Binge watching House of Cards.

 

Holy shit... I fucking hate politics yet somehow, through Kevin Spacey's awesome acting, I am enjoying it thoroughly.

 

Currently on the third episode of the second season.

I don't really like politics either, but House of Cards is awesome.

 

I finally got around to watching Transformers: Age of Extinction. Watched it over a couple of days, as I could barely even get through it. I had to force myself to finish it. I just don't like Wahlberg in that role.
I liked the first 2 with Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, and after that it just isn't the same. They need to stick to the same cast, really. It's always been about a bunch of metal flying around the screen, but I liked them when those 2 were in it.

Obviously, Nicola Peltz is smokin' hot, so it's cool that they got her to co-star with Wahlberg I guess, but I didn't really enjoy the movie too much.

It's too bad. There were rumors that Megan Fox might be coming back awhile ago, but now she's too busy and she said she wouldn't unless Shia was as well anyways. Shia has shit on those movies publicly so I doubt they'd let him return either.

Anyways....yeah. F that movie. Transformers 1 > all of them. Apparently Wahlberg is back for the next one as well.

I thought Skyfall took Bond back to classic Bond but Spectre does it more. If all you ever wanted was Daniel Craig in a classic Bond film, you will love Spectre.

Eh, the plot holes it apparently has (a similar problem to Skyfall) troubles me. I like the "style" of Bond, but my issue with Craig ones has been that when they go for style of substance, they aren't campy enough to make up for it. When you look at the Brosnan Bonds for example, even the worst of em (Die Another Day, god Halle Berry was awful in that) still was campy enough that it wasn't asking you to take it seriously.

Craig isn't nearly as charming or witty, and they don't really go for it with his movies anyways. Especially Skyfall didn't. They hit gold with the reboot of Casino Royale with a gritty down to earth story, but in attempts to ramp the stakes up the plots have become far to murky. I still plan on seeing Spectre and hold out hope that despite plot holes I still enjoy it, like I did with Skyfall.

I think this worked like Skyfall did. They are actually quite similar stylistically with same director and all.

I would say Skyfall is better but I also think Skyfall is less like the old Bond I love (much like Casino Royale, which doesn't take away from both films but they're different). Spectre is a worse film but it's forgivable, for me anyway, because it's very much Bond.

Surprised no talk or thoughts on Star Wars, even non spoiler stuff.

 

I saw it last night. It was good, but not great. The movie felt like it was more homage than it was original, and because of that I found the entire plot to be predictable. At about the halfway point of the movie I knew pretty much everything that was going to happen. It was still very well executed and very well acted. But it's another case of another Star Wars movie for me that is good, but man it could of been great. It'd of been nice if plot wise they didn't play it so safe, and gave the audience some genuine shocks.

Never seen any star wars and I thought it was good.

 

Legend was NOT, I repeat NOT a good movie if you wanted to see some british gangster action. It was more of a love story.

 

In the heart of the sea was alright, it was a true story so it couldnt be too good but ya.

 

Creed was awesome, was a classic boxing movie and I loved it. Also Stallone was pretty funny in it.

Huh? What do you mean by that. Most of the movies that are true stories/based on true stories are actually done quite well. In fact i'd say a large majority of the ones I've seen are in my top 25. Zodiac, brilliant. Argo, brilliant.

It was good, it just the story was kinda shitty. You know what I am saying? Like when they were on the little rafts and on the island it was pretty brutal.

This will quote you twice for some reason. You can't delete quote son this stupid update. Anyways, you realize it's based loosely on Moby Dick and not actually Moby Dick, right? Ron Howard said portraying Moby Dick would be close to impossible as the details of it are sketchy. So he was able to do what he wanted with it without getting being constricted to a plot. If the story sucked, it sucked haha. All I was getting at was that most true stories are done very well.

 

Amber Alert (2010): 10/10 - Ties into the true story. This is the story that actually inspired the thing we call Amber Alert. I recommend this to anyone, and I mean anyone. It has that Blair Witch POV for about 25% of the movie but thats doesn't really make it any worse. Honestly if you're tied for a movie to watch on Netflix, look this one up. It was somewhat jumpy at times too (as in I was literally on the edge of my sofa).

Yes it was based on the Non-fiction story told by the man that was on the ship. Real stories usually arent that good as for the movie, not by the directing, plot etc.

 

One of the reasons why I did not like American Sniper was because of how it ended (because of how it did irl obviously).

Yeah but American Sniper is a classic case of the "Star Spangled Boner" the Americans have for glorifying their own.

 

Usually movies that are based off true events are actually very well done and the director has the pressure of the real people judging it. (ex. We Are Marshall, Argo, Titanic)

I was too busy watching in three times.

 

I think it's fantastic. The plot is predictable, yes, but I don't think it was even really the focus of the movie. It was more about introducing the characters, and they did a phenomenal job of that. Plus, Kylo Ren and the First Order are a bunch of Vader/Empire fanboys. It's not unreasonable to think they were like, "Hey, we're gonna do what they did but better." The movie is even aware of that, with some of Han's dialogue when they plan their attack on the Base. It may not have been a shock, but it also has a scene that is going to be among the most iconic of this saga ever. So well done.

 

Overall, I'm very, very pleased with the movie and I can't wait to see what they do with the new cast of characters. Daisy Ridley owned that movie, and it seems like everyone sees John Boyega and makes a comment about how he's a "young Denzel." Oscar Isaac was fucking awesome because he's Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver owned the role as Kylo Ren. Very excited to see how that character turns out.

Oh, I saw The Hateful Eight 70mm Roadshow back on the 30th as well. The more I think about the movie, the more I love it. It was hilarious, tense, incredibly engaging, and the intermission was fucking brilliant. Plus, Ennio Morricone's score for the film is spectacular. The format is gorgeous as well, the film was an absolute stunner. Hopefully we see more directors going back to using film, and maybe even more of these roadshows that project them in film as well. There is absolutely something magical about the format that you lose with digital, despite all the benefits there are to it.

 

I'm tempted to go see it again before the roadshow wraps on Thursday.

Me and my girl saw 10 Cloverfield Lane in theatres last night. It was fucking great.

 

John Goodman was just incredible, he made me so uncomfortable the entire movie. I'd go as far to say as he was nearly on a level with Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler, or John Lithgow in Season 4 of Dexter. The other two actors did great as well. The whole movie does a very good job of making you uncertain as to what the fuck is going on exactly outside the bunker, despite the fact you realize it must have something to do the original Cloverfield. You also are constantly questioning the mind and motivation of John Goodman's character the whole way through, and you never really figure it out for sure until the ending. Which, as I somewhat alluded to, still manages to catch you a little bit off guard despite everything you know.

 

Definitely worth the 83-89% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's kind of a part mystery, part drama, maybe a little bit of a thriller/horror. If you like these things, watch it.

So I've been loving the Superhero fair lately. Civil War was great and I thought all the hate for BvS was unjustified. I still haven't seen Deadpool yet but I hear good things.

Well thought out opinion. Honestly, these universe movies are truly shaping into such a unique thing, them becoming less quality as stand alone films is for the best. They also lean hard into their genres and that's great because these things should be for fans first.

Yeah just saw Deadpool. Had some really great jokes in there, up there with Guardians of the Galaxy in regards to really great B tier film stuff. I didn't like it better than Civil War tho.  But I didn't think I would. It doesn't really have a shot. It's trying to be something lesser, and it doesn't care. It's why it so good. Same with Guardians imo. But movies that try to do more, and succeed? I can't ignore that.

Not a movie but based on, Ash vs Evil Dead, great great series. Binged through season 1 on the weekend and loved it. Way better than the movies.

How have we let this thread fall by the wayside? @Draper or someone with powers should pin this anyway, it's usually a central hub for discussion. What have people been seeing lately, and what are their thoughts?

 

I recently saw Suicide Squad in theaters with @Advantage Neither of us were blown away by it, and I certainly think that there is a few things that probably hold the movie down, but it was by no way as bad as the reviews are saying. There are some legit great scenes in that thing, and pretty much everything including the editing in the first 20-40 minutes were solid. Will Smith and Margot Robbie are the clear standouts, their takes on Deadshot and Harley were very fun to behold. Despite him being cut out of most of the film as well Leto's Joker really worked for me. The chemistry he had with Margot on screen stood out, and once they do a solo Batman movie with Harley and Joker I think people are going to be super into it. That said I'm waiting for the extended edition of that thing to add some more scenes, give some more characters some backstory and give Leto a bit more of a role in the movie.

Currently trying to go through my list of 100 movies to watch in 2016.

 

Recently watched the first two Bourne movies and Die Hard.  Enjoyed all three and of course been seeing a lot of movies from 2016.  Really enjoyed Nerve.  Suicide Squad was alright as Ryan said and I thought Bad Moms was good for a few laughs, although the all-mom party going on around me was rather annoying.
