnificently. McJake and McLaren are two TPE-earning monster first-gens who look like steals even at 7 and 8. Fertitta and Kelly are good, solid guys you can depend on to have a career in the VHL, Klamasteris will be the goalie of the future, Lose, Zetterstrom, McCloud, and Weiner look like potential quality depth picks, DaMoose, McBighit, and Nexber all have massive potential, Sim, Fischl, and DAndrea are long-term fliers who could end up great, Carter and Dams are 6th round fliers, and Hello and Sovick are the backup option for goalies.

Great job, hedgehog, it looks like you got a whole bunch of unique talent in this draft. Watch as this group slowly makes it's way into VHL stardom.

12 teams in the time required wouldnt happen, certainly not to the quality we’d want. Personally I like them keeping the identity of the M team that owns them in case someone signs for that identity but we might try to expand the Junior “brands” over time.

Also Montreal is a major hockey city, I’d expect it will someday be a VHL team, VHLM at least. I can’t see us using it on a Junior team.

    1. As I keep spamming on discord, I really like the potential of Alexis Leprince, and I think we did great with our limited picks

    2. Kind of an underdog win, we were two minutes away from getting to the finals. Oh well, always next year

    3. Getting to 250 TPE for myself and making the playoffs for the Aces

    4. From what I have learned, the 'best' teams are Las Vegas, Miami, Philly, and Sasky

    5. Kind of interested in Berocka's cricket league, and I catch the odd football game sometimes

Credit to @ZP16 for giving me the idea for this with his article about a day in the life of Kankkunen.
This is how Linus Zetterstrom spent his day this Friday, four days before the VHL Draft.

    6:30 A.M.
Zetterstrom is up before the sun in Malmo, where he is staying at his parents' house while he prepares for the draft. He gets dressed, brushes his teeth, and heads to the practice facility of the Malmo Redhawks in his "new" used Honda Civic. He still has ties with the Redhawks organization from his SHL time there before the S74 VHLM dispersal draft. There, he begins a workout, which involves intervals on the spin bike, pull-ups, pushing and pulling a weighted sled, and other muscle workouts. He also does a lot of stretching before and after.

    8:00 A.M.
Zetterstrom comes home to the delight of his golden retriever, Bella, who he takes for a run in the forest. After that, he has a quick breakfast consisting of a banana and a protein shake. Now it's his free time, so he goes to his basement and plays Rocket League with his friends for a while. Funny enough, his dad, who took time off work to stay with Linus while he's home, is still fast asleep.

    9:15 A.M
After his down time, Linus was driving back to Redhawks HQ for a hour ice session with a skills coach. He worked on retrievals, passing, moving around at the point, and conditioning. At this point in the day, Linus is hella tired and ready for a good meal.

    10:30 A.M
Since it's Friday, and a school day for most kids Linus's age, he was also studying. He signed up for courses in business, math, chemistry, English, and sports management at various universities. He spends four hours doing schoolwork on days off, so two hours in the morning. This morning, Linus did an hour in business and an hour in chemistry

    11:30 A.M
Linus's brothers, Henrik and Jesper, are home from from work and university respectively, and Linus's mother, Alice, is back from a trip she took with friends. The Zetterstrom family has a family brunch together, and everyone has a good time. Linus fills himself up with sausage and eggs.

    1:00 P.M
After brunch, and a lot of talk about the American election and how it will affect Sweden, Linus does another two hours of his schoolwork. One hour of math and one hour of sports management(he alternates sports management with English). Linus's ultimate goal is to use the skills he has learned in university to eventually become a GM after his playing days are over. He applied for a law course at a prominent Swedish school but has yet to be responded to.

    3:00 P.M
After his schoolwork is done, Linus jumps on his piece of crap laptop and does some draft interviews VHL GMs have sent. He is visibly hyped up as he answers the questions. After he completes those, he goes on a sketchy site called the VHL portal and he looks at the rosters and picks of the teams that sent him the interviews. He goes into so much detail and gets so drawn into it he spends an hour doing it.

    4:00 P.M
One of his friends calls and asks him if he's up for a little mountain biking. Linus, an ever-lover of mountain biking, happily accepts. They go through the stunning Swedish forests and hills, and they have a great view of the magnificent Baltic sea as they hop over little jumps and go down steep and rocky hills. Linus has a great time

    6:00 P.M
Before he has dinner with his dad, his mom, and Henrik, he jumps on a zoom call with his Canadian agent, @Ledge_and_Dairy to discuss the interviews and the draft in general. Ledge advises him not to have preferences, since almost anyone can take him. Linus agrees

    7:00 P.M
Linus enjoys his final dinner with his family for the last time until the next holiday. He will catch a flight at the airport in Stockholm at 9:00 and prepare for the draft in Las Vegas with his friends and teammates. He hugs his mom, shakes hands with his dad and Henrik, zooms Jesper at his university for a quick goodbye, and takes an Uber to the airport.

    7:45 P.M
Linus is waiting at the airport and is very bored. He passes the time playing among us on his phone, although the crappy airport Wi-Fi made him lag out multiple times. One time, he is made impostor, and the game immediately lags out. He curses and throws the phone on his seat in the waiting area. His Las Vegas Aces phone case cracks. He vows to get a new one once he lands

    9:00 P.M
Linus boards the plane and it takes off. He prepares himself for the long 17 hours that lie ahead.

    11:00 P.M
His flight makes it first stop, in Paris, France. He buys a little Eiffel tower souvenir because that's how frickin bored he is.

    10:00 P.M (American time)
Linus lands in Atlanta, Georgia, the second to last stop for his flight. He buys an Atlanta Thrashers keychain to but on his bag.

    1:00 A.M
Linus lands in Las Vegas, jet lagged and extremely tired. He taxis over to a Vegas hotel where he is supposed to meet Jiggs @JigglyGumballs but Jiggs is obviously fast asleep. Linus gets his room key and becomes dead to the world as soon as his head hits the pillow.

Just going to put this in here in case it gets confusing: the times are probably messed up somehow, especially with all the flights and time changes. Excuse me if I did something wrong, because I'm too lazy to do the research and get it all spot on. Anyway, this should get me to 172 TPE, which jumps me a little in the draft rankings. Maybe I've written enough here to get me to 1,000 words.

Ledge reacted to diacope in A day in the life of Kasper Kankkunen
It was a sad ending to an incredible season in Las Vegas and a praised Kankkunen didn't show up when it mattered most. In 12 games Kasper had only 2 goals and 3 points with a plus minus of 0, during the season he was a +86 and everybody was hopeful he'd at least carry the team defensively, the lack of hitting and attempts to block shots didn't help. We're not saying he won't perform for his new team but he'll need to stay positive and look ahead if he wants to win the rookie of the year.

Thanks to the efforts of soon to be star athletes like Gary Rush who had over a point a game or Minott who all over the place giving it his all nobody really noticed the bad plays and poor shifts from tired teammates, specially Kankkunen. The Aces were still strong despite the facts and the better team won.

Now after another failed run at the cup the Las Vegas Aces are not giving up and they still have a ton of potential in the dressing room. Newer fans from the new logo era will be watching closely early on to see if it's worth another season of tickets after watching their team lose before getting to the finals again but lifetimers are already purchasing and getting ready no matter the results.

The off-season is here and it's time for the players to move on with their careers and hotel rooms in Vegas were going vacant as fast as new attendants sign up. After a goodbye speech and last meal with the team, It was time for Kasper Kankkunen to leave and he was London inbound.

    Thursday, November 5th. 10:30AM
    McCarran International Airport

Before he jumped on the plane to join his new squad the media approached Kasper for a last interview of sorts and like always it was no problem for the offensive defenseman.

"What do you think about next years prospects?" - VHLM Sportswriter Anna Winter
Well the league is growing rapidly right now so there's a lot of talent, if the managers focus and try to develop players to their fullest we will see a more competitive league that could possibly expand soon.

"What's the one thing you'll miss most about playing for the Aces?" - Vegas Scout Samuel Finconn
Has to be my teammate, everyday when I arrived at the area they greeted and motivated me to improve my game. Good meals, good games and a lot of good laughs.

"What are you most excited for when you arrive in London?" - Random Fan
I'm excited to see my European buddy Friedriksson again, gonna be easier to adjust tobthe new locker room atmosphere with a familiar face.. One thing I'm curious about is the arena, hopefully I adjust quickly if anything is different from North America, had a hard time getting used to thing when I arrived from Finland.

After our last question the jets to roar on and the passengers were signaled to the lobby so they could board the plane, it was officially goodbye to future VHLer and lifetime Ace but his history remains for future Vegas defenders who wanna follow his path.

Nearly 12 hours of flying, music on shuffle and 42 bags of pretzels and Kasper finally arrived London City Airport, the rest of the travelers were starving and angry so it wasn't a good start in his new colours but as soon as the plane landed Kankkunen decided to buy everybody dinner to get back on their good side.

    Thursday, November 5th - 11:32PM
    Ritz London Hotel

Minutes after dinner we hear a ring ring ring, it was the London United General Manager, the group of strangers huddled in to listen, "Hey kid are you ready to fly here join us?"
    "Already here boss"
"Good to hear, meet you at the arena tomorrow, we got an early team practice to see where every is at"
    "Awesome see you there"

It didn't take long for the media to catch on and the cameras were rolling, they followed to prospect to the Ritz London Hotel and the offensive defenseman was willing to answers another set of questions with the new set of reporters.

"What's the first thing your gonna do when you wake up?" - London Hockey Review reporter Jane Jones
Probably order up some breakfast and head to the arena, can't wait to meet my new teammates.

"We just heard New York defender High Jass was just added to the team for a couple of top picks right before you arrived.. What do you think of that?" - Athletic Trainer David Ugu
I think our defense went from being a work in progress to a group who'll be able to handle better offensive schemes, yeah the picks could have made us stronger in the future buy I think it's our time to shine. Smart move by the general manager.

"What're you going to do on the ice to help improve the team?" - VHLM Sportswriter Anna Winter
Well my main focus my whole career has been to score, expect lots of shots. I'm open to changing any part of my game though, very pleased to be part of a great group of players!

"Where will London end up in the standings at the end of the season?" - Reporter Rudy Rack
The media keeps asking me this, my answer stays the same.. We will make the playoffs or just miss them, give us a couple of seasons and you'll be asking us questions about the playoffs.

A yawning Kasper called it quits after answering more questions and checked into his hotel room, the tired reporters agreed knowing they'll see him at practice tomorrow.

Not long after a short sleep in his new city the defender got ready and hopped into a cab to the United Arena, at first the driver was confused and drove to the opposite side of town but Kankkunen showed up, only 40 minutes later.. At least the media was gone

    Friday, November 6th - 8:42AM
    United Arena

The team was well into training and the coach didn't look happy so Kasper quickly suited up and hit the ice. One shot, two shots later and the session ended, the team piled into the locker room, Kankkunen stayed behind to get in some more reps, missing an opportunity to introduce himself

Yeah the day didn't go as planned for Kasper and his short VHL career is starting off rough but it's still early and the finnish defender seems determined to make an impact wherever he can, don't let these early mistakes fool you

With all the hype around this upcoming VHLM dispersal draft, I thought it would be great to share my experience and what I'm doing to prepare for it. Of course everyone has their own story to tell but I want to show you my struggles and accomplishments to help players who need some motivation.

    Training:

With the offseason comes a lot of practice and workouts. This offseason I want to improve many things to be the best player I can be and possibly be upgraded to the first line next season. Obviously if I want top ice time I have to earn it. When I'm not at home watching the VHLM / VHL I'm at the gym. I have a strict diet too to keep in shape for the camp before the season starts. I don't want to make any wrong impressions.

    Interviews:

I'll be honest, I'm a bit shy. I wasn't the popular one in school and I struggled in the first few games to communicate with my team. So when I have to push all of that aside and impress scouts or GMs... its a big deal. I've been working with a therapist and a interpersonal coach to guide me to smooth interviews. I needed that since I've bombed interviews for jobs in the past and if you want to make it to the VHLM or VHL you have to have perfect interviews.

    Relaxing:

I can't have hockey on my mind 24/7. I need a break from time to time. I love video games and listening to audio books. I'm a big science fiction, dystopian future reader. Sometimes the best day is just relaxing playing a single player game on my computer while listening to a book or podcast or watching a video. I also enjoy bowling too. I bowl competitively when I get the chance. It's a great way to stay in shape and get some social time in with leagues. I recommend finding a sport where you can just relax and drink a beer with friends.

    Mental Health:

In interviews I talked about getting coached by my therapist. When I was younger and bullied a lot it depressed me. I was broken and needed someone or something to help. My parents got me to go to therapy and I've been going ever since. Hockey is a mental game too. Some nights are great and really improve your mental health while some are bad and really get you down. Breathing exercises or meditations are key in those down points for me. Missing the playoffs really broke me mentally. I even refused interviews after the locker cleanout because I wasn't mentally ready. Talking to my therapist really brought me back up and got me to the point where I was comfortable to talk again. Just venting to someone for an hour is great. I think everyone should have a talk to a therapist at some point in their life.

An example of meditating before a big game.

I hope that you gained something from this. The draft day is coming and everyone is excited. This draft class is huge! I can't wait to be drafted and playing along side some great players. I hope to see you out on the ice. If you ever see me on the street, don't be shy to say hi!

The VHL and VHLM finals are almost over -- or rather they will be over by Friday I'd hope -- so the draft is obviously just around the corner; not quite over the horizon, but like a sunrise or sunset, you know it's inevitably coming.

We'll mark the time as 'Soon(TM)', as no announcement has been made on when it'll take place, but the hype is already slowly building thanks to Gorlab posting his 'don't draft me unless you draft him' thread and addressing it to all VHL general managers. It seems like there's nothing that sparks league interest than a spicy piece of forum drama to read up on, and the lopsided defensive duo provided that by threatening each individual GM via tags, so it'll be interesting to see what happens to them.

One destination is unlikely though... Toronto.

Oh I could use two defenders, no doubt, but so could literally any other VHL team at this point.

The distance between the Legions' first and second round selections make the risk far too great, so I can safely say we're not going to draft the two players who put weeks of effort into their names, and the only other teams that have viable assets in the draft that could 'make it happen' are Calgary and Vancouver. Calgary could chose R and L with the fourth and seventh overall picks, while Vancouver could decide to make the selection later in the draft with their two first round picks as well... assuming both fall to there.

Besides the drama, Toronto has prepared for this draft in two separate ways.

Firstly it's important to understand your draft tendencies by exploring your history, but somehow stay away from over analyzing it to a point you start doubting your abilities. Toronto's draft 'luck' hasn't been all that great -- as I've explored in the past -- considering three of the prospects we've selected were considering quality at one point. Micheal Mac disappeared, which stunned another VHL GM; Gainer got too busy with real life, and broke away from what boils down to a time-consuming hobby on the internet; and Graves went MIA after moving into a new home with a difficult newborn.

Had Graves, Gainer and Mac remained active... Toronto's drafts would have been considerably better, but sadly that's not the case, and is an argument every VHL team can make. At the end of the day, somewhat similar to a real NHL draft, GMs are rolling a dice on each first generation player they draft. People who've recreated come with a natural raise in their draft stock, since the majority have proven they'll stick around with a player and keep earning attribute points.

Secondly...  I honestly think pre-draft interviews are an important tool we can use to measure a users interests and ideals, and in my opinion it serves that purpose quite well.

My shortcoming was quite evident after the S72 VHL Entry Draft, although it wasn't something I could truly follow up on until this season (as I only had a first round pick in 73), I've found it certainly helps narrow down a draft list.

I strongly believe I could have avoided some of the 'busts' by just expanding how large the net I cast was, and by that I mean simply messaging more people with these pre-draft interviews in comparison to the past. I would send out ten maximum in years prior, but this time I've sent out over thirty, and I've gotten some really awesome replies. The recruitment teams efforts to quadruple how deep this draft class is absolutely helps, but I should have been sending thirty PMs to prospects in the first place.

It won't stop a Gainer from leaving because life is too chaotic, it won't stop a Graves leaving from being overstressed, and it won't stop a Frence from imploding... but it certainly reduces the chance, and that's something I've come to enjoy about this process.

Is that enough for a media spot now?
