oilmandan reacted to dstevensonjr in A Half-Decade of VHL All-Stars
For my Theme Week post on All-Stars, I decided to take a look back at the last half decade (Seasons 88-92) in the VHL to see which players would be the All-Star of the last Half Decade for each team. Considering the individual nature of being an All-Star, I'll focus more on individual performances in the regular season rather than team results. I'll take a look at their overall performance from S88-92, and the best season in that run. In order to come up with specific team criteria, I'm only including seasons that the player played for that team, and the player must have played at least 4 seasons for the team unless otherwise noted. S92 totals for players come at the 48 game mark of the season.

    Calgary Wranglers

    Player: D - Phil Strasmore

    S88-92 Totals: 336 GP  45 G  224 A  269 PTS  671 SHT  1000 PIM  1193 HIT  697 SB  8 GWG  23 PPG
    Best Season: S90 - 72 GP  13 G  47 A  60 PTS  166 SHT  201 PIM  244 HIT  170 SB  3 GWG  8 PPG

Why?: Strasmore had seasons that were arguably more productive offensively in the five seasons in Calgary, but S90 was the best blend of both offense and defense. The highest goal output in the five season run came that season, along with a linked high in shots and powerplay goals. S88 was a contender when Strasmore won the Jake Wylde Trophy for best defensive defenseman, but All-Star nods usually boil down to scoring, so I'll give it to the better goal year.

    Chicago Phoenix

    Player: C - Scotty Sundin

    S88-92 Totals: 288 GP  153 G  195 A  348 PTS  1831 SHT  164 PIM  287 HIT  139 SB  23 GWG  33 PPG
    Best Season: S91 - 72 GP  49 G  63 A  112 PTS  522 SHT  50 PIM  103 HIT  31 SB  5 GWG  12 PPG

Why?: Sundin was the quintessential Phoenix player of the last half decade, playing 4 full seasons from S88-91 in Chicago. Sundin won the Scotty Campbell Trophy and the Mike Szatkowski Trophy in S91, which ended up being Sundin's most productive season for Chicago. The choice for the best season for Sundin was between S90 and S91, but it wasn't much of a choice to make given how dominant that season was in S91.

    D.C. Dragons

    Player: D - Mark Calaway

    S88-92 Totals: 264 GP  69 G  178 A  247 PTS  959 SHT  458 PIM  658 HIT  613 SB  11 GWG  26 PPG
    Best Season: S90 - 72 GP  20 G  56 A  76 PTS  286 SHT  132 PIM  166 HIT  165 SB  4 GWG  6 PPG

Why?: Not much debate around the All-Star choice for Calaway's season, any time that a blueliner hits 20 goals in a season as Calaway did in S90, it's very impressive. A five season high in goals, assists, points, shots, penalty minutes, and game winning goals came in that season as well, showing an all around offensive strength. The goal total wasn't inflated by a surprise powerplay year either, further adding to the impressiveness of that season.

    HC Davos Dynamo

Player: Tie between D - Jake Thunder and G - Lachlan Summers

    S88-92 Totals (Thunder): 288 GP  61 G  294 A  355 PTS  899 SHT  698 PIM  930 HIT  675 SB  15 GWG  38 PPG
    Best Season (Thunder): S88 - 72 GP  17 G  76 A  93 PTS  199 SHT  198 PIM  239 HIT  144 SB  3 GWG  12 PPG

    S88-92 Totals (Summers): 297 GP  190-80-26  .931 SV%  2.36 GAA  21 SO  9519 SV  17949 MIN
    Best Season (Summers): S90 - 64 GP  49-12-3  .938 SV%  2.06 GAA  7 SO  2015 SV

Why?: It was a real tossup between Thunder and Summers, with both deserving of the All-Star nod for Davos. Jake Thunder had some monster seasons on the back end for the Dynamo offensively and defensively. S88 ended up being a solid combination of both sides, winning the Alexander Beketov Trophy for leading the VHL in assists while remaining productive defensively. A full award cabinet that included 2 Victory Cups (S90, S91), a Continental Cup (S89), a Sterling Labatte Trophy (S90), a Jake Wylde Trophy (S90), a Daisuke Kanou Trophy (S89), and the previously mentioned Beketov Trophy. Thunder would be the runaway sole All-Star on most teams, but not for Davos.

Goaltender Lachlan Summers holds an equally impressive resume for the half decade for the Dynamo. Summers won the same Victory and Continental Cups as Thunder on those teams, and also won the Aidan Shaw Trophy, Greg Clegane Trophy, and Brett Slobodzian Trophy in the S90 choice for best season. Summers added a Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy in S88 to go with the rest of that hardware. The .938 single season save percentage is tied for the best among the All-Star goalies in this span, and the .931 overall save percentage tops the rest.

    Helsinki Titans

    Player: C - Daryl Dixon

    S88-92 Totals: 336 GP  153 G  214 A  367 PTS  2098 SHT  543 PIM  1055 HIT  172 SB  17 GWG  34 PPG
    Best Season: S91 - 72 GP  30 G  63 A  93 PTS  470 SHT  122 PIM  176 HIT  38 SB  3 GWG  3 PPG

Why?: Goal scoring is what fans come to see, and 30 goal seasons are a virtual lock for Dixon. Four straight seasons (with a fifth on the way) over 30 make for the class of the Titans, but it was the usual goal scoring with the playmaking spike in S91 that gets the All-Star nod. Career highs in multiple categories came last season for Dixon, including coming close to eclipsing the 100 point mark. Almost the entirety of the goals came at even strength, where the goals are harder to come by than on the powerplay.

    London United

Player: Tie between RW - Molly the Cat and G - Jesse Teno

    S88-92 Totals (the Cat): 335 GP  179 G  189 A  368 PTS  2138 SHT  288 PIM  692 HIT  148 SB  33 GWG  52 PPG
    Best Season (the Cat): S91 - 72 GP  52 G  55 A  107 PTS  528 SHT  56 PIM  127 HIT  31 SB  12 GWG  23 PPG

    S88-92 Totals (Teno): 301 GP  160-109-32  .929 SV%  2.36 GAA  21 SO  9424 SV  18328 MIN
    Best Season (Teno): S91 - 64 GP  40-16-8  .937 SV%  2.02 GAA  6 SO  1937 SV

Why?: Despite winning the Continental Cup together in S88, the pair of All-Stars both put up their best season in S91. Both members of London for all five seasons, they've had spectacular individual seasons and five year runs.

Molly the Cat posted some of the best offensive numbers in the league in S91, with an almost equal distribution between goals and assists. Powering the goals last season were an explosion on the powerplay, notching the league's highest mark with the man advantage as the only player with more than 20 powerplay goals. Last season was the continuation of goal scoring prowess for the Cat, as the follow up to three straight seasons over 30 goals.

Jesse Teno posted the lowest single season goals against average of any of the goalies on this list, barely missing out on a sub 2.00 GAA. Accompanying that sparkling, league best goals against average was a league high in shutouts, and a runner up in save percentage. Teno won the Aidan Shaw and Greg Clegane Trophies in S91 as an acknowledgment of those accomplishments. Teno finished the five year run with the most minutes played among the goalies on this list.

    Los Angeles Stars

Player: Tie between C - Todd Cooke and G - Art Vandelay

    S88-92 Totals (Cooke): 336 GP  186 G  277 A  463 PTS  2086 SHT  247 PIM  479 HIT  177 SB  30 GWG  44 PPG
    Best Season (Cooke): S90 - 72 GP  41 G  77 A  118 PTS  501 SHT  56 PIM  147 HIT  49 SB  7 GWG  11 PPG

    S88-92 Totals (Vandelay): 302 GP  188-88-24  .926 SV%  2.42 GAA  23 SO  9031 SV  17941 MIN
    Best Season (Vandelay): S92* - 43 GP  31-9-3  .928 SV%  2.20 GAA  4 SO  1240 SV

Why?: Another team with an offensive star and a stud goaltender that are too difficult to compare and choose between. Both have had amazing seasons for the Stars, and both have played the entirety of the half decade together in LA.

Todd Cooke has been an extremely productive scorer for all five seasons in LA, but there is a clear standout season in the five that gets the nod for best season. Cooke's S90 season included a league lead in assists and points, along with big hardware. The Mike Szatkowski Trophy, Scotty Campbell Trophy, and Alexander Beketov Trophy all landed in Cooke's Trophy Case following a spectacular S90. Cooke remains the offensive star in LA, headed for yet another 35+ goal season, the benchmark for all five seasons.

Art Vandelay's run of over 60 starts through the entirety of the five season span (including the pace for this season) has been the picture of consistency for Los Angeles. All five seasons above a save percentage of .920 made it difficult to choose from, but this season has the potential to be the best yet for the latex salesman. Vandelay has been the architect of many successes for the Stars, and S92 looks to be building towards career bests in wins, goals against average, save percentage, and shutouts for the aspiring marine biologist.

    Malmo Nighthawks

    Player: G - Ash Sparks

    S88-92 Totals: 231 GP  123-79-26  .926 SV%  2.46 GAA  17 SO  7083 SV  13796 MIN
    Best Season: S89 - 67 GP  30-26-8  .931 SV%  2.49 GAA  9 SO  2222 SV

Why?: Ash Sparks has had multiple solid seasons in the last four seasons to choose from for the Nighthawks, but the standout year definitely goes to S89. While the W/L record didn't reflect just how good Sparks was that season, the other statistics definitely did. Sparks finished S89 with a league high in shutouts, along with top five finishes in save percentage and goals against average among qualified goaltenders. The 9 shutouts in S89 was the most in a single season for a goalie in this half decade run.

    Moscow Menace

    Player: D - Fraser Wallace

    S88-92 Totals: 288 GP  79 G  152 A  231 PTS  1206 SHT  204 PIM  362 HIT  255 SB  9 GWG  27 PPG
    Best Season: S90 - 72 GP  23 G  44 A  67 PTS  382 SHT  60 PIM  115 HIT  20 SB  5 GWG  5 PPG

Why?: As mentioned previously, it is awfully special when a defender can put up a 20 goal season. Fraser Wallace managed 2 of them in the 4 seasons in Moscow, while almost having a third in S88. Deciding between multiple 20 goal seasons was difficult, but the edge goes to S90, as it had better totals in other statistical categories to go with it. A career high in assists, points, shots, hits, and game winning goals makes this a solid All-Star season for Wallace with the Menace.

    New York Americans

    Player: C - Jasper Davis

    S88-92 Totals: 265 GP  108 G  150 A  258 PTS  1291 SHT  132 PIM  380 HIT  222 SB  11 GWG  26 PPG
    Best Season: S91 - 72 GP  39 G  66 A  105 PTS  434 SHT  46 PIM  119 HIT  73 SB  3 GWG  9 PPG

Why?: Jasper Davis burst onto the scene for the Americans in S89, winning the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy as top rookie. With a couple of solid offensive seasons along the way in the four seasons, it was the offensive explosion in S91 that takes the All-Star honours for Davis. Eclipsing the century mark for points was a highlight, along with career highs across the board in goals, assists, points, shots, penalty minutes, and powerplay goals.

    Prague Phantoms

Player: Tie between C - John Jameson and D - Velociraptor Greg

    S88-92 Totals (Jameson): 336 GP  211 G  247 A  458 PTS  2278 SHT  739 PIM  1258 HIT  153 SB  39 GWG  48 PPG
    Best Season (Jameson): S89 - 72 GP  50 G  64 A  114 PTS  533 SHT  72 PIM  243 HIT  39 SB  7 GWG  10 PPG

    S88-92 Totals (Greg): 336 GP  74 G  227 A  301 PTS  1067 SHT  617 PIM  815 HIT  636 SB  14 GWG  40 PPG
    Best Season (Greg): S88 - 72 GP  18 G  59 A  77 PTS  271 SHT  114 PIM  190 HIT  143 SB  4 GWG  9 PPG

Why?: A couple of large team based awards were won together by the two All-Stars for the Phantoms, both winning the Continental Cup in S90, and the Victory Cup in S88. A forward and a blueliner aren't very comparable head to head, and splitting the two players didn't make much sense with both of them spending the full half decade with Prague.

John Jameson holding a streak of four straight 40 goal seasons for the Phantoms makes an easy choice for an All-Star, but should be a difficult choice for which season is the best standout. S89 rises above the rest here, as Jameson eclipsed the 50 goal mark for the only time, along with a high in assists, points, and shots. It also included personal hardware, with Jameson winning the Scotty Campbell and Scott Boulet Trophies, a testament to the dominant season that Jameson had.

Velociraptor Greg was a harder pick to narrow down a best season, with double digit goals and 50+ points in each season of the half decade from the blueline. I gave the edge to S88, one that held a high in goals, assists, points, and game winning goals for the half decade period. Greg has been a model of consistency on the back end for the Phantoms, both offensively and defensively.

    Riga Reign

Player: G - Henry Tucker Jr.

    S88-92 Totals: 257 GP  155-78-20  .928 SV%  2.50 GAA  10 SO  8164 SV  15222 MIN
    Best Season: S91 - 65 GP  47-12-5  .931 SV%  2.28 GAA  2 SO  1966 SV

Why?: Henry Tucker Jr. spent the first four seasons of the half decade with Riga, posting solid numbers in all four seasons. While all four seasons were solid, S91 ends up being the choice here for the All-Star nod, seeing the best win total, save percentage, and goals against average with the Reign. Tucker Jr. almost topped the 50 win mark, which is an exceptionally difficult threshold to break. Having a four season run where the worst save percentage is .925 is consistent and remarkable.

    Seattle Bears

Player: D - Rex Wolffe Gregor

    S88-92 Totals: 216 GP  50 G  141 A  191 PTS  633 SHT  387 PIM  413 HIT  411 SB  7 GWG  33 PPG
    Best Season: S91 - 72 GP  27 G  52 A  79 PTS  288 SHT  120 PIM  165 HIT  137 SB  6 GWG  19 PPG

Why?: Rex Wolffe Gregor is the only player on the list to make it while playing fewer than four seasons with their team. There is plenty of good reason for Gregor to be the nominee for the Bears, as the S91 numbers are eye-popping. Gregor neared the 30 goal mark from the blueline, which is remarkable, and almost hit 20 goals on the powerplay, which is equally remarkable. Gregor also topped the 50 assist mark, and was very close to hitting the 80 points and 300 shots totals.

    Toronto Legion

Player: Tie between C - Mac Atlas and G - Joel Castle

    S88-92 Totals (Atlas): 336 GP  164 G  150 A  314 PTS  1917 SHT  319 PIM  705 HIT  157 SB  31 GWG  31 PPG
    Best Season (Atlas): S91 - 72 GP  46 G  42 A  88 PTS  539 SHT  77 PIM  186 HIT  26 SB  10 GWG  10 PPG

    S88-92 Totals (Castle): 303 GP  141-126-34  .927 SV%  2.47 GAA  16 SO  9523 SV  18123 MIN
    Best Season (Castle): S91 - 65 GP  42-21-1  .938 SV%  2.06 GAA  3 SO  1997 SV

Why?: Yet another team who gets a split between a forward and a goaltender, this duo won the Continental Cup together last season. Both players have spent the entire half decade with Toronto, and put up their best seasons last year on the way to the Championship.

Mac Atlas has been the Captain of the Legion for the last four seasons, and had his best offensive season in S91. Setting career highs almost across the board was impressive for Atlas, hitting that mark in goals, assists, points, shots, penalty minutes, hits, game winning goals, and powerplay goals. Atlas finished among the league leaders in multiple categories, and was an easy choice to go with for the Legion skaters.

Joel Castle has had multiple strong seasons in net, but S91 is the clear runaway for the best. A league best save percentage and the second best goals against average made this an easy choice, and Castle ended up being runner up in the top goaltender category. The .938 save percentage was tied for the best single season mark for the goalies on this list, earning Castle his reputation as a brick wall.

    Vancouver Wolves

    Player: G - Brandt Fuhr

    S88-92 Totals: 64 GP  49-12-3  .938 SV%  2.06 GAA  7 SO  2015 SV  12743 MIN
    Best Season: S89 - 65 GP  40-22-2  .922 SV%  2.63 GAA  4 SO  1969 SV

Why?: Fuhr spent the first four seasons of the half decade with the Wolves, and was a consistent backstop throughout that run. S89 was the choice for the All-Star season, setting a high in wins for that period with 40, and a best goals against average with 2.63. Fuhr finished that run with a .921 save percentage total for that time with the Wolves, and was a solid presence in net throughout.

    Warsaw Predators

    Player: D - Doug Britton

    S88-92 Totals: 336 GP  38 G  158 A  196 PTS  581 SHT  574 PIM  819 HIT  691 SB  5 GWG  18 PPG
    Best Season: S90 - 72 GP  12 G  35 A  47 PTS  152 SHT  134 PIM  226 HIT  181 SB  2 GWG  5 PPG

Why?: Britton had multiple solid seasons for the Preds throughout the entire half decade, but there was one season where it all came together offensively and defensively. S90 saw a high in goals, penalty minutes, hits, shot blocks, and game winning goals for Britton. The middle of the run saw three straight seasons over 30 assists and 40 points, leaving Britton as the model of consistency for Warsaw on the blueline.

oilmandan reacted to rory in DO CANUCKS FANS KNOW BALL? A Statistical Study
Dearest VHL nation, if you are like me, an average purveyor of the internet, you may have come across creatures known as "Vancouver Canucks fans". These absolute cretins come out of every orifice from the depths of hell every 15 years or so. From the online discourse, me, and and many others, have come to the conclusion that Vancouver Canucks fans do NOT know ball. Especially following the discussion after Vancouver Canucks defender Tyler Myers threw a wild elbow to injure an opponent last night, their baffling lack of hockey knowledge has always been a major sticking point in my head. With their very foolish hockey opinions backed up by cherry picked Jfresh and Dom lzuxckeusdms "player cards" that focus on irrelavant advanced stats like rWAR% (seriously what the fuck. this is a baseball stat. if you think WAR is relevant in anything other then baseball you are criminally insane), Canucks fans have created an echo chamber where bad opinions beget bad opinions, tricking their entire fanbase into the delusion.

My hypothesis is that Canucks fans lack of hockey knowledge emanates from their lack of hockey skills. Everybody knows that hockey is a very intricate sport with a wide array of abilities used to succeed. In my opinion, the very base level skill in hockey is SKATING. So I posed the Canucks fans of the VHL a simple question: "do u know how to skate". The answers will SHOCK you!

Based on these findings, the average Canuck fan does NOT know how to skate. If we dive deeper into the numbers, however, a trend starts to emerge. Of the Canucks fans that self report their ability to skate, ZERO of them are natives to Vancouver's natural fan area. Beaver is famously a product of Sherwood Park, Alberta. Perhaps this is where he learned how to skate, during his time in OIL COUNTRY. Ricer, I believe, also has roots in Alberta. version 2 is from Newfoundland and/or Labrador. In fact, the Canucks were so afraid of having a bad performance in front of him they cancelled their game when he was in town! Lol!

In the sake of fairness, I also contacted some fans of the Edmonton Oilers, a good sporting fan base with no flaws whatsoever. This is my control group, so we can compare people of the same general demographic (i.e. nerds that are on VHLforum.com):

If we consider this unbiased, scientific information, we can come to the conclusion that Canucks fans DO NOT know how to skate, and DO NOT know ball. Please ignore any opinion that you may hear from a B.C. based Canucks fan, and allow them to continue living in their delusion. Thank you for reading.

I guess I can expand on my choice for charity. Every parent’s worst nightmare is their kid getting sick in any way. The 2 children’s hospitals in Edmonton and Calgary are world class, wife and I even chose the hospital to have our kid at to be right next to the children’s hospital in Calgary. Hope to never need to go in there, but am very glad to donate to them every year just in case.

    Spirit Bear Award  - @oilmandan

The Spirit Bear award is chosen each off-season by the GM of the Bears. There could be a lot of reasons why a member might be chosen and each season an explanation will/might be given. It's a thank you. It's an appreciation of what you've done for Seattle or maybe through that the VHL. You're deserving! Maybe you've overcome something crazy in life or have kicked it up an extra notch in the VHL TPE earning department. It's a good award for good things that are good. So, what's the catch?

The winner picks a charity of their choosing (I'd like to know why IF you're comfortable with sharing) and I will donate $10! I know it isn't much, but it's something.. and I mean, think of if I would have started this in Season 49.

Rex Wolffe Gregor, who goes under the username @oilmandan, has been a Bear more times that I can remember. It all started back with Dan Willinsky and seems to be back with every single player. Before we dive any deeper, sorry about that, Dan, lol. When we traded for him all those seasons ago, he immediately made a huge impact on the team, locker room and behind the scenes. He was a tad more involved when it came to the daily locker room and helping out with the council, but from S69 and onward, his role with the team has never changed. He's collected cups with the team, tons of amazing seasons and has helped me out so much. I have a group of people on here who are the most important. I'm not saying others aren't important but there's just a group I hold dear. They're loyal. They're honest. They're amazing people who don't judge, are kind and just accept everyone for who they are. We've enjoyed hours and hours of talks and keep in touch on what's going on in life - even if we haven't been connected to teams in seasons or even sometimes - YEARS! Dan fits into this group. One of my favourite people on this league and one of the members I trust the most with all of my and Seattle's secrets. Amazing member and an even better person who I'm fortunate enough to have met and continue a VHL relationship with to this day!

OMD, OMD, OMD! Thank you for all you've done for Seattle. I know you always chat and mention "this could be the last player" and all that shit, but I truly hope you keep coming back dude to whatever extent is comfortable for you. Age has no limits on these leagues no more. We've all grown with them. It's fantasy hockey and the league and my experience are certainly better with you part of it. CHEERS DUDE! With that being said, I asked,  "What's a charity fund/organization that you would donate to if you could right now? and why?" and Danny boy said "I'm always a fan of the stollery or the Alberta cancer foundation. I give to both every year. If I had to pick one right now I'd go stollery.

    @v.2

It’s season 60, the New York Americans are in the Continental Cup finals for the first time since their back-to-back cups in seasons 52 and 53, game 7, and the American’s come out firing on all cylinders and outshot Helsinki 34-19. However, that wasn’t enough as Helsinki would hang on for a 3-1 win with Franchise Cornerstone scoring the Cup clinching goal. Little did New York know at the time that would be their last taste of success for some time. Today we’ll be taking a look back at the 30 seasons it has been since that fateful day where the New York Americans were so close to their 8th Continental Cup. With that being said New York has had their bright spots in that stretch, but at the end of the day a combination of inconsistency and good old Simon have led to the New York Americans holding multiple records nobody wants.

    The Early Years
Following their near victory in S60 the New York Americans were solid in S61, finishing with a 50-19-3 record, and sweeping the Quebec City Meute in the wildcard before falling short in the semi-finals in 7 games to Calgary. Following this defeat the Americans would completely rebuild, finishing 2nd last in each of the next 3 seasons, the benefit of that is that they were able to draft a very promising future core consisting of; Joseph McWolf @McWolf, Dan Wilinsky @oilmandan, Ryan Sullivan Jr @Advantage, Joel Ylonen @Esso2264, and Charles Puigdemont. Because of their very good drafting, the Nww York Americans were back in the playoffs in S65 where they were swept in the wildcard round by the Helsinki Titans. The following season the Americans were back in the playoff picture, and would again lose in the wildcard round in 6, this time to the Vancouver Wolves. But, this New York Americans’ team is young, strong and surely only getting better, right?

    The First Collapse
For one reason or another, the Americans decided that enough was enough and decided to sell everyone and everything they could, starting by selling McWolf to Riga, Twinger to Calgary, Ylonen to Seattle, and so on. While they did get a lot of picks and players back, with their recent momentum this seems to be a surprising move. With that being said, they did bring in Guy LeGrande @Steve to try and have a new top prospect! This didn’t save them though as they would go 20-45-7 in season 67, finishing last in the league. With this they would draft 2nd overall and took Lance Flowers @CowboyinAmerica. They would also select A Red Guy @.sniffuM, and Frederick Elmebeck @Elmebeck, in the first round among another player who we won’t talk about. Of those Flowers would make an immediate impact as they would win both top rookie and top defensive defenseman honours. In season 68 New York would miss the playoff by only 5 points while still trading away players for futures.

    Playoffs and Disappointment
In the season 69 draft the Americans would take Soren Jensen @Velevra, and David O Quinn @David O'Quinn, the former of which would make the season 69 roster. Propelled by Boris the Forest @chillzone, they would make the playoffs as the 3rd seed in their conference, but would again be dispatched in the 1st round in 7 by Seattle. With this recent success in mind, New York would buy aggressively in the offseason, bringing back Joseph McWolf, and Joel Ylonen. However, New York would miss the playoffs by only 1 point, despite a solid 36-28-8 record. Following this disappointment, New York would retool, shipping out veterans and bringing in younger talent like Micheal Gary Scott @Motzaburger, and draft picks. They would also acquire John Frostbeard @FrostBeard in a trade at the midpoint of the season as the Americans made a playoff push. Ultimately, they would fall just short yet again with 80 points and a 39-31-2 record. In season 72 the New York Americans veterans in Acyd Burn @Acydburn, and Julius Freeman @rjfryman to build upon their core and with that they would get back into the playoffs as the 3rd seed, and not only that , they would manage to win a series, besting the Seattle Bears in 5, prior to another game 7 defeat at the hands of the Calgary Wranglers. In Season 73, New York would essentially run it back with the same group, and they would make the playoffs again! This time with a 43-23-6 record. Once in the playoffs, they would have a rematch against Calgary, who would again get by the American’s in game #7. Even with this success, it couldn’t continue forever, with their big names in Burn and Freeman retiring, New York would have an uphill battle to make the playoffs, and with that in mind, had a very quiet offseason. With retirements impacting their success, New York would fall well short, finishing with their first losing record in some time with a 28-37-7.

    The Meh Seventies
Throughout the mid 70’s not a whole lot happened in New York, trades when needed, and the team’s focus shifted towards drafting and developing young players. However, their first draft pick of this new mentality would not really pan out early, despite a now infamous season 75 draft. With that being said New York hit on 3 of their 4 next draft picks with Chicken Wing @chikn, Cowboy Prout @Prout, and franchise goaltender Thadius Sales @thadthrasher! Despite a good draft, New York would be in for a long season as they finished last with a 21-42-9 record. The positive of finishing last, is you get the best odds at 1st overall, and New York would win the lottery! With the 1st overall pick in season 76, the New York American’s selected Red Lite @Tate, a franchise altering forward that would do just that as they would finish their first season with 39 goals and 80 points! Despite this infusion of offence, New York fell short with a 27-36-9 season. New York would keep the great drafting going with Zeedayno Chara @Jubis at 4th overall. In season 77, the still developing New York Americans would show signs of growth with a 28-35-9 season, but a good 241 goals for. New York did break their recent pattern of drafting and developing in season 77 though, as they traded their season 78 1st (would be 1st overall), for Kosmo Kramerev @Mongoose87. New York’s hardship would pay off in season 78 though as they would go 36-31-5 and would make the playoffs! As their drafted players began to hit their prime, and acquired a veteran presence in Latrell Mitchell @dasboot to get them over the edge. In the playoffs, New York would struggle and would not make it out of the wildcard round as the D.C. Dragons made it past them in 4.

    The Drought
Following their success in season 78, New York would buy again, bringing in Phoenix Dawson @Toast. Even with their core now in their prime, New York would struggle to keep things consistent and would miss the playoffs with a record that was 1 game below .500. While season 79 was disappointing, New York still had the makings of a great team and with this in mind, they bought aggressively in the season 80 offseason, bringing in all of, Luke Thornton @ThePerfectNut, Yuuto Kira Cloudera @kentakira and brought back Cowboy Prout, and at the cost of many of their future early picks. Even with all these additions to their core, the Americans would somehow miss the playoffs and only finish with a record of 32-34-6. Following this, the Americans would hit the reset button again, in large part due to many of their top players retiring, including a surprise retirement from Red Lite. Without many of their own picks, this proved difficult though as they would struggle for some time. In the season 81 offseason, New York would trade everyone, entirely for draft picks. The season 81 draft, now with a lot of picks, would go horribly wrong, as none of the players selected would play a game for the Americans, and only one would make the VHL. Their record would reflect this as they finished with a 26-40-6 record and would miss the playoffs by a wide margin. Season 82 would start off with a bit of luck for New York as they would win the draft lottery and select Vasile Lamb @dlamb 1st overall. They would also add Doug Matchett @jacobaa19 with their 3rd round pick. New York would still be in full rebuild mode in season 82, finishing with a 30-39-3 record, and 6th in their division. Following this, New York once again felt as though they were in a good position to buy and did just that, bringing in Jerome @MexicanCow123 and Tyler @Zetterberg Reinhart in a blockbuster trade! This elite talent would make an impact right away and Jerome would put up over 100 points in season 83, although in part due to being unable to keep the puck out of their own net, the Americans would finish 6th in their conference again and miss out on the playoffs. At this point New York certainly had some good pieces in place and a very solid young core even with trading Lamb away. However, New York went further towards a retool of their rebuild, bringing in Sven Eightnine @BarzalGoat, and shipping out veterans for prospects and picks at the same time. With this New York would finish 6th in their conference yet again with a 28 win season.

    A New Direction
In Season 85, New York would fully commit to a rebuild, and they would start that off by trading up in the draft for Daniel Weaver @ThePerfectNut, and they would hit on their 2nd first as well with Babay Shrimp @Blazzer. They would go onto finish 7th in their conference that season, and with that would get a higher draft pick. Prior to the draft, New York would acquire Napoleon Dynamite @thadthrasher in a massive trade which would see the departure of Daniel Weaver and other assets. Moving into season 86, the New York Americans would almost pull it off and make the playoffs as they would finish the season tied with Seattle for the final playoff spot in their conference, although they would lose out on ROW this did show a massive step forward. Season 87 was an interesting one for New York as they would acquire Alexandre Leduc @Lemorse7, while gathering draft stock for the future. The New York Americans would again finish in 6th, missing the playoffs by 7 points. The season 88 draft would be a big one for New York, adding Jesper Davis @Josh with their 4th overall pick, and Francesco Mancini @GioSivo, both of who would make their debut in season 89, with Davis winning the award for being the best rookie. Neither of them would miss much in season 88 as New York would finish 6th again, this time by a wider margin of 10 points. With their season 89 1st, New York would add Zyn Westwood @Sullvino 5th overall, they would then go onto add both Nezuko @Baozi, and Max Torq @Steve at the season 89 trade deadline as they would go onto MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! This would end the longest playoff drought in league history at 10 seasons. Not only would New York make the playoffs, but they would best the Los Angeles Stars in the wildcard round, and then do the unthinkable and defeat the 1st seed Seattle Bears in 6 games before being swept in the conference finals by the Vancouver Wolves. Despite this success, the Americans would stick to their plan of drafting and developing and add Xiver Zilla @jhatty8 in the season 90 draft, before missing the playoffs again in season 90 as retirements would once again derail things slightly. But, with that they won the draft lottery and selected Callum Gary Yannick Janser @Daniel Janser with the 1st overall pick, and added Rin Kagamine @Rin later in the 1st round. Currently the Americans are only 1 point out of the playoffs and have added Brandt Fuhr to hopefully get them back into the dance.

The New York Americans are well on the track to success with franchise pieces in place, but with some gaps left to fill, only time will tell when the 37 season long cup drought and 30 season long finals drought will come to an end. The real question here is what derailed New York all those times, one can simply chalk it up to high value draft picks not quite turning out as desired (I did not mention many of the busts), and just terrible luck with game sevens despite being the better team, Simon has definitely made things difficult for one of the VHL’s oldest franchises. It should be noted that GMs of New York have done a very good job, for the most part they made good decisions and just got dealt a very bad hand full of early retirements, what appeared to be great draft picks not panning out, and terrible sim luck.

For this weeks around the league I am extremely hungover and just returned home from a trip to Dallas Texas to visit a buddy who hosted a bourbon tasting event at his amazing home.  And I am paying for it today so apologies if none of this makes sense.

A lot has gone on this week I see as I bounce through the forum.  Someone was banned for plagiarism, Chicago keeps winning, Riga and London are tough, and there are some pretty amazing stats for only being a quarter way through the season.

    POWER PLAY SNIPER
I was surfing the stats in the VHL today and saw that Seattle dman, Rex Wolffe Gregor @oilmandan already has 10 power play goals in 24 games and 4 game winners already.  He’s already beat last year’s totals for PPG and is on a ridiculous pace to put some impressive point numbers up.  Rex’s career high is an impressive 20 goals and 67 points in S88 and I can see him easily blowing by that this season.

    TOUGH GUYS GETTING AFTER IT
Checking out the PIMS and fight number thus far is always a joy.  Leading in the PIM category is Womp Womp Womp Womp etc @AdamEsswith 86 PIMS for a struggling NY club.  I did not see him listed in the fights, so he has 2 or less to this point but playing a nasty game at 605 250lbs.

Familiar names like Phil Strasmore @PhilPhil with 77PIMs and Alfred Champagne @Anthique with 75PIM.  Daryl Dixon 75 and John Jameson @Frank 75 pim round out the top 5.
For fights here is the numbers:
Alfred Champagne  3 fights 1 win
John Jameson.          3 fights 1 win
    Scotty Sundin.          3 fights
    Daryl Dixon.              3 fights
Jake Thunder.           2 fights 1 win
    Jarmo Ruutu             2 fights
    Phil Strasmore         2 fights
AK92 wit da hoodie 2 fights
    Doug Britton             2 fights
    Ivan Restoslav          2 fights

    RIP WHEELER UPDATE
Checking in on my buddy and world class sissy, Rip Wheeler. Smartly, the team had ole @ScottyPScott re-tool his TPE to better suit the team this year so I checked in on to see how it worked out.  Right now, at 23 games in the season he has matched his totals of last year with 12g 12a 24 points, ONLY 6 PIM, and 32 hits.  Whatever they did it seems to have paid off and Rip “the puck bag” Wheeler might actually live up to the “most improved player” prediction I voted for him on this season.  BUT…just when I think I can root for him I look at his TPE updates for the week and he was only done practice facility.  UGH Rip.  I will see you tomorrow at work and we can chat.

    RECRUITING HOPEFULS!
So far, I have been pretty lucky recruiting a few players into the VHL ranks.  Most notably Jake Thunder and the above-mentioned Rip Wheeler. Now Rip Wheeler is no Jake Thunder but I also recruited a turd who stayed in M for three season and quit.  Can’t win them all.

I am trying very hard to bring a couple new bodies in.  There excited and reluctant so wish me luck.

Randy Bobandy, also known by their member name as @AJW, is an absolute gem to me. He was never really part of the S67 dynasty Bears which drew a good group of us lads like Berocka, Dok, IR, Rayz, Frosty, oilmandan, etc together - but over time, with his last player and this player, he's become a VHL brother to me. He's helped huge with the team, is incredibly loyal and is always promoting activity and positive vibes in the locker room. All while tackling school and going crazy with football! The guy is awesome and is a perfect example of a Seattle Bear! Unfortunately their time with the Bears was cut short this season, but their accomplishments and efforts will never be forgotten by myself and despite them being gone, they will always be a Bear and more importantly, a VHL brother! I asked AJ, "What's a charity fund/organization that you would donate to if you could right now? and why?" over snapchat and they mentioned that they don't have any specifics and would like to help out some homeless foundation/community. Last season we went with Boyle Street in Edmonton after Tavish DeGroot (Rory)  took home the first ever Spirit Bear Award! With a quick Google search, I find that Los Angeles has the highest homeless population, along with California leading the way. With that being said, I went ahead and made a $10.40 (to help cover fees) towards the Los Angeles Mission Homeless Shelter. Thank you @AJW for everything you've done for Seattle, myself and the VHL. Though... you did leave me on read

41 seasons behind me and I have never once done a "seasons award" during the off-season. We're putting in a lot of work to do whatever we can to make any and every experience possible improved. S89 was a very strong season in the regular season that seen us end the regular 72 with an 11 game winning streak and coming with in immediate striking distance for the Victory Cup when it looked far out of reach before the run. We ended up losing a very tough series to New York. Shouldn't have lost but we did. It happens. At the end of the day, reflecting, we had a very great team. I knew it then and I still think it now. We had a good group and it just couldn't click when it counted. Despite this, lots of success and I'm grateful and appreciative to have shared the journey of S89 with the group we had. Thank you to all of you!

So, why @rory? Well, they were right when they said they were FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY during our exit press conference. Often, we do say our goodbyes to retiring or leaving players. Words were said, messages exchanged and all of that jazz, but no press conference question... Bana dropped the ball but here is the important message of the day... The ball can be picked back up. That's what we're doing here. Rory was a massive member to the Seattle locker room and displayed huge loyalty. Whether it was being shouted from the rooftops or in their own way, it worked and rubbed off on the team. Good energy, good times. They're a huge help to me in Seattle and I'm appreciative that we were able to look beyond our murky history/past, give each other a shot and it worked out. With that being said.. I asked Rory "What's a charity fund/organization that you would donate to if you could right now? and why?"

Rory, thank you for your efforts and the times during Season 89. I'm sorry you weren't sent off properly like I often do in the press conference! #PressConfGate I hope this makes up for it and congratulations on being the first ever member of the Seattle Bears family to put their paw print on the Spirit Bear Award. You are very deserving. Thank you!!

Well the time has come and the S88 World Cup is getting underway with teams being named I’ve the next few days . Let’s take a look at Team Canada.

we’ll start off with the Forward group they will be running with .

    Molly The Cat
Coming off a solid season in London where the United win the Continental Cup , Molly will look to build off that and help Canada in their quest to win a Gold medal . Molly is a top player in the VHL and a very respected member of the community look out for him to have a big Tournament in what is his first kick at the cat on the World Cup stage.

    Brendan Marner
The long time Veteran finished his final VHL season 2nd in goals and points overall . This will be Marners 3rd time wearing the maple leaf . Marner will be looked at to lead the forward core this year and relied upon as a leader in the locker room . Marner is a big time power forward and a big time player hungry to go out on top with a gold medal !

    Hulk Hogan 2
Hogan is another Veteran returning for his 3rd World Cup , the Big forward will be counted on to set the tone physically along with setting the offensive tone , Like Marner Hogan is looking to finish his third tournament on top with a Gold medal.

    Alexandre Leduc
The ever elusive Leduc is looking to provide speed and spark , Leduc is part of the group returning for their 3rd World Cup . The speedy winger will be a valuable asset up front for the Canadian team .

    Mason Jones
Jones is making his World Cup debut after years of just missing the cut . You can bet he’s looking to prove that the management made the right choice in giving him a chance to wear the maple leaf before he retires.

    Todd Cooke
The young Forward is looking to continue his climb and ascent to establish himself as an elite forward . Cooke has worked towards playing in this tournament since his rookie season . Cooke joins a VERY talented Forward group and is coming off a career best season with the LA Stars .

This forward group is among the best in the Tournament and is sure to be high powered. Any line combinations they choose to run will be offensively gifted and physical .

let’s look at the Defence now !

    Pierre Emile Bouchard
Bouchard is one of the Best defenders of not the best defender in the VHL and will be a huge contributor and leader on the back end for team Canada. This will be his second time representing team Canada in this tournament.

    AirRig GoodBrandSon
The Veteran defenceman will join Bouchard on Canadas top pair and provide a two way presence much like Bouchard. GoodBrandSon is a very good Puck Mover like Bouchard these 2 well be relied upon as the only returning defenders on the team .

    Doug Matchett
Matchett gets the call on the backend as well. Matchett is a long time Veteran in the VHL and is playing in his 1st World Cup . The smaller speedy defender will bring a good 2 way defensive game to the table and look to make a positive impact to help the team on their journey to try to win a gold medal.

    Rex Wolfe Gregor
Rex is the youngest member of team Canada and will look to bring that youthful enthusiasm to the team. After setting career highs in his Sophmore season with Malmo he will take this tournament as an opportunity to build on that as well as establish himself as a real up and comer in years to come .

The D core is very veteran heavy with a sprinkle of youth , I believe that youth and enthusiasm will separate Canadas defence from other teams !

Last but not least the Goalies

    Brandt Fuhr
Fuhr is first on our returning goalie tandem this year . He will carry the bulk of the load as the 1A option . Fuhr has big game experience and will have to bring that into the tournament for team Canada . He’s been successful in the VHL can that transfer to the World stage ?

    Augustus Kennedy
The second Goalie in this Tandem and returning duo. Kennedy is just looking for the chance to breakthrough and really establish himself and take that next step as a goalie. He’s always been steady in the crease but this tournament is where we could see him take the next step and start to separate himself from all the other tendies in the league.

Overall Both of these Goalies give Canada a chance to win every game and the team can be comfortable going into any game .

Team Canada overall is built to win this tournament they are strong at every position . And have no real weaknesses all around , this team is exciting they can skate they can hit they can score . This team will be exciting and a team to watch in the World Cup this season .

  25. Woah
oilmandan got a reaction from Frank in Rex Wolffe Gregor could be on the move
At the conclusion of this VHL season, Rex Wolffe Gregor will be hitting free agency. This will be his first shot at free agency as well as the first time in the OilMan Sports Agency’s history that a player goes fully to picking their own destiny.

This isn’t a slight on the Malmo franchise, they helped him have a very solid offensive season and there is a possibility Rex does go back there, but with this likely being the final player coming out of the agency, we are being a tad more selective on our final career.

For the GMs in the VHL, I don’t have many wants for this player, other than a chance to win a few championships going out. Not really interested in rebuilding as it can be easy to lose half your career attempting to make the playoffs. No need for any high salary either, the VHL has done a good job at making money so useless in some aspects that it’s an afterthought. Let us buy tpe like everywhere else!

Any interest in my player can be directed to my DMs here or on discord oilmandan#5140. Or Rex can go quietly into the night and retire if there is no appetite for his services
